Looking to adopt guard dog

basically im looking for good guard dog to adopt since death of my pomenarian 2 weeks ago. Daisy wasnt much of a guard dog, but she was a real barker. Now she's gone, need one to guard as we live in a corner house with compound. family of dog-lovers. Currently have 2 dogs at home, a mongrel living outdoor and a shihtzu living indoors.

p/s willing to pay a small amount for pure breeds guard dogs if available (Dobs, Rotts, GSD etc)

thanks

Re: [jeff78] Looking to adopt guard dog

I had a mongrel who was a better guard dog than my purebred Rottie, Chewy, so dun expect all purebreds to be good watch dogs. One thing going for Chewy is her scary size and look. But depending on her mood, sometimes can even let the TNB man walk in to read the meter when I'm not home... Crazy

Re: [jeff78] Looking to adopt guard dog

a mongrel has natural guarding instincts if showered with love...if you avoid letting him going outside the house area to roam around the entire neighbourhood, then he will develope the protective instinct to your household...

Re: [boyz6676] Looking to adopt guard dog

If you can ask such a question about rotties and goldies, please do reconsider EVER having one of them UNTIL you have done your homework and check on what they need, when they need and how much they need...
the basic temperaments of rotties and goldies are worlds apart even though they are both protective over what they care for.
I have 4 dogs at home, each and everyone of them has some "fault" of some sort or were simply not pure bred so they were thrown away by people. BUT before I decided on adopting them I thought so hard until I had headaches about whether I can afford them, how much will their food cost, how much can I save up for neuter/spay, what happens if they don't get along, training and associated costs, but most importantly can I split myself into 4 to show them all how much I love them. My husband and I made a choice and never regretted it, BUT it is not easy as one of them is permanently ill and the other (3 months old) attempts to ruin EVERYTHING!!! Frown
Even though they might not be special to anyone else, they have saved my life more than once before (even the littlelest devil of mine).
I can only agree that with the appropriate care and immense love for your dog, no matter what breed it is, it will always be loyal to you.
Sorry for being very long-winded, but just to put you into perspective a bit more, on food alone for all 4 (they are not fat, just turned out to be very large dogs) I buy 25kg of food every 2 weeks. My biggest girl is 1, but doesn't eat much. My 2 middle ones are brothers at the age of 5 1/2 months and my youngest 3 months old only... My 3 month old girl is a Dalmation mix dunno what (my husbands friends' colleague found a Dalmation wandering on the road, took her in and the girl gave birth to 11 puppies... Crazy). My friend's rottie eats 25kg in 2 weeks at the age of 6 months... and that's just one huge dog...
Naturally I assume you provide them with at least moderately good food... I pay about rm300 per 25kg breeder pack, so you do the maths...
Bottom line is, you must know the breed you are opting for BEFORE you find a dog of that breed.
Sorry again for being longwinded...

Re: [boyz6676] Looking to adopt guard dog

if u compete golden retriever n rotts for a real guard dog,i will favor rotts.rotts inherently born with black color fur and fierce look which ed prevail the goldies 50 %(looks harmful and YENG).but u dnt worry rotts will be tht loss control or wht ppl usually called them insane, which i totally disagree.its all depends on how u cope with them.ive 3 rotts @ hm, 2 of thm are siblings, currently age 1 year plus.another veteran,my lovely Nike(4 years plus)...

More mention bout Nike, she is really a good guard dog to stranger, non stop barking until i approach the stranger which she thn assures thts my fren/relative.

Recently,my nanny has trained her another talent skill--(catching rats).Unbelievable, believe it!! My nanny had once observed a rat in my store room, immediately she opened the door and let Nike in.Eventually, she caught the rat,but not eating it la of course=)What amused me was now whenever i open my door, she will unreluctantly enter my hs herself, searching for rats. Sometime there are rats in the balcony and Nike will chase them till thy hide underneath the car...kakaka,whenever im going out,Nike will wait patiently beside my car.Once i reverse my car,the rat will scatter around and Nike begins her RAT HUNTING mission again=)

In short words, rotts are more preferable for a real guard dog and a rat destroyer. i deny the presumption of goldies are not good guard dog,but goldies tame and frenly look have grabbed the stranger's heart which thy think the goldie will be fren with them.

One more thing! You must spend some time training your rott yourself.thats the way to make him/her a real obedient and protective family guard dog.

HAVE A NICE DAY

Re: [nikemax] Looking to adopt guard dog

hahahahhaa .... a dog replacing a cat doing the mission on catching rats huh? hahahah... how to train that? LoL... hmmm... how nice.im so envy of those rottie owner sometime... i use to own a rottie named John as well, but he died due to old age. hmm... getting a new rottie isnt cheap, costing a few thousands if its from a good line. but... haizz... dun wanna mention bout that ald.. feel so sad whenever im thinking bout it. this coming 12th im following my dad to pick up our new home member . nike bro, mind if u send ur rottie's photo for my viewing? dun worry just wanna hv a look, as u know... i love rottie very much as u said.. they r so 'YENG' hehehhehe... and i nv see a rottie that know how to catch rats.. LoL boyz6676@yahoo.ca <---- can send to my email if its ok with u!! tq

Re: [boyz6676] Looking to adopt guard dog

All three of my dogs are good hunters - can hunt rats, squirrels and frogs in my garden. Hunting is not limited to a specific breed. My 13yo mongrel has always been a good ratter and now my 3yo Rottie and 2yo Dalmatian-mix have followed in her footsteps.

Re: [jeff78] Looking to adopt guard dog

jeff... just a friendly info... DO NOT use a dog as a guard dog.... if you are looking for a dog just to guard ur house... please think again... it is cheaper and easier and less head ache if u install the full package alarm system which includes cctv monitoring and also direct connection to the nearest police station.

A dog is a man's most loyal friend.
