worst dog Can't Post

i have a male english cocker. didn't train him when he was young and he is about 2 years old now. we can never comb his hair nor cut his nail.he only cut his nail about twice a year when we send him for grooming.also he often bite us when we try to get something out from his mouth, he also jump and snatch food , he will bark at you when u scold him.guess we have pampered him too much when he was young.what can we do now to make him better?

hmm..the untrained dog, sorry but this is also your fault when he was younger. but no criticism here

i suggest you start from scratch, buy good treats and start with sit, stay, come. there is many threads here on training, so u can refer how. also i think he don't know what is his position in the family and also i think he is alpha dog and u r all his pack. u need to change that.

good luck.

Hi there...

He is not the "worst dog".. Dogs behaviour are shaped by their owners. To be outright honest, if you have a bad dog, it means that you have not done your job as a dog parent. Some people just take for granted obedience training and find themselve in a tough situation when their dog become a nuisance and uncontrollable. Subsequently, they give him up. This is really unfair to the dogs.... Please train him , otherwise, the situation will get worst to a point that you might just want to give him up for adoption.

English cockers needs a lot of attention and mental stimulation. As a matter of fact, all dogs do - just a matter of degree. If lack of those two, then, they will get into trouble.. Although English Cockers, by their temperament standard not considered as dominant dogs, given a chance to be the pack leader, they will take it. It's natural canine instinct. From now on, you might wanna feed him by hand for a while.. teach him do things before he gets affection & food. Make him sit before you pet him, if he jumps at you and snatch your food, say "NO" very firmly and give him a timeout right away... Make him sit & stay at a corner for 1 minute or so. At the age of two, he should be able to understand why he got a timeout..

Never be too harsh to an english cocker as it may destroy their natural merry and hapy temperament... You dont need too much force to train an English cocker.. Just be firm and CONSISTENT... You will also need to put in 10Xeffort and patience to train him since he has no idea what obedience is... Good luck!

thank you for all your advice.i'm starting to train him a little now.he knows how to sit.but he hardly obey to "NO".when he demand for something he will always bark and jump for it, he will ignore everything we say. in the end we will have to give him to stop all noise. is it wrong to give him everything he wants so easily ?

oh yes it's definetely bad to give everything he wants easily, this makes him think he is the alpha dog out of the pack. he has to understand you have the power and he will do as you say.

it will come slowly, nothing is going to happen overnight or over 3 days. hold a treat in your hand and make him sit, then tell him "look" and make sure eyes are on you (move the treat from your hand to the corner of your eye), if he jumps on you, turn your back on him and ignore. if he barks, move away from the room and ignore him. if he calms down, tell him to sit and bring the treat to your eye and say "look" if he does this calmly, treat him and praise him enthusiatically. do this at least twice a day for the next 2 - 3 weeks, depending on his level of understanding.

he has to understand the treat will come from your hand and he has to look at you before you give him the treat, and that with barking and jumping, he is not going to get any attention nor treat.

don't pet him when he jumps on you, ignore him. you want to highlight the positive things he does and ignore the bad things. when you say "NO" include a deep growl, this will affirm your position as the master.
