E-Collar Training Can't Post

Hi ALL,

I just got my 1st ever dogtra e-collar this week from USA. I guess e-collar training is still new in Malaysia and not many dog trainers/owners used it or know about it.

I hope by starting this POST, we could share experience on this topic.

FYI, I am a new to this type of training too but had done some search on the net and starting to know sikit-sikit lah. I have not starting to train my Doberman yet........Will train him this weekend on this new method....CHEERS! HAPPY K-9ing!

Re: [acsyen] E-Collar Training [In reply to] Can't Post

I am new to this method but it getting popularity in USA. U can check websites like "Sit Means Sit", gundogs training, or K9 training for more details. I tried it on myself too, I felt like a nick shock which is very smiliar to those mini electrical accupunture equipment which we gave to our parent to massage......haha.

It is like a romote choke collars which used to signal to our dog when they make mistake.

My dog has been eating dirts, sand, cat poo...............when I let him run around for exercise. Big dog needs plenty of exercise mah. I used to scream my heart out when seeing him eating foreign objects, and have to run to him before he swallow it. Most of the time, too late....

Just used it this afternoon, Very very effective.

It is good for obedience training too.

P/S: Very important! Do not punish by using this method (by increasing the level higer than the acceptable level).

Rhett Kermicle On E-Collar Training Tips

1. The Number 1 rule of using an electronic collar can never be overstated: Use the collar only to reinforce commands that your dog already knows. Nor can the second most important rule: Always use the lowest correction level that your dog responds to. If you can honestly say you are following these two rules every time you train, you’re on your way to success.

2. When working on different commands with an e-collar, it’s important to keep your dog “balanced.” Don’t drill your dog on the “Here” command for five days straight and then expect him to stop the next time you reinforce a “Whoa” command with the collar. Instead of stopping, he’ll probably try to come back to you because that’s what you’ve been conditioning him to do. Be fair; make sure your dog has a clear understanding of each command, and then keep drilling him on those commands alternately. If your dog freezes as if confused, he probably isn’t confident in responding to that particular command. Go back to square one and drill on that command until the dog is responding with enthusiasm.

3. Occasionally you might have to increase the stimulation level to get your dog’s attention. For example, if your dog is distracted by a passing jogger while you’re calling him and he ignores your command, you might have to go up one or two levels to get him to comply. This doesn’t necessarily mean you will always need that higher level. After compliance with a command, go back down to the level you were originally using. In most cases, your dog will continue to comply like he always did.

4. Once you’ve finished your yard training and your dog is responding well to your commands, take the dog to new places and repeat these drills. This is a true test of how well your dog knows the commands. You’d be surprised how quickly a perfect dog seems to forget everything you taught him as soon as you’re in a different location full of new sights, smells and sounds. Continue to reinforce these lessons until your dog understands that your commands always matter.

Careful Vic, it is not as easy as you think, that is why there are courses for the usage of the collar. Reading on the web are just sales pitch.

Amanda,

This is not advertisement! I am not selling the products. Just post here to share and learn with others who are using it to train their dogs.

PSY,

I am still learning on how to use it. You are right, it is not easy! Still training Rolex with combination of long leashes and e-collar.

I am using very low level to train Rolex and will not rush to get the result fast becoz too high level of sitimulation will affect the behaviour of dog negatively.

Re: [Vic Tea] E-Collar Training [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Vic,

I would just like to share my short experience with using the E-Collar. I used it for agility training. I would not deny the fact that it is effective as you get control of the dog over a distance. It is effective in stopping the dog from doing a behaviour that your dont want as it stops the dog dead in his track. However, I also notice that it kills the drive of the dog. The dog stops working in a cheery happy mode. He becomes very cautious of his every move.

Another side effect is that after while, the dog can become collar smart. As it he will perform your commands as long as the collar is on. However, when the collar is off, he becomes a totally different dog.

Above are the 2 effects which I have noticed. And note that I used the E-Collar for training under the supervision of an experienced instructor.

Good luck with the usage of the E-collar and do share on your experience. Looking forward to them.

Janthk,

Thanks for your advices. I totally agreed with the two main problems of using e-collar. Some forum did mentioned about it. I will doing both with and without e-collar (with long leash) when training my dog. Will keep in mind your advice.

Cheers!

Brilliantly put as for drive you can also use the collar to improve drive but the knowledge of when is very important hence in short if you have no formal training on how to use refrain from doing so as one can actually give this method a bad name just like prong collars and to some degree choke collars.

Hi Kelly,

Your youtube's dog training tips are very useful!! Thanks!

I do noticed that your e-collar training is different from other pro-trainers in two simple ways:-

1) You use more paging than nick (e-stimulation). This is good as this method will not kill dog's drive.

2) You attach leash directly yo e-collar while most trainers recommend leash on second collar. I tried your recommendation and found out what you said is right. "Effective"

One question: How to prevent "collar smart"?

Thanks!!!
