Should I get my puppy (18 weeks old) tested for worms before giving her Heartgard?
From what I understand (through the threads I have been going through here), puppies below 6 months will test negative so there is no point in testing.
It explains over there by Doctor that it takes 6 mths for the larvae to transform into worms..n blood test is only to test for presence of adult worms..

Hi all,
My pup is currently 5 months, I bring him for heartworm checking last few days. However, vet advice to have blood test 1st. Charge me RM100 for the blood test and 2 tablets.
He told me deworm is already included, feed him once per month. Would like to know is this a common practise among all?

Hi Chris, he told me to give 1 tablet monthly for my puppy. ( I purchased 2, for 2 months) This tablet is the combination of heartworm + deworm. Meaning that I do not need to deworm my puppy again. Is it advisable?

I heard a bit different about the testing thingy, the heartworm test is only necessary for dog older than 6 months old which not on heartworm prevention previously, why 6 months leh? my vet told me is because of the heartworm test can only detect heartworm after period of >6months (when baby worm become mama worm)... i'm kind of confuse with that, but she said the general rule is if less than 6months old, can start heartworm prevention without testing, if more than 6months old, must test, if positive go for treatment; if negative than go for prevention and she also told me that the best time for prevention is to start at 2 months old??? whatever lah

since NONE dog died of heartworm infection? then why bother to give heartworm prevention? For me i didnt hear and see (i wish it wont happen in front of me) any cases of dog died of heartworm infection YET, maybe there were but just I didnt see/heard ENOUGH of the dogs in my life, and i wont make that conclusion.. For the 2 months prevention issue, i need to ask my vet again the next time i bring my doggie for checkup....
