AVATAR

Due to the tight working schedule , I have decide to allow uploading of AVATAR by members. Please ensure that the AVATAR that will be uploaded must meet the following guidelines :-

Please use only your dog picture as AVATAR. We cannot accept anything else such as Cartoon or even cat picture. We want to maintained it at Dog only site.

To add AVATAR, just go to edit profile and browse to upload your AVATAR. Please reduce the size of your pic to about 120 x 120 before uploading.

Those who fail to meet the above guidelines will have their membership suspended or disabled.

Hi there guys n gals,

actually IMHO there's nuthing much to worry about, simple conform to the guidelines Mr. Khoo has set and all will be fine.

the guideline states that images must b approx. 120 pixels (width) by 120 pixels (height). simply use any image manipulation software to do the job. U could resize the entire image if that's what u choose or u could crop the particular region that u wanna display, then resize.

Tip: During cropping or resizing pls ensure ur image's mode is set to RGB, this would enable better image quality.

Image Manipulation Software(s);

Adobe Photoshop (shareware)
GIMP (freeware)

I use GIMP Version 1.2.4 since it's free.

Here's a simple walktrough with GIMP.

Click on the GIMP icon, the GIMP toolbox will appear
Open Image by selecting from the toolbox's menu "File > Open"
Change image mode to RGB, right click on the image "Image > Mode > RGB"
Decision to crop or not to crop

Crop region

From the tool box (with icons) select the icon which is situated, second row, 4th icon from the left [Crop or resize the image]
Select the image, hold down the left mouse button and drag. While dragging, a popup dialog box will appear. When u r done selecting the region u wish to crop, hit the "crop" button from the popup dialog box
You're done cropping the image

Desire entire image

No actions required

Resize the Image by right clicking on the image, "Image > Scale Image". Alter the "New width" textbox to 120px. The Height will automatically change by the correct ratio
Save file by right clicking on the image, "File > Save As"
U'r done

hi , i was just curious, after uploading my avatar, i still can't see my avatar... and when i go back to my edit profile and check on my avatar icon, the thing goes back to none icon and i have to browse again to get the pic... i have try this for a few time, but i still can't get the avatar .. do you know what's the problem ? do you know it took ohw long to upload the avatar ???? Thanks Archer for the information posted.

As long as you get your AVATAR to a size close to 120 pixels x 120 pixels, the quality of pic will be good. If you try to upload a big picture without reducing the size, then it will take up unnecessary bandwidth which is not good.

hi there,

If u noticed, I've just changed my avatar. It worked without a glitch on my side.

yumiko, I assume that u have rezied ur image to the required specifications.

Pls ensure ur image in in the format of either JPEG/JPG, GIF or PNG. Web browsers natively support these 3 formats. If you were to upload a BMP image, only WINDOWS users will be able to see ur avatar. Any other image formats are not / not widely supported by browsers.

If u have gotten your image format correct, try using another browser (again I assume u r using MS Internet Explorer) or upgrade ur MS IE if it is not the latest. I'm not saying that there maybe some faults in the browser u r using, but there's a possibility.

our webmaster has made a very good point which is both factual and practical.

here's a scenario;

Image01 is at resolution 120px by 120px and the file size is 3KB

Image02 is at resolution 800px by 600px and the files size is 150KB

The avatar module is probably set to display images around 120px by 120x or if it's any larger it will do a compression in resolution, not file size. This would mean that although Image02 when viewed from the forum is at 120px by 120px, it is actually 800px by 600px being compressed. This would mean that the page would have to download 150KB of data to view an Image that when resized correctly would only be 3KB. Those on dialups will cry ...

28KB? The one that I'm using now it 4KB. However the file size depends on many factors. May we know wat format did u save it in? JPG, GIF, PNG? Could u try saving in all 3 formats and choosing the smallest in terms of file size? I am pretty sure tat the image quality between the 3 formats doesn't differ much in this instance.

If everyone can keep the file size of their AVATAR as low as less than 10KB, then there will be substancial saving of the bandwidth consumption of this web site in the long run. Nevertheless, the size of 28KB is small enough when compared to others. Well done.

The forum has been designed not to accepted animated GIF File as we feel that animated gif file with multiple image frame will take more bandwidth and at the same time it can be quite distracting when we read forum post.

I think I'm having some problems here. I'm trying to get all my doggies pic up... Whenever I combine 4 pics, there's no problem.

But whenever I put in 5 pics, the pic will not appear ... Although the size of the pic is still in the requirement. 120 x 120.

So now very kesian ... cos the only pic that I insert and can't appear is Labbie's pic. Without Labbie, the pic is ok. Why like that,ah?

I am not sure what gone wrong. I just register a new username, validate, login and edit profile and I am able to upload avatar without problem. Is your avatar less than 65KB ?

You can see as above I am able to upload the avatar like anyone of you. However, I have set a limit of 65KB for uploading of avatar and if you file is too big, please reduce it before attempt to upload.

In the afternoon, I used a mac computer. I thought something was wrong. But now, I am using a Win PC, also same message?

I had the same problem with JPG file...change your file to BMP format and resize them to 43kb or less and it'll work Smile

i used to have the same problem too.

So now, i can't use jpeg anymore.. but have to use bitmap but not too big.. which is quite difficult to compress.

i was trying to upload a new avatar following ur instruction but was unable to do so..it...permission denied..something like Doodle but i have checked n i'm very sure that it's nothing wrong with the size, it's 12 x 12 Frown

my avatar is just fine with either jpg or bmp.

How do I see the AVATAR after I hv uploaded the picture. Sometimes in the forums where I reply to a question / issue and then when I see my reply in the listing, I don't see the picture.

Sorry to disturb you all on this small matter.

I have posted the same question in the forum help and others but later on I found the same topic : Avatar in the announcement forum. Believe this is the right forum that I should post and I have re-posted it again here and hope that someone could help me to solve this problem:

I had successfully uploaded a new avatar and I did see the new avatar appeared nicely in the forum yesterday.

But this morning when I log in and I saw the old avatar again but not the new one that I have uploaded yesterday. Crazy

I have attempted to disable the old avatar and re-upload again but I still see the old avatar appears in the posting.

May I know why and how to overcome this problem? Anyone can help??? Getting upset as not able to upload my doggies newest picture. Appreciate help..... Unsure

Hi Archer,

Photoshop is good but not necessary for most people. I use Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements, IrfanView and also Microsoft PhotoEditor.

IrfanView is one of the best FREE photo software. No ads, no spyware, no nag screen. Just type irfanview in google search or go to

www.irfanview.com/

Microsoft PhotoEditor is free with MS Office

All will allow you to crop (cut out unwanted portions of pic) and resize and best of all, allow for different jpeg compression (or quality) setings. Both IrfanView and PhotoEditor load lightning fast whereas Photoshop will take a while and it is very EXPENSIVE . Photoshop Elements is bundled free with some digital cameras.

I use Photoshop CS for reworking the really difficult shots and PhotoEditor for simple cropping and resizing without any fancy manipulation.

For people not using Windows XP, IrfanView allows you to view your pic collection as a one after another manually or as a timed slideshow. Also, if your pix were taken with a digital camera, your saved copy will retain the EXIF information.

Some digital cameras have got very inflexible file naming systems. IrfanView aloows you to batch rename which means you do not have to rename your pix onbe by one.

I have tried and successfully upload the new avatar but I still c the old avatar appeared. I also attempted to diasable old avatar and re-upload the latest one again but still failed.

Others are seeing my new avatar but not myself. Why is that so? Please help. I hv tried so many times and waited so long for the new avatar to b posted up but still upsetting. Frown

I would suggest that you upload your pic as avatar instead of signature. The present setting do not have Marked Up Image Tag enable for signature and therefore you can't do that.
