Help about my dog Can't Post

hi all,

i need some advises. my MS keeps barking my neighbour whenever they enter the house. they are malays and i know that they don't like it at all. i always take my puppy come in the house to avoid from barking at them but i hope she can stop bark at them.

somemore... whenever my friends or my family's friends come, she will bark fiercely. got any tips to make her be friendly with them? now i'm trying to make her more socialize.

Aaah ... Maybe the first thing is to accept that as a breed ... Min Schnauzers can be yappy dogs ... well, they are not the most quiet of dogs ... Tongue ... They make good little watchdogs, which means that they will bark ...

Trying to train any dog not to bark is not so easy ... it is afterall, a natural dog-thing ...

(A) You are right ... more socialisation will certainly help ... Socialisation will teach her to be less wary of people, and more accepting of strangers.

(B) You can also try to specifically recondition your dog's natural guarding instincts ... use the Search Function and check the threads using the words ... "conditioning" ... and ... "reconditioning" ... this topic has been discussed before, and there are threads giving tips on how one can go about trying to recondition a dog ...

(C) Alternatively, you can try distracting your dog ... Everytime she starts to bark (or even better, just before she starts to bark) distract her with a command ... like ... "Sit" or do a "Recall" ... and if she responds without barking ... give her lots of praise & treats ...

If she understands the command "NO" ... then you can try that command too. And again, if she obeys the command NO and remains quiet ... lots of praise & treats ...

This requires lots of time, patience and consistency ... repeat again and again ...

Basically ... it's teaching your dog to associate people in general with "good" things ... which will (hopefully) reduce the tendency to bark.

Just a note: Shouting repeatedly at a dog to stop barking usually does not help ... if we shout at the dog, the dog simply thinks we are jointing in the barking ... and that can encourage the dog to bark even more ...

Cheers

Re: [surchinmy] Help about my dog [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

thanks for the advice. actually she's a very good watchdog. although a little sound that distract her, she will wake up and search where the sound comes from. i don't mind if she barks but the problem definitely my neighbour. i scare that they don't like her until one day they might simply throw a food with poison to give my dog eat and died. maybe you thought that they don't dare to do it but they will. last time they killed a cocker spaniel that went into their house. last time i saw them scold my ECS and sometimes pour coffee on m dog. and they did complain to mpsj about my dogs. so i scare this time will happen again. actually my dog bark is because their house's gate broke into half and they always need to carry the gate when they open the gate. hope u get what i mean.Unsure then the noise of their so called gate distracted my dog and then bark lor.

today i brought my dog to meet my friend and her dog. at first she did bark but then when my friend sayang her then she's ok and very friend with her. hehehe... then when meet her dog that time. i think her dog is more afraid than my dog. but no fighting and wrestling. and sit together somemore. hehehehe.... so it's not my dog's problem when bark.Tongue
