My dog is menstruating

Can't Post

Dear all, Hi! Can't find a suitable category to post this subject. My dog is menstruating!! At first I just noticed droplets of blood trails around the house. I thought Toby had injured itself but I couldn't find any obvious external wounds. Finally after a more detailed examination, I noticed blood stains on her genitalia. I read that dogs will clean up their own menstrual blood i.e. by licking the area but why is my dog still dripping blood everywhere? She occasionally licks herself but it's not enough. Surely, I can't let Toby into the house like this. It's got to stay outside. Cleaning up is hard -- the blood stains are tough to come off the concrete. Actually, this is her second period. Dogs come into heat twice a year, right? The first time, it lasted about a week. I didn't think it was her period then because she was only 1 1/2 years old. I thought she had some concealed wound which I couldn't find. Now, I am convinced that she is menstruating. If I got her spayed, will she menstruate any longer? I am not spaying her yet but I keep her well within the confines of the house. Spaying means hysterectomy, right? Or is it tubal ligation? If I get my anatomy right, she should stop menstruating after hysterectomy but not tubal ligation, shouldn't she? Well, I hope I don't have to get Toby a hysterectomy just to curb the menstruating problem. It's like killing a mosquito with a nuclear bomb. I hope she learns how to clean up after herself after the next couple of menstrual periods. Regards, yckuan
