Cage or fence? Can't Post

hi there! i shall be getting a puppy soon, maybe next month....after many many months of "survey" & reading up abt keeping/caring for puppies. in fact i've been accessing this wonderful, useful website for some time now & have learnt a lot! thanks to all dog-lovers out there!

i intend to get keep the pup (toy-breed) in the house. my query here is....during the night, is it easier to keep the pup in a cage, or a fenced up area? after toilet training (esp 1st night), i thot it'd be easier to put pup in a fenced up area with it's basket at one end & it's "toilet" (newspaper in tray) at the other end.... then at night it won't make so much noise & ask to be let out to wee. if put pup in cage at night, it may make a lot of noise to wanna get out. could someone with experience in this matter give me some advise pleeez....b4 i make my purchases.....thanz......

Hey Y@ Smile

The fence will be a good idea... after all the trouble u go thru toilet training the pup, I am sure u dun want it to dirty its sleeping quaters...Imagine the poor pup sleeping on all the poo & pee Unsure... besides dogs are not as gross as many humans think they are... they are actually very civilized animals... they dun like to do their business at the same spot as they sleep... same goes for eating at the sleeping quaters if not a favourite either...

U are also rite... I dun think the pup will be too happy being caged up... the fenced up area can provide much needed space... it may be a lil messy the first few nites till ur pup get the toilet business under control... in the mean time u may like to lay newspapers on the fenced up area...

U may like to use a pet carrier as the sleeping quaters compared to wired cages... just a tot... a carrier is more practicle as it can be used when u need to bring the pup for holidays... attached are pictures of some carrier crate... these crates come is several sizes...

I hope what i have say helps... Wink all the best in getting ur new pup & caring for it... do keep us all informed about ur future furkid... Cool

thanz for de replies! so the fenced up area would be the better choice! the travel crate is a great idea too....will surely look into that! my future furkid would most likely be a silky terrier. top choice is actually aust terrier, but not many of this breed around....correct me if i'm wrong! Smile i'm also looking for a silky terrier handbook, but couldn't find any at Popular nor MPH. anyone knows where i can get hold of one? tq.

Fence is better cs the dog will have more space to move just like my silky. But the dog wont bark, oni kept quiet if nothing happens

Hi dizliz,

You have certainly received alot of great advise. I just to give you my tuppence worth or 2 cents worth. Toy dogs, are particularly difficult, why, because were bred to be like that and some where along the line owners have forgotten that they are dogs. Sometimes you can see toy dogs in obedience competition and these are the dogs the owners have reminded them as dogs. Fence up area is the best. Your little puppy, do pick him up but when it comes to socialising with bigger dogs do let him do it, try not to pick it up. Just picture this, when you are small your mum or dad would pick you up from strangers to protect you, can you honestly see that happening when you are in your twenties or even late teens.

Dog is the same, walk him. teach him to heel well and trust me you will one very lovely and good dog.

u will be a good owner, as u did so many surveys before actually bringing back the pup.

but actually after the pup had been toilet train, it would be unlikely that he/she will pee or poo in her own fence/cage.

eventhough sometimes i woke up late in the morning, sometimes 10 or 11. my dog won't pee or poo in her fence until i let her out in the garden.

its probably becoz she hates to smell her own poo.

Re: [Amanda85] Cage or fence? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi amanda85, do u mean that it's not a very good idea to hv pup's sleeping basket at one corner & it's toilet (newspaper tray) at the other corner within fenced up area? (btw, this fenced up area will be opened up for pup to get in & out freely during daytime).

should i just use a cage instead? that means during the night, when i lock it in the cage, it'll probably pee & poo in there, right? esp 1st night when it's not entirely toilet trained yet. is it ok if i just let this happen until such a time when it knows what to do? Crazy hmm...hope not confusing anyone. maybe i'm de one a little muddled up!!Tongue

anyway, i think this depends on de pup itself....some adapt & learn faster than others, right? hope my future pup will be a smart little furkid!!

if the fence up area of open all time for the pup to be in and out. (i suppose it will not exceed 100 meter sqaure)

the pup will probably not choose to pee and poo in his own sleeping place

if you really want to train you pup to pee on the paper in his own fence up area, it would be a difficult task.

and if u succeed, ur pup will be prob upset. and will not choose to sleep there

coz dogs also know about hygeine
