Australian Silky Terrier [Grooming] Can't Post

Hi guys,

Off topic; I posted the same thread under "Toy Breed" but so far I did not get any replies so might as well post it here too.

(:

I know that threads with this specific title have been posted many, many times but I've been going through but cannot find the relevant information that I want about Silkys.

I have a pup and she is 10 weeks old and I'm wondering how to groom her ( I know the basic brushing with mini slickers and a metal comb ) but I'd like to know more; for example, when should she be sent for grooming services ( ie; getting her hair trimmed, nails cut, et cetera ).

So, if you guys have links, do post it up. Thanks and appreciated.

Once all the vaccination completed, u can take her to pro-groomer liao lor...

Let them do everything for once and u tau-si lah.....see what they do, how they do, what they use and sendiri balik and kaki lai lor... Tongue

I send so many times grooming also cannot kaki lai yet cos cocker spaniels got style, got symetry punya. Besides I don have a clipper at home. So still have to send to groomer.

It's all trial and error lah... nails can sendiri cut. But have to kah kah lai. Get them used to having their paws touched and held. My big dog sudah phobia cut nails on his front paws cos bleed a few times liao. So now take to groomer also must 2 ppl. One must hold him and the other cut. Crazy

Kah ki lai ... I do not have the courage. Last time when I cut my late pooch's nails, I nearly cut the flesh so I have phobia already.

Yeah, you are right about the pro-groomer. I am waiting for her to be vaccinated fully, then can take her there. Plus, I have zero experiences with Silkys so not too sure what to expect.

Ey Steffy, where are you now?

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your grandma. Yes, somehow still need to show face back at home, not matter what reason we have, we still gotta do it.

You are working in Subang but staying in Kelana Jaya; wow!

Hahaha!

Off topic; since you're here, my puppy is scratching the back of her ears, but no ticks or wound there. What would it mean? If her ears are itchy, I tried to clean them but she'd struggle so I'm worried I will poke into her eardrums. :|

Hmmm not excessive scratching right? Not like her leg is glued to her ears right?

Well u gotta observe lah.....if she scratches once in a while, then normal lah. We humans also will scratch our head even though we got no kutu right? Same theory lor....

My dogs, ears also scratch, legs also bite bite bite, cos itchy kua but check check nothing wor.....so i leave them be lor. After all, they are still dogs u know. Wink

steffy; no, it's a once in a while thing, the same for her front legs. I'm just worried cause I read somewhere the scratching can mean yeast infection in the ears hence my worries.

By the way, how old is your CS? Very cute (in the display picture).

Haha, luckily she doesn't have ticks. SInce Puzzle came to my house, i only cought 2 ticks. The 1st one was the size of a rasin! Im not kidding! at first i thought it was a rasin but when i picked it up, i saw legs and a tiny head. Ewwww...and i squished it and aloot of blood came out. I brushed her everyday and check for ticks, so i should have felt that HUGE tick. But i didn't, infact it just crawled out on the table where i left Puzzle. And the second tick is just the red tiny tick.

There two kinds of ticks from my understanding. The rounded ones that have wrinkly bodies and it looks like a raisin and the spider ones which is almost red in color with spidery legs.

:D

Re: [kyels_k] Australian Silky Terrier [Grooming] [In reply to] Can't Post

The one in the avatar was born january 2006. So that will make him almost 2 years old in 2 months time. This is Rascal.

Another one born February 2007. But that one, if u wanna see got to go to my friendster and take a look from there lah ok. This one pulak is Gizmo.

Scratching can mean a lot of things.......that's why everyone will tell you, you should know ur dog best! You observer and listen to that small voice in you lah. If you dont feel right, then go check it out. No smell, no discharge, no lesions, no redmarks, nothing at all, means he is OK lor. I'm sure with an infection, sure the skin will be reddish liao. Yeast infection, I would think sure got smell cos theoretically, it has to be a little damp only yeast can grow.

U just know it punya lah......2 weeks ago, rascal was diagnosed with ear canker. Basically ear infection which left untreated will eventually become a fungal infection. Prior to the vet visits, I only noticed that he started to have a lot of ear wax discharge, brownish red in color. No smell or anything like that. Just a lot of ear wax. Today I clean, 2 days later lagi banyak. He wasnt in pain and he acted normal to me. Still scratch his ears occassionally and shakes his head and all. Then when I bathed him, i accidentally pulled his ears and he started screaming. The scream sounded like he was in a lot of pain and not just like the scream he would let out when we accidentally step on his ears or legs.

So that incident rang a bell and I just knew something wasnt right with his ears already. So after drying him, we checked his ears again and it did smell a little fishy. But we thought it was the ear cleaner that we were using which had a strong alcohol like smell to it. We started to observe him. We realised eventhough he shakes his head, he was shaking it with a lot of care. So he doesnt swing his ears too fast. We started to realised he scratched his ears carefully too so that he doesnt move that ear too much.

All that sign just doesnt seemed right, so we took him to the vet the next day. Betul betul confirm ear infection. So the vet had to clean it up and jabbed him and gave him 1 week of antibiotics. Apparently it was an early stage, with early bacterial infection. Thats why no smell. By the time it becomes a fungal infection, he would lose his appetite and stop eating. It's 2 weeks now, my vet is in India but he advised us to continue with the ear drops till he comes back next week and we will bring him in again to have his ears cleaned. Crazy

So, don worry too much lah. You'll just know it when something isnt quite right with ur kid. Other than that, they are perfectly fine at being just dogs! Tongue Hey they are suppose to be therapeutic ok. Suppose to lower ur blood pressure not the other way round lah.

Re: [steffy1811] Australian Silky Terrier [Grooming] [In reply to] Can't Post

steffy, can I add you in Friendster (totally out of topic but never mind ... mwahahaha!).

Yeah, I know. Intuition and what we sense or feel about the furkids. It did not smell, her ears. It was only the normal ear wax smell but the rate she was scratching got me worried. So when I took her for the last vaccination last week, I told the vet to check because she would not let me. True enough, my fears were confirmed. A minor yeast infection and the vet cleaned it out thoroughly. After that no more smell already. Bought the solution also and told my brother to clean her ears because I am staying in KL and they are in Perak. So I told him my responsibility is also his! Hahahaha!

:P

But yes, it's always sixth sense.

Usually scratching is normal no need visit vet.

When you found out his ears wax build up after few days you just clean his ears up. All you need is to clean his ears more often using ears cleaner & cotton bud.

Once you found his ears wax reduce you only need to clean his ears once a week after bath.

One last thing. Always keep his ears canal free of long hair. Pluck out the hair and keep his ears hair short.

that reminds me of something chris, is it important to put ear powder into their ears? Is it to keep it dry only? Wink

So clean with solution and then put powder inside? Would the powder increase the risk of ear canker/infection? Smile

Some will recommend put powder after cleaning the ears.

But for me I not using this method. The ears powder will definity absorb those moist inside their ears canal but it will also form pieces of dry powder inside their ears. If leave unattended I am sure chances their ears get infected are more higher.

So all I need to do is make sure their ears canal are clean & dry after cleaning it.

One more thing abour ears powder. If the powder kena your dog hair, the hair will dry up and cause tangle easy. That mean hair easy break.
