big puppy problems Can't Post

i have a 4 month old old english mastiff pup who is lovely and very well behaved overall but i could do with a bit of help with a few things, i cannot get him to go up or down the stairs, i cannot get him to walk on the lead and lastly and maybe most important he is a very freindly and plassid dog but today 2 friends came round and my dog became very nervous of them ,going to the top part of the living room, within about 10 minutes he came to sit with the rest of us but started to growl at the visitors for no reason, which is worrying for us giving that he will grow into a very big dog and we really need him to be very freindly with ppl. he never bites or growls at me my wife or kids.

tho' mastiff will grow into a massive n huge guard dog, but i believe they can become a gentle one too if u train them mixing along well v human being rite from they r small.

i guess ur puppy is very proctective to his owner, tht's y he reacted tht way to your frens. mayb u can bring him out more often, mix v more frens (human or dogs)

donno if these sites can help or not?

Don't bring your puppy out mixing with other dogs, or your puppy may suffer from parvo virus and die in just 2 days. That's what happen to my previous Rottie puppy. Yes, your puppy needs socialisation with human now, maybe bring more friends home, rather than let your puppy exposed to deadly grass outside which is highly contagious with virus. You should be happy that your puppy starts showing some protective instintTongue, isn't that what you're looking for? that's the nature of English Mastiff. Nevertheless, correction and training play an important role during the growing up.

cheers,

yes u are right i do want him to be good guard dog but heres my problem, i have always had bullmastiffs i have had 4 of them in total now 2 of them were very aggresive to other dogs and to strangers coming into the house and we always had to put them out in the conservertory before opening the front doors so when we lost dexter our last bullmastiff we decided to try a different breed so we got a old english mastiff and they can go up to 20 stones in weight but we really really need him to be nice to other dogs and ppl so any advise to my first question is greatly appretiated. We are going to take him to dog training classes as soon as we can find a good one. i went to see one last weekend however it was dog chaos about 40 dogs and owners going nutz no one could hear a word the trainer was saying over the deafening noise of owners screaming and dogs barking. so still looking for advise.
