I am new to the forum, although have been lurking around. I have not formerly introduced myself because I do not have a puppy yet.
I am interested in Golden Retriever.
I saw a liter of GD puppies; there are two male puppies among that I intended to select from. All puppies I have seen so far are creamy whitish in color.
One of the puppies is brownish/gold color. This puppy stands out among the others. A brown puppy.
The second puppy is creamy but bigger size with square jaw and bigger bone than the rest. While playing with both it seem that this creamy one is more dominant, maybe because of size. He also barks at me a few times.
I couldn’t decide because while the brown color definitely fit my imagination of a golden Retriever, the creamy one is very dominant.
Will these creamy white puppies change color, as they grow older to darker brown? Someone say look at the ear and tails- that what it color will be?????
What should be the selection criteria?
Sorry, if the questions seem elementary, will some one help. First time puppy buyer who is afraid to make a mistake.
From, Tan, (would be puppy owner.)

sbt,
While selecting for the best physical looking puppies dont forget to look at the nerve n temprement part which makes a whole dog. The dog must be stable and not jittery to sudden noises in a strange environment then u will have a better family dog which should do well in training.

Aiyo, I am still finding my way around this site. How to put out avatar? Latter lah!
Dear All,
I am also in GR. I don't have a it yet but I am hunting for it. May I ask, for a GR, is RM 1700 a bit pricey ? I mean most of the owner reported here that they get their GR with Cert is around RM1300 to RM 1500.

I just fell in love with this puppy and decided for it. I bargained down fro $2,000
I learned that buying from a breeder is more expensive than from Pet shop.. Some Pet shop even selling GR at $1,200 only if you bargain hard enough.
As for newbie like me, I wouldn’t know the different between the two. I wouldn’t say that my purchase is better than the pet shop. Every one also claimed that their breed is superior. I am sure breeder/.importer also sell puppies to pet shops as well.
Unless you are the Top Champion Breeder like one guy (Mr. Gan) in this forum, I see no justification on the high price for the normal importer/breeder. Maybe Mr Gan will be able to enlighten us more.
I wish you the best in your hunt, and do share with us when you have got your puppy.

Dear SBT,
Thanks for the reply.
Actually, I will be only moving into my new house D/S with compound in Sep. So, I think I need to start doing homework and survey now. Like lots of the poster said, adopting a dog is like having a baby, if you are not ready, don't have it. If you want to have it, then you have to FULLY committed.
Sure I will be sharing my hunting with all of you here, I like this forums. It is filled with dog-lovers, and I am one too

Hi tan
I have a golden retriever. It's name is Ozzie. It's creamish (white at the bottom, top almost brown).
Is colour that important? it it is, it really is a matter of preference. and yes, even if it's creamy as a pup, it may turn out brown.
Best to check out the colours of its parents and grandparents. Ozzie's parents and grandparents are creamish-gold.
Things to look out for:
- large breed dogs, esp labrador and g retriever are susceptible to hip/bone problems. This may be due to growing to fast before their bones can catch up (difficult for bone to support large frame). Hence, may i suggest looking out for a puppy that's not pudgy (as it is easier to fatten them up than to have them lose weight).
Also, check the teeth first. Teeth that are not healthy could lead to a lot of problems.
Also the eyes. And genitals. if you intend to breed your dogs, don't end up getting a dog (if male) with one testical. check it's breathing and bone structure (vertebrae and hip bones - while checking, be very gentle).
G retrievers are very intelligent. best to buy about 8-10 weeks. best time to start training them. hope this helps. cheers

You are right; color is a matter of choice. In pure breed the color of the puppy is a fair indication of its color when s/he grow up. Both Thunder parents golden brown in color.
Thanks for the pointers too. You seem to be very knowledgeable.

Hello SBT,
Seen your GR's pics in the webbie and seems you ended up having both golden and cream colour uh?
From my point of view, choosing a colour all depends on the individual. Some like it golden while the rest like it creamy. But, what is this breed all about when you called it GOLDEN retriever?
As a GR breeder, I would say a golden coloured GR looks nicer compares to the creamy ones, and worth more too. The colour of the coat will initially change when the puppy change it's coat to their adult coat. The best I would say is try to get a look at the parents' then I am sure you'll have the idea of how your puppy will grow up to be! ;)
As for the bone structure and growth of your puppy, I would say that it depends on the size of the parents as well. However, we should not only put this in consideration. While puppy are at their growing stage, it is the best for the owner to provide enough food and nutrients to mae them strong and grow accordingly. I've seen some people who underfeed their puppy, resulting them to look skinny and unhealthy. Just make sure they get enough food and enough care. and everything shall be alrite!
Golden Retrievers & Miniature Schnauzer are SIMPLY the BEST!!!!!!!
