Hi Kelsey,

Wow, you have very interesting menu for Roxy! Does this make her less interested in Canidae? Do you have to cook the veggies first, what types of veggies that you normally give? Did you try giving eggs, I heard that dogs like it too...Other diet will affect the stool, right? I wanted to try, but a bit worry....

Yesterday I tried giving a small piece of pear to my Daisy, she took it then threw it out, repeated these actions for many times (like playing), then finally she ate it (i guess, because it disappeared after that), I wonder why?

I also use normal shampoo, but I don't know whether it's good or not...Daisy moves a lot when I comb her, even she understands the 'sit' command, but she just sit for seconds. So I will try to put her on my lap or give her a chew toy, like you said.

Thanks so much...Have a great day!!!

Hi Beyond,

My Daisy also trying to bite when I'm playing with her, this is their way of playing, so each time I will say NO and move my hands away, then she will stop...and then she actually sayang me back by licking my hands, then I will sayang her back lor!!!Sly

I have 2 balls, 1 nylon bone (I think this type is more hygiene because washable, and it won't get eaten) and 1 chewy toy (recycled from my son's baby rubber toy)...Today I bought a leash, for training and when bathing her...the 1st time I bathed her, she walked all over the bathroom, I had to catch her many times and made me all wet, so I'll have to tie her the next time....maybe other ppl here can offer some better ideas...Wink

And thanks for suggesting the 2 books....BTW, do you plan to bring your pup to obedient class later? They can get a chance to meet some doggie friends there.....

Hi Hi..YEah ..I m giving him 'raw' and sometimes 'half cooked' egg mixed with dry food..Man..Ben (HIs name now) will lick his bowl clean.

Hm..He still need time to get use to the command 'NO', sometimes..I terpaksa go 'loudly' and glare at him..THen he wil 'tau tap tap'..Hahah ..So funny..At least he knows that I dun like him to nip at my hand and shredding the cardboard that I gave to him to lie on..

Hehehe..I bought a leash and collar for him today..Hahahah..Boy...He doesnt like it..He will bite at the leash ..And he will try to shake the collar off..SO SO so funny...In the end..He succeeded in getting the collar of..So I didnt put it on back lar..

Ha..I bought a box of treats today..(Expensive..)..Man..A pup does understand better with treats..Kekekek..ANd then..He was really 'active' today for a change..He kept retrieving the rope that I throw for him..HAhaha..Finally..Some good exercise for him..

About the flakes..Still persisting..Today I bath him again..Dried him up and Scraped most of the flakes off..Now squeky clean..

YEah yeah..I wanna enrol him in some sort of class as well...The next class will be in NOvember..But I wonder if Ben is ready for it or not..

Re: [WendyS] SKin problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi wendy,

no, she isn't less interested in Canidae, i just found out, that she used to get constipated, like very hard stool from the first time we got her. we mixed her food with water but to no avail so we increase the fiber in her diet. i don't cook the veggies, i normally will blend carrots, sawi, lettuce, cucumber and any veggies i can think off (excluding spinach & citrus veggies- i read this is not recommended), and i keep it in the fridge. the chicken stock, i also do in advance, this is very convenient as when u buy whole chicken, you will have the bones, just boil it. i put 1 piece of garlic, chopped finely and boil the chicken in it. DO NOT PUT ANY KINDS OF SEASONINGS.

i gave her egg, 1/2 boiled but i don't want her to be too biasa, plus egg have so much protein and the yolk got so much cholestrol mah. if u want to give, maybe 2 weeks once lah. other diet don't affect the stool except human milk and wheat bread, pls don't give her this 2 things. however plain, yoghurt with lacto (that good bacteria) is good if ur doggie has bad stomach problems.

haha, she is just curious, try this, sit down and eat the pear (once slice), she will sure be curious and also want to eat. when my Roxy was younger, she will play with the pear, i think she thinks the pear is alive, and start pouncing it like a cat, now she don't mind. or maybe daisy don't like pear, Roxy don't like apples, so we opt for the chinese pear, not the round one but the pear shape one:) cucumber is also something i give Roxy. banana, watermelon, starfruit (the two last ones, we give if we eat, we will not buy it just for her).

any veggies u want to give to her, give it raw, wash properly, no need to peel the skin, just make it in small chunks so she can eat it. i don't use commercial treat for her to do tricks but i used sliced cucumber or carrots and she loves them. you can also cut half a carrot and give it to her, this is a good chew "toy" and also nutritious, just supervise her so she don't choke herself.

at 8 weeks, yes she will move a lot when u comb her, Roxy still does that sometimes especially when i come her tail, she hates that but has to be done mahSmile if she attacks the comb, move the comb and say no. continue again, dont' put her on ur lap. ur doggie is not going to be that small for the rest of her life. when she is all big and heavy, you can't put her on the lap, if you do sure ur thigh become numb already. make her sit or lie down with a chew toy and u praise her as u comb her.

hmmm.. a vet in UPM told me, you should not bath ur dog at all until she one week after her 2nd shot, she is very prone to disease, my advice, don't bath her. Roxy didn't get her first bath till she 11 weeks. that is also because i was cleaning my balcony, she so water freak and went under the water pipe, wanting to catch the water. in the end, she became all wet.Smile

good luck..anything that u do now, do remember that she is not going to be small forever, if u don;'t want her to some things now, don't start the habit. you don't want a 50lbs dog jumping on and knocking ur kids down. the dog has to know she is the last on the hierarchy and her master(your family) are all above her.

Hi Beyond,

Your doggie's name is Man Ben or just Ben?...hee..hee...just want to get it right...

Actually I bought a leash & collar few days ago, the same thing happened to me, ie. the collar was a bit too big, so it came out when I used it. Then yesterday I bought another leash which looks like a string, I could adjust it nicely to fit her neck, finally I managed to 'walk' her....It was fun, but more like she was walking me...Blush So need more practice lor....Crazy I must say that it's not easy to control her, she got great strength, I can't imagine if she is not trained when she is big....

Yes, the next OB class from puppy.com is on 21 Nov, I think you can go as long as he is 3 months old & has done the 3 jabs....I may want to bring Daisy too if I can't train her well, but has to take the next class because she will get her full jabs only after 7 Dec. If you can wait, then maybe we can enroll together....

I think it's natural for GR to retrieve objects, Daisy also catches the toy that I throw for her, but she won't return it to me all the time...sometimes she will lie down to chew on the toy or she will just hold on to it. I don't know how to train her to return an object, have to learn more to find out!

I hope your pup's skin will be okay soon !!! Have a nice day....

Hi Kelsey,

Thanks for all the suggestions.....I really appreciate that!!!

Actually I also read that no need to bathe puppies when they are young...but because the breeder already bathed her before and the vet said it's ok, so I bathed her last saturday. But I don't intend to bathe her every week, maybe just before her next jab if she smells, else I'll just wipe her with warm cloth.

Seems that you're doing well with your training, do you have plan to bring Roxy to Obedient class too?

Best regards.

Hi ...

Missed your question earlier ... sorry ... We have a number of dogs ... pure breds & mixed breeds (rescue dogs) ... the number of dogs we have at any one time, kinda fluctuates, depending on the rate of rescue & rehoming ... We will by Sunday have 4 lovely rescue puppies to rehome - so if you know any one who would like to save a life ... post me ... Thanks.

(Little tip - to make sure I don't miss your posting - just insert my nick into the SUBJECT box - at the top when you are typing your post) ...

By the way ... you last post is good ... well said.

Cheers

Re: [surchinmy] [WendyS] SKin problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

surchin,

you mean 4 puppies to be re-home? i have a friend who may be interested but she is more into pugs..what breed are the puppies? thanks for the comp. also still learning from feisty RoxySmile

Wendy, if ur vet says ok, then ok lor:) my Roxy has never been to Obedience training. we may enrol her for basic training later then again we maybe not. she is doing fine with the training just she still haven't quite pass leash training, so we are still polishing that when we take her for walks.

i guess my key was to use the command often, give a command for everything and also treat can't come easy, she has to work for it. either ask her to sit, give paw, stay or whatever, then treat her.

also a very good command i use is "watch me" or "look", try doing this by holding a treat close to ur eye and say "watch me" this is good to gain concentration. Roxy and i like to "terrorize" cats when we go for walks. so when i see a cat and she doesn't, i would say, Roxy, "look" (she will then look at me) and point at the cat. then it begins lah.. we don't go near the cat just enough to startle it..so cruel!!SmileTongue

good treats does wonders to ur dog and u will be amazed what they will do for the treat!:) when she is more reliable, then no need treat. right now we only sometimes use treat when we want her to fetch. other commands, she can be no-treat base.

i am not sure if other dog owners does this, but i also teach my dog sign language, meaning for any commands, there is a hand sign for it. sometimes i don't have to speak to my dog, just show a sign and she will do the command according to the hand sign. this may not be important now but i do know she could be useful to a deaf person.

right now, training progress fr Roxy, at 13 weeks, she is doing more tricks, in the midst of teaching her to roll over, play dead and the name game. she is still perfecting catching treats that she flick from her nose. also we are making a tape of a baby crying and all kinds of noise so she is familiar with it. if ur dog is scared of something, never say ohh it's ok. just distract her. if not then she will be scared forever, plus ur puppy is still very young. you don't want to her jump on u whenever there is thunder & lighting.

go slowly, vary ur training, of course u need to spend more time with the dog, but she will appreciate it.

I find any book by Liz Palika very useful. I have referred to her materials and books and still do as i am training my puppy. My hubby has a dream of making her a service dog (dogs for blind & disabled people), I don't want to give her away Sly, my dream - hoping she will live till she is 17 and die as a very happy canine.

Re: [beyond] [WendyS] SKin problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

get him used to the collar, never let him chew on the leash, no matter what. you are the boss and you will hold the leash. when he chew, just take it out and say no. when u play retrieving game, and he won't give it to u, perhaps he thinks u are going to take the toy for urself. gain trust in him, he will sure give back the toy to u. also a good way is to have a treat ready. if he brings back the toy to u, treat him and praise, if he stop half way, leave the toy and run to u for treat, remove ur hand and tell him to get the toy first. if he hesitate, don't correct him, just pick up the toy and start again.

if he takes the toy to u but don't give to you, hold the other end of the toy and say "let go" if he growls, just hold the back of his neck and say "let go" again. if he is tugging on it, you just have to get the toy from him by any ways (but dont beat him). bottom line, u need to win, meaning u need to get the toy, never let him win.if he wins, and after many times, he will think not worth listening to you. this could lead to behaviour problems later. make everyone practise this exercise with him, even ur kids.

one good example of this, is my friend, he used to take his Golden to a lake in Nova Scotia, Canada. there are many kinds of birds & ducks, so there was a dead duck on the grass, his dog picked it up and place it in his mouth, the law says u should not kill any animals at the park. so..one policeman saw him and say ur dog killed the duck, but he said, no the duck already dead. he tried to get the dog to drop it but it won't. the police also cannot do anything. so here he was with a golden with a duck in his mouth..when he comes home, he told the mother, the dog has a duck in the mouth and don't want to let go. the mother went to the dog and say "Dex, drop it", the dog automatic drop the duck. Moral of the story, if u have many people in the family, get everyone involved in the dog's life. so even when u r not at home and the dog has something in his mouth or whatever, your kids/grandmother/whoever can still do it.

good luck training! i miss Roxy when she was small (so cute) but also harder to train:)

OK..Where was I this morning...Oh yeah..
I was given

1. Some vitamin tonic for coat and skin- Claims (printed) to help removes flakes and promote healthy coat (India's production) Feed him 3 ml twice a day..VITA A---GOOD!Wink

2. Selemide (Wonder if this is the coorect spelling) shampoo and scrub. I m suppose to wet him and lather him well and scrub him down ( the scrub that we are talkin about is the floor scrub- What will happen to his coat lar..Unsure) and leave the med on for about 20 minutes before I hose him down..

3. A bottle of poison..I failed to get clear of what this item is...(for ticks?) Which I have to take 2 and 1/2 caps full and mix it with exact 2 litres of water..Then I ll have to apply to all over his coat..Then ...I ll have to leave it dry for 15 mins..Then? No washing or what so ever? ( I got to call the vet again for clarification) Poison wor..What if Ben licks it ?

Dear Kelsey,

Since you are able to train your dog so well, I think you should send her for advanced classes or Good Canine program or something, instead of the basic class....and I don't know, must you give your dog away if she works as a service dog, or maybe you can have her to do on part-time basis??? I'm very amazed that your husband has the dream to let your dog to help other ppl Smile I think our Goldens would be happy to help/work with ppl, if they are fit to be.....

And once a again, thank you so much for your tips & advices....Have a nice day Sly

Re: [WendyS] [beyond] SKin problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

your puppy need 3 full shot before going for OB classes. this is also to minimize infection that ur puppy may carry to other dog and to minimize ur puppy getting infected with disease, normally after 2nd shot, he will have a pretty good immunity from major diseases but precaution is sure better than cure.

wendy, well i am not training my dog for competition or anything. we just spend a lot of time, energy and effort lorWink that means have to sacrifice quite a few things. we spent almost every waking hour with the dog - training & playing with her, our time would only be after 8pm till next morning at 6am as she will be tired and just sit to rest or sleep. i will not sent her for advance class or anything. i will still maybe send her for basic OB. if we go to an OB class, it will be a good opportunity for my puppy to meet more dogs. we are working towards the Canine Good Citizen test. it's a little early to train her for CGC at 3 months but i guess, the sooner u train, the better.

Service dog is not very popular here since Malaysia have very strict law on dogs. but anywhere else in the world, it's popular esp to help ppl with disability and blind people. these dogs are train to do things around the house. they should be very very obedient. average to train a dog for service or guide dog, they start from 8 weeks, give them a test to see they can make it. about USD10,000 is spent on making these dogs into service dogs, normally they will prefer Labs (1st choice) and goldens(2nd choice). but the dogs will be given to the blind /disable people for free.

i saw on TV once, they have a special school / breeder who only breeds dogs as service dogs. if the puppy doesn't have the cut to be a service dog at 8 weeks, they will try again when he is 10 weeks, if still cannot, then they will sell him to a good home. my ex bf neighbour before train dogs to be service dogs. so he told me all this things the dogs need to do lah, and show me a few example. well yes goldens very happy to work. i think right now, i just want to train Roxy to help me around the house...save time mah.

have a good day too!

Is Roxy free to go anywhere of your house already? If yes, could you pls share with me how did you to do that, eg. how do you prevent her to touch anything in the house, etc....I'm sure it has to be done gradually, right?

Re: [WendyS] [beyond] SKin problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

ya lor. that is service dog, theraphy dog, any dog can be one, as long as the tempremant is ok, can shape into theraphy dog. Service dog have more to do. somewhat like ur maid on 4 legs lah:) or better service dog is like ur mother when u r young, have to pick up socks, put baju in w.machine, something like this lah.

actually she is still crated when we go to work, but when we are at home, she is free in the house. well u can't prevent her from touching anything:) u just have to puppy proof your house till she is more trained.Wink it's like having a 2 years old toddler running in the house, sure will break something. put shoes away properly on the shoe rack, if u have those nice ornaments that u put on the table, keep them in the cabinet. magazines underneath the coffee table, all have to be removed. don't leave table cloth dangling, of course u can train her not to touch this things, but that is if u r willing to tell her "no" every 5 seconds.

i don't want Roxy to hear too many "NO", so things i know i can avoid, i avoid, i only say no to her when she tries to mouth us. also don't let ur puppy know there is food in the rubbish bin. if u trained ur puppy, for eg, whenever she climbs on the rubbish bin, tell her firmly no. make sure ur kitchen bin have a lid. next time, u can be throwing chicken bone, she won't bother, cause she know later u will punish her.

daisy is adorable! ben is also adorable..ok lah miss already when Roxy is that age. well we took a couple of videos of her, she looked so tiny then and so ADORABLE! now as u can see on my avatar, she look more like a dog already. so ur daisy & beyond's ben will also look like this lor..so enjoy her/him while she is this cute.

Roxy is going for her final shot next weekend, by then she will be 14 weeks.she will be i think 25 weeks by christmas!! *shhhhiiiivvveerrssss* sure become monster already..haha

when we want to meet up hor?
