Hey webmaster khoo

since you are a fish enthusiast as well, have you ever kept flower horn fish? Am thinking of getting one, but i havent had much luck keeping fish in the past, so i dont want to get one then ahve it die on me. I kept some tetra and then some goldfish, and they kept dying till i thought i wasnt destined to keep fish.

but i saw this flowerhorn the other day which kept saying "Take me home!" with eqach gurgle... they are reserving him for me... do u know if this breed of fish is easy to keep? (sorry to post in the dog forum, but in the koi forum i'm a bit lost).

Re: [luckey] hello! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jenn,

It is definitely not difficult to keep fish a live in an aquarium. As long as you are able to keep your water is good condition, your fish will know how to take care of themselves. Unlike human and dog, fish live in an environment that is continuous polluted by the own waste. These waste consist ammonia which is extremely toxic to the fish. As long as you have a powerful filter to allow colonization of bacteria, your filter should be able to convert these ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate which is much less toxic to the fish. Nitrate value can be reduced by weekly partial water change.

I guess if you need further help, you can visit the fish forum at http://www.pets2u.com.my/aqua/

Hi Khoo,

Impossiblelah, i saw my replied to Jennifer last night, but how come this morning MIA lio. May be u didn;t treat the server well and coz my post MIA.TongueCool

Jennifer : I do have 3 flowerhorns with me, my uncle gave it to me about a year ago, since he has about 20 to 30 of them. Based on my experience, and what i had learnt so far, you need to keep the water fresh. So it must be change at least one a week. The ratio will be 25% to 35% of the tank. Do not change all the water at one go. Remember to put some anticlorene into the fresh water and as what Khoo mentioned, get a reasonable powerful filter will definately help.

Out of the 3 flowerhorns, one of them is about 1 ft in size and the forehead is real big or 'swallen'. Hahaha real beatiful, also don forget to monitor and maintain the water temperature like between 30 to 32c. You can use the aquarium light (the pink color one) to warm up the water and this will also help the pigmentation/coloring of the fish. The healthy flowerhorn, the color must be sharp and eye catching.

Do not feed small fishes for flowerhorns, this will eventually coz the body color become darker and it won't be that nice, so a small prawns/shrimps will do the job and also premium quality of fish kibble.

HI Boon

Thanks for sharing your experiences on flower horns... sounds like yours are very beautiful. BUt is there a way to tell whether the small ones will grow into big beautiful ones? (coz the bogs ones quite expensive!) I saw this small one whose head was starting to "swell" but the fish guy told me that one could not tell how big the forehead would get when the fish grew up. Also, is the color due to what you feed the fish, or due to genes?

hi jenn,

morning..... flower horn is very easy and it won't cost much to rare them....just maybe the fish food will cost abit but not that expensive.....sometime you just spend a ringgit or two to get some prawn for them to eat that you get from the fish shop....if you wan their color to change to red you can get some special fish food for them and also for their head to grow.........if you have one pair you need to divide the aquarium in to two protion then you will see them challenge each other then their color will turn real red........Wink

Hi Jennifer.

Hahha thanz for the kind wordsCool. KangSer is right, it won't cost you much to rare a few. OK from what i know the structure and online of an adult fish will only be able to see and show after 3 to 6 months. And bare in mind that even the forehead is growing by then, this doesn means that the forehead will continue growing and worse it will shrink. Yeap no kidding, i saw this happened many time in my friend's place, initially the bought the fish with beatiful coloring and full of pearl spots, but after a while (may be within a week) the color became lighter/fair and the spots MIA.

Actually u can have a injection into the fish to force the forehead, but the fish won't be able to last long, meaning the life time of the fish is at most 2 to 3 years. For a normal flower horns they can live to about 8 to 10 years. I personally not recommend to use the medicine to force the coloring and the fish's forehead.

OK for coloring, u can get the fish kibble called 'Poh Chen Hong' or direct tranalsation to english will be 'Warranty Red'. This will cost u a bit but trust me, is not even 1 or 2 % of what luckey and brinkley cost uTongue.

Do u have any idea how much the bogs one will cost u in KL ?

The Flower Horn is a territorial and solitary fish, meaning it's not recommended to keep more than 1 fish in an aquarium because they will fight until the fittest wins.

Re: [boon] hello! [In reply to] Can't Post

When you say the fish won't cost us 1-2% of what our doggies cost us, do you mean price of fish or upkeep? Seems like flowerhorn are quite expensive... saw one small one (but very cute) for RM580. I guess in fishfood it will be less than the dogs, but what about the chemicals and the water chages - do you have someone service your tank or you do all water changes yourself? hehe as youve prob worked out by now, i am a complete amateur fishkeeper!

but if young fish may look good young, but lose their forehead and pearls when they grow up, how can you be sure you are buying a quality one? (coz very expensive to buy full grown big forhead red one).

Re: [luckey] hello! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jennifer,

Yeap the cost is the upkeep/maintenance. Now a days, flowerhorns are very cheap in Penang. For those that from the beatiful parents and potentially will be a beatiful fish will cost you not more than RM 250.

The medicine/anti-clorene is at the very minimal cost. The only thing that trouble me the most is changing water weekly and i do it myself. I'm not aware that is there a service to hire some worker to come to your house to change the water for you. If yes, I don feel comfortable ans safe, due to the carelessness and in-experience of the worker may be. I'm sure that after all the hardwork for maintenance the fish, you simply don't want it to be out of water due to careless or lazyness right ?Wink

A reasonable powerful water filtering system will help a lot. A normal tank size for an adult flowerhorns will be at least 3 by 1.5 feets.

So do you plan to get one soon ?

Thanks for all your advice and help, Boon. Think I might wait awhile before I get one... I might not have the time at the moment to care for it myself (changing water etc) and I could do without spending extra cash at the mo Crazy didnt expect bills to be so high moving into our own house. Think we'll settle down first then think about it at a later date. Appreciate your help though!

heyhey,

Perhaps you could try 'oscar tiger'..they are strong fish and the only requirement you need to keep them healthy and alive is to adjust the temperature...like around 75-80...I have a pair of em and they are very very aggresive and whenever I lift the top open, they gonna swim to me!!!CoolUsually, they love to dig....i would really love to decorate my aquarium...a friend suggested a big rock (make sure that you boil it before putting inside the tank) so that they have more place to hide...hehe

They only require one time of feeding per day...and the question "how big can they get?" this was the question I asked the seller...like 12 to 14 inches!!!..so a big tank gonna do em good...

wish you best of luck.....Wink

Hi Jennifer,

Ah..OK, Good idea, cut some other expenses to indulge your pets. hahah but don spoil them OK. Wink. By the way, what brand of kibble/canned food u use to feed Luckey and Brinkley ?

By the way, is not a good idea to 'force' Brinkley to growth too fast, eventually the fast growing in the puppy age will caused HD and joint problem. Supplements is a big NO NO for large breed puppies. For a small breed is OK, but for lab and golden, only give after they reach the year of 2. I got this message from one of the lab forum in the states. They didn't give any supplements, even for coat until the pup is fully growth.

In lay man term, if the bones for a large breed puppy force to grow too fast, the 'compactness/density' of the bones will be reduced.

Hope this help.

hi boon

thanks for the advice... yeah my vet told us the same thing as well. I had started giving them "Teeth & Bones" manufatured by Seven Seas, coz petshop recommended it and it said on the label it was good for puppies and old dogs. Also coz i have started jumping them, so wanted them to have strong bones. But the vet said it was better not to give them anything for bones (although vit b etc is fine) coz if bones grow faster than tissue and muscle, it will cause problems.

For food, we give First Choice kibble, and Pedigree puppy canned food. As well as the puppy milk.
