Groovy tricks Can't Post

Outdoor tricks dat Groovy is usually capable of doing ven tempted with his fav ball:

High 5 - say ‘give me 5’ with an opened palm n he’ll lift his right paw above shoulder level 2 swipe palm.

Sit up on 2 - say ‘sit up’ with my thumb held above his head n he is sitting pretty on his bum with his 2 fore legs in d air in front of chest. High 5 can b included for added impact.

Roll over - point finger 2 ground n lean towards 1 direction n he’ll perform a really quick roll, blink n u’ll miss it.

Take a bow - say ‘bow’ n he’ll get in2 a play like pose…fore legs down n stretched out with hind legs n bum in d air n tail wagging.

Circle round - command ‘round’ with my hands around waist n he’ll den move in a circle around me.

Thru d legs - say ‘thru’ with my fingers pointing between legs n he’ll run through my legs n appear in front.

Who’s d boss - say ‘who’s d boss’, standing with my legs slightly apart n he’ll move 2 sit in between my legs n look up at me.

Leg weave - command ‘twist’ or ‘weave’ n he’ll weave in between my legs as I walk forwards…n walk backwards as well, backwards requiring more practice.

Figure of 8 weave - say ‘8’ whilst standing stationary with my legs wide he’ll b running around my right n left legs in a figure of 8 manner.

Spinning left/right - say ‘turn’ or ‘twirl’ with a flick of my hand 2 left or right n he’ll turn/ spin clockwise n counter clockwise according 2 direction of hand.

Spinning on d bum - weird move performed only ven he’s really excited, a mixture of spinning n roll over performed really fast, so much so dat it looks like he’s spinning on his bum??!

Go forward n gostan - command ‘forward n reverse’ with my fist held forward n moving back n he’ll move accordingly… 2 d front, reversing through my legs n coming up 2 d front again.

Jump thru arms - with my arm bent 2 make a circle by side of body, command ‘jump’ n he’ll leap thru d ‘hoop’.

Jump in2 arms/ chest - say ‘jump’ with fingers pointing towards my chest n he‘ll leap in2 me…get ready 2 catch a flying mutt!

Frisbee/ ball catching n retrieving - depending on d weather, he’ll jump n catch thrown frisbee/ ball up to 3 ½ feet high n will bring dem back if he feels like it.

Indoor tricks, well hv 2 think of some…Groovy, ‘I can b quite tricky…especially with tricks.’

Re: [Sydney] Groovy tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

Dis puppy can b a real monkey at times, hence his affiliation with being tricky. Groovy is already 1 ½ years old n he learnt most of d stuff between 6-12 mths old. U hv an Oz Silky, a fairly mischievous n playful dog too. How old is he? Wat tricks does he do so far? 4 learning tricks, there r no age limits really. Dont underestimate ur dog’s ability 2 learn as long as u r willing 2 teach…d only restrictions here r d owner’s available time n degree of patience.

As mentioned in other threads below, need 2 experiment n figure out his fav treat/toy. If he’s small n playful, den most likely he’s in2 toys. Use d toy only 4 play/training n item shld b kept aside once finished. With a fav treat/toy, it becomes easier 2 get his attention n motivate him 2 perform eg.

4 ‘Who’s d boss’, give d command n hand signal den lure him with toy 2 move n sit/stand between ur legs. Once achieved, he’ll automatically look up at u if u r holding his fav toy. Hold d position 4 awhile, den praise n play/treat. Very important dat d command n hand signal r always consistent.

Tricks can b taught anytime anywhere…b4 d start of play, b4 u give a toy or b4 u give a treat. Most importantly, need 2 incorporate playtime in between tricks sessions 2 keep him inspired. Groovy’s fav toy r balls of all sizes n after each trick session, v play fetch with him so d ball doubles up as a training n play toy. Ven ur dog knows there’s play involved, he’ll b more eager 2 please. Other toys u can use r ropes, frisbees, Kongs, soft toys.

Usual tips apply: b consistent, patient n lots of praise even if it means acting funny in public.

Groovy, ‘Trick or treat?’

Re: [Sydney] Groovy tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

Sidney already knows d basic tricks n I’m sure he can move on2 d trickier stuff with some practice. If he likes snacks, den get him 2 learn/perform b4 giving out his fav snack. Ur level of excitement n praise also goes a long way in inspiring him 2 work with u. I’ve used treats b4 with Groovy n it works quite well, although we later found out dat he goes ‘cuckoo’ over his ball…so v use mostly toys nowadays, with some treats in between.

2 get his attention, hold fav snack in ur fist, place fist under ur chin, say ‘Watch me’ n try 2 make eye contact. Ven u hv his attention, also train him 2 focus on ur hands by moving ur open palm left n right, up n down, whilst holding d treat between ur thumb n palm.

Try d ‘who’s d boss’ n ‘leg weaving’ tricks with his fav snack as he’s likely 2 follow d snack ven placed in ur hands as u move ur hands between ur legs.

'Kongs' r hard rubber cone shaped toys with a hole in d middle. U can place treats in2 d hole n ur dog has 2 work a little 2 get d treat out. It’s actually a chew/nibble toy 2 keep ur dog occupied ven by himself.

What is d ‘open leg ven down’ move? Sounds quite flashy n indecent. Is it ok 2 b performed in public?

Groovy, ‘Trick or treat?’

Any leg will do. One problem is he doesnt folow the snacks he pounce on itMad so bad. I nid a suggestion solving this

Re: [Sydney] Groovy tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

He’s still a pup, so he’s allowed 2 hv a short span of attention. Let him hv a sniff of his fav snack 1st b4 placing in2 ur fist n below ur chin/ nose. 2 retain his attention, u’ll need a really, really, really enticing snack or perhaps switch 2 a fav toy/ball.

There shld b 1 toy dat he really likes n if u play with dat toy energetically n enthusiastically n consistently each day, he’ll show much interest whenever toy is brought out. May hv 2 incorporate some running, chasing, fetching n tugging play with toy 2 get him excited. Remember 2 keep toy aside once finished. Training/tricks sessions shld b kept short (3-5 attempts is good enof), mixed with a great deal of play n praise.

Slight pouncing/jumping 4 snacks is ok as long as he doesnt nip. Shows dat he’s really interested in ur snack. If he pounces too often, ask him 2 steady, sit or down. Keep him moving 2 d desired position n reward once performed.

Another way of teaching d ‘who’s d boss’ trick is 2 make him sit n stay n walk a few steps in front of him. With ur dog behind u, give a hand signal (snap ur fingers between ur legs) n give command, show d snack between ur legs n entice him 2 come n stand/sit in between ur feet n look up towards u.

Is Sidney an active/ playful type of terrier with energy 2 burn?

Groovy, ‘My boss keeps asking ‘Who’s d boss?’…but dey never ask ‘Who’s d real boss?’

Re: [Sydney] Groovy tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

Like Sidney, Groovy also doesnt perform tricks just 2 pls us, he does it 4 his ball/playtime. Terriers r hardy n independent dogs n just dont c d point in pleasing any1, except ven there’s play/ treats involved. U need 2 motivate dem n patience is key.

Unless u hv a Lab/GR n its 2nd nature 4 dem. Some dogs work better with praise, some with snacks n some with play. Some dogs r natural clowns n dey perform better in front of a crowd…a number of terriers fall in2 dis category.

Groovy (JRT), ‘I can b quite tricky…especially with tricks.’

Groovy, JRT, well behaved…u r just too kind.Angelic

U’ve him in action, he goes nutty ven he sees his ball, goes nutty ven he sees d jungle stream. Ven younger, he has even murdered d home sofa which eventually had 2 b replaced. Instead of sacrificing anymore furniture, we’ve chosen d cheaper option of giving him enof exercise, play n toys 2 keep d busybody busy n stimulated. It’s like no choice lor.

But v r not complaining, keeps us fit n outdoors more often. Dats why I’m always trying 2 find new ways of keeping dogs occupied or entertained as u nicely put it. Yup, n v thot dat ven v got a dog, v were d 1s who were supposed 2 b entertained rather den doing d entertaining!

Mayb a Basset Hd wld b a good change…

Groovy, ‘Give me a lifetime of adventure n I’ll gv u an adventure of a lifetime.’

dogs can be bored when the training goes for too long. keep it nice and short for like 10 minutes. reward plentily...change the routine too otherwise it'll be like your piano teacher asking you to play the same tune again and again and again and again and again.....

the dummies book is not too bad....quite interesting. perhaps you could pop into mph at mv....they have quite some interesting books.

Think it was d Starbucks aircond n his nap time anyway which contributed 2 his calm demeanour dat Sunday afternoon. Well his recall is a bit iffy, only works ven he sees his ball.Tongue

Yup, it’s a dog’s world alrite. Despite all d attention n training v gv our dogs, it’s a 2 way thing n there’s a lot 2 b learnt from dem as well. Hv read dis book, ‘Dogs dont bark, ven a growl will do’ filled with short stories bout wat our dogs can teach us, if v only cared 2 look eg. dogs dont get stuck in d negative.

Groovy believes dat d title of ‘Dog’s Best Friend’ for d mth should go 2 u seeing ur great devotion n passion 4 dogs. Cool n congratulations.

Wld b even better if v can get together n set up a booth on dog tricks which can den contribute 2 d cause on d Paws Day. Something simple like buskers on d streets with a hat in d middle 4 collecting donations. However, d red tape involved may just b too taxing…u know how local organizations operate lah.

Actually, earlier on d day, Ppycom arranged an impromptu trick demo/comp while awaiting d start of proceedings. Besides Groovy, only 1 other dog showed up. D dog ate a treat from his paw n performed a rollover , whilst Groovy did his usual frenzied twists n turns. Shld hv gotten Roxy 2 join in d fun.
