I'm newbie Can't Post

Hi, everybody! I just signed up as member. This is a great site with so much information about dogs. Answers to many many questions. I wish I had discover this site earlier.

Well, I have kept a dog for almost 2 years now. Her name is Toby -- a mongrel puppy I found sleeping curled up next to a rubbish bin near my house, sheltered from the rain -- can you believe it -- almost TWO years ago? It seemed like yesterday. She came potty-trained: Toby will only urinate and defecate on grass; never never on concrete or solid surface. I don't know, probably her mother had time to instill some basic cleanliness habits before she was dumped near the rubbish bin. Anyway, I had to rescue her from all the cars that were passing by -- she could have easily been run over.

Now, she's fully grown, I think. Turned out to be a medium-sized dog. She is playful and obeys simple commands. However, there are kids around my house who tease her by throwing stones and sticks whenever I'm not around. Toby is never let out of the house and she doesn't cause problems to my neighbours. I don't know why those kids do what they're doing. They seemed to get a thrill out of seeing an animal behaving aggressively. They like to see Toby bark and chase them from one end of the fence to the other. I've told the kids off a few times but they are not repentant. Their unacceptable behaviour has made Toby somewhat aggressive towards small-sized people e.g. children. She would regard any child that walk past the house as a threat and start barking. So far Toby has never bitten anyone -- I've made sure she's trained never to let bare teeth touch human skin but I'm afraid further aggression shown by the kids will eventually provoke an accidental bite. Anyone facing similar predicament?

Hi welcome to the forum.

I won't say I have the same problem but I have a border collie which is 5 months old. I never let her out of the house but she will get aggresive when people come near her except for family members. I guess dog can sometimes be quite defensive towards people. In your case the children always try to hurt her then this will definitely give the idea that children are a threat. The best way is to get the dog outside and socialize with some children if possible. You must confince your dog children is not harmful. This will help. Don't just scold your dog or try to restraint her from barking it will not work.

Hello and welcome to the forum!!!

Well...I don't have the same predicament but all I can tell you is, those kids were not taught properly. Being compassionate to animals is one of the few traits that malaysian kids really lack. That's why we have this website. We hope to teach the public about responsible dog ownership and also change their perspective of dogs. Wink

Hello yckuan, Welcome BlushCoolCoolLaugh

hey, my fawn boxer is named Toby but a mals dog lah heheheh.....he is now 4 yrs old, I have 4 dogs all together heheheh....

She is so lucky.... just like my uncle's dog and my cat, both were rescued by me.... Now my uncle's mongrel is 5 yrs old, same as my cat hahahah.. Your Toby is so lucky...

I have the same problem as you, once, the kids became to noptti, malay kids lah, they took sticks to poke my dogs and threw stones.... right infront of my gate, I yelled and they laughed so I did a stupid but effective thing, I open the gate and took my friendliest dog on a leash to run after them, just to scare them lah and till today, none of those notti kids every dare to show their face around my area..... if you do catch a kid doing so, grab hold or run after the kid, he'll normally run straight home and confront the parents, that will teach them a thing or two...., I normally see a lot of parents ignoring their children when hey provoke my dogs, they just laugh and walk along... it is dangerous as this would mean the kids aren't afraid of dogs and one day, when they do come close to a stray, one of them might get hurt..... I've noticed that my dogs don't like small kids but I try to bring a kid or 2 like my cousins around to play with my dogs, let them socialise with young small people, you can do that, with a watchful eye lah...

Re: [yst323] I'm newbie [In reply to] Can't Post

Toby may be lucky to have me but I feel I am LUCKIER to have Toby. No matter how lousy the day turned out, whenever I return home Toby is always there wagging her tail, greeting me happily with her ears peeled back and she has this look on her face, I could have sworn I can see her grin! So in a way, I feel I made the right decision when I found her and kept her as my pet. Though there are times when having a dog becomes cumbersome e.g. leaving for holiday, but I don't think I will ever give Toby up...no, no. Now I understand why people say that dogs are man's best friend. They give their affections unconditionally and expects really, nothing in return.

I don't know about kids nowadays -- maybe too much Fear Factor, Maximum Exposure, Extreme Sports, etc. on TV and ASTRO. They seemed to want to dabble with danger and enjoy the excitement of having their buttocks being bitten by a dog! Whenever I take Toby out for a walk, the kids will come and surround us, and start taunting the poor dog just to make it bristle its hair and start barking at them. Then they giggle and jump away, only to repeat their act. They know I have the dog by the leash, so they aren't worried about being attacked. *sigh* All I could do was take Toby away as quickly as possible. I could see that she was very distressed by the kids' behaviour. I think Toby's bark is worse than its bite. She barks out of fear and distress, not so much of as a warning of an imminent attack.

Thanks for your advice. Yeah, I agree with you. I think the positive approach is to get Toby to socialize with kids who love dogs. Are your cousins free to come play with Toby?? Laugh

My cousins ah.... still very young to evnture out wor, one is 8 months and the other is going to be three heheheh.... what you can do is bring Toby out for walks near parks with children, don't let her walk in the park lah, then will get fined and scolded, then maybe she can get used to them....

Where do you stay? There are a few dog loving kids around my area. Whenever I bring my dogs for walks they always love to pat them.....

I know nowadays kids will terror even dogs. Maybe you try to let go and see what happen? Tongue (Just joking) Must try not to let the kids influence the dog or the dog will hate children no matter good or bad.
