FLEA N TICKS KILLING DOG Can't Post

There are something which i dont understand.

I've seen many dog show and similar stuff held in a huge area covered with grass.

The problem is, i'm afraid to bring my pup to go - to see or to attend it. I'm very very very super afraid that my pup is going to be infected by flea and ticks.
I've brought a collar to put on for my pup for preventions, eventually this product will manage to scare away flea n ticks because of it's SMELL. But this product smell will not kill the flea or ticks, it only manage to do preventions. The product will went expired if the smell go day by day, i m afraid it's not strong enough to protect my puppy.
Some ask me to do FRONTLINE spray whereby flea will die once they bite my pup, i know this cure alot of infected puppy, but i rather not to get my pup to be bite by flea (very itchy n lost blood)
Yes, that product kill flea successfully, but my pup also infected n get itchy. Poor thing to see the furkid keep scratching n suffering. And flea also lay inside wall holes and lay egg, it's destroying the home. And sometimes bite human too.

Indeed i'm very afraid of flea n ticks, i came in contact wif a few breeder friend which they own many type of dog in a open yard and let the dog run freely. It's good to see them having fun in the greenie, but after awhile when i manage to hold a lil pup in my hand, i saw alot alot alot alot of flea in the pup body! BITING the paw, hiding btw the finger n leg, near the tails n ear. I'm so sad to see the cute little pup covered with flea and i m heartbroken to see it's scratching like crazy.

Dog that bitten by flea for a long period of time will soon end in a disaster to be infected wif flea poison.

Anybody can let me know how to do preventions for my pup, and why do they held all this dog activities in the grass area when the fact they know it's killing the dog when they were infected wif flea.

Thank you.

I'm a new dog owner, hope to get more info :)

Cheers,
Berry

I think you are overreacting. Just use the frontline (not the spray) on your dog and it would be fine. It is a good prevention. As for your home get pest control people to come in every two months, it is not that bad. You are certainly taking a lot of fun out of owning a dog.

Flea n ticks do not kill the dog unless it is tick fever. Most dogs recover from tick fever. Dogs will always love to run outside. The only thing we can do is to do prevention. Other than flea and tick have you ever thought about mosquito? I wonder if you do heartworm prevention cos they spread by mosquito.

If you are worried the product is not strong enough then change it more often than the recommended time. you are definitely taking the fun out of your dog and i pity your dog more because of this.

llsworkshop, what PSY and acsyen say is true... you are over reacting abit...

there are a few ways to prevent ticks.... collar, fronline spray, frontline spot on etc.... i personally prefer frontline spot on as i would be sure that the frontline is still on even if my furkid runs around in the rain because you are supposed to administer the frontline on to the skin. ticks might still come but they will die after sucking the blood of the dog with spot on... its a better product then the spray and collar...

i know alot of people are reluctant to use chemical on our furkids but sometimes a little bit is ok... especially its for the wellbeing of our furkid....

btw.. like wat ascyen said, is ur furkid on heartworm prevention? we wouldnt be able to know that the dog has heartworm unless you send it for heartworm screening or untill its too late....

look dear what khengteik and yen tell you is true, i am the one have to be more worried about this problem bcos i'm going to have my baby very soon and my furkid recently have flea and ticks ( i use to be very proud that my furkid have no flea and ticks at all Tongue ). so what we can do is to prevent and check our furkid hair all time. if you are still worried then buy 3 of the products spot on, spray and the collar.

I've done all prevention i had and hoping for the best that both my shcnauzer n cocker spaniel wont be affected by flea and ticks. My cocker had done front line, but shcnauzer not yet. Regarding the heartgard, they r still young to do it, i need them to be atleast 6month old to have the injections or pills.

Aiyoh... relax relax! Your dogs won't die when they get bitten by fleas & ticks. Absolutely NOT! Hey, you can't stop them from jumping on to your dogs. Too bad that the weather here in Malaysia is like this. You really can't stop them from jumping on your dogs & sucking their blood. Our dogs get it occasionally but we just bathe them with Bayticol & then apply Frontline Spot On. That's it! They all will die off after a hwile but again when they go out, new ones will jump on them but still they will die after drinking their blood. Occasionally the Spot On will fade off, so just apply new one one month later. That's all! There's nothing much you can so to prevent ticks & fleas from jumping on your dogs... Your Schnauzer is just allergic to them. Just have to give medication lor... Dogs will only get tick fever when one of the tick's infected. But only very very few dogs will get it. And if they do get it, just give medication & within a few weeks, they're cured. No big deal! No dogs DIE from getting bitten by one or two... hehehe! Nothing to worry about!

it's med to kill the fleas and ticks. has a greenish label by Bayer if not mistaken. usually if u dogs like to bath and stuff you can just soak them in water. that's what i do with my doggies, give them a thorough shampooing then soak their whole body in nice warm water. they'll usually sit there quietly and enjoy only. as for the head, it's just a small area u can dig around, usually under the chin or around the ears. the rest of the fleas and ticks will drown and can usually wash right off or u can gently just remove them during the rinsing. i try to avoid chemicals as much as possible, but the spot on is a must at least. i don't use chemicals on mine as they are small and kinda hard to prevent even soap from dripping down their eyes sometimes, so i'm kinda paranoid at times too.

so...i just drown those blood sucking freaks lol

I don't use any chemical anti-tick/ flea treatment because I dislike the smell of the chemicals. They give me a headache. Instead, I use a eucalyptus oil solution consisting of 1 part of eucalyptus oil and 7 parts of water which I put into a spray bottle and spray around the house. It is an effective anti-tick/ flea treatment that not only smells pleasant but is also cheap and non-toxic to me and my dogs. My dogs are tick-free despite running around the garden and have been tick-free for over 5 years.

The eucalyptus oil is Parrot brand, bought from Guardian, costs less than RM12 for a 56ml bottle.

The eucalyptus solution also keeps away ants and other crawling insects.

I really can't recommend this solution enough. Sadly, there are many sceptics who can't believe that something as cheap and simple as eucalyptus oil can keep away ticks and fleas but this is what used in the days before the chemical companies developed their anti-tick chemicals. The eucalyptus oil solution is NOT instant and takes more time and effort than the chemical solutions but surely it's worth it for something that is safer and definitely more pleasant smelling. I can only say, don't knock it until you've tried it.

Good tip.....thanks for sharing.

It should be ok to spray the solution on the dogs as well, right?

I'm not sure if I would recommend spraying it on the dogs like since it may not taste pleasant for the dogs but as far as I know, it's not harmful.

There are other ways to use the eucalyptus oil as a tick preventative too - you can put it in an aromatherapy burner with water and the tea-light underneath and let it diffuse into the air. This is usually how I do it because I have an occasional sinus problem and this has the double function of unblocking my nose and treating the dogs and my home. I don't remember how frequently I use the burner but I think it's around once a month. My current 56ml bottle of eucalyptus oil has lasted me quite a few months.

Incidentally, you could also use Eucalyptus Aromatherapy Essential Oil but it costs a lot more than the eucalyptus oil to perform the same function.

One final point is that this does not work as fast as Frontline or Bayticol or any of the chemical treatments. If you have a bad tick problem, you will have to manually detick your dogs every day initally to get on top of the situation and you have to be dilligent about it. The good thing about this eucalyptus treatment is that it doesn't put a strain on your dog's system (kidneys and liver) the way the chemical treatments do.

I personally feel that too many people want "fast and easy" when it comes to taking care of their pets. It's not worth it if the real cost is at the expense of the pet's long term health - after all, isn't the true final objective that we look after our pets so that they live long and healthy lives as our companions?

(Sorry if I'm being a bit preachy - my 15 year old poodle died just before CNY and she lived a long and healthy life despite hip dysplesia; a problem with her tear ducts which stopped producing tears to lubricate her eyes; and a weak heart.)
