highland vacation for pets

Hello all

I am always thinking of places like highlands to bring my pet for a vacation. Something like Genting Highlands?? Cooling isnt it?

Well, we know that lots of hotels and apartments do not allowed dogs right? Anyone, here who had the experience in 'seludup'-ing them in?

Do really hope to bring him along though. To enjoy the view and also the cold weather up there. Cool
Regards
Lisa

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Hi Lisa,

I had managed to bring snuffy up to an apartment before Genting twice during her puppyhood period. It was really not easy as I was all the time trying to avoid her being seen and could not get out of the apartment as she will start barking and crying.

She really enjoyed it especially the weather, other than playing and eating, she sleeps most of the time.

Hahah I really thought of that before, but then my other half said that its better not as not easy to enjoy the outside entertainment when Teddy is around. So... Frown

Will bring him there for a day trip to enjoy the view and cooling air though! Cool

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Hi Lisa,

my 13kg Kiki had gone on vacation to Penang and Cameron Highlands recently. I sneaked her twice into hotels (through the lobby, reception and into the common lift) and once into a challet. Don't ask me how as it was a long story. All I can say that both dog and owner must possess the sneaky character and skillful art of trespassing. My dog is extremely good in understanding us and she knew what she was doing. She is trained to hide under blanket and stay put while we handcarry her through the lobby, swimming pool , into the lift and up to the room. She is also trained not to bark when she is "illegally' boarding in the hotel. It is a stressful adventure and you can't go wrong at any stage- i.e. starting from the drive-in entrance of the resort guardhouse, your dog must start its hiding in the car (in our case we had an aero-back which opens up to the boot which she has access in hiding).

Judging from your dog size I would say it is "wet-wet water" to do it provided it doesn't bark. But I wouldn't do it again because it is too stressful for me, my husband and KIKI. She deserves to be treated as a legal immigrant and my subsequent trips was arranged legally, which was much more enjoyable, not to mention pricey!

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Hi Lisa,

Yes, I managed to bring snuffy up to my dad's apartment slightly before Gotong Jaya. Even then, it was really not easy as those are apartment where the management sublet the unit out as holiday resort and there is a reception area. I only managed to do it when snuffy was really young and small (when she was 2 months and 4 months old), where I could hide her into a big bag and quickly run up to the apartment when in the building.
We have another problem whenever we need to go out, which is we always wait till she is sound asleep before we able to get out and can never go out for long, as worry too much of her. I really hope that one day, we could bring our doggy anywhere we want without all those worries at all.

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

*sigh* ....isn't there a Hotel or place that we can bring the dogs legally??? Fr what I can see..anyone who haas actually gone on vacation with their dogs are actually "sufferring" Do we seriously have to play hide n seek with the hotel ppl? Aiiii....what a cruel world!! I am so tired of hiding my dogs...I am not ashamed of them, so why should I keep them fr sight just because a few "special" ppl don't like them. I stay in an apt...although the management has warned me several times that I can't bring dogs ..I still do it anyway, slap me with a law suit if they want. I mean it's like I feel if everyone just join hands and stand up for what they believe ...I believe the authorities or even the hoteliers or cafes or restaurants will relent.
That is just my point...not trying to spread propaganda ya.....

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Hi Lisachiew,

I share your frustration in not being able to take our furkids out for a simple thing like a walk in the park without being penalised or sometimes shouted at. Vacations? We have to resort to play hide and seek! But living in Malaysia in a multi-racial,multi-cultural society, I guess this is something we have to work at or bear with.

Your suggestion to for the authorities to build a special purpose park for dogges is excellent. But I seriously doubt they will spend the taxpayers monies to do that. The closest thing we can hope for is for some generous towkay who is a doggie fan to donate such a park (to be run and maintained privately) for canine owners like us to enjoy..BUT this is naive and wishful thinking though. More likely we have to start a fund to build such a park ourselves. No one is going to help us but ourselves.

In the meantime, in my own way, I make it a point to ALWAYS clean up after my furkids ALL the time especially in public places. Keep our dogs on leashes at all times in public. Hopefully, this will help to drive home the message that not all dog owners are "tidak apa" attitude and we do NOT treat the area outside our homes as public toilets.

Forgive the ranting...Unsure

Re: [arthur] highland vacation for pets

I don't quite share your view in bearing with the current situation...Singapore is a mulit racial society..how come the parks, even the beaches are dog friendly..I brought my gramdma's dalmation there for a walk...everyone was ok with it..if special ppl comes along..they will just walk away or just behave normally. What I don't understand is that how can Malaysia hope to be a world class tourist attraction or achieve international recognition, if it can't be tolerant to dogs??? Sish...what is the world coming to?
I believe in saying what I think..so no offence to anyone or even the authorities. But Small ppl like us can't do anything..this I agree, but small ppl like us can make Big noise to the BIg ppl...so they can do something abt it. Look at what happened to the dog licence thingy...the public raised their objection thus the council had to revert the fees to it's original fee. And what about the 2 dog per hse ruling thingy???
It just goes to show that...a small voice is better than none...so we can either try to bug the Big guys or we keep quiet and play hide n seek all day.....

Re: [kaerb] highland vacation for pets

Hi Kaerb,

Singapore is a good example you have bought up. Even though they have a multi-racial, multi-cultural society like us, then major ethnic group is different.Guess this translate into an inherently more canine tolerant enviroment which filters down to the masses. Even then, I believe there is only one canine specific park (Bishan park or something like that) where dogs are encouraged.

You are right that the little people can have a say in a democratic society. Like I mentioned before, it is up to us to plead our case. One good case is in the Taman Rimba Kiara park. Originally, the signboard (put up by DBKL) mentioned that dogs are allowed in the park PROVIDED they are on-leash and the owners MUST clean up after their doggies. Seems fair enough which no responsible dog owner would object. If only ALL parks run by the respective municipal councils follow this lead. However, if not ALL parks, then like Lisachiew mentioned, then earmark some specific parks that are canine friendly.

Let me transfer my voting place to Subang Jaya and I will send a note to my MP. How about that?Sly

Hi Author,

Sigh... I think the fact that this country is Islamic country although it is multi-racial,multi-cultural society, so it is really difficult for them to even consider to do as what we hope for our canine 'peng you'. CrazyUnsure sob sob

Your suggestion for the authorities to at least put the sign of canine is allowed as long as its on leash.. etc, it is really good. Maybe we can actually write a letter up to the STAR and complain or suggest about it?

Well, lets pray that our canine 'peng you' hv a brighter future in walking where ever they want!!! Laugh

Re: [arthur] highland vacation for pets

Hi Arthur,

Very good suggestion, proposal of sign board at park to be all dogs must be on-leash and owners must clean up after the mess.

I would say that a lot of times, general dog's owner reputation is also being spoilt by a certain irresponsible dog-owners out there. There are still alot of irresponsible dog-owners that let their dog run loose from the house (the owners are not even with the dogs) whenever they want to, especially night time and that expose not only danger to the dog itself but as well to the other ppl around it and the authority should at the same time impose a rules on a heavy fine/penalty for irresponsible dog's owners that let their dog run loose without leash by purpose and not cleaning after their dog's mess at public places.

Talking about irresponsible dog owner who lets the dogs out in the night.

Previously, one of my neighbours always let their dogs loose. And stupidly the dog always come over to my place and argue with my dogs outside.

Its pretty irratating as it is very noisy and disturbing other neighbours too. Especially my next neighbour is malay. Sigh...luckily right now they control that dogs. If not....... Unsure

Re: [kbs] highland vacation for pets

Hi Kbs and Lisachiew,

Thks for your replies. In regard to park signboards, guess we can bounce some ideas here in the forum. Plan A write in to DBKL / MPSJ / MPPJ to ask that dogs be allowed in their parks provided they are always on leash and owners clean up after their pets. Plan B is to be more specific and petition a particular park to be designated as a canine friendly park (Taman Rimba Kiara is an excellent candidate) Plan C is to enlist the help of our respective parent associations or clubs to write in to the authorities on this proposal.

Personally, I think Plan B and C in conjunction would do the trick, supported by a signature campaign. Sly

As for the irresponsible dog owners you've described, it becomes even more important for us to show a good example. There was a case in Japan where dogs were intially banned from this particular apartments. The dog owners started an aggressive campaign to promote good canine citizen manners ie. dogs always on leash in public areas, cleaning up after their pets (and in many cases after other people pets as well!) Eventually, the apartment committee relented and gave their official consent for dogs to be allowed in the apartments premises. Like our friend Kaerb says, power to the little people!Sly

Hello Arthur,

I am fully supportive of your ideas, especially Plan C. As a recognised association, I believe MKA has the necessary clout to bring the proposal to the relevant authorities. And yes....a parallel petition would lend credibility to the cause.

MKA and the bird people share the rental of Padang Merbok from Petaling Garden ( If I am correct ). I guess anyone wish to hold doggie in PM will have to speak to MKA, prepare some proposal to them so that the committee can evaluate it and approve/reject them accordingly. This is a time consuming works

Re: [Khoobg] highland vacation for pets

oh i see... does anyone here know people on the committee of MKA? Are the committee mostly just conformation show people? I'm thinking there aren't enough doggy events in a year, although maybe i'm just impatient coz can't wait to do stuff with my doggy!Tongue but if we could have more obedience competitions, it might make more people train towards better standards in obedience and then also agility... at the moment, most people doing obedience lessons only want their dogs to be good citizens, but if they ahve many shows to go to where they can compete for higher honors, i am sure it would be a hit.

How many other activities do the hold apart from the regular all breed champs?

Re: [luckey] highland vacation for pets

As a member of MKA, you can make any proposal for their consideration by submitting an official submission. All proposal made will be presented to committee for their consideration and approval /rejection during the regular committee meeting. As there will only be some 10 committee meetings in one year, decision do not come immediate.

To find out more on how to make some proposal to MKA, give a call to Mr. Michael Wan at .

Hi! ArthurSmile

U have very good & smart ideas..... Plan A, B & C but I fully support to your Plan C which I think is the best and you are the right person & capable of leading us to go for this Plan C ....... like submit a joint proposal/suggestion to the to help talk to the relevant authorities to establish a dog friendly park.

If you required any help from us/forum members and I am sure some of them are willing to help & would give their full support, too.

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT THIS SUGGESTIONS?

By the way, Arthur! Do you have the Malacca Map for this coming 17/11/02 MKA Dog show? Where is this Pay Fong High School located? Sorry, I ask U for the Map because your previous Ipoh's map really help without wasting time & petrol in locating the place. Thanks again.

Hi

I was so angry last night, me & teddy was shoo-ed away by the 'special' waiter when I went in to a drinking place some where in Klang (those other waiters/waitress which is not 'special' was actually taking my orders). Well, the reason he gave us was some special ppl here will complain. Sigh!!! MadMadYeah saw some of those special ppl having dinner there. UnsureMadIt is not like I am letting Teddy roam around the place. I really wonder how come it is such a BIG issue and against the law(??) that to bring our little canine member along? Sigh.!!!

I think that it will be better if most of those 'yumchar' places put a sign board out that no ANIMALs allowed. Wouldnt that be NICER? Crazy

Eventually, my friends, teddy and I went to another place NON-halal cafe. Well, surprisingly they even hv a dog themself tied up behind their cafe.

Re: [arthur] highland vacation for pets

Hi Arthur & Co

I wish you luck. I know that with some determination from the authorities things can be turned around. At one of my past homes the local community were having lots of problems with roaming dogs and people were being attacked and hospitalised. Many people hated dogs and even I hated walking down the street with my young son for fear of these roaming dogs.

Anyway, someone/people on the local council just made a decision to do something about it (I really don't know why). They decided to enforce the laws that were in place banning dogs on the loose. They enlisted the help of the post office, as postmen often bear the brunt of these types of dogs. It ended up you NEVER saw a dog on the loose, behaving badly. Local council officers, not only would collect registration, but would visit every household at least once a year asking 'do you own a dog?', 'does your neighbour have a dog?', 'have you ever seen the dog loose in the street?'. It sounds invasive, but it worked well.

People got back confidence in dogs because they didn't see these dogs with irresponsible owners behaving badly. Until we see only responsible pets and their owners, I think people will resist using the case of dogs from irresponsible owners as an unfair excuse to penalise us all.

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Want to Get a Dog Park in Your Community?
Start Walkin' and Talkin'
The best way to start a dog park or run in your neighborhood is to go out and talk to people who have dogs in hand. If they are out walking their dogs, chances are they would enjoy the chance to discuss a dog run in the community with you. Don't be shy; ask if they would like to join a committee. Grab a few people (you don't need a lot, just 5 or 10 folks who are passionate) and set up a time to meet at someone's house to discuss the next step.

Next Step: Where Should It Be?
You and your new group will need to ascertain a spot for the dog park. Most small dog parks are no bigger than an acre. Once you have nominated a site, it helps to let the community know of your plans ... just in case your newly picked spot interferes with a neighbor's rose garden. It also helps to get petitions signed. Try posting notices about the proposed dog park in pet stores, grooming shops, animal clinics and grocery stores. Write or email local newspapers to see if they could do a small story about the idea to gain more public awareness. After a while, you should have enough names to submit a letter and all of your signed petitions to your local parks and recreations department. You'll need to write a clear outline about the need for the dog park. It helps if you focus more on how the park will benefit the community as a whole instead of how it will benefit the dogs. The parks department will then be able to tell you if the area you have selected is available to you and your group, or they may suggest another area for you to consider.

Who Pays?
Once the area is designated as a place to support a dog park, you'll need to seek funds to build and prepare it. Funds can either be acquired through your local government or by private contributions. Either way, your city will probably insist you have the following amenities to make the park safe and usable:

-A fence with double-gated entry and exit
-Nearby parking
-Handicap accessible
-Water fountains for both dogs and owners
-Seating
-Shaded areas
-Poop bag dispensers
-Trash cans

Scooping the Poop
You'll want to immediately organize a dog park council or group to help maintain and monitor the park. The city will also need to know who to call in the event there are issues or other concerns from neighbors or other members of the community. This council will also be responsible for developing the rules of the park, cleaning up after hours, mowing the grass, mending fences, etc. You'll also be responsible for setting up meetings with your city officials to assess the park's success and what needs to be improved.

Is It Worth It?
After reading all of this, you are probably asking yourself if all this effort is really worth it so that a bunch of mutts can run around for an hour everyday. The answer is "Of course!" Dogs need a lot of exercise and a dog park is the perfect place to let them roam free and find playmates. It's also a perfect place for you to relax, read a book and know that your dog isn't going anywhere. And, in case you need further convincing, a dog park is also a great place to meet new people and make new friends. So, go on out there and form a committee today. Your dog will thank you for it later!

Just something I grab from net. Hope its not for advertising purposes. Maybe this can help?

Regards
Lisa

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Tongue Prior to reading/seeing this thread, my dad suggested that we take a trip up to Fraser Hill with our furkids.

Other than takut some 'special' people might be screaming/screeching their heads off when they see dogs, we're also worried that the furkids might not tahan the ride up.

My Chelsea puked when I took them to a waterfall near Kuala Kubu Baru... poor baby.

Wah....!! You can bring your furkid to the office ah? So nice! Must be very nice, having a companion that never talks behind your back with you during a hard day's work. (^_^)

Doggies : Will work for belly scratches and occasional treats.

As for Chelsea, I'm not sure. I guess it's motion sickness; the road is pretty 'curvy'. She never had problems during car rides, only during that time.

Re: [mackmack] highland vacation for pets

reservations were made by a sporean friend from spore itself.

the truth is they never mentioned that dogs were coming (and the management never expected the spore civil servants to bring their dogs either as dogs would have to be quarantine before they can come into msia).

anyhow, we stayed at richmond bungalow for the first night (they have a shih tzu too by the name of max) and the 2nd at spore bungalow.

shalom was with me at all times...she roamed the garden. did her peepoo...under supervision and of course we cleaned up the garden each time after her poo. she slept with us in the room...and none of the caretakers complained.

they did mention that dogs were not allowed...but since we were there liao..and shalom was quiet (no barks), they played along with us.

AND shalom also went with us to bukit tinggi. walked her at colmar. brought her to the hotel lobby as well (mummy needed a pit stop). no one complained!

i reckon it was because it was not the peak season then...but we had attracted quite a crwod with her. some folks wanted to carry and pet her.

then we were also at genting highlands. borught her in to eat at the lake view restaurant. i heard it is halal...but the chinese waitress said nothing and escorted us to our table and even asked questions about shalom.

walked the theme park (indoor) with her in my arms. sat at starbucks (first world)...not insidelah. the kind staff said inside cannot as some customers might mind...no prob...she liked it ouseide anyway. ordered our drinks and shalom had her kibbles and water while we yumcha and talked nonsense.

she's been a good dog for travelling. either she is sleeping or chewing her winnie the pooh...never mind the fact that we were zipping the hills..(actually the trip up to the 3 highlands was meant for my husband and his friend to cream some hills). at first i was worried that she might be mabuk...but she turned out to be so good...I AM A PROUD MUMMY!!!!

she stayed the same during our drive back to kluang as well. so i reckon she is travelling doggie. Laugh. so next place would be penang.

Re: [Twenko] highland vacation for pets

you may want to consider giving either motion sickness medication?

shalom was in my arms or even on the floor during teh journeys...and we have also taken her familiar belongings along eg her winnie and her kain busuk(s). so maybe those helped at all times. even when we go for short drives in town...her winnie will always be taken along. some days she holds winnie in her mouth even when we are taking the lift down. i leave it to herlah...she seems to sayang winnie a lot...so if she opts to turn back and bring winnie along...i'll just let her do so. otherwise...it'll be daddy who'll be carrying winnie on her behalf.

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

just open up for discussion ok..

i m just wonder, (even I would like to go for a drink with my dogs), sometimes i saw ppl bring their dogs (mostly breeded) go for the chinese food stalls. they will sit their dog on beside them (on the chair).

ok .. this is what they will do.. if the dog trying to jump off the chair or run around : they will shout : NO, STAY.

If the dog bark on ppl passby, then they will shout : NO, QUIET/ SHUT UP.

in this case.. what's the point we bring out the dogs? they are just suffer. i m sure they feel more happy if they can run free and left in the house.

on the other hand, i feel upset malaysia is a muslim country and most hotel they dont allow dogs/pet. anyway, we can't do anything about it, we need to respect others i think? imagine we curi curi bring in our dog, how are we going to enjoy our vacation? we have to hide them in the room, or hide together with them, if this is the case, we better bring them to kota kemuning park and can let them run free, swim deep .. think they will feel more happy. some more imagine we cant be so selfish and the room is not owe by us, after we check out, may be the next customer is a muslim, we shouldn't let them stay in a room that a dog stay before even they don't know about this? this is very rude and very irresponsible to others. correct me if i m wrong.

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Hi, being in the hotel business myself, i may have the answer to why animals are not welcome in food outlets.

first of all, as you said because of the "special" people that we have to respect, it's a special country.

second and most important, HYGIENE. it is by the law forbidden to have an animal in a food and beverage outlet. the authorities (jabatan kesihatan)are allowed to close the place if they find that the degree of hygiene is not respected, including having pets in the outlet.

Hope that it will help people to understand and not blame the outlet nor the SPECIAL people for that.

Thank you

Re: [kaerb] highland vacation for pets

what pple think dogs are unhygenic? must be because dogs sniff butts (in greeting), sniff faeces (sometimes eat them), males spray their perfume on every vertical post, and the drooling doesn't help their image either.

Where else, cats clean themselves. What pple don't realized is that cats do carry ticks, fleas and mites too.

Re: [sun-arrow] highland vacation for pets

That's why it's all animals including cats. The reason why stray cats are not removed from the premises is because they're very good at avoiding traps and can be quite costly to relocate and the management may not bother to cough up the money to remove them. So, they leave it to their staff or restaurant patrons to shoo them away.As a matter of fact, in my opinion, I think cats are more dangerous as they can transmit diseases to pregnant women that affects the amniotic sac surrounding the baby.

In the previous postings someone took their furkid to Bukit Tinggi. Actually they do not welcome pets but the horse stable are okay with dogs. There is a German Shepherd X there from SPCA named Kailie. Me and my husband built the little house for her as we felt sorry that she had to sleep on the cold cement floor all night. If you visit there, please bring a treat or two for her. She is very gentle and good with horses but beware if your furkids get too close to the horses because some are a bit nervous and may accidentally kick your furkids and the result may be disasterous. And when at the rabbit park there, do not bring your furkids. Rabbits can tranfer disease to dogs and the rabbits there are not that healthy.

Why do you consider teaching a dog to behave in a civilised manner making it "suffer"? If you want your dog to stay wild, then you shouldn't even keep it in the house, leave it as a stray! My husband & I bring our pup out and have trained her to sit quietly under the table when we eat. Although we didn't shout at her or beat her, there was quite a few stern warnings issued during the course of her "training". It wasn't easy for us to eat in peace (we also "suffer", you know!) but then again, teaching human kids is no different!

We have to teach our pets the same way we teach our human kids, whether its socialising or learning to be obedient. Far worse are the owners who don't say anything even when their pet has done something wrong! Or who make stupid comforting noises when their dog growls/barks - this only makes the dog thinks that it's the right behaviour!

Our dogs want nothing more than to please us so we should take the trouble to show them how - not shut them up in the house just because we can't be bothered to discipline them.

Re: [chaelian] highland vacation for pets

Oh ic, I m sorry if my words against u, that’s why I say just open up for discussion. I'm just curious why ppl do that in a chinese restorant, because all the while I'm so silly that thinking a dog is still a dog.Laugh

A kid is a kid, if a kid won’t run, won’t laugh, won’t naughty, I think must be some problems with this kid?Crazy There is school for kids; there is training center for dogs. Trying to ask a dog behave like a patung especially in human eat place is totally not hygiene and I worry others might think we are just trying to show off our dogs?Crazy True we have to socialize our dogs, but probably in a proper place? What u comments is totally argree by me, we should always teach our dog from time to time. I think puppy forum gathering is the best activities for us have a chance to teach our dogs what’s accepted by us? Emm.. What do u think?Smile Probably we should remind ourselves: Chinese food court selling human food. There is no dog food selling there. We love dogs doesn’t means others. We think dogs are part of our family but not others. We should always try to think of others. I'm just worry the more stubborn we are the more dog's right will be restrict. Do proper thing in proper place in the right time. Hopefully more café open up in Malaysia that’s openly welcome both human and dogs, then we can enjoying our meal with no worries of others!SlySly

Re: [shyeow2] highland vacation for pets

"A kid is a kid, if a kid won’t run, won’t laugh, won’t naughty, I think must be some problems with this kid?"
- I've met many well-behaved children and dogs so I don't think that civilised behaviour is unusual. Don't forget that children learn from watching adults so if a kid is doing all those things you describe, there's something seriously wrong with the parent!

"Trying to ask a dog behave like a patung especially in human eat place is totally not hygiene"
- Firstly, nobody expects either their child or their dog to be a "patung". However, there's such a thing as civilised behaviour like NOT disturbing others and learning to keep still. Secondly, if you say that the very presence of a dog contaminates the whole place, then you definitely should not own any pets! As long as your dog is not actually using the utensils, there's nothing unhygenic about bringing a dog to a restaurant. After all, blind people with guide dogs do it ALL THE TIME in other countries! In fact, in many Western countries, they encourage pets in certain hospital wards! Are you saying that they're filthy?

"I worry others might think we are just trying to show off our dogs?"
- "Showing off" implies that you go from table to table carrying your dog and telling people how wonderful it is. I've never seen any dog owner do this. If I did, I'd call the doctors!

"True we have to socialize our dogs, but probably in a proper place?"
- Socialising doesn't mean just "playing" - it's knowing how to behave properly in the given circumstance. What is a "proper place" anyway?

"Chinese food court selling human food. There is no dog food selling there. We love dogs doesn’t means others. We think dogs are part of our family but not others. We should always try to think of others. I'm just worry the more stubborn we are the more dog's right will be restrict. Do proper thing in proper place in the right time."
- Food court also doesn't sell breast milk - are you saying that we shouldn't bring babies there? There are also people who can't stand children - are you saying that we should not take our children out of the house in order to "think of others"?

Re: [chaelian] highland vacation for pets

Hi there chaelian,

If only you can bring your argument to the jabatan Kesihatan and convince them on how hygenic our pets are I'm sure they'd allow our pets to dine with us. It would take a miracle considering first and foremost because we are in an Islamic country. If we were in Vietnam, dogs would be on the menu. Or, how nice it would be to dine next to a rat lover with ten rats as rats are actually very clean animals and intelligent. Or snake lovers (I'd be terrified).Take into account that PETS do not only cover dogs or cats . Personally, I would love it if I could eat with my pup but only with fellow members from puppy.com because all are responsible owners. The fact is there a lot of irresponsible owners in Malaysia and I don't fancy my dog catching a disease from an irresponsible person's dog. For us, our pups are our babies, for others just for protection therefore proper vaccination / upkeep may not be their main priority.

But slowly things are changing in Malaysia. As some members in the forum have said, there's more of us in this forum and the numbers are increasing everyday. With our numbers, someday we could do something and hopefully raise a fund to buy a piece of land for a cafe with kiddie pools for our pups to cool down in and have evening BBQ's for us and our pups to socialize.

Take into account that our country is slowly adapting to the handicapped's needs (which very important). As it is in year 2004, there are many places here that are still not handicapped friendly yet when other countries are more progressed in this area. Which applies to pet owners in that someday, with the eradication of irresponsible dog owners (remember the old lady(dead) and kid bitten by rottis) and aggressive promotion of responsible owners and dog awareness among Malaysians I'm sure our pups will be welcome everywhere. It will be possible, someday, hopefully in our generation.

As for us, our biggest problem is we are Muslim, my husband French and I am Malay. I grew up with Dobermans. According to our religion, we can touch dogs however the saliva must be avoided, my theory is because of rabies in the old days. But this can be remedied by washing the saliva afflicted area with mud or modern translation soap. However nowdays, even dog hair is offending to some Muslims who take it to the extreme. And as you know some are so extreme to the point of almost being insane. But the keyword is some, not all. Once, a stranger with a tudung came up to us to pet our puggy and my Malay friends do not mind as well. Count yourselves fortunate as we cannot afford to sit at a non halal joint with our pup just to be carted away by the JAIS people. You are also fortunate as we have to get by the stigma of Muslim dog owners/ dog lovers which means my relatives are not allowed to visit us at home. But our pup makes it worth it.

I tot k.Kemuning has banned dogs? ANyway, I was going thru all the posted msg, and me too am quite frustrated. Very envious of ppl living other countries where they can walk their dogs wherever they want. I used to stay in Spore when i am young and we kept a few silky terriers... we can walk them or bring them wherever we want to... no prob at all. Anyway, this is Malaysia now.

Am so frustrated sometimes that was thinking of getting a nice corner shop which is big enough to set up a mini petshop & a big cafe to serve nice food for both owners & furkids! Mad So, that all ppl like us have a legal place to go instead of seludup-seludup... our kids deserve better than that...

As for the Plan A,B,C..... whichever plan me too fully support... if you do need any help, i will be most willing to help...!

Re: [gladyslcp] highland vacation for pets

After reading this long and tireless thread, I have discovered a few consistent trends in dog ownership issues in Malaysia. And I also have some comments to them.

1) Myth: Malaysia is a Muslim country and therefore dog owners are discriminated against.

B*llocks. I'm currently relocated to Shanghai. You'd think in China, land of dog lovers (both beside & inside a human), it will be easy to raise dogs here. It is not. In fact, the only more difficult place will be in Siberia, where probably not much lives.

Due to irresponsible ownership, the city has passed a law banning all dogs from public areas. This ban includes the road, which means it is impossible to let your dog out of your house legally. And to further deter dog owners, license within the city circle is RMB2k per year (RM1K) and outside the city RMB1k. Compare this with the puny RM10 we pay back home.

So, does the country REALLY want to discriminate? If they do, they'd simply pass a law to ban dogs altogther.

2) Myth: Muslims treat our dogs like lepers.

Rubbish. I have multiple eye-witnesses who will say otherwise.

I have a large breed dog and I have to frequently find new sensory experiences for him to aid in his socialisation. And I stupidly thought it was safe to take him to Pet Safari at Ikano Power Centre. I took him there on two seperate occasions, the second time to prove my first experience wrong but I was deeply dissapointed.

From the moment I exit the lift till the time I return to the car park, all I get are screams, jeers and taunts from men, women, children and the elderly. I own a labrador, not a rottie mind you. And might I also add that only the CHINESE were the only people doing this to us. The were terrified of my labrador but at the same time chose to stand close by and poke and jeer at us. In fact, Muslim shopper quietly and politely scooted away, which is the RIGHT thing to do if you are afraid. The situation was no different in Pet Safari. By then, I had learnt that I had to scream at people so they will understand that they should get out of the way if they fear my dog.

And to further dirty the 'foreign country so nice to dogs' image, I will let you know that by owning a dog in China, you face harrassment from your neighbours daily. People will often complain your dog has bitten them and you will need to pay their medical bills or face prosecution when they report it. You will never win, even if they have no proof.

And really at the end of this all, it all boils down to the fact many Malaysian dog owners are not showing enough responsible onwership to convince anyone to be nice to us. We have to start with 'scooping the poop' and leashing dogs in public areas. I've had comments from people about poo scooping, they say things like "Oh you think we're in France issit?". You have a kid, you scoop his poop, you have a dog, you do the same.

Lastly, we have to stop being childish and putting the blame on the country's official religion. It's time to stop pointing the finger at the word Muslim. We are responsible for the make or break of dog friendly environments and attitudes.

Pardon the rant.

Re: [bunnyears] highland vacation for pets

What bunnyears said do make some sense ya know. Most of us with dogs shud indeed change their attitude and u do not expect ppl to change becoz of us. Scooping poo is the 1st step. Next, make sure your dogs do not roam freely outside the compound alone. 3rdly, make sure there would be no dog smell in or outside ur house that ur neighbours had to complain to u. Lastly, always pay respect to others especially our Muslim brothers and sisters. Some non-Muslims would find dogs aggressive no matter how cute they are. Muslims fear of dogs due to their believes. I guessed it is not advisable to bring your dog at shopping complexes such as Ikano unless they hv a private section for dog owners to walk their dogs etc. This is not like the foreign country whereby we can take our dogs to anywhere we want. Furthermore, with the latest incident whereby a boy had been attacked by 4 dogs, this already created a public alert on dogs.

I wud suggest to all dog owners to lie low at this point and see how the preceedings go since the victim's father decided to take legal action against the owner....

Re: [lisachew] highland vacation for pets

Hello Lisa, and Hello to Everyone :)

I am new here and I found your question very interesting, thus I sign up with the website.

Actually, I went Genting Highlands the past three weeks and guess what I stumble upon? I was at First World Hotel, around the "shopping" area and so happen I was standing right outside Vincci & Padini shop. I saw this sign and immediately took a photo of it as I was Over-Joyed to actually see that sign.

http://www.facebook.com/...31b&id=755404216

If you can't see that link, Its actually a sign posted right outside Vincci & Padini shop (at Genting Highlands First World Hotel) that says "Food, Smoking and Taking pictures NOT Allowed. BUT, Dogs & Cats (Pets) ALLOWED"

Also to add, First World has a Spa, if not mistaken its called Chilli Spa or somewhat. I brought my puppy there somewhere last year (i think) I went there with my Family and before we paid for the spa treatment, my dad said he will not pay for the spa treatment unless they allow my dog in. Indeed, they want the business, so they allowed. Haha! But of course my Puppy is well trained, she don't make a mess, just sticks to me and was freezing because of the weather.

And I smuggled my puppy into Awana Hotel once :p Hehe!

That is all~

Re: [kaerb] highland vacation for pets

Hi Kaerb,

I really like what you said "how can Malaysia hope to be a world class tourist attraction or achieve international recognition, if it can't be tolerant to dogs???"

The recent news in The Star is a good example

http://thestar.com.my/...3&sec=parliament

Actually, as a Malaysian Citizen, growing up in Malaysia has opened my eyes to see alot of "things" which we are not allowed to voice out. The government is run mostly by Malays only, Authories and Powers is up to the Malays. I don't see how Multi-Racial when everything is Muslims, Malays and Mosques.

I feel treated very unfairly as a Chinese, and I believe the Indians and other races feels it too. We pay taxes to build their Mosques and whatnot, like Putrajaya is a good example, sending a guy to the Space for nothing and special rights/discounts for Bumiputras ONLY.

Its like, Malays can double or triple park every friday and cause a massive jam outside mosques or on the road during their Friday prayers but us as as a different race, during our festive season we are their prey for "ang pow" money or prey to issue summone for playing with Fireworks.

All in all, the only person that I believe has ever make a stand is Raja Petra. Frown
