keeshond barks then looks, how to stop? Can't Post

got this 18month old keeshond we have had for about 4 months and in the middle of night, someone walks past the front gate or the dog hears animaginary noise it wakes up, growls, gets up and barks once or twice while running to the gate to see what is happening, find nothing then goes back and lies down and goes to sleep again. 95% of the time there is nothing and no one around, its really annoying, i havent had a decent sleep for about 2 weeks now because this bloody stupid dog barks about once per hour when hearing something before going to investigate what is happening.

how can this be fixed???

I think you need to change ur attitude first then only you can change the dog barking problem.

I will never call my dog "this bloody stupid dog"!!! Sorry if I sound rude here. I just don't like the way you say about ur dog that all.

hm.. u may have to look at the nicer side of ur dog.

he/she is tryign ot protect you and your house..

the dog is just sensitive to sound.. its pretty normal..

u seem fed up with your dog.. maybe as he grows older, he will be able to get used to the usual sounds at night. example rats or stray cats at night. and will be able to differentiate normal and abnormalities at night

in the meantime ,stay patient....... and send kisses to ur dog from me Blush

its an on and off thing, one week will be all quiet, next all noisy. 4 months is enough, i dunno how much more i can take.

if you were living here you would be feeling the same as i do about this damn dog. ready to strangle it.

well then, maybe you should spend some time training the dog to stop barking when u ask him to.

dun get angry with your dog juz because he barks at noises.....

4 months old is still a baby

i have a 5 months shih tzu with me now and to me she is still a baby

and for the better , as puppies as easier to train!
u should search for some training tips

its not 4 months old, we have had it for 4 months, its 18 months old.

and how do i train it to stop barking when i ask him?? i have no idea.

its always stopped barking any way after a second, it only barks once or maybe twice to all noises then its quiet when it goes and investigates and finds nothing. the most annoying part is its in the middle of the night and wakes me up every time.

Sorry to read that you are not happy with your dog. To answer your question, YES almost any behavior can be changed. However, it might take some of your time and it might require that you do some changes around the house too. One immediate remedy which works most of the time is a simple increase in exercise. Walk the dog in the evening, play a while and most dogs will be sound asleep after that for 5 hours. Few questions did popup my mind while reading your posting. Your bedroom faces the front gate? Windows open? How come that one bark throws you out the bed? If exercise does not work for your dog, then you might have to consider making some changes to that. That could be another option for a quick fix.

Hi Wozza...... I had a foster lab who will bark whole night (real barking non stop) ... at anything that moves even leaves. I moved him indoor until he was adopted. We spent a lot of time with him and that helps. The new owner sent him for training n now he is a fine dog. He barks because he was insecure n who wouldnt when you r pass from one house to another. He wants security n love n his new owner gave him that.
Lets b honest.... a lot of ppl keep dogs n want the dogs to adapt to OUR lifetstyle, n we get annoyed when they howl/bark/jump at us/dig holes in our garden. When we keep dogs we must think dogs. It all boils down to no proper training that a dog misbehaves
Dogs are not perfect but they are nicer than us in many ways... Take time to train your dog n spent time with her.
Let me quote this from Wendy Richards :

"Dont ever try to make your dog look foolish - it ts only you who will end up looking the fool. "

Sorry if I say this to you... your dog is definitely not bloody stupid.... he just wasnt bloody trained properly.

how do i train it then??

its been about 6 months now, neighbour has started complaining that it barks too much. neighbour takes out the washing, puts their blind down, walks up the side of the house, the keeshond barks at them as it can hear a noise next door over the fence. While the westy we have just sits there as if nothing is happening. the westy is pretty good, wont bark unless theres loud noises or someone comes into the yard. this keeshond barks at everyone walking past the front gate while the westy just sits there watching like he always has.

another thing that is damn annoying, EVERY night i get woken up by this damn keeshond as it barks first then gets up and goes to the front to investigate a noise it hears, while the westy will run out and look first, then if need be it will bark. how on earth can i get this keeshond to stop barking initially before getting up to investigate a noise? then bark when he gets there after seeing whats going on if necessary?

I believe the keeshond likes barking, and is noted for its watchdog abilities - i.e. it barks to warn you about anything it perceives as a threat.

Since the dog was already 14 months old when you got him, his current behaviour is the result of previous training or lack thereof. It sounds like you need to retrain your dog and this is never easy. You might need to enlist the help of a professional trainer or an experienced dog owner. One thing you cannot change easily if at all is the dog's inherited behavioural patterns. If it is a watchdog, it will bark. But you can retrain him to bark at the right things. Sounds very much to me like the dog was poorly trained/socialised and consequently perceives every little thing as a threat.

Hi Wozza.... one thing at a time... as your Keeshond barks at yr neighbour... can he see yr neighbour movements? Some dogs gets worried n he thought that his job is to protect his surrounding so he will bark when he hear sounds. Ask your neighbour to help you out. They can give him a treat....each time they see him. Just throw over initially then later give to him directly. When the barking stop they can slowly stop the treats. It pays for you not to shout at yr dog when he barks. Your shout sounds like a bark to him so it will excite him more. Distract him whn he barks..... n when he stops praise him. We have experienced with lots of barking dogs...most times its because of certain way the dogs are brought up tat coz the barking. We also discover that scolding n punishing does not help these poor dogs but distracting them n rewarding them with treats when they behave helps. Its a long process so it depends on how much you want to keep your dog. If you r willing to work with him give me a call.... 012 6775627. All the best.

Re: [mbless] keeshond barks then looks, how to stop? [In reply to] Can't Post

well heres an update of actual problem that has taken me a while to diagnose. while we are home now, the dog is as quiet as a mouse, rarely barking at anything unless someone comes into the yard.

as soon as we both leave the house and no one is home the dog barks continuously. i have video tapes the dog on many many occasions now, studied the tapes in details and on average the dog barks a whopping 4620 time per hour, YES 4620 times per hour. IM ALMOST READY TO SHOOT THE BLOODY THING. im considering giving my neighbours a bloody gun so they can do it for me.

the dog barks at nothing. it just runs around the back yard barking at thin air. not a single thing can be seen on the tape as to why the thing is barking. the second dog, a young westy is just sitting down near his kennel sleeping while all this is happening being an angel cause there is nothing to bark at.

I NEED HELP ELSE THIS DOG IS GOING TO DOG'S HELL.

date has been set, appointment has been made with the vet, 11th september the dog is being put down. we have had enough, too many neightbour complaints, we are the dogs third owners, the dog is too noisy, no one can help here or in real life. we are the third people to give up on this dog so im not going to put any future owners through the torture. we have been given advice to get it put down if it doesnt respond to the last bit of training we are giving it.

Hi Wozzza,

Uhmm.... it a bit sad that your dog and you cannot really make up as a good companion.

I understand, currently your patient has worn off or else you won't made this decision - to put your dog down on 11 Sept 2006 and this date is co incident to "911".

However, I hope you can spare me some of your precious moment to share my thought regarding this case of your :-

1) As a human being, we have a number of channel to express our feeling whether we are happy, frustrate, sad and etc. We can do it by talking, smiling, writing and many more.

BUT

2) As a dog (animal) they don't have any channel at all to express themselves to us what they are thinking or feeling except with their own language - that is barking for dog, meowing for cat and etc.

Therefore, to get to know each other whether human to human OR human to animal OR animal to animal its takes time and more communication. However, I also do believe / understand that you have tried your utmost best to resolve this issue. In your heart you have by no means want to take this drastic action and I believe you still love your dog but this has gone too far (barking) and you can't take it anymore.

For you, this might be the best way (put the dog down) to resolve the issue. But pls have a deep thought, if and I said "IF" the dog can speak like us, do you think they really want to die in this way. I believe the dog will keep on begging you to spare them or give them a chance - is just like any criminal which are already sentence to death.

Now the question is "Just because we (Human and Animal) cannot communicate well with them, and since we are more superior then them and now we can make decision to take away this animal life without giving them a chance to speak out"?

Dear Wozzza, I have NO rights to advice you what you have to do but I just want to appeal on your dog behalf why don't you reconsider the following proposal from me instead pass the dog a death sentence?

Pls send your dog to the SPCA or PAWS and spare the dog a life. Since you are paying for the Vet to put him down why not donate the money to this non profit organisation for a better use. In fact you don't have to go by yourself to SPCA or PAWS, just telephone them and they will come and pick the dog up.

By doing this, your good deed will be remembered always by myself, your dog and also to the whole world dog lovers.

Last but not least - Pls reconsider to my proposal - give the dog a chance to live, pls send the dog to SPCA or PAWS and you will always be remembered by your good samaritan actions.

Dear Wozza,

I write to ask you to reconsider. Please consider andsin's suggestion.... please do not put the keeshond to sleep.... please....

If you really cannot tahan his barking issue, maybe you can also put him/her up for adoption in the Adoption thread. Please, spare his/her life. Many people are looking forward to adopt a dog. Do not think the keeshound will give problems to the new owner too, cos I belief different people will handle issues differently. So please give him/her a chance to live. Thank you...
