Hi ... Your question: " ... if i lock my dog in a cage while i'm studying at school ... around 6-7 hours ... is it ok? ..." I will assume that you will be getting a pup (say about 8 weeks old) ... BASIC FACTS Before answering your question ... there are some basic facts that you should know and MUST accept about a 8week pup or young dog: (A) Young pups will pee & poop 10 to 20 times a day (at least, if not more) ... This is because their systems are not fully developed and they cannot hold their elimination ... And a pup's ability to hold will only be fully developed at say 6 to 10 months (depending on the breed & individual dog). (B) Young pups/dogs require between 3 to 4 meals a day depending on breed. size & age. At 6 months most pups will be able to manage on 2 meals a day. (C) ALL pups & young dogs start with a very STRONG INSTINCT - NOT TO pee or poop where they eat, play, rest & sleep ... Now, this instinct is very useful & important ... If you follow this instinct it is VERY EASY to housetrain a dog ... BUT, if you create an environment that forces the dog to go AGAINST this instinct - then, you may be asking for trouble - and you will make it very very difficult to housetrain your dog ... I estimate that about 50% of the posts in this Forum complaining about difficulty in housetraining - arise because the owners do not understand this instinct & actually "cause" their pups/dogs to go against the instinct - thus, creating housetraining problems for themselves! KEEPING A PUP CRATED FOR LONG HOURS So ... to answer your question - it is not about toys or chews or keeping your dog entertained while in the crate/cage ... If you keep your pup in a crate/cage for 6 to 7 hours at a stretch ... what you are going to do is this ... You will be FORCING your dog to do the following: First, you will force your young pup to try hold its pee & poop, causing it to strain its undeveloped urinary & elimination systems - systems that are not strong enough to hold elimination. Second, no matter how hard a pup tries to hold - it will be physically impossible for the pup to hold - and then you will force the pup to eliminate INSIDE the crate/cage, where it eats, rests, plays, sleeps and possibly where it eats. Third, by doing above - you will DESTROY your dog's basic instinct & need to eliminate AWAY from the place it eats, plays, rests & sleeps. When the above happens ... what are the possible problems you create? 1st Possible Problem: By forcing a pup to hold elimination before it is ready - you may strain & weaken its urinary & elimination systems - which may only show up when the dog is older ... 2nd Possible Problem: You may end up with a dog that eats its poop ... Being crated/caged for such long hours - it is likely your pup will start tasting its poop - and you will have a very difficult habit to get rid off. 3rd Possible Problem: You will likely end up with a dog that pees & poops anywhere ... including - inside its crate ... on its bedding, its cushions ... inside the house ... on furniture ... in the car ... etc ... SUGGESTIONS: (A) Ideally - if you crated or cage your pup - you must arrange to let the pup out every hour or so ... to pee & poop ... Especially after every meal ... when the pup gets up from sleep ... etc As the pup gets older - the intervals between elimination can be longer. (B) Alternatively, DO NOT CRATE OR CAGE - but use a playpen instead ... arrange & make the playpen large enough (layer the playpen with newspaper) such that there is enough space for your pup to go to another corner of the playpen to eliminate ... And have someone pick up the soiled newspaper regularly. Cheers PS - Please go and get a good dog training manual and a good puppy book - read and then you will know what you need to do to get ready for your pup.
