Help, How to take care of a blind M Schnauzer?	Can't Post

Greetings to all,

I've recently bought a MS and being new to puppies, never knew that we should not get too young a pup. I got her at around 3 to 4 weeks old. Anyway, problem starts when she got sick and now as she's recovered, her eyesight is lost and that may be permanent.

So if any of you that have got experience in having a blind dog, would very much appreciate if you can share a few pointers. I am new to pups although I have had many adult dogs b4. This one is young and is special in a way that she can't see. Would very much like to keep her for long but I believe lots of preparation and work to do which I am prepared to face it.

Hi NickCaren,

Whoa..someone actually sold you a 3-4weeks old MS puppy? Amazing.. No puppy should leave for their new homes any earlier than 8 weeks. Nevertheless, what is done is done. I have no expericence with raising a blind puppy. However, this is what I managed to get from the net. Hopefully it would give some pointers & tips

Yes, we got the pup at 3-4 weeks, actually its part of out mistake as well, we do not know at that time, that we should'nt get puppies that young. I feel people nowadays will wanna sell their pups as young as possible...those irresponsible breeders/pet shops.

Heard from HCYeap that your MS have got you new puppies. Congratulations to you!!! Must be very cute!

Its kind of you to pass me the link...indeed informative and now I know what to do with my Schatzie.

Well, she (MS) is now 2.5 Months and is getting more and more active. We would spend time with her every evening, she enjoys lying on our lap, I guess she felt secured in that way. As she can't see, she's developed some negative temperament and will shout and stretch whenever we bathe her or carry her at times. Other than that, she's all well, has goot apetite and active. We adopted a Border Collie (mix) from Namie in hope that they will be companion but having found that the BC is much bigger than her, we did not put them together at the moment. I thought of having another MS to be her companion and would like to find one but after our experience with such breeders, we are worried we may not get a healthy MS.

Well, the above is some updates on her condition, hopefully I did not get you bored.

Glad to have your reply...would really want to chat with you more often or even meet you in person as I know you are very well versed with MS and it would be an honour to be able to see your MSs too!!! Smile

Hi Dominic,

Thks for the kind words. If we fellow MS owners do not look out for each other, who else would? Crazy

Besides, I salute your brave decision to keep your Schatzie and give her the best home you could. Not everyone would take this road.

Glad that the link proved informative. I learnt a lot from that site as well. As for another companion for Schatzie, take your time to decide. One thing for sure, this experience does hammer home an important point for all doggie owners. Make sure we do our homework first before bringing home a puppy! And when every possible, get direct from the breeder ( the type that lets you see the parents and how they are raised).

I would like to continue this further as there's another forum member who's MS puppy also got eye problem. We would like to look at their parent's lineage. Apprec it if you would drop me a line at schnauzer@puppy.com.my

Do post an update now and then on Schatzie's condition especially if the tips from the website works! Who knows, this will be valuble, useful info in the future.

Arthur,

I should say most dog lovers will be prepared to provide the best for their pets no matter what happens to them. This forum did assist me a lot in answering my questions and provides me with info and tips.

I would say the kind of breeders that yo mentioned are very rare nowadays and Schnauzers are not common as well which leads to even less choice/options to obtain a healthy one. But as you said, we still need to take our time to decide, I fully agree.

Will follow the guide from the website you've provided and slowly train her up. Am very confident that she will have no problem at all, MS are smart. They just need patience and love from us.

Hi Dominic,

I fully agree with you. Schatzie is very fortunate to have you as an owner who is willing to take up the challenge to raise a blind puppy. And yes, MS are very smart. I like the idea of the companion dog wearing a bell collar to guide the blind one.

It didn't strike me till after I read the site that our furkids primary senses are scent, hearing, followed by sight. (As opposed to humans who depend on sight primarily) This does build a good case for Schatzie to adapt quickly to her condition (with your guidance and patience of course!) Smile

Hi Arthur,

The idea of having a companion dog with a bell collar strikes me too! Smile

Will do just that when I am able to afford another MS, maybe in 2 to 4 months time which will be most ideal. Smile

At the moment, I still keep her in her cage and let her out during the evening where we will be with her. Afraid without our full attention, she may wander around and got lost or hurt herself.

Hi Eliza,

Nice of you to write! Yup, will bring her there after all her jabs. She's only done with her first vac, her second vac will only be due next week as she's on medication now. Will bring her to future gatherings too when she's fit for that! Smile

Not too sure about enrolling her for the training though, need to see how will she be in a couple of months time. Initially, I planned to train her myself at home as her training may be a bit different due to her situation. Thanks to Arthur, he gave me a link on guide to blind puppies. Very informative, even suggest what and how to train them. Will be following that closely and see how she takes it, still on the lookout for other sites that provide such info so that I can learn to take care of her properly.

i watched before from a tv programme, i think is ripley's believe a not. they mentioned about a blind dog, he is afraid even to walk and the owner can't look after him for 24 hours + they don't wish to lock him up all day long.

so after they bought a companion, the blind dog starts enjoy his life. he can now walk and run in the garden without knocking on the wall. coz they said that the companion dog lead him to the right path, and the blind dog can follow him by sensing his odour.

you intend to buy the same breed is it?
but actually you can also adopt adult dog from shelter. coz pup is still very playful and doesn't know how to take care of the dog. an adult dog should be more suitable (i think).

Hi Amanda,

Yup, I adopted a Border Collie (mix) from this forum's member as well. She's around 4 months old and my MS is 3 months old. Both female. Problem is, they cannot mix and the BC is of bigger build which makes it tough for the MS to be around. The BC will knock her over very easily. Crazy

So I prefer another MS firstly because I like their looks and secondly, I think they will suit better as far as size is concern and may accept each other better since they are of the same breed. Just that, I don't think MS are ever available for adoption and to buy one is very expensive. I have exhausted all my finance into my MS's medical attention and now having difficulty affording one. Frown

Anyway, your suggestion makes sense and does help just that for my case (as explained above...with the BC) it does not work out and that I cannot afford another try...what happens if I adopted another and found out they cannot befriend each other....I will have too many dogs to support and I hate to put my dog up for adoption. Frown

there is (or was) an adult MS in SPCA Ampang... not sure if he/ she's still there... erm... if u r interested... then let me try to find out and will let u know asap... but need to think about the travelling from kl to pg tho...

the 4 months old border collie is still a puppy, very playful and active. just give her sometime and i think she'll suits your needs.

I respect you and your dog's bravery to face the challenges that lies ahead. I take my hat off to you both. It would be an honour to meet you and your dog in person.
