Juz thought of teeth care of dogs is a rare topic to be discussed here. Is it a must to brush a dog's teeth? Is it the best way of teeth's care? Are there any other options?

after reading so many useful infos posted by surchinmy, u should be able to answer this question yourself, no? did additional research on your own?

u can even email the vet to ask Qs, he does reply to u.

ur dog has some tartar build up? if u inspect his teeth u will be able to tell whether it is serious or just minor tartar problem.
let ur vet have a look if u are not sure.

can't rely on kibbles to clean the teeth properly.
U can give him bones which doesn't splinter, ie pig femur bones which is easily available in the wet market (at least at my place).
But if u have toy dogs, the femur bone will be too big for him.
The dehydrated rib rack will be suitable for toy dogs,cos u can break it up into single ribs. Too bad the product is no longer in the market for the time being.

The idea is to let the dog grind its teeth on the bone, it will help to remove some tartar ,but bear in mind that the dog only uses a few of its premolar to grind, the other teeth like canine,incisors, molars are hardly touched. mostly the outer surface of the teeth are cleaned by grinding on bone. Grinding too much on bones will wear the teeth out faster. So if ur dog's teeth is already clean(after scaling) u dun need to let it grind on bones, brushing is a better choice.

Brushing can't remove tartar but will help prevent further plaque accumulation.
Brushing is difficult if ur dog won't co-operate. Tht is y most owners neglect their pets dental health. A market survey shows that there are so few dental care product, compare to shampoos, ear and eye care products.

some give their dogs greenies, it does work to a certain extent just like the bones. it can't clean all the teeth.

One dental care product tht is important but not available here is the CET Dental rinse n' gel which contains Chlorhexidine,that destroys bacteria that forms plaque on both teeth and gums,so u don't need to brush that often.

y? dogs seldom has dental problems? or owners are lazy to talk about it?

Thats what i meant. Actualy I open up this thread & another is not bcs I want to be spoon fed. My intention is to lighten up those who dont really know the importance of certain topics. I asked questions bcs I know very well if I am the only one who posted every single question & answer, who is going to read the damn boring thingy?

If we randomly ask around the dog owners, how many actually knows why should we feed the more expensive holistic formula or BARF formula? They will tell you they feed very "good brand" always advertised one ar...

More serious one is dental care as u said. If we were to ask around, how many og\f them actually does brush their dog's teeth? 10%? Hence this thread is created.

Well basically I am very interested in dog thingy & does quite a lot of research myself, thats why i realise the importance & hope that others who read our postings will get something too.

It is more effective to discuss in 1 thread rather than browse around searching for sub topics.

CET dental products from the reputable Virbac,

sadly almost none is available here except some almost expired CET toothpaste lying around.

I've written a letter to DHKS asking them to consider bringing more CET stuff and do la some proper marketing to educate pet owners.

not tht difficult to enter UPM's FVM.

then u open M'sia's first pet dental clinic,specialise only in dentistry.

it is clear that most local practitioners just aren't into dentistry. They may clean and polish teeth, but pay little or no attention to individual tooth problems.

Of course there are alternatives to brushing teeth. I feed barf diet and do not need to brush teeth. Once a year we go to the vet (anyway, have to get the annual shots) and let him check the teeth. Until date, he did not find a chance to make a buck from it.

Do any of u used denatal care product before? I realised that there are only few, (for toothpaste) maybe less then 4 brands? available in the market. Is that true? So are these few toothpaste brands are good brands or it is juz for the market demand? Does we really need to buy toothpaste for dogs or brushing their teeth will be effective enough?

CET is one of the toothpaste brand.

DHKS is a company name that is distributor of E*kan*ba dog food brand in Malaysia & Singapore.

There is no market demand for dental care products. I use CET toothpaste with the long dual end brush provided, to me it brushes better than the finger brush. There are a few tooth paste in the market, CET, Orozyme(wrong spelling maybe), Vets Best Dental Care All Natural Tooth Gel (yellow package, dist by Mariam Sidesh), the one with some cinamon+tea tree etc(white package), Four Paws, one or two others more, forgotten. Crazy

I use CET bcos it is from Virbac,a veterinary pharmaceutical company devoted exclusively to animal health Smile

Brushing ur dogs teeth is effective enuff, provided ur dogs teeth has been scaled to remove all the tatar, ur dog has no dental problems,and u brush everyday.

A clean teeth from the outside doesn't mean tht it has no dental problems, tht is the catch, esp when ur dog has tartar for many years n' u bring it to the vet to have it cleaned, then u see, wah so clean n' nice, so no dental problem, u might be wrong. want more info then u read the site tht i have posted above. Sly

Well I am using D.D.S. - Doggie Dental Solutions. Well the reason i choose this product is it is reasonably priced, not too expensive. My opinion is all toothpastes are similar functioned, thus i prefer to buy one which is affordable.

Yes. I use CET on my dogs. I don't brush my dog teeth everyday but about 3-4 times a week. I used baby toothbrush to brush the teeth.

I agree with you.There are alternatives available.My dogs chew on rawhides and bones and the teeths are in super good condition.

You bet. I had few dogs til age of 15 years old and no dental problems til the very last day. Just died of old age, nothing wrong with the dogs at all. My experience with kibble fed dogs is oposite, had to brush teeth and still got dental problems, but of course, that were not my dogs and I am not sure how the owner did take care of it - I was just doggy sitting.

You are wrong my friend. No need to brush teeth when feeding BARF diet, just follow the feeding schedule and you will see just perfect teeth and your doggie won't stink out of his mouth either.
