hi melissa
welll i brought him to the vet when he has ear infection n usually they will give ointment for it...depending on how serious your dog is...as for ritchie's case, it was quite serious....bring her to the vet before it gets worse...dont wait too long or else maggots will appear then susah lor Lots of love to my beloved Ritchieboy who has left us on Jan 11 2004..May god bless him

had a westie before...he was perpectually proned to ear infections. and yes you can smell it even without putting your nose next to him. i was informed by many vets that this ear infection was common with the breed. so were books on westie.
different vets gave different ointment for the ear, they even cleaned him week after week. finally the vet suggested an ear drain.
the ear drain worked. and until now...no smell. takes a couple of hours. and when doggies gets up...he'll be fine...and a bit mabuk since its done under general anesthesia.
and after that its self maintenance after shower time.
