Breeder help and vet for Golden Retriever Can't Post

Hi,

I'm planning to buy a puppy GR (the very golden type..oh so cute!!!) and been doing a lot of research such as where to let my puppy sleep, housebreaking tips, house-safe, etc.

Can anybody tell me where to find a well recommended breeder ? I meant I saw some of GR's owner post beautiful Blush picture of goldie and I'm in mix reaction as I don't know where to start looking for a puppy. I have a few breeders name from MKA but haven't visited them as the breeder stay in Cheras while I'm from Klang. I think it will be very tiring for the puppy if i'm to bought him home in such a long journey. Anyway, willing to buy from any pet shop if the price is right but they r more expensive usually.

Plus, where to find a good pet supply shop which sells everything under oneroof and good knowledge of dog breed so that they know what goldie needs (especially to buy crates, pooper scooper) and also a good Vet Clinic as I believe I will make a lot of visit to the vet.

I'm willing to travel to Subang, Sunway or PJ just to buy my puppy essential accessories item. But the vet must be near as in Klang.

I plan to buy the puppy during hari raya so that I can spend a few days with the puppy.

Help !!!!Pirate

hie,

am sure you're feeling sooo excited now about adding a GR to your family...btw, u planning to get a boy or a girl :> ?

for the breeders contacts, can't help u much there :/ most important is to seek for reputable ones to make sure you get a healthy puppy. perhaps you could ask the breeders at dog shows? i think that's one of the best method. but it might cost u a bit :o

as for the supplies, i think the petshop in Seapark is kinda good. owner experienced, everything under one roof. could stop by there to take a peep.

good luck in seeking for the best puppy!

Re: [amy] Breeder help and vet for Golden Retriever [In reply to] Can't Post

Wink Hi Amy,

We are not suppose to advertise here so I am just going to give you some pointers of where to find a reputable breeder.

First stop, avoid the infamous Petaling Street, KL. This boy here under my user name, was from there and he died due to DISTEMPER. This pup came from Sg. Siput. Very dark golden and good structure even as a 2 months old pup.

Secondly, avoid any breeder from Kepong. There's a posting here under the user name DogLuver. He/she had another bad experience too. You can search for his/her posting under that User Name.

GR are quite famous and well sought after. Therefore, the there are many breeders breeding for the sake of $$$$$$$$!

The reasonable price at the moment ranges between RM800 to RM1500. I won't be too keen of puppies between RM800 sometimes as low as RM500. You have to be extra careful about the lineage and quality. You wouldn't wanna buy a pup that looks like a Golden and grows up to be a mongrel mixed. So far, I have 2 friends with such experience. It's a total rip off!

Another thing to look out for is whether there are any inbreedings (mother and son, sister and brother). As far as I know, there are some breeders in Cheras doing some inbreeding. The lineage may look impressive as they might be champions. What is the use of using a Champion Stud on its sister or daughter. Only good breeders know the consequences of inbreeding and the strength of doing so. Better watch out for these problems.

The bottomline is, try to avoid petshop but there are some reputable petshops that I know of, you can email me at @yahoo.com for more details. I would be glad to help you out.....

Sorry cannot disclose too much as not allowed to advertise!

Regards,

TimChan

Re: [timchan] Breeder help and vet for Golden Retriever [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks all of u.Wink

I prefer a male GR, golden or creamy. Oh I don't know whether it's too rush...one month to go mah...I really scare the puppy will be sad when no one's home. Rite now my sister is staying at home..so she can jaga..but later she will find a job and need to go to work. My parents and me r also working from 8am-6pm. So i think Raya is the better time to bring home a puppy since I'm having 9 days leave.

I'm now very actively searching for a breeder. I'm going to visit one at Kota Kemuning afterwards. Asking price about RM1700-1800. Claim that the puppy parents - father imported, mother local but from champion bloodline.

Beside that I'm going to visit a petshop in Subang and Sunway.

I've also prepare some questions to ask the breeder/petshop. Do you ask the breeder/petshop for proof of genetic tests/hip/elbows x-rays ?

Shawnlim and Hunter, I see your GR r creamy in color. Very beautiful.

Best Regards to y'alll

Amy

Re: [amy] Breeder help and vet for Golden Retriever [In reply to] Can't Post

hello,

Welcome to the forum.Smile

IMHO, timchan gave very good advise and i support it.

Another thing that i should stress, is please please do not get a puppy from a petshop.. Have u seen the condition in which the puppies are kept? at the back? NOT the cage you see on display. I have..and the smell and condition is terrible. The healthy and sick puppies are kept next to each other..and so far..that's the case for all the petshops i've been to. You know Pets W*nderl*nd? Looks nice doesn't it? At the back, where the pups not on display are kept, it's not. I hv a friend who worked there before and she told me the condition.

"I've also prepare some questions to ask the breeder/petshop. Do you ask the breeder/petshop for proof of genetic tests/hip/elbows x-rays ? "

Honestly, here in Malaysia, barely any breeders do x-rays on dogs. I guess we're not that advance. I think we do hv that facility here...just that not many(barely) ppl x-ray their dogs unless they see signs of HD/joint/bone problems. No harm asking though.

Re: [amy] Breeder help and vet for Golden Retriever [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Amy,

One important point is NOT TO BE TOO RUSH. Never be too rush or impulsive when choosing a puppy. There are many Golden Breeders at this very moment and you have many choices. Keep your options open and be extra careful. Well, questions or not, they are not too important. The best is to see things for yourself. Sometimes, if people want to be dishonest, they can pose a very good impression or outlook just to get you to buy their pup.

RM1700 - 1800 is not too bad but check out the blood line. Just ensure that you list down all the objectives and reasons of getting a pup. If you want to be in the show ring, then you might consider getting a pup with higher quality. If for a pet or companion, you may consider pet quality specimen. Both make good companions.

About the X-Ray for Hip. I agree with our friend above...We do have the facilities but I personally believe that if there is no visible signs that there are hip problems, the dog should not be put under the general anesthetic unneccessarily for the x-ray to be done. Sometimes, there are other factors to hip problems for example the weight of the dog and also too much exposure to slippery floor. I guess all dog owners love their pet so much that they would not be ready for a "devastating" news. But I know most people will not agree with that. You should not be too worry as long as you take a look at both the parents' certs and preferably have a look at both the parents. If you see weak back legs on the either the parents, most of the pups may inherit the same problem. So in actual fact, getting a pup is always a risk. Puppy will not show signs of hip problem until they are at least 6 months old unless exceptional severe cases could be seen much earlier. There are breeders that x-ray their dogs but they may mark up the price of the puppies to cover the cost. You may be surprise there may be breeders selling their Golden with ceiling high prices. I heard of some selling for as high as RM5000. So it all boils down to what is the reason you're getting the dog for. Some may claim that their pups are guaranteed to be Champion in the show ring. Come on! All Tom, Dick and Harry knows that in this world, nothing is guaranteed except LIFE and DEATH. So you better watch out for self-proclaimed Golden Retriever "Experts" or "Specialists".

Take your time, my opinion is that there will always be puppies available. You will only have 1 shot and chance to spend that amount of money. So spend it wisely. Set the right target and shot straight to the bull's eye. So rushing to get one is not a good factor. Try avoiding all sources mentioned above and you will be on the right track.

It is best that you take time to learn about all these. If we tell you everything, it won't be fun to discover things for yourself right??!!

Hope me gave some good pointers to you. They may sound scary but I always believe that it is better to be SAFE than SORRY.....

really, really good pointers you've given. it is indeed important not to rush in choosing a puppy. last time i bought my GR, it was a wild experience. i have no idea what breed i'm looking for even. just went around all pet shops in KL within half day and chose the one that looked the nicest from a pet shop near my house (even went to the petaling street one, but no puppies caught my eye. phew!). a dangerous experience :/

PS :sorry to hear about your pup last time, so do you own another GR now?

Re: [hunter] Breeder help and vet for Golden Retriever [In reply to] Can't Post

yea...according to a friend...while she was working there, she was even worried that she would carry diseases and infect her dogs at home =/

the smell is horrible....really. Can choke on the ammonia emitted from the urine.

Some pet shops which offer boarding services..(some..not all)...the places where the pets are kept...smells too.Simply horrible.

I guess those ppl don't know..and well, they see that pet shop looking real clean/"professional"...they expect the puppies' health to be like that too.

Hello again,

Can I ask you guys/gals some questions....

Anyone of you working and no one at home to jaga your dog ?

Let's say, we work 8-6pm (10hrs at work plus travelling time = 12hrs)...how do you feed your dog if your dog is a puppy lah....must feed 3 times a day rite. Can feed twice in a day rite ?

While we r working for 12hrs...the dog must be bored. What activity to give them while we r not at home ? How to make us don't feel so guilty ? After come home from work, spend about 3 hrs with them...then it's sleeping time for the dog and me...sob sob

I'm feeling guilty already eventhough I haven't bought a puppy.Frown
