How to teach my dog to swim? Can't Post

Hi there,

Any tips on how to teach my doggy to swim? I bought a kiddies wading pool for her but she got so scared to even go near the water. When i tried carrying her and js letting her paw touch the water, i could feel her heartbeat beating so fast! So i ended up using all the water to wash my car and car porch.Unsure

u don't actuall need skill to teach ur dog how to swim...they will learn it naturally by themselve..

all u need to do is get ur dog use to water....some dogs r natural water lover, but others are not...

try to juz fill a low level of water (below her chest).... after she had get use to it after a few practise...

then onli increase d level....is great that u had a private pool at home...then u can practise it everyday...

once u dog can voluntarily jump into it when u direct her to do so...then i beg u can increase d level n let her had a swim...

Err...there's no way in teaching your dog to swim. Your dog's scared of the pool actually not so much of the water. Well, maybe the water too lah...So just decrease it just like Amanda said but down to her elbow level or even lower to her feet.

My Faith was scared of it too in the beginning until Amber jumped in, so she followed. What you could do is since you don't have another dog, you can jump in and carry her in too at the same time. Just fiddle and flick the water a little. If she tries to go out all the time, just keep pulling her back in. Sometimes gota force a little to make the dog not scared of it or used to it. That's how it works...

Also teach your dog how to get into the pool by herself. Show her the steps 1 & 2. Put her two front feet into the pool then carry her two back legs into the pool. Eventually after minutes, she'll learn the steps to get into the pool by herself. Also keep throwing her fav toy into the pool to encourage her to play in there. If she takes out the toy and steps out of the pool too, keep throwing the ball into the pool again to encourage her to go in again & again & again UNTIL there'll be a time when she'll never wana come out of the pool ever!

Oh and by the way, you take really beautiful pics of your poodle. Must have a good camera huh?

Thanks for the tips Amanda & Amber.Faith!

I threw her toy in to trick her to go after it but she js put one foot in then 'kecut' again. Then she kept running around the pool and barking at the toy and me like scolding me for putting it in there Laugh. I did jump in with her in the end and lure her with treat but after she get it, she quickly fly out of the pool again. She look so funny with her legs wet n skinny but the body still very fluffy. Now i leave the pool empty n let her play in it without water 1st and will try filling it again this weekend.

Also thanks for the compliment on Coffee's photos but must give the credit for the beautiful pics to my husband. He's the photography buff.

No problem!

Oh, your husbands a photographer? Wow...Hey, can your husband take some good photos of our dogs, coz now we don't know anybody who can take really good photos of our dogs but I can see your husbands really good at it. What do you say?(whispering)

Good to hear that she's having good time playing in the pool. I don't think she's scared of it anymore. Try increasing the water the next time you let her play. Sooner or later, you'll see her not wanting to come out of it! Hehehehe!!!Frown

the best way i would suggest bring your dog to the beach, most dogs can swim (besides pug and bulldog need to give extra precaution?). sea water easier to float and besides that, the water start from low to deep, your dog will just get excited and running along the shallow level initially, it's fine. after many rounds, when they know the water fun, throw the toy or treat that can float to very small distance so that they re ABLE go n fetch it. slowly increase the distance. try not to force them it will create a fears to them. important is to let them know it's fun for both of u. praise a lots. soon your dog can be an expert.. I'm sure he won't mind taking pics of your dogs but you're staying in KL, right? We're in Kedah la. So very far away.

Maybe when we go to KL, we can organise a doggy get together with photo session. Hehehe..... We also wanna let Coffee socialise more, being the only dog at home is very lonely for her ma.

No, we didn't attend the A'Formosa event coz too far away. Really wanted to attend K9 day in KL but i work on Sundays, so we couldn't make it. Very frustrating to stay here in Kedah which is a Malay state and to have different weekend (Friday & Saturday). So we tend to miss out on a lot of events. Sumore if bring puppy out, then ppl will look at you as if you're bringing the plague. Even when i bring her for car ride and i wind down the window for her also kena the evil eye from passersby. Grrr!!! But lucky my immediate non-Chinese neighbours are ok with her coz most of the Chinese staying nearby also got dogs. Or else my doggy will be like a prisoner liao, kenot go anywhere.

is useful to teach ur dog the 'stay' command.......especially when u wan to snap pic

until now pacco only do a good 'stay' for photo session...apart from that, no matter how firm u tell her not to move she still runaway...
