I'm back! new member on board! Can't Post

Hello everyone. 3 years has passed since my last post in this forum.

sad to say that i've forgotten my password and worst of all is that i

even forgot my email add that i've used to sign up. After trying for endless times

i've decided to give up and sign up a new one >_<

I do hope i can find some of my old friends here. my old name was Avesmay.

In my first post, i've mentioned that i want to be a qualified vet. And now, i'm

currently a 2nd year vet med student!!! finally i got into my dream course

I do hope to meet nice people here and of course doggy lovers. There's a lot more for

me to learn in the journey of becoming a good vet.

cheers!

Re: [staceymay] I'm back! new member on board! [In reply to] Can't Post

hi there, stacey.

r u from the FOVM/FPV UPM?

doesn't matter if you are not...

great to know a vet student frequenting a dog forum. so ur target must be small animal practise.. obviously?

u know, if u read the post here often, you will find out the grouses of dog owners, the amount of knowledge they have... and i believe it will make you a better vet one day.

knowledge is not just from the text books. ...

one of the skills that i think is very important, and they don't teach you in vet school is - communications!

as a vet, u not only need to have ur vet knowledge, but u need to be able talk to your clients.

an introvert, shy, reserved personality should be changed, imho.

you know, once you are practising, even as a newbie at a private clinic, all the eyes will be watching your every move. and we as pet owners will talk about it here... :p

that day i read a member wrote about a lady vet who left a puppy unattended on the table, what if the puppy falls he said, young vet who seems don't noe what he is doing... bla bla bla....

so when will you go into the consultation room in uvh to 'check out' owners with their pets?, before the resident vet take over.

my 1st time at uvh, i went in to the room with my mutt, place her on the table, then suddely came out a few blur looking flers, i look at them they look at me... there was silence for a while... i tot wtf is goin on Sly.

well im not sure if you guys will be told to keep the mouth shut. but i would really appreciate it, if there were some introduction. like hello, we are trainee vets, we are not suppose to consult, but if you don't mind, may we examine your dog? we're gona take a look at her bla bla bla..... u know what i mean....

the internet is also a massive source of information for you guys.... so use it wisely....

pet owners like a vet who is friendly, caring...etc etc..

being a student is bz enuff, but we hope you'll drop by often.

a lot more to write... soon...

Hello Supermutts,

Thanks for the reply, i really do feel welcomed here ^^

yeah, i'm from FOVM UPM. [ for those that are wondering, it's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine =) ]

Yes, i' opting for small animal practice but at the same time, i would like to gain as many knowledge as

i can on various fields. It's the passion i have for animals that drives me to be a vet.

As i'm only in 2nd year, we're just learning the basic stuffs. Not so much about treatments and diseases.

I totally agree with you that PR skills are very important. I'm working on that too.

We will only be having rounds in UVH when we're in 4th year. There is a thing i like to share here,

i heard that students are advised not to talk to the owners and just let the resident vet handle the patients.

This is to avoid us giving the wrong concepts and because we're still inexperience, they do not want the clients to

have wrong impression about quality of the clinic.

I do understand how you feel, having someone who doesn't talk to you in the consultation room,

but most of the time, the students are just doing what is being told. The seniors said it's really

stress to work in UVH, it is not a place to make mistake and experiment. So, i do hope all visitors to UVH will

be patient with the students, we're all learning to be a good vet Laugh But i guess a simple greeting mean no harm?

i'll bear that in mind next time. We love to meet friendly and understanding owners too.

Till here then, i'll drop by as often as i can ^^

Cheers!

Re: [staceymay] I'm back! new member on board! [In reply to] Can't Post

all the best in vet school ok.....

yeah like mutt said, effective communications is extremely important in service line. I guess a simple greeting is ok as long as u don cross the resident's line. Just intro urself lah, ur name, what year are u in. It will start off a conversation di. Wink Ppl might ask u how many moreyears to go? Ur area of interest and bla bla bla. U'll be surprise how a simple hello can lead to a long conversation.

And ohyeah, we definitely do talk about vets here. From good to bad....hahahahaah oh well, swallowing criticism is definitely one way to learn to improve oneself.

U will eventually be in the healthcare line. Just on animals. The key to survive in this line, be confident, know ur facts well, and learn to have effective PR skills. Ppl will love you and respect you for that. Hahahahaha that's how I survive so far. Good communication skills doesnt necessary means its always effective. As a student, it's safe to start now. Whatever mistakes u make, ppl wont blame you. U're not fully responsible for it. When u graduate already, thats when u're fully accountable for every single decision u make. LOL...the best advise from my microbiology professors last time in uni. Dont be afraid to try...just hentam only....like i said, u make a mistake now, no one will point finger at u. Ppl learn from mistakes. Just don repeat the same ones lah.

HI leecy and steffy Smile

Hehe, thank you for all your wishes. i definately need them as i'm goin to sit for my finals soon. there goes my break and back to lessons again. Really, i cant wait to finish my studies and go out to practice. I do love to talk to people and to learn about dogs thru them as i cant have my own dog at the moment. I used to have mongrels, nurse them back to health and send them to better homes or PAWS...

I'm sure every responsible dog owner can be a doggy expert in one way or another. Furthermore, there are so many different breeds to learn. Do share with me the joys of having these four legged companion =)

I will definately work hard on all those things you mentioned. Emph!

still, in UVH, we're dealing with your doggies, therefore we must be caution that we dont make silly mistakes .

Life is about making choices and facing the consequences.. thanks for your advice ^^

May I ask what are you both doing currently? i'm taking microbiology too! studying virology now...

all the best to you... and hope you will be a vet soon Frown

i think another important thing to being a vet is do not cease to learn. every animal that goes in to the vet's room is a new learning experience... even if you've already become a vet, do not stop to learn ... if you havent, go watch Patch Adams. its a true story regarding doctors... theres where i understood that no one should stop learning..

oh yea.. i heard that there are quite a number of malay students at UPM's vet faculty that likes and handles dogs too... send them my regards... cool ppl though Frown

It's not long if taking into account the amount of knowledge needed to be mastered before we can go out to practice...

But i just can't wait to venture out into animal healthcare industry. especially when my friends from other courses are graduating one by one. Most of my friends have graduated and have found their niche. I just wanna start mine as soon as possible. =)

Yeah, most of my friends love animals, just varying in the degree and maybe species.

Of course not everyone put vet med as their first choice, but nevertheless they have grown to like it as time goes by, as we learn more about the course.

I'm really happy that there are responsible owners that care so much for their pets and treat them as equal. it's really a huge improvement as compared to last time

Yup, i'm staying in klang valley. currently staying in college. Renting a room will be my last option if i can't get a stay next year.

yeah... thats true... just learn as much as you can.. Frown

everything boils down to the passion i guess.... just learn what you can from books or experiences of ur seniors or lecturers...

at least you get to study what u like... for me... didn't bother to finish my studies because the subjects that was promised to be available was not available and in the end i had a very bad shouting match with my dean and i just didnt bother to finish my course then.... but now at least i am doing what i like to do.. Frown

i dont think you will have problems to get a place around UPM area.... if u have transport... there is even quite a nice place at taman university... i used to frequent that area :)

Re: [khengteik] I'm back! new member on board! [In reply to] Can't Post

that was a fast reply.

Learning from books is so plain. it's different from talking to experienced people where i can remember better.

Oh, to be honest, i went through a LOT of hassle to get into Vet Med. That is why i treasure what i'm doing so much. if it weren't for the passion, i'll be graduating next semester as a nutritionist... I'm going to make the most of my 3 years in hopes that by the time i graduate, i'll be ready to step into the real world.

It seemed like you had a tough time during your uni years.. what happened after that? Did you continue your studies in other institutions?

It's not so much about getting a place and transport. it's the budget. hahaha, staying outside definately means more expenses.. you know.. a student's life ^^

Wow, a nice chat while i'm away? I must drop by more often then!

Wonderful thing to do what you love. I graduated with a business degree but since the first day i stepped into the college, I am certain that I will only go into pet industry, the only area I am interested in!

Well now here I am, in pet supplies industry and I'm having 12 dogs running freely and those "certified" by me will get to sleep with me everynight. I face challenges to ensure all my dogs are healthy, surveys a lot to ensure that they are provided only the best. Thank god so far all of them are out of any skin disease or viruses (touch wood!). But I do face problems like ticks intruding once a while, i just not able to stop it from coming forever!!

Also after years of raising maltese (11 of my dogs are maltese, 1 is a very lovely mongrel abandoned by previous owner) I realised a way to solve their tear stain problem. A very interesting topic i eagerly want to discuss with a vet or a vet student like you! (One out of so0O many!!)

Oh my, hope that we can find a day to yamcha or something, my gf surely got lots to chat about. She is the one who always browsing online and tell me what is good, what is "in" and there goes the money flying.

BTW, can i have your e-mail please?

Hahaha, ya, you should drop by more often and share things with us.
Pet industry supplies? I'm very interested in that. I got a friend who is looking for Pet supplies. Maybe I'll tell him about you.

I think a bussiness degree is useful, I took the subject for a semester as an elective, uhm, shall i say i find it challenging to memorize all the theory and they actually teach us what are the principles, organization, planning etc. Some of my Business degree friends told me i'll learn more to just go work for a month in any company..

back to your doggies, the maltese in the picture is adorable. you actually raise so many of them! Do you breed them?
And most amazing is you keep all of them indoors! how can you manage so many of them? Are they well trained? will they come if you call them by their names? is it messy to keep so many? Gosh, i'm just very curious to find out.

I have been to a breeder's house, and the couple actually modified the whole house to accomodate the dogs. all in total about 100 of them of various species.. Hebat ler.. they even have a maid to help with the cleaning. But because they breed them for sale, so the dogs are kept in cages most of the time.. unlike yours can run freely..

When i get to have my own place in the future, i'm gonna keep my dogs indoors too. How nice it would be huh? ^^

Tear stain problem? ya hor, common in maltese.. sure sure can share with me... i'd like to know what you have discovered.. so eager to tell ppl.. hehe

your gf is also a dog enthusiast ya? No prob, i like to make friends with people like her, sure got lots to learn from you both.

Yes, i volunteered in a vet clinic for 3 months when i was having my long holiday after STPM. Initially, i was having doubts in my ambition, i fear i cant stand the blood and dislike cats. Of course, to be a vet, one must not only love dogs.. The Vets Dr. Vijay, Dr Mervin, Dr. Erni and all the staffs in UVH treat me very nice and they are very patient in explaining things to me. I even talked to other vets on what vet med is all about. After those 3 months, i have never been so sure of what i want... to be a vet =)

I do have an issue with breeding dogs actually. But the one i met is actually a certified breeder and the condition he kept them was ok. As i am just a visitor, it's not nice for me to interfere too much. To the very least, his place is not like a puppy mill. there are a lot of controversies on breeding... mind to share what you all think about this issue?

well.. i think i have said it countless times.... I HATE PPL WHO BREED THEIR PETS!!!!!!!!!!

but if you are an experienced breeder and breeds for the sake of improving the bloodline, i guess i'm ok with it... well although i'm not really a big fan of ppl who breeds their pets, i do have to say that some really did their homework and really went through alot of trouble when their furkids give birth... but then again... unless he/she is experienced, no one should breed their pets.

breeding.... my idea is kinda extreme or radical..?

please visit this topic that i've started.... its kinda interesting...

Its good to know that you've helped at a clinic after stpm, nowadays, i have observed that the vet profession is kinda demanding. After u've grad, u can actually apply to work in UVH rite? then as u gain some experience, u may wana work at private clinics outside, until one day u can have your own clinic.

a reputable clinic in KL, they open 7 days a week, work from 9-8 most of the days. The vets there are like, hardly have time to do any other thing.. Yes they are very dedicated and have the passion, but if that is what they love, then.....

i've seen many dedicated vets... the vet that was looking after my dog was so freaked out when he heard that zoey is my first dog... he kept repeating things like "she's still stressed out... give her some time...", " be patient with her", "remember to bring her for her vaccination", "remember to feed her with heartworm tablets" etc etc etc... but actually i do have experiences with dogs.. but most importantly, i love dogs....

most of the vets know each other... i think 99% of the vets in malaysia all come from UPM... its either their senior or junior or same batch....

Re: [staceymay] I'm back! new member on board! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yah, once a while i do breed them and show them as well. One of my maltese, name Angel is the Top Maltese for Year 2006.

Well, I don't really thought that handling all of them is difficult, although it is a handful of them, but me & my gf spend most of our time at home with them. I believe that most of the dog owners will have to go for study or work, and left not much time for their dogs but for us, i believe that we spend more time with our dogs compared to others who own only 1 or 2 dogs. We are commited to our pets, hence we give up to study at oversea, we complete it in Malaysia instead. Also, we have do not have the chance to go for holiday that takes many days and more dogs meaning less leisure hours. We go into pet supplies & work on our own at home so that we can spend time with them while working. We thought that's worth it since it is a pleasure to do what we are interested in.

It wouldn't be messy at all if you train the dogs since young and keep the house clean. Most of my maltese already wee wee pad trained, meaning they will always go to the back & pee on the wee wee pad. We always welcome visitors and most of them will spend hours at our home, as they feel comfortable to be at our home. This is my home, the dogs are my sons & daughters, visitors are not visiting a dog farm, they are visiting my home, hence I want them to feel at home.

Although we are able to handle a handful, we do not believe that raising 100 dogs is a good thing. We might be able to give them good food & make sure it is hygenic, but how are we going to provide them with sufficient love? Also, they would have to be caged! Which is a BIG NO! for us, as we do not believe in caging our dogs, we believe that the most important thing to provide the dog is freedom.

I do understand why certain people hate breeders that much, since me myself have visited many breeders and i'm pity of those dogs, too! But to us, rather than saying we hate them, we choose to goes into breeding and strive to produce best quality puppy, which i had achieved and striving to be even better. We do not cage the dogs, we provide them with the best food, they stay at where we stay and we really love them like our own kids. This give a choice to the buyers.

But buyers must do their part too. Too many people out there looking for cheap source of puppies instead of good breeders. They will keep both of their eyes shut by choosing to ignore the bad living environment of the dogs and go ahead purchasing a puppy which is cheap. It ends up they are supporting them. Visit more breeders and only choose to buy from breeders who treat their dogs nicely. If nobody buys from breeders who kept their dogs poorly, then these breeders will have to upgrade to what people wants or forced to close down.

Although I do breed my dog, meaning I am a so call breeder, I do not feel ashame and i feel proud of it. To me, i hate lots of dog owners who do not do research before purchasing a dog too! One of my nearby neighbour trying to teach a dog to sit for more than a year, yet the dog never learnt because everytime he teach, he whack the dog! I never heard he is praising the dog. Then i seen lots of dog owners caging up their dogs and leash up their dogs by giving lots of excuses saying their dogs are bad behaved. But the fault is from the owner, dogs are smart and obeying. If the owners spend sufficient time, love, being patience and being consistence, i'm sure the dogs will be well trained! And they will give excuses say no time or watsoever hence they have to caged up or leash the dogs.

I would NEVER sell my puppy to such owner that intend to cage up, or leash up my puppies. I am a breeder, but i am a responsible dog owner that loves and care for my dogs too! I hate & look down on irresponsible and ignorance dog owners. They are the same, shouldnt own a dog at all. No matter you are a dog breeder or dog owner, BE RESPONSIBLE. It is equally bad for ANYBODY to mistreat their dogs, no matter they are breeder or not.

I believe to be a vet, you face the same situation too. Many will say many vets out there are money minded or blame a lot whenever they believe their dogs are mistreated, there are challenges. But i met lots of vet that earn respects from the other too! So no matter what your profession is, do it with integrity and i believe you will be one of the respected one, too.

Anyway, before things getting ways too serious, in real life we are very "cincai" people, if you want to pay us a visit, feel free to let us know, always welcome.

BTW, have you notice my request for your e-mail address? Mind giving me? TQ.

Yang
