happy owner of little shih tzu Can't Post

juz got my shih tzu few days ago..... female......

then suddenly realised i havent introduce her to this forum yet~~ lol

coz ive been in this forum for a long time to know more about puppies before getting one... but im stilll considered newbie la... knowledge is unlimited..

my lil shih tzu.. i call it Rainbow....

she is white and brown, with some dark brown around the ear and face area...

she seldom barks... and i mean, RARELY!! which is good.. as i live in an apartment :P

but my housemates keep on saying she is not a puppy, she is an overgrown hamster...BlushBlushBlush as she makes no noise..kekke

even at night when i sleep, i put her in the crate as not yet toilet trained.. really wish can sleep with her... she also make no noise...and the way she sleep very cute..eekss.. but no options to attach pic here

she is so cute, will follow us around when we walk, but she still cannot run properly, she always slipped...

she took the first jab from the breeder a month ago, and is due her 2nd jab this saturday... been planning to take him to the vet in genting klang, issit recommended?

and one more thing, her eyes have those mucus... how do i clean it? from the forum, some ppl suggested eye mo... how about the cleansers we use for our contact lenses? can we use that? pls enlighten me..

do those small red ants bite dogs? my house sometimes got those ants, really scared they bite my Rainbow... UnsureUnsure

Ello

Welcome to Rainbow... Wish u both many many happy moments together... Wink

Shih Tzu are nice apartment furkids... I used to have one laong time ago & he was also very quiet... very rarely utter a bark... he is laid back & poses like a royal majesty most of hte time... nowonder the imperial chinese keeps them as pets... Wink

How do the eye mucus look like?... hope not yellowish or greenish... most small quite prone to 'tearing' problem... if its really bad, u may try giving supplement to help improve the condition... otherwise, just wipe her face with face towel daily to clena her mucus... Wink also keeping the area around the eyes trimmed short be gud... dun look so messy

ALrite... hope u continue to have fun here & meet many many frens

Hello and welcome!!!

I used to have a shih tzu, he was also a rare barker but when it comes to guarding the house from strangers, he will bark lah.

Please take care of the eyes. To get rid of the mucus, use cotton swipes that you can buy from Guardian. Wet them in sterile liquid. I use those saline solution that get from the pharmacy in big bottles.. I think it's for contact lenses but it has to be natural saline solution. Shih tzu eyes also sensitive to dryness so buy a gel that you can get from vets or you can use Liquifilm tears. Do not use Eyemo, my vet adviced me not too... can't remember why... but it may irritate the eyes of a dog.

Red ants can bite, so better you get rid of the red ants. You can try this. Use a cloth that is wet with white vinegar and wipe the areas that red ants will come. Ants and some insects don't like vinegar smell.

Re: [shuwen84] happy owner of little shih tzu [In reply to] Can't Post

Yup, simple saline will do. Use the cotton pad to wipe the eye gently. Wet the cotton bad until it is soft and watery then wipe the eye. Don't use tissue paper coz it is rougher than cotton. You will have to hold the eye lid apart coz your puppy will try and close its eyes. The mucus on the eye ball, means I think your puppy got dry eyes. Get the eye drop I recommanded or get those eye gels from vet to put so the eyes will not get the dry irritation and it will have less mucus.

Not too sure about dry eyes... i have used the contacts wash solution for my furkids b4 to wash or flush our dirty stuff... recomanded by vet... Wink

U gotta trim the paw pad coz if it gets too long, ur furkid will slip all the time... there are some tips on keeping white in the grooming section I think...

you can choose to bring them out, but cannot let them walk on the ground and let them approach any dogs bcs their antibody still not strong yet.. hehehe..

Re: [shuwen84] happy owner of little shih tzu [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, Dr Gosh there is not bad. His consultation fee is quite low compared to other vets. It's better to have your Rainbow fully vaccinated before going out with other dogs. The vet will guide you.

Dandruff shampoo, you can get the dog ones. Sometimes dandruff occur from dry skin that is caused by not showering all the shampoo away. When shampoo is still on the skin, it becomes itchy and dry. An irritation will make your dog scratch. When you bring Rainbow to see the vet, ask the vet to check the skin also.

Dr Gosh is the vet at Genting Kelang clinic. I go there everytime.

There is also a vet in Brickfields, slightly more expensive than Dr gosh but good. It's up to you lah where you want to go.

All the normal stuff like vaccination, skin condition and stuf that don't need surgery, the Genting Kelang wan is good lah. But if you need like xray, surgery and other serious stuff, the Brickfields one got the equipment and the workmanship.

Re: [shuwen84] happy owner of little shih tzu [In reply to] Can't Post

Ohhh... better not bath so often. Will make her skin dry and she will have more dandruff and may have skin irritations coz the lack of natural oils on her skin and fur.

What shampoo you use? My shih tzu use Fido shampoo last time, the perfume can last quite long. Sometimes the odour/smell can come from the ears. My shih tzu last time will only become smelly if I never bath him for more than 1 week. He lives indoors but always go outdoors.

Your Rainbow smells like pee ah? Well, another way to handle this situation is trim the fur around her legs. If you think it's the feet that smells ah, just wash the feet with soapy water, no need the whole body.

If your Rainbow smells after a few days, I suggest you buy the powder dry shampoo. It's like shampoo but not soapy and in powder form. Smells nice.
