Prank Calls for Rewards Can't Post

I lost my Labrador last week and have put up posters and flyers around the area. I have been receiving some calls - genuine and "prank" calls

I would appreciate it if anyone could help me as to how one handles the "prank" calls. Some of them are blatantly wrong and it's easy to handle those but i just got one that described my dog perfectly. They asked for a reward and said they would call me back in one hour to let me know where to meet them etc but they never called back (there was no caller ID but just "private call" shown on my phone). Should i consider this as an opportunistic prank call or should i worry that my poor dog is in the hands of these "reward grabbers" ???

If they call back, arrange a meeting in a public place in the day time. Insist that they bring your dog along. Agree to a reward but don't agree on the amount but ask them how much they feel is appropriate - say it is so that you can be sure that you have enough money on you.

Get several friends to be at that public place but ask them so sit around in small groups and pretend NOT to be your friends but just members of the public. Have a friend sit in their car with the engine running in case the finder does a runner.

Meet with the people and have a friend with you. Someone who will be cool and rational if things get heated. Get your dog back first and foremost.

Deal with the finder after - pay a reward if you feel that the person happened to find your dog and is being opportunistic in seeking a reward. Beat the hell out of the a@#e-hole if they stole your dog to extort a reward or is a time waster.

Hope you get your dog back safely.

Re: [Gus-Gus] Prank Calls for Rewards [In reply to] Can't Post

hey thanks for the advice . one needs to be rational when dealing with people like that on the phone. it turned out to be a crank call. they didnt have my dog.they were just hoping that i'd just give them the money.

BUT we did manage to find our lab on friday night about 10 minutes away from home! :) a kind family had taken her in and called us after seeing our posters. i am so very HAPPY!!!!!

I'm so happy for you that you have recovered your dog. What a wonderful piece for news. Some ppl are really scum to try and pull a con like that when you're distressed at the loss of your pet. Thank heavens for the kindly person who took in your dog and called you when they saw the posters.

To all those ppl who try and take advantage of others in distress when their dogs are missing, there is a special place in hell just for you.
