Lack of Confidence Can't Post

Hi All, I owned a Male Chihuahua who does not have any confidence with strangers. I bought him from a reputable Chihuahua beeder when he was six months old. It took about a month for him to come "near" me. The first moment he arrive home is straight to the cage. Now, he's very affectionate with me but very reserve with strangers. He will bark and bark at anybody or worst go to "hide" when strangers came. UnsureUnsure Anyone got any idea how to restore his confidence?? He is a very loving Chihuahua. Please help him. I've attached a picture of him.
Thanks & Regards,
Benny Lai.

Hi Benny,

My pp also once like that before. When I first brought him back, he just dare not walk out from the cage...I always encourage him to walk out but he still refused to step out...I personally think that you have to spend more time with him and to socialize him. Alert and scared to others or even environment is chi's typical character... bring him out more frequent to meet with friends (include kids as well) and dogs. Sometimes chi can be very aggressive towards kids as well. Let him mixed with them but have to be careful initially.

I suspect that he has been abused or not being socialise well during puppyhood. Now that he's already one year plus, would that still work??Unsure
Thanks & Regards,
Benny Lai.

Hi benny,

You need to socialise your furkid more do bring him out for walks, meeting people and doggies and the confidence will built in time. It might take a long while but its done step by step.

My mocha was a cat when met with strangers. She doesn't simply allow anyone to touch her but now after abt 1 yr + going out weekly with the jungle trekking kaki gang...she is ok (a little) being touch by certain ppl after the trekking. Its not 100 % perfect but its an improvement and she is not as scaredy cat as she used to be anymore.

Give it time, give more socialising with others doggies it will help. Trust me. Good luck ya !

cheers,
minglmy

Benny,
U basically cannot do anything beside socialize him. It might take longer time to have effect but slowly loh...bring him out more often and just make the trip as pleasant as possible and pls ensure no bad thing happen else he will be even more scare of going outside...
my pp also like that when I brought him out to friend's hse. He will scare and u can see his tail fall in between his back legs... he still like that when I bring him to new places now, he sometimes will even shiver, this is chi charater and hold him for a while and tell him is ok, the place is fine and awhile later he is ok liao...
Benny, be patient ya and Merry X'mas & Happy New Year to you and your 2 lovely chihuahuas...Frown

Hello Benny

When puppies are brought to home for the first time, they tend to be nervous/scared.. eventhough the cage is open, they do not dare to step out of the cage.. Although we have tried to bring them out, but they would still find their way, back into the cage...

They need time to familiarlize with all members of the family, so play with these puppies to make them use to everyone... And then only they will start to explore the house...

About barking, you should bring your dogs out to socialize with other dogs... Or, when a visitor comes, you can try ask the visitor, to give a treat to your chh/to play with the chh...

Hope this helps.....

Benny

You post reminds me of Brownie. He was a scary cat to all things and people and even car rides.

His past plays an important contributor. His past owner always chain him up and did not have any walks at all. So now after we adopt him, even to ask him to come into the house, he "tremble" and the first car ride got to pull him inside and he "tremble or shiver" . When he meets ppl, he turn his head away and i think his heart also drop lah. Now after three training sessions at puppy.com tmn desa and also all the morning/evening walks and socialising with other furkids and neighbours.. he is changed. Our neighbour who knows Brownie longer than us is surprised that Brownie has changed to become brave, obedient, cute, adorable. Now when we open the car door, he hops in fast, and he will greet ppl that he knows..wags his short tail, and make a funny squeeky sound and trots in and out of the house as he likes.

Perhaps you give your furkid sometime and mix with ppl and more love to him, he will be your most adorable furbabe.! Good luck and merry x'mas

Re: [Benny Lai] Lack of Confidence [In reply to] Can't Post

hey, my female six month old female rescued chihuahua does that 2. I think being in a cage n havin people looking, staring, n laughing at her while she was young makes her act that way. I tried bringin her 2 my shop 2 let her interact wit people, they give her treats when ever she lets them get near her. This build her confidents bit by bit.
