natural herb remedy for canines Can't Post

hi all,

I'm a strong believer in organic and natural herb remedy for myself and my family. However, are there natural herb remedies for our beloved canines?

There'r many success stories in us/australia/etc where natural herb remedies worked without side effects.

Anybody here has any experience on this?

Thanks.

of foods, like lamb is hot, pork is neutral, cold etc...

from the library 10 years ago, i will try to borrow it again
hope its still there.

Re: [malauc] natural herb remedy for canines [In reply to] Can't Post

well, it depends on wht kinda problem ur dogs have,
and what sorta thing u would like ur dog to improve.

Last time my mutts shed a lot , coarse fur,
according to the book i could giv them
" Shou Wu Pian " if u r chinese ed u might know wht this is, or if ur family uses chinese herbs n' medicines.

this herb is taken to improve blood circulation and to
darken n' thicken a person's hair.

if u read this book u might have a problem with
the names of the herbs and medicines, cos the names
are in english, and u can't just walk into the chinese
shop n' tell the tauke in english u wan this n' that...

u get wht i mean... haha...

this book also shows u pressure points in a dog/cat
where u could massage to improve certain ailments.

very interesting, looking forward to borrow it again. Sly

cool!! sounds great...

i know the ingredients shouldnt pose any problems to our canines since it being natural, but wouldnt

the dosage vary from canine to humans, pups to adult?

anyway, i'm still doing more research on this alternative healing method. there could be some

difficulties in having access to certain herbs stated in the book. but i'm quite conclusive about not going

with western medicine.

thanks anyway.

if u are doing research, then u should read the book, there are recommended dosage stated i think.
Chinese stuffs, shouldn't be a problem to get here, the thing is,
u hv to noe which is which, cos the book don't use chinese character.

if u read about homeopathy , then the stuff are not easy to get here,
there are books on homeopathy for dogs in the bookstores as well.

in my opinion, i will use traditional med to maintain n' improve
certain conditions, but not as a substitute to western medication,
esp for serious diseases.

Re: [kien29] natural herb remedy for canines [In reply to] Can't Post

hi kien,

so u have ur GR for less than 5 months.

First of all, pls list all the food/kibble brands
that u have fed him. so we would know.

the conditions that u mentioned, my mutts suffers from those when they are young, from few months untill a few years ago. now they are 10.

really no medication can cure it, so i think u can forget
about those, dun force ur dog to take medicine anymore.

u have a GR and it is kept indoors i believe, so it wasn't exposed to the outside environment that much, but still he suffers from skin itchiness, rashes, thin coat.
Does ur GR pup have dry skin? skin abit flaky, coat is
dry and coarse ?

The best bet is still on the food.

U mentioned that u have switch brands, but remember
the effect wont' be overnight, it will take months, to a year to see the results. So u need to be very strict and consistent, just feed him one type of food for months.

California natural herring potato and canidae LnR is a good start. Avoid food with many added ingredients.
Even if u have fed him those before, but i think it is too brief to see the results, ur dog is just over 5 months old.

To improve skin n' coat, u should supplement with
omega 3 & 6. Last time Bayer have a product called
'Murnil' it is very effective, but since it is bovine based
and the madcow outbreak, it has been discontinued.

Now there is Velcote by bayer, this is a highly recommended supplement to improve skin and coat
condition, and it is blardy expensive, u might be shocked. This is the new packaging, it it distributed
by Novachem frm SG.

U could get it from sea park pets, but i think they have
old stock, just make sure its not almost expired.

Another supplement tht i hv tried on my mutts is
California natural skin & coat supplement.
Its also a bit expensive. But very effective as well.

http://www.californianaturalpet.com/.../default.asp?id=1607

The cali nat oil has a strong garlic smell, ur dog might not like it, so i think u would wana try velcote as it is almost odourless.
Both supplement u need to feed ur dog for a period of time to see the results, at least a month, or longer.
And u must be consistent to giv them everyday, according to the recommended dosage.
i saw sea park pets have calinat oil, but the last time
i checked, its almost near expired, almost all the bottles, so remember to check first, make sure the expiry date is at least one year or more from the date of ur purchase.

yea shampoo plays a role too. i would recommend
Virbac Epi-soothe Oatmeal shampoo and oatmeal conditioner for dry skin.
They have a wide range of shampoo for different skin
conditions.

As for chinese medicine, u really need to understand
those before trying on your dog.
Lately there is a lot of complain regarding china made
products, and its best to avoid those at the moment.

Re: [supermutts] natural herb remedy for canines [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh..supermutts...thank you thank you first for such informative comments...

ok first.. i fed my GR :

1. Eukanuba puppy (2 weeks)
2. Blackwood puppy (l1 mth)
3. Canidae (Chicken n Rice) (2 months)
4. Canidae (lamb n Rice) = Rossi dun like it furthermore dunno why.. he got diarhoea once he took it..so we stop it (he didn't even finish his first pack)
5. Current = Nutro Choice (Lamb n Rice) with Breeder's choice can food for skin n fur (with glucosamine & omega 3 & 6) (1 month)

Secondly, yes.. my GR is keep indoor.. right now he is train to go out to pee n poo on the grass at my house garden.... And i dun think he got dry skin .. cause he dun have flask..the coat is not so good though.. still a bit of baby fur n a bit coarse on top of his body.. look very dry.. Now the red spot turn to black spot.. a lot of black spot..

Based above.. do you think i should continue using Nutro Choice brand? and continue with the can food?.. I need to add the can food cause Rossi will not eat if i didn't mix with can food with his dry kibbles..

Also.. do you suggest i continue adding few drop of primrose oil?.. cause i still have it...

Please suggest... i will go buy the velcote for Rossi.. but right now.. he is very offensive when see medicine.. cause there r one time he bite his pill and of course it taste so bad.. even i can smell the medicine.. Now very hard to feed him pill..

Hope you really can help...Thanking you in advance...

Re: [kien29] natural herb remedy for canines [In reply to] Can't Post

u r welcome Smile

canidae L&R, a few ppl said their dogs dun like it,
is it really that unpalatable??
look at the ingredients, it should smell yummy, Sly
or maybe the stock here is not fresh at all??

Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, Canola Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Flax Seed, Sun cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Lamb, Lecithin, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory Root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, L-Lysine, Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of Vitamin B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Organic Selenium, Dried Papaya, Dried Pineapple, Vitamin B12 Supplement.

from the above, u can see there is a lot of extra
ingredients like bacteria etc. maybe that's the reason
ur rossi kenot stomach it. some dogs can't tolerate
food that is too rich.

the skin now has dark spots, actually those are tiny
scabs, its starting to heal now.

nutro natural choice LnR, if u look at the ingredients,

Lamb Meal, Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Natural Flavors, Soybean Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Whole Brown Rice, Dried Egg Product, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine, Dried Kelp, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Ferrous Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Vitamin A Supplement, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid.

its OK, just that there r lotsa rice, in the first 5. poultry fat....
but if u could afford a better dog food like cali nat
herring and potato , which has less ingredient, which
i think is better for dogs who suffers frm skin/coat
problems and food intolerant.

http://www.californianaturalpet.com/.../default.asp?id=1326

our poor dogs are not born to eat kibbles, it is us who
force them to eat it. so i am in favour of adding a bit
of can food to make it more interesting. as long as
u can afford it. the breeder's choice can food, not avoderm?

eve primrose oil is a good source of GLA(of omega-6 family), so just use it up.
normaly, those supplement for skin/coat have a balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

i think i've mistook Novacote (selling in sea park)
for velcote, both have the same ingredient i've heard.
cos the last time i bought from the vet is Velcote.
If u could find velcote its better, else go for novacote,
just take note of the expiry date.

im goin to sea park today, will check it out.

i think u should stop feeding him medcine for this
skin condition, should ask ur vet wht are those pills.
and the purpose of it.

as for pils, u don't just throw it into the dog's mouth
or just put it amongst the kibbles, u have to push it
gently into the dogs mouth behind the tongue, then
the dog will swallow it naturally, there's a way of doing
it, ur vet should teach u.

Hi.. thanks again!!...

i just bought a 7.5 kgs Nutro.. guess i will let Rossi finished up first then i shall change it to Cali Nat.. but kind of hard to get it here in USJ, Subang.. Most of the pet shop dun sell...

Canidae L&R doesn't smell nice compare to all that we have tried.... i think that's why Rossi dun like it.. I still have the whole pack of it!..Unsure

Oh.. btw.. i mixed Rossi's kibbles with either Breeder's Choice and Avoderm... these 2 brands... cause without it that choosy Rossi dun eat!.. sometimes i will cook some brown rice n mix with egg n ham n kibble too.. this one guarantee finish! Frown

Actually the vet already thought me the way to feed Rossi medicine by open his mouth and push it gently into his throat just like you advice.. but my fault.. one day i didn't push deep enough and very fast.. he gulp it out and bite it as it like his treat... his mouth is all white in powder as the pill is in capsule.. yikes!!

Can u let me know the price for Velcote n novacote?.. is it in pill form?... hmm.. if its smell it will kind of hard to feed him..Unsure Oh, btw.. i already stopped his medicine....

Again thanks for the advice ya!!

Re: [kien29] natural herb remedy for canines [In reply to] Can't Post

yes finish up d nutro, and i've just been to sea park pets,

they have a box full of sample pack California Nat Herring
& potato, i check the dates, good until next march/april
so should be fresh. the packs are packed by the
manufacture, it has labels etc, not packed by the petshop.

so in the mean time while waiting for nutro to finish
u can hop by to sea park and ask them for the samples.
get a few like 3 packs or more, cos its kinda small.

they have novacote, its in liquid form(oil) not capsule.
its almost odourless, just oil smell.
and u need to just feed a lil, (check the instructions).
so shouldn't be a problem for rossi.
500ml list price is RM120!! should be able to get discount. there are smaller bottles.
i duno y it is so blardy exp, but i read/heard a lot of
good comment about it.
i feed my mutts velcote as well but switch to Calinat
coat supp, cos velcote is just too exp.
Dun get the calinat oil frm sea park, they have a lot
of bottle but all near expired.

i checked other coat supplements in petcenter ikano.
some even have by products, duno y they wana put
those inside.

sea park carries avoderm now, they said the distributor
(frm sg) slash the price few months ago.
i bought 2kg of L&R Oven Baked for RM 26 for
trial feeding.

if u hv decided on cali nat, or other food, get it frm
sea park, i believe their price will be a few RM cheaper.
they have Nutro as well.

Canidae LnR u bought 15kg again? wht is the expiry date?
normally the biggest bag i buy is 6kg only, cos big
bags tend to sit for al ong time in the shop,
and u will need a long time to finish it.
i store all the dog food in air and light tight containers.

Re: [supermutts] natural herb remedy for canines [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi again..Supermutts...

Now i have another problem is that my Rossi hind leg got problems.. and brought him to vet and suspect that he might get HD ... i got heart attack now!! (but vet said he still young to take x-ray to determine the HD, so need to go back when he turn to 6 months old)...yesterday he been limping whenever he woke up from his sleep position and he has difficulties to wake up.. But when i brought him to the garden for a brief walk.. he is ok.. he even try to run.. n play with me.. but whenever he wake up from a long sleep .. sure he will limp one.. I just hope that he only strain his muscle due to after playing ... cause yesterday he is too excited as i let him play at the small swimming pool i bought him.. when he see water he go crazy.. due to slippery.. he might hurt his leg from running here n there.. n jumping too..

I thought of giving him Glucosamine.. but i would like to try on his food first.. i have checked on website for Breeder's Choice Lamb n Rice (Healthy Joint Formula) with chondroitin & glucosamine.. I am more worry on his hip rather than his skin.. now i want to concentrate on his leg n hip.. am worry sick!! At current, as i already told you.. am mixing Nutro with Breeder's Choice Lamb n Rice (Healthy Joint Formula) canned food.. not dry.. Do you think i should change Nutro to Breeder's Choice.. Do you see this brand sell in pet shop.. i haven't seen any for dry kibbles.. but canned food yes la...

Please advice.. i really need advice.. i dunno where to start n what to do... After one problem n another...

Thanking you in advance..

well, unless ur Rossi is diagnosed with HD, before that
lets not assume that is having HD.

heard other GR owners said that u should not exercise
ur GR pup that much, make sure he don't fall,
don't feed too much until he grows too fast.

Not sure if those are myth or the truth, so u need to do
more research in HD and GR.

The shops where u buy the can Healthy joint formula,
they should carry the kibble as well, if they don't,
u can ask them y? and ask if they can get for u.
I've seen the kibble in Pet safari, yesterday just drop by. and Rainin cats n' dogs in bangsar n' puchong
i think they have as well.

U can always get a small bag for trial feeding,
make sure its fresh, and the expiry date is there.

last but not least, dun worry too much n' panic,
maybe rossi is just too tired after having fun in his
new pool :)

ive just browsed rossi's blog, u said wait till 6 mths
for x-ray, then the vet is taking him trow for xray?

rossi can do the roast pig position, one of my mutt
loves to do that as well. Not all dogs can do that :)

yeah.. i do not want to think it is HD... not at all..

Because i heard many people said that a dog cannot sit and down as in froggie style as Rossi did if they have HD problem cause it will cause pain to it hip.. which a relieve to me though..cause he love sleep like that even with his leg limping..

Rossi is growing pretty fast.. yesterday weighed him, he is at 20kgs for his age 5 1/2 months.. that really shocked me.. and i think i should cut down his food.. but sometimes pitty him cause he can eat and he is a pups.. is it the time where we shouldn't cut down his food.. right?

My vet in USJ, Subang Jaya is taking Rossi for a x-ray tomorrow.. he will drive Rossi to one of the PJ vet to do x ray.. so, guess we shall see how..

Sometimes.. i just wanted to leave it.. cause puppy tensed to hurt themselves sometimes.. and they can easily heel.. mayb am too panic and too pampered him.. i just want to check everything that is in doubt in me..

Hi Super mutts...

Rossi has done his X-Ray.. please check it out the outcome in his blog.. Doctor is keeping his x-ray but am going back to get it back..so i can take picture and let others to see and see what others think.. cause from my point.. i don't see Rossi hip has problem with HD only with his right side of his Hip which show a slight small shallow gap between the femur and acetabulum.. and doctor claimed that he definitely has the potential to get HD..

i did some research on internet and i found this flexicose...

Actually, I was checking out the Breeder's Choice food on their website..
then there is a link to Pet Arthritis & Glucosamine Centre
www.glucosamine-arthritis.org/arthritis-pets/index.html

And from there they have this comparison of glucosamine products.. and that's how i found Flexicose..

This Flexicose sound great and furthermore is in liquid form which i long to look for it since here is hard to find.. and on top of it, Rossi doesn't like pills.. and u probably know he bite one of those nasty bad taste pills before... Tongue

And i ordered it from online internet last 3 days ago.. from their original website.. and has yet to arrive...

Have u check out the website.. and tell me your opinion... I can't find this brand in Malaysia..

hi, so u have rcv ur flexicose yet?
i've read other users who uses Synoquine, saying that it
has a higher dose and purer, even recommended by vets.
i think u can buy it from vets here,

anyway u need to compare for urself these products,
regarding the concentration, purity, source, price etc.

Hi.. well, unfortunately.. i haven't receive that Flexicose yet.. and yeah.. i did heard of Synoquin which my vets and my friend who had a GR recommended me.. heard is quite good in the market.. but to compare with Flexicose.. Synoquin is only 495mg of Glucosamine but flexicose has 1500mg!! and for Synoquin u need to take at least 3 tablets a day.. but for Flexicose.. u only need to take 1/4 of small teaspoon mixed with food... and in term of price.. Synoquin is consider expensive.. My vet sell me RM200.00 for a bottle of 120 tablets which i think can only last at less than 2 months.. but for Flexicose RM100.00 for 240ml and can last for 128 days...which i think is worth to try if its good enough i might continue using them...

Anyway.. Rossi leg is getting better now.. eventhough sometimes when waking up from his long sleep and down position.. he will still limping a bit.. but not too severe as last time... i just hope that the limping is because of him spraining himself while playing which will cure after 2-3 weeks time..

Oh btw... i wanna thank you again for helping me and replying my questions and doubts all the time.. u r such a great help to me...

Thank you.

Where r u staying actually.. mayb we can meet up with our doggies sometimes.. and oh yes.. i do not know which pet shop you are talking about in ..am not very familiar there.. am staying in Subang..

yea if i do happen to bring my mutts around ur area/nearby, then we could meet up with rossi. Frown

the pet supply shop that i frequent, sea park pets
is in SS2 pj, i guess most ppl are familiar with that place
cos of the hawker center.

to find tht shop first u must locate McD, which is at a corner, then u circle the block where McD is located, u will find PohKong jewellery shop which is facing a row
of terrace hse, right after pohkong u will see sea park pets, which occupies 2 shop lots.

go on a sunday, before 1pm, thats the only day u will
find a parking space in SS2.
