Labrador Retriever Vs. Jack Russell Terrier Can't Post

Hi,

I have a 10 month old male Labrador Retriever and I recently adopted a 7 month old female
Jack Russell from a friend who didn't have the time to care for her.

My Labrador Retriever is a little on the dominant side when it comes to humans,
where he only listens and respects my dad and bullies everyone else at home. However, he seemed to
have gotten along fine with our 8 year old cat, who completely ignores him even though the labrador
escorts the cat out of the house each time. (He got scratched by the cat once when he was a pup)

The new Jack Russell pup also seems to be on the dominant side. She is very good-natured to us but
is very aggressive towards the labrador and the cat. She barks at the labrador constantly and tries
to attack him. She also ALMOST bit his nose once. He too barks at her.

I would like to know a good/safe way to socialize them and get them to get along well.

Please help.

whenever introducin new pets to ur home, do the intro outside of everyone's territory. the best is to have an exercise & a good run with both doggies.do this on neutral ground (eg field near ur hse, a fren's hse, etc. this way, both will be too tired to start fights & will be more open towards each other

cheers

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestion. But, how am i gonna take both of them out
together when my JR keeps barking and trying to attack the Lab??

I'm afraid that the Lab might get annoyed with the JR and bite her...
I also dont want the Lab to get hurt either...

The Lab is like 30+ kg and the JR is like 2-5 kg.....

=(

Hi, just a stab in the dark, since you mentioned your dad is the accepted "Alpha" with the lab which I am certain your JRT is more or less accepted the same, get your dad to control the situation and introduction on neutral ground.

PSY is right...usually if ur plannin to intro 2 quite dominant doggies, u would need help from another handler...of cuz the alpha human in the hse would do the trick...try not to intro doggies unprepared by urself...

when takin the two doggies out...each handler will walk seperate ways till they meet up in a specific area (neutral ground) from here u can slowly let em check each other out...

good luck & do keep us updated ya

You have to control her unwanted behavior and the situation. When the small dog is being a butt you need to stop it, separate the 2 and let them both calm down. Take a firm calm tone with them. Get them both down beside you and have a talk. No difference when dealing with 2 kids acting up. Once calm and being good-give treats.

When you see the play get rough stop it immediately. You can leash and separate, like doggie time- out. Be consistent about what you expect of them and what you will not allow. They do not get "good attention/treats" until they are calm and playing nice

Use a simple firm sharp vocal sound like 'shihh!!' or 'hey!'(instead of words and yelling) and then point your finger at the misbehaving dog. Stand in front of her and look at her eyes till she submits and lower her body. If she refuse and run away, call her nicely and ask her to come --->sit---> down. This will show her that she is being warned! The main thing is to stop/warn your dog unwanted behavior quickly. Little dog probably is just playing but it is getting on big dog's nerves. Ears and neck are tender yet sensitive area for some dogs. If you see your little dog 'kacau' your Lab or come near his neck, then immediately warn her- the little one.

Shouldn't be long before they will recognize the "sound" as your warning to stop what they are doing. Keep at it. Both have to learn the limits. The little dog should not hurt the big dog to cause a fight, but the big dog has to know the limits too. You be the referee.

Try to interact and play with both in a good way and reward and praise a lot. When they are acting up they do not get your attention instead they have been warned.

Re: [Lady Eloise] Labrador Retriever Vs. Jack Russell Terrier [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

Thanks for the great advises....so far...when i bring the JR out with me to play with the Lab...the two of them are fine...just as long as im holding the JR and the Lab is next to me...sniffing at her...but as soon as i let the JR loose to play with the Lab...she starts chasing to bite his tail. The Lab just runs away from the JR and it goes on and on...

This is the only problem now, besides the Lab barking at the JR when she is in the house with us...but that I think is because he is jealous. I let the Lab in the house sometimes...but he is wayyy to big to be playing in the house with the JR...

Annette,

Dogs especially Lab need a lot of attention and human contact. They like to be near to people as close/much as possible and prefer being touched and rubbed- heavy petting. If you could be fair to both, it would be good. Why not create a play timetable so both of them could play outside and during break or quiet time, ask them to stay nicely together inside watching TV with you?
