really curious Can't Post

hi everyone! i've got big questions.

i am BTC (like evehock is fond of saying) when it comes to PCs and internet and internet chatting styles/symbols etc etc. i even don't know what LOL is, my younger sis said - laugh out loud, betulkah?

but i really want to know. can some kind soul please kindly enlighten me - what do all these symbols and faces mean ??

green face with mouth openwide?; bulb-an idea?; fire-burningissue/anger?; mug-icewater/cold?;red face-angry/furious/fuming mad?; green thing with spikes-a bomb/handgrenade?; some unidentifiable object (cannot see what it is); stack of paper-notes/information?; exclamation mark-surprise/shock?

and what about the yellow smiley faces with lots of different expressions?

Smile - hopeful? smiling? friendly?

Wink - winking eye - naughty/teasing/tongue-in-cheek?

Frown - sad?

Tongue - ?

Cool - hot sun? acting cool?

Blush - shy? embarrased?

Angelic - treading carefully, like a model with a book on her head?

Crazy - confused?

Mad - mad with anger?

Shocked - surpised?

Laugh - pleased?

Unsure - another type of sadness?

Unimpressed - glum?

Sly - happy?

Pirate - injured/hurt?

please help educate me.tq very much

aruna

You'll have to seek those members who are PC addicts. I am sure you will find the answers.
All I know is but a few such as:
LOL = Laugh out loud.
BTW = By the way.
IMHO = In my humble opinion.
DOM = Dirty Old Man.

Nowadays there are so many shortcuts and abbreviations in communication, that English is more and more difficult to understand, and it is supposed to be an universal language that is understood by all.

However, I still prefer, my type of English that was taught to me some 40/50 years ago. It is simple with sentences well formed.
Jack & Jill went up the hill.
I do, I did, and I have done.

Jack & Jill are proper nouns and they are the subjects. Went is the verb past tense of go, up is a preposition or also can mean adverb and the hill is a common noun and in this particular sentence the object. How's that for grammer and proper construction of a perfect sentence?

Uncle Derrick's English is impressive, lol. Anyway, personally, I use the synbols to show what kind of expression I might be using when I'm typing.

Re: [PyRoMaNiAc] really curious [In reply to] Can't Post

that's precisely the point, tisha.

i am sure these smiley faces help us to put expressions to our posting, which otherwise can be expressionless or worse, misunderstood, because readers do not know us personally and also cannot hear the expression in our voices.

so i really want to learn what these symbols and faces mean.

and yeah, uncle dk has astounded us with his queen's english and his memory of what each word is.

I think if u look carefully when u click at some of the icons here it actually tells u what it means

Cool - cool
Blush - blush
Angelic - angelic (it's not a book, it's the angel ring above the head lol)
Crazy - crazy
Mad - mad
Shocked - shocked
Laugh - laugh
Sly - sly
Pirate - pirate (this one must mean someone punched the pirate in the right eye lol)

Some are not listed but i think by looking at them it shd mean the following :

Smile - Smiling
Wink - Winking
Frown - Sad
Tongue - Joking or being cheeky
Unsure - this one is more like kesian look
Unimpressed - this one is neither happy nor sad...Mr Expressionless

LOL is laugh out loud and LMAO is laughing my ass off instead of typing HaHaHeeHeeHoHoHaHaHeeHeeHoHoHAAHAAHEEEEEEHEEEEEEHOOOOHOOOOHEEEEEEEE Laugh
