Dogs’ day out for thousands of pets

Mar Tin Lee’s love for his pet is apparent.WAGGING tails and sniffing each other were common scenes when the second Malaysian K9 Day took off at Bandar Utama Central Park on Sunday.

The morning weather with cloudy skies that threatened rain did not put a dampener on the spirits of more than 3,000 Malaysians who brought their dogs of all sizes to the event.

Dog owners were already crowding the venue by 8am despite the official programme not starting till 8.30am.

The larger dogs tracked mud all over their feet, scampering to sniff out everything and meet everyone, while the smaller ones snuggled in the safety of their owners’ arms.

There were treats too in store for everyone, with prizes being given out to those who took part in contests such as dog beauty pageant and the fastest eating pet.

The doggies had their share of treats too. The folk at the Purina booth were giving out free samples of their latest Purina Pro Plan brand dog food, made from salmon for pets with sensitive skin and stomachs.

Some owners even resorted to brandishing the pet food in front of their dogs to keep their pets’ tails wagging during the wagging tail contest.

The two animal welfare societies, SPCA and PAWS, had booths set up to sell souvenirs and to raise awareness on pet welfare. SPCA even brought along four dogs that were spayed for adoption.

Most of the owners came, not to participate in the contests, but to let their pets have a good time.DBKL officers had a booth too to promote the new microchips that would allow dog owners to track their pets.

Nestle was also there, offering free samples of Coco Crunch cereals and Nescafe drinks.

“We should have more events like this in Petaling Jaya so that more dog owners can take part in them,” said pet owner Ellen Koh.

The annual event was organised by Purina and Puppy.com.

Purina Pro Plan country business manager Ernest Yong said the objective of the event was to raise awareness among pet owners on responsible pet ownership.

“Purina is interested in the pet care industry as a whole and not just sell pet food,’’ he said.
