Re: [melmel] UPM-DBKL Dogs Experiments [In reply to] Can't Post

Written by TAN SRI LEE LAM THYE:

Amend archaic Animal Act 1953

BEING an animal lover, I have been following closely issues concerning animal welfare, particularly on acts of cruelty to animals.

I applaud the many NGOs and animal welfare activists who have been championing the cause of animal welfare and working hard to draw the Government¡¯s attention to amend the archaic Animal Act 1953 and make it relevant to current needs and challenges.

I fully understand the calls and aspirations by these activists for I myself have several pets in my home which I regard as members of my family.

I wish to associate myself with the numerous calls to the Government to act without further delay and introduce amendments to the Animal Act 1953 (2006 Amendment) to provide for deterrent punishment against those who are involved in acts of animal cruelty and abuses as well as to better enhance animal welfare.

Poor enforcement of an archaic law by the authority concerned is largely responsible for the rise in animal cruelty cases.

Besides seeking urgent amendments to the Act, more can be and should be done to educate the public on animal welfare and pet ownership so that they fully understand their responsibilities and help minimise acts of abuse and cruelty to those animals.

State Governments and local authorities also have an important role to play in animal welfare by providing land to be used as animal sanctuaries where all captured strays will be homed and looked after.

Municipal dog pounds must act to improve the deplorable conditions dogs are kept in. Catching strays must be done humanely and not in a cruel manner.

Animal welfare organisations should continue to pursue animal welfare issues by involving their elected representatives to raise such issues in Parliament.

The authority concerned had several years ago spoken of the need to amend the Animal Act 1953 and other related laws but nothing substantial has been done thus far.

I call on the Veterinary Services Department which is the custodian of animal welfare to brief the minister concerned on the urgent need to monitor animal welfare issues and introduce relevant provisions to minimise acts of animal cruelty and abuse.

The animals that share our planet are a part of us. It is our moral duty to protect them from harm and abuse.

On animal welfare, Mahatma Gandhi once said: ¡°The greatness of a Nation can be seen by the way it treats its animals.¡±

Kuala Lumpur.

A'Famosa under investigation for tiger abuse
Malay Mail May 2010

ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE: Tiger abuse at A' Famosa in Malacca has sparked calls for animal rights

PETALING JAYA: The A' Famosa Resort in Malacca could lose its licence to keep captive wildlife on its premises following allegations of its tiger being abused earlier this year.

A full-blown investigation into the incident, triggered by the amateur video posted on YouTube has now been undertaken by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).

Perhilitan deputy director-general Misliah Mohamad Basir told The Malay Mail: "Our department was alerted about this in February 2010 during the Chinese New Year celebrations.

"The park had a tiger placed at their entrance for tourists and visitors to have photos taken with the animal." It is learnt that Perhilitan had at that time only seen snapshots of the incidents.

Nevertheless, in March, Perhilitan called in all zoo operators nationwide, including A' Famosa ¡ª to brief these establishments about the complaints received from the public and to impose a ban on all animal shows, especially those involving endangered and protected animal species.

During that meeting, Perhilitan also urged all operators to upgrade animal cages. "All 30 operators, except one, attended that meeting," said Misliah.

"A' Famosa Resort, however, claimed they did not get an invitation from us. Since the resort claimed they did not get the notice, we called them in again two weeks later to brief them. During that meeting, we discussed issues, which were specifically raised by the public about A' Famosa."

When asked about guidelines and regulations relevant to management of the zoo, Misliah said: "Taking into account that zoo management is not contained in the current Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Perhilitan only had the authority to grant them a license to keep the animal.

"Although there are regulations governing animal cruelty, park operators are not required to have a veterinarian on call, unlike the new Act, to be tabled next month. "We have amended the Act to address these issues and the new regulations will cover all requirements, including qualifications to handle wildlife.

"In the meantime, we will further investigate these allegations and act according to laws governing the protection of animals," she said. Misliah strongly urged the public to play an important role in this issue. "They can bring similar cases forward to highlight this matter. We have a 24-hour hotline." When asked whether Perhilitan had the authority to close down the park, Misliah said only the local council and State government have the authority to do that.

Malaccan tiger trainer fired

MALACCA: A' Famosa Resort general manager Allan Chee has denied allegations of its captive tiger being abused and further confirmed the assistant trainer, who abused the tiger, as seen on YouTube, had his employment terminated due to unsatisfactory overall performance.

Explaining the incident, he told The Malay Mail: " Tigers are nocturnal creatures and those here are very well fed. As such, they become very lazy and lethargic during mid-morning. So, naturally zoo handlers have to use extra coaxing to move the heavy tiger into position."

In response to allegations the tiger was drugged, Allan said: "There is no evidence the tiger was drugged or abused by its handler." Explaining the animal was a captive-bred tiger and considered very tame and comfortable around humans, he posed: "How can we abuse the animal? It costs around RM30,000 to RM40,000 per tiger. Of course we wouldn't hurt it, let alone drug the animal."

When asked if the resort was willing to let the captive tiger undergo a drug test, Allan responded: "Whoever wants to do so must get permission from us. They can't simply come over to do tests on these animals."

Zoo Negara clarification

PETALING JAYA: It was reported in The Malay Mail on Tuesday that "An enactment regarding the privatisation of Zoo Negara is currently being tabled in the Parliament."

That statement should have read "A bill regarding the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 is currently being tabled in Parliament."

In a Press statement to The Malay Mail yesterday, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said it initiated a study with regard to the management of Zoo Negara and options were being recommended to the cabinet for a decision.

The ministry is preparing the report, which will be sent to the cabinet. Zoo Negara has been managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organisation which is registered under the Registrar of Societies.

As such, the role of government is through the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, whereby it is responsible for regulating the existing Wildlife Protection Act 1972. The ministry had spearheaded efforts to arrest allegations of mismanagement at Zoo Negara, which was highlighted by The Malay Mail last year. The ministry also formed a committee headed by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, following a site inspection of the zoo late last year.

Group: Don¡¯t exploit animals

Star
May 2010

MALACCA: A group of animal lovers plan to gather at a well-known resort in Alor Gajah here on Saturday to create awareness about the abuse of tigers and other wildlife by unscrupulous parties in the country. The group, which created a Facebook page named Stop Animal Abuse A Famosa, had recently put the word out on the Internet urging animal lovers to voice their dissatisfaction over treatment of animals.

Dewgem Yen, one of the four creators of the Facebook page, said they were not targeting the resort over the recent claims of abuse of one of its tigers.
¡°We want to create greater awareness that wild animals should not be exploited for profit.

¡°It is not just about the tigers but the treatment of our wild animals in general,¡± she said, when contacted. The Facebook page had sent out about 1,500 invitations so far with 71 indicating their interest to attend the gathering.

When contacted, A Famosa Resort general manager Allan Chee said they were aware of the gathering.¡°We welcome them to take a tour of our safari to see for themselves how our animals are kept and treated,¡± he said, adding that the move was a sincere gesture to show that their animals were not abused as alleged.

He clarified that the safari had stopped using two of its tigers for photography sessions with patrons since April. ¡°The tiger that appeared in the Feb 18 video on YouTube was used only to usher in the Tiger Year during Chinese New Year festivities here.

¡°We stopped doing it after being advised by the Wildlife Department officers who carried out a spot check here,¡± he said. He added the resort only became aware of the issue on May 19 when it received ten emails complaining of animal abuse.

Meanwhile, Malacca Society Against the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) president Vincent Low lauded the move by the wildlife authorities to advise the resort to stop its tiger photography sessions. He also urged the resort to ensure that their animal handlers were professionally trained.

The 500ha resort recently became embroiled in controversy when a YouTube video titled Tiger Being Abused For Money surfaced in February depicting what seemed to be a drugged tiger being forced to pose for photographs.

Department stops animal shows at resort

NST May 2010

ALOR GAJAH: The Wildlife and National Parks Department has issued a directive to a popular resort here to cease animal shows following allegations of abuse of the animals which were posted on the Internet and video recorded on YouTube.

State director Abdul Rahim Othman said department officials had met with the management of A'Famosa Resort last month to discuss and resolve the matter.

He said the allegations of abuse, especially of the tigers which are categorised as endangered, had given a bad impression of the resort and the practice had to be stopped before it got out of hand.

"The public has a negative perception of the issue as a result of the allegations and comments on YouTube and various websites. "The management understood the gravity of the problem and had complied with the directive," he said yesterday.

Rahim said recent checks by the department showed there were no animal shows or photography sessions involving tigers, adding that if visitors came across such abuse they should immediately alert the department.

The alleged abuse of a tiger during a show at the resort was highlighted by a New Straits Times reader in the Letters section on Monday. Anisa Nishat Mohamed Ismail claimed she had watched a video of a tiger that appeared drugged "or so tired it could not even hold its head upright".

She said it was a horrifying spectacle and showed the staff's total disregard for the majestic animal and was a slap in the face for Malaysia's conservation efforts. A'Famosa, however, denied the reports of abuse of the tiger, or any others animals under its care.

General manager Allan Chee said contrary to the claims, the tiger, recorded on You-Tube, was not drugged, but captive-bred and was very tame and comfortable around humans.

"The tiger is healthy and fine. It was not drugged during the photography session. "Tigers are nocturnal, and those kept here are well fed and are lazy and lethargic during the mid-morning," he said.

To prove that the resort also participates in conservation efforts, it is inviting animal lovers and observers to see the condition and state of the animals at the resort.

"We are inviting animal lovers and conservation groups to participate in our 'Free & Easy Tour of the Animal World Safari'. "See for yourselves the operation of our park, as well as the condition and state of all the animals in the resort," said a posting on A'Famosa's Facebook account.

No¡¯ to animal testing lab plan

Star June 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: Animal lovers, activists, a Senator and a beauty queen were among those who gathered in front of the Indian High Commission here to protest the plan by an Indian drug company to build an animal testing laboratory in Malacca.
The Ethical treatment of Animals (PETA) drove home their point by using a ¡°rat¡± mascot.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Selangor (SPCA) chairman Christine Chin, handed a memorandum to High Commissioner Vijay Gokhale, which was received by Second Secretary Birbald Anand. Also present at the protest was Miss Malaysia/World 2009/2010 Thanuja Ananthan.

Lyn Wong, 38, said: ¡°People must be made more aware that testing on animals is not necessary as there are many alternatives in terms of medical research.¡±

Mohani Niza, 22, said the Indian company had expressed its intention to use monkeys in experiments to test drugs ¡°because they think monkeys are not as cute as cats, but they do suffer as well.¡±

Also lending support was Senator Dr S. Ramakrishnan of the DAP, who said in a statement that animal testing should be banned because it was cruel, not reliable, inaccurate ¡°and below human decency.¡±

It was reported that Indian drug company, Vivo Biotech, was planning to build a multi-million dollar animal testing laboratory in Malacca to test-trial medicines on primates, dogs, and small mammals.

Animals For Drug Test

Malaysiakini June 2010

Over a dozen animal rights activists assembled in front of the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur today to protest against the planned animal testing lab in Alor Gajah, Malacca.

Organised by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) Asia, the protest started about 1pm after Peta's official rat mascot arrived in full gear by taxi, bringing along protest placards in English and Hindi.

Among those who took part in the protest were Miss Malaysia/World 2009/2010 Thanuja Aanandhan, who is also a Peta ambassador, and DAP senator Dr S Ramakrishnan.

Undeterred by the scorching sun, the protesters stood at the gates as they thrust the placards in the air, demanding that Indian company Vivo Bio Tech Ltd stops its plans to build the controversial testing facility.

'Vivo Bio Tech: Quit Malaysia!' and 'Keep cruel animal tests out of Malaysia!' read some of the placards. Protesters chanted ¡°Quit, quit quit! Quit right now!¡± as police personnel monitored the situation

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)Selangor chairperson Christine Chin and two other members of the group went into the diplomatic mission to submit a memorandum of protest to high commissioner Vijay K Gokhale.

The SPCA also went around collecting signatures in support of their joint petition against the facility.
This will be sent to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam once 10,000 signatures are in hand.

This is the second protest held since plans for the animal testing facility were made public in April. The first was organised in Petaling Jaya by a coalition comprising the SPCA, British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments.

The proposed facility has sparked international outrage, particularly after Mohd Ali declared that it is man's ¡°god given right¡± to use animals for drug tests.

Plans to build the facility in Malacca were put in motion after state-owned Melaka Biotech, Vanguard Creative Technologies Sdn Bhd and Vivo Bio Tech inked a memorandum of understanding on the facility following negotiations in India last January.

Upon completion, the facility is expected to conduct tests using imported beagles and white mice, and macaques sourced from local jungles.

Animal lab operating on the quiet for three years

Star June 2010

BUKIT MERTAJAM: While animal lovers are up in arms over the setting up of an animal testing laboratory in Malacca, a similar facility is believed to have been operating on the quiet here for the past three years.

According to the company¡¯s website, it is an independent contract research organisation offering toxicology services to the worldwide pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agrochemical and industrial chemical industries.

It claims to conduct toxicology tests on a range of animals. It said some animals were used for regulatory pre-clinical toxicity testing of pharmaceuticals and certain chemicals, such as agrochemicals and biocides.

The RM52mil facility includes a state-of-the-art dog unit, purpose-built to provide the highest standards of animal care and advanced study procedures.

There were also 15 animal rooms, each designed to hold up to 40 dogs and enabling the housing of one study per room, the company said in its website.

The company also said its non-human primate building included eight animal rooms. It added that the primates would be supplied from the company¡¯s own biosecure breeding facility.

The website stated that the company had a 3,200 sq m barriered rodent facility for short-term toxicity, carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity studies.

The existence of such a laboratory comes as a surprise to the state Wildlife and National Parks Department, which wants to investigate the company operating at the Penang Science Park in Bukit Minyak.

Penang-based Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) is shocked that the company is operating in its own ¡°backyard¡± without its knowledge. Department director Noor Alif Wira Othman said it had not issued any permit for primates to be bred for research purposes in the state.

¡°Breeding primates for research requires several permits such as for catching, keeping, breeding, selling or buying of the primates. We will conduct an inspection on this premises to find out if they have the necessary documentation,¡± he said.

SAM president S.M. Mohd Idris expressed shock and disappointment when informed about the facility.

¡°We have been actively fighting with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Selangor against the animal testing lab in Malacca.

¡°Little did we know there was a lab conducting similar activities here in Penang,¡± he said. A state official-cum-animal lover, who declined to be named, said he was disappointed with the previous administration for allowing the facility to be set up in Penang.

¡°I believe the company had once mentioned that it chose Penang to set up the facility because the laws on animal testing in European nations were more stringent,¡± he said.

Former state executive councillor Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said: ¡°The issue should not be over-politicised as I am sure proper procedures are observed to avoid causing unnecessary discomfort to the animals.¡±

British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection and the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research said about 115 million animals were used in scientific research globally in 2005 based on official national figures and estimates from the number of scientific papers published involving animals. Only Liechtenstein and San Marino have banned animal testing.

A check by The Star yesterday showed that there were fewer than 15 cars parked in the compound and CCTV cameras installed around the two-storey building.

There were hardly any activity in the compound except for a few people believed to be suppliers and contractors going in and out of the premises.

When met at the entrance, a security guard claimed that the company had not started formal operations yet. He said his boss was busy and could not see any visitors. Although he took down the name and contact number of the reporter, and said his boss would telephone, no call came from the company.

Animal rights groups protest against Indian company's plan

People¡¯s Daily On-line June 2010

A coalition of animal rights groups gathered outside the Indian High Commission in Malaysia here on Wednesday to protest against a plan by an Indian drug company to build an animal testing laboratory in Malaysia.

The protesters claimed that the 140 million-U.S.-dollar project meant for pre-clinical trials would cause thousands of animals to suffer and die as a result of the experiments.

They also handed a memorandum to the Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Vijay Gokhale, hoping that the Indian government would look into the matter.

According to the animal rights activists, the Indian company has planned to conduct trials on Malaysian long-tailed macaques and beagles upon completion of the laboratory.

Over 80 protesters from at least four animal rights groups were present at the high commission.

MDDB Notice Board

WE ARE SHOCKED!

We are posting this with a very heavy heart. A friend, Eileen, who is an independent rescuer called us this morning to say that someone had informed her of a dog that had met with an accident in PJ ¨C somewhere in Taman Megah. This is Eileen¡¯s message after the dog had been found dead. She had also sent some pics.

The dog died right in front of a newly opened cafe in Taman Megah nearby to Lim Kok Wing institute. He has a collar on. Was believed to have been hit by a car, Both rear legs have been crushed and can't move. Have been there for several days but no one came forward to help. Somebody left a packet of rice but doubt the poor boy could move to eat. What has our society come to??? Poor dog in terrible suffering May he RIP. May his death not in vain but help raise awareness that people can do something for injured dogs.

The person who had called told her he was informed the dog, which had a shattered leg, had been lying there for the last three to four days. We are shocked ¨C why didn¡¯t anyone even bother to help this poor dog. What about its owners ¨C did they know that their dog was missing? We made immediate arrangements to rescue the dog but when the caller went back to the scene this afternoon, the poor dog was dead. However, it was still alive when he had passed by in the morning. We shudder to think the pain, fear, hunger and thirst the poor dog must have endured these last few days. Why didn¡¯t anyone even think about calling the SPCA, PAWS or even us ¨C as we are certain that there would have been many people who had seen this dog. What is most appalling is that people can actually sit and eat at the restaurant while the dog was lying there dying! If anyone of you happen to come across this blog posting ¨CSHAME ON YOU! Dogs are mammals just like us that also undergo all the pain and emotions that we are capable of experiencing. Had he been rescued on the day of the accident or even the second or third day ¨C the dog may still be alive. So, we beg you people ¨C next time you see an injured animal on the streets ¨C don¡¯t look the other way. Help it! If its money that you don¡¯t want to spend ¨C you can always call us for a reimbursement ¨C we will pay you back even if it takes our entire month¡¯s salaries. This lack of apathy towards animals in need of help is indicative of a defective society. We just can¡¯t believe that not even one person had cared enough to help. To motorists, next time you hit a cat or a dog ¨C please do the right thing ¨C doesn¡¯t just drive or scoot off. RIP doggie ¨C we wish we had known of you earlier. Just look at the number of cars and traffic in the area - yet no one cared.

The number of cars parked near the dog - yet no one cared.

The poor boy - lost his life in vain.

Re: [melmel] UPM-DBKL Dogs Experiments [In reply to] Can't Post

KUALA LUMPUR: Hordes of people and more than a dozen dogs paid their last respects to animal rescuer Sabrina Yeap at the Nirvana Memorial Centre here yesterday.

The memorial centre's management decided to allow dogs to the wake because canines were very near and dear to the founder of animal sanctuary Furry Friends Farm (FFF).

The canines that were brought to the centre included two that were trained to be therapy dogs under FFF's Dr Dog programme.

The two dogs, Dr Kylie and Dr Samm, spent the entire morning at Yeap's wake. Sad goodbye: Rover, aged four, which was adopted from FFF, paying his last respects to Yeap at the Nirvana Memorial Centre in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur. The canine was named by Yeap.

Other dogs present were those adopted from FFF and other rescue groups, such as Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) and Garden of Eden (GOE), as well as pets that accompanied their owners.

Yeap died of leukaemia on Tuesday. She was 49.

According to FFF volunteer Wendy Goh, Dr Kylie was one of Yeap's favourites due to her calm demeanour.

The Dr Dog programme was special to Yeap and she took much pride in ensuring that the dogs went on to serve the elderly and special children as therapy dogs, said Goh.

She said the founder of the Dr Dog programme, Dr Jill Robinson, had given her blessings to continue the programme in Malaysia.

Among those who paid their last respects was independent rescuer Connie Foong, 56, who had helped Yeap during the Pulau Ketam dog dumping tragedy a few years ago.

Foong was among Yeap's core group of rescuers who had removed dogs that were dumped by Pulau Ketam residents on a nearby mangrove island.

Foong said it was unfair that Yeap had died at such a young age.

“She sacrificed her life for dogs and was a role model to all animal rescuers,” Foong said.

FFF spokesman Myza Nordin said that the dogs at the sanctuary were safe and in good hands.

She dismissed as unfounded vicious rumours that the dogs were now in a limbo. “This is untrue and we hope that those who are spreading these rumours will stop immediately. Please show Sabrina some respect,” Myza said.

Yeap's funeral service will be at 10am at Parlour No 13 at the centre today.

The cortege will then leave for Nirvana Memorial Park, Shah Alam, for cremation.

Her ashes will be scattered in the sea at Port Klang tomorrow afternoon.

Yeap, an orphan, leaves behind 200 dogs, 150 cats, countless friends and admirers.

Sad Farewell for Sabrina Yeap

SHAH ALAM: Renowned animal rescuer Sabrina Yeap was taken on her final journey to the Nirvana Memorial Park accompanied by two of her most favourite rescued dogs shih tzu Meow Meow and Pulau Ketam hero mixed-breed dog Kuning.

Kuning was among the 400 dogs dumped by Pulau Ketam residents on a mangrove island in 2009.

The dog had swam out to a nearby fishing pontoon and started helping Furry Friends Farm (FFF) rescuers to lure dogs out of the swampy island.

A team of therapy dogs, which were trained under FFF's Dr Dog programme, were also present at Yeap's cremation yesterday morning.

Yeap's ashes were later scattered in the sea off Port Klang.

One of FFF's international volunteers John Landon, who flew in from Melbourne, Australia, to attend the funeral, broke down in tears as he spoke about Yeap, who died of leukaemia on Tuesday.

“She was the hardest working person I have ever known and I never imagined that this would happen to her.

“She had also done a lot of nice things for me and I will miss her very much,” added Landon, who will remain here for a few weeks to help oversee FFF operations.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) rescue coordinator Irene Low said her organisation would always be grateful to Yeap for the help she had rendered.

“When we started off in late 2008, we had very little. Sabrina gave us 50 bags of dog food and paid off our RM10,000 veterinary bill to help us through.

“MDDB will always treasure her for that thoughtful and kind gesture,” said Low, who led the MDDB entourage yesterday.

Feline rescue group Stray Cats Rescue and Treatment Community Help (Scratch) founder Suzana Sulaiman, who flew in from Penang, said the animal rescue fraternity had lost a valuable member.

“It's a very sad day for all of us,” Suzana said.

FFF volunteer Victor Chee said he had started helping out at the sanctuary with his brother William and mother Jennifer Ng after Yeap took in a stray dog that they rescued three months ago.

“Although she had many dogs to take care of, she did not say no and that was why we decided to volunteer at the sanctuary,” Chee said.

Yeap, who was orphaned when she was just a month old after her parents died in an accident, did not have a single relative in Malaysia.

Her doctor father and her mother had eloped to Malaysia from China and lost touch with their families.

Yeap grew up in a temple and her 200-odd dogs, 150 cats and countless loyal friends were her only family.

Meanwhile, FFF spokesman Myza Nordin said arrangements were being made to consolidate the sanctuary's operations

SPCA Notice Board

Food Donations To Furry Friends Farm

SPCA Selangor and animal rescuers met on the 18th of July at the SPCA Selangor Humane Education Centre to discuss immediate plans to provide assistance to Furry Friends Farm (FFF), following the demise of its founder Sabrina Yeap on Tuesday. In attendance were FFF spokesperson Myza Nordin, FFF volunteers, Save A Stray, Cherishlife Home, petfinder.my, Project Second Chance, Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better and other animal rescuers.

Myza confirmed that there are over 30 volunteers who have stepped in to care for the animals, and that a committee will be formed soon to govern the organization. Until then, FFF is not soliciting any cash donations. SPCA Selangor has volunteered to be a food collection centre, and has offered food donations as well as treatment, vaccinations and neutering for the animals at FFF for the next 3 months. MDDB has offered to sponsor the monthly water supply from Syabas.

Food donations from the public started coming in immediately (in total 333kg of dog food and 58kg of cat food), and SPCA Selangor has donated an additional 500kg of rice, 500 Doxycycline tablets and 10 boxes of disposable gloves. The current FFF operations coordinator Mr Yong picked up the first batch of donated items on the 21st of July.

Somali who ‘helped’ to care for pet throws it into manhole

PETALING JAYA: The deliberate killing of a pet dog by two men who were caught on video throwing it into a manhole has raised the hackles of animal lovers.

Worse, the persons who killed the dog had earlier volunteered to care for the pet, claims the owner, a Jordanian student.

“I went back to Jordan on June 24. My housemate's friend, a Somali student, offered to care for my dog Kanilla for a month,” said the 19-year-old, adding that the female dog was a cross between a Pitt Bull and a Dalmatian.

On July 19, the owner was shocked when he received a message from the Somali student claiming that Kanilla had run away.

Further distress awaited the owner when he came back to Malaysia on July 26.
“My housemate showed me a video of the Somali student and another person throwing Kanilla into a manhole in Cyberjaya,'' he said.

He said he was broken-hearted over the cruelty inflicted upon Kanilla.

Cruelty comes in many forms but this is particularly very shocking. I urge the authorities to take the necessary action and to make a stand that animal abuse would not be tolerated in Malaysia. — CHRISTINE CHIN

The owner claimed that the perpetrators had used his housemate's laptop to transfer some files, including the offending video, and had forgotten to erase them after that.

He has lodged a police report at the Cyberjaya police station on July 31 with help from the Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

“Cruelty comes in many forms but this is particularly very shocking,'' said SPCA chairman Christine Chin.

“I urge the authorities to take the necessary action and to make a stand that animal abuse would not be tolerated in Malaysia.”

Stills of the video were also forwarded to canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) which posted the pictures on its Facebook page.

The posting garnered countless comments from enraged people from Malaysia as well as overseas,

Among those who commented was renowned bassist Andy Peterson who said: “Get the one who took the picture too.”

A Malaysian living in Canada, Juliana Vincent-Phillips, said the perpetrators should be deported, adding that “no one will miss these scums”.

MDDB rescue coordinator Irene Low said more police reports were being lodged to lend support to the SPCA's initial report.

She urged the public to obtain the sample report from the MDDB Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MalaysianDogsDeserveBetter

Protest at varsity over dog abuse

ABOUT 20 people from the Animal Action Group gathered at Multimedia University (MMU) campus in Cyberjaya yesterday to condemn two foreign students who allegedly threw a dog into a manhole recently.

PUTRAJAYA: The group, headed by its adviser, Sharul Nizam Rahim, also handed over a memorandum to the university's head of corporate communications, Abdul Lazi Nordin.

Based on messages, telephone calls and feedback from several overseas quarters, Sharul said the incident had given Malaysia a bad name.

He said Malaysia was also named as an animal abuser country.

"We want MMU and the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and take appropriate action against the students.

"I know our group is very small, but we are here to seek justice for animals. They are also living creatures.

"Most of us here are also Muslims, and our religion does not teach us to abuse animals, including dogs," Sharul said.

Pictures and videos of two African students throwing a dog into a manhole in Cyberjaya went viral on Facebook last week.

It was alleged that the two, entrusted by another African friend to care for the dog during his absence, threw the mutt into the manhole.

Their action drew ire from Facebook users, with many calling for the police to take immediate action against them.

MMU said they strongly condemned the act, which showed a disturbing lack of empathy and compassion on the part of the perpetrators.

Abdul Lazi said the university viewed the act as heinous and despicable.

"Should the university receives confirmation that our students were indeed involved, we will not hesitate to take action.

"Based on MMU's records, we do have a student whose name matches the one stated in the police reports.

"However, we are unable to confirm that this person in our database is indeed the perpetrator of the heinous act. As such, the university will leave it to the police to investigate," Abdul Lazi added.
He said MMU would cooperate with police.

"Based on police's findings, MMU will implement any action deemed necessary by the university's disciplinary board.

"We will not hesitate to mete out harsh punishment if the student is found guilty."

Petknode Cat Boarding's Shahrul Azuan Adanan and Yushairy Khairuddin were sentenced to 3 months jail by High Court to the maltreatment of 30 cats, which they had left starving, dehydrated and covered in faeces at the “pet hotel” over last year’s Hari Raya holidays. It was reported that more than 100 cats were at Petknode in unhealthy conditions, suffering from wounds and weight loss, while many cats died
