Hello ... Just some thoughts ... Wild dogs in their natural habitat, will by and large live in dens ... be it little caves, hidey-holes in bushes etc ... and such like. Even today, this instinct to "den" remains strong. If you observe strays, you will find them resting & sleeping, in/under culverts and den-like structures ... that's where they feel safe ... This instinct is also quite strong in pet dogs. Watch any pregnant dog preparing to give birth ... and you will see the bitch start looking under beds, behind cupboards or a quiet corner to "den" and have her babies ... Crate-training - is premised on this basic instinct ... Especially for owners with limited space, it is good idea to "crate-train" your dog ... Proper crating of a dog is not cruel (with emphasis on the word "proper"). Crating is not for punishment, and proper crating technique enhances and uses a dog's natural instinct to den, to teach the dog that its crate is a safe place for it to rest ... In fact, once proper crate training is taught, the crate should NEVER used as a form of punishment. Using a crate as a form of punishment contradicts the concept that a crate is a safe haven, a place for sleep & rest. But that said ... it is EQUALLY IMPORTANT that crating must NEVER be abused ... and a dog should NEVER be crated for long periods, without access to water, opportunity to leave the crate to pee & poop ... to stretch its legs, run & play. Get hold of any good dog training manual ... and you will usually find a chapter on how to correctly use a crate, and how to effectively and properly carry out crate-training. In the meantime use the Search Function and check "crate" and "crating". This topic has been discussed before. If you need to leave your dog alone in the house for more than a few hours ... then don't use a crate, but use a dog/puppy pen instead ... Arrange the pen such that the dog has access to its place of elimination ... and remember to leave a bowl of clean water for the dog. Cheers
