Re: [sslee80] GREAT DANE FANS [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,Smile

Remember I mentioned quite a while ago abt working Great Dane crosses?

The bulldogs(the old type..not the modern flat faced ones)mix some sort of pointer, fow houds, terriers.grey hound, mastiff(breeds something like those) to create a boar hunting dog?

they're not arab dogsBlush sorry.....found out the name. They're called Bull Arabs. Try looking that breed up. Smile

Another interesting new breed is the Canis Panther. Developed in the 70's as a working/protection dog using breeds like the Great Dane,Labrador,Dobermann and Staffordshire terrier.(not sure if it's American Stafforshire Terrier or Staffordshire Bull Terrier). They look like solid colour dobermanns(heheh..they hv colours like blue and red..like the french mastiff redWink) which hv more muscle mass and are more solid in general. Same height as dobermanns, males weight abt 50-60kgs(Shocked) and females around 40-50 kgs.

I think danes are not use for hunting purpose anymore. They are bred for companion today.

Re: [sslee80] GREAT DANE FANS [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,Smile

"I think danes are not use for hunting purpose anymore. They are bred for companion today"

Wouldn't that disappoint the founder of the breed? He worked so hard to get the ideal hunting dog only now to be used as a companion dog?

But honestly, alot ppl think so too. That's why it's very hard to get a pure working GD...and hv to cross breed.

Guess this is where our opinions differ. My idea of a great dog is a dog which can do what it was originally bred for,or can do a small degree of work by using his instinct and drives. As for looks...I would say as long as it looks like the original.

No worries..Just gv me a callSmile

they all look pretty different. Some look more like fox hounds, some like deerhouds, some like bull terrier, some like great danes...some look like real mongrels, some look like game pits...etc

it varies. Different crosses hv different looks.

Re: [RealityDreamer] GREAT DANE FANS [In reply to] Can't Post

hiSmile

u have the point there that it would disappoint the founder of the breed. But many ppl today keep this breed not for hunting purpose (although some hunters do) anymore, and they prefer to have a good temperament danes instead of the "agressive" type with hunting prey instinct. It would be dangerous/ risky to bring one out for a walk then...Smile

now I know that u prefer the working type of danes. Have u seen one in Malaysia b4??? Can train my dane to be a working dane ar?? say, I bring them to jungle and let them spot some animals and see whether they would hunt or not???Blush

Have a Great Day.

Re: [sslee80] GREAT DANE FANS [In reply to] Can't Post

What you say is true..But the dogs which are bred do not hv to work, just prove themselves as real danes. Protectors as well as hunters. That's all.Or perhaps for sport(which is pretty gross)

The working danes/dogs to be bred in the first place hv to hv first and foremost, good and stable temprements.

As with all dogs, socialization is key. If you socialize the dog with humans, children and other dogs. He definitely will know the difference. The hunting dogs are proven pets as well. Smile Go through the sites and you'll know.

These dogs are also trained to hunt/scent for specific prey, hogs in this case. They don't simply hunt everything that moves.Tongue

Unfortunately,no.Unsure

As for training...I'm not too sure. They hv to hv the right drives, esp prey drive. Then later on,they hv to be taught how to hold the hog etc. From what I read, to teach this, you'll need an older and experienced dog to hunt with the young one so that he'll learn frm the older one.

Re: [RealityDreamer] GREAT DANE FANS [In reply to] Can't Post

hiSmile

ok...I understand your point and do agree with uSmile

do u think those working danes (protectors or hunters) can get along well with other dog breeds?

ha...just curious abt Raven. Last nite, I brought him out for walk. we passed by a tree. He started to bark. There was a cat on the tree trunk which I didnt notice at the begining. He kept on barking and seemed like he wanted to hunt/attack the cat.

later, when I brought crystal out to the same spot. She was whacking her tail and seemed like she wanted to play with the cat. She didnt bark at all. So, I can see the difference between Raven and Crystal. Raven has some kind of hunting instinct and he always like to bark at other dogs, cats, and even strangers. I try to control his aggression towards others, like ask him to stop when he is barking. Im not sure if Im doing the right thing. Crazy

he has been growing up very rapidly...Smile I'm afraid I cant control him once he is fully grown up. Should I let him continue to behave like this or should I tame him down b4 it is too late??

Have a Great Day.

Re: [sslee80] GREAT DANE FANS [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,Smile

Yeap...they can. And they hv to because the hunt in packs and most of the times they're all different breeds.

Same with my dogs, but I would suggest not to encourage the behaviour because it's not safe. We're in the city and there are cars everywhere. Unsure Best to curb it. I'm already having trouble holding onto Hazel..can't imagine Raven.

Depeding on his aggresion I guess, does he bark at ppl who just walk by? I think it could be fear aggression. Barely any dogs would bark at just anyone who walks by,unless of course the stranger has been eyeing you..or giving curious looks.

Anyway,here's an interesting article:

HI,

ha...at this stage, Raven is still manageable for me but not sure few months from nowUnimpressed

he barks at strangers who walk pass the house. That excludes the neighbors. So, a bit confuse at this stage... and u know what, my brother prefers Raven to be a guard/protective dogCrazy I told him, then how can I bring him out to KK? Laugh

Hello,Smile

If he has the right genes, nerves etc and gets the right trainers& training method, he'll be as docile as any other pet. Just that he will protect you when there is trouble. They are trained to recognize trouble and react to it,on or off command.

You sure can bring him out still.

P.S. you're welcome.
