Hi...
If you are fedding your dog BARF, you dun have to deal with this. Only kibbles fed dogs will have this problem. Sometimes you'll notice that your dog will scout on the floor trying to empty its anal gland. For more information, you could refer to this website http://www.barkbytes.com/medical/med0029.htm.
Oh....becareful with the liquid....it's very smelly .

Hi...
Vets and groomers are good in it but just becareful if you are attempting to do it yourself. I'm sure you wouldn't want people complaining about your stinking hand .

Sorry, I've never do it before. Can't really tell you the time frame. Just look for the sign i.e. scouting on the rear end or licking the region around the anal glands.

When you see your dog biting their butt or turning round is the sign their anal gland need to be empty.
You need to use your thumb and 1st finger put around their butt (A**hole) hahahaand you can feel there is something there and just squeece it lor. 1st try cannot then second times. After squeece out the liquid you can just use water to clean their butt.

Oh...probably I've made myself unclear here. Let me explain again.
All dogs and cats have anal glands and used the pungent smelling anal gland secretion to mark their territories. They are naturally expressed when your dog passes a motion or when they become excited or frightened (my dog did that at the vet clinic once ). There is some muscle around the gland which contracts and empties it.
When the anal glands fail to empty normally, the result can be impaction. Among the causes are opening of the duct become blocked due to loose stools or stools decreased in volume and the gland is not expressed naturally during defecation as well as overactive anal glands. Sometimes impaction leads to an inflammatory condition in the anal sac.
Dogs on BARF diet will produce firm stool which are essential for normal anal sac emptying. You could ask around and I'm sure those people feeding BARF will never have anal glands problem with their dogs .
Cheers !!

Hi....
Kibble fed dogs produce firm stool too but not as firm as dogs on BARF diet. Guess not all kibbles fed dogs has anal gland problem but mine was not so lucky. I've to send them to the vet or groomer for empting the gland but since BARFing them I no longer have to do that. Maybe I'm not feeding them first class kibbles like Canidae that's y they have this problem .
Cheers !!
