I want to train my Golden to be a therapy dog, but how and where? Can't Post

FrownMy Golden which you can see in the picture display, is only 10mth. She's now in pre-novice and is going to sit for her exam next week. I was thinking maybe after this or after Novice(if she passes), I want to train her to be a therapy dog.Frown

FrownThe reason for this is becoz, she is not suited to do Obedience Training. She's not the competition type of dog. She's not the speed type & she also has HD. She doesn't really enjoy it nowadays coz it's too strict, too harsh and too boring for her(like bootcamp). She'll prob enjoy doing softer things like walking calmly beside patients, making them feel happy(she LOVES people, including burglers too!) Do simple commands...You know what I mean?Frown

FrownAnyway, I just wana know how old can we start training her to do this thing? I'm also not sure how to train her to do stuff like this...and where can I train her? Any info or suggestions? Thanks!Frown

Giving care is like a 'Boomerang'

When you give it out freely, it always comes back to you

Remember that...

Re: [amber_mae] I want to train my Golden to be a therapy dog, but how and where? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Amber Mae, Therapy dogs are mainly a question of temperament and upbringing (puppy socialising). The training is secondary when selecting for this type of dogs. It's never too late, but I'm not sure if they are age requirements for younger dogs. One of the larger organisations in Australia, with email contact and basic intro is www.therapydogs.org.au/?id=faq_training Anyway, good luck in M'sia. Regards Jasen
