Training is essential and crutial for a beagle during week 12 to week 20.
Get CoCo some chewable toys. you may get those durable type as for dental purpose also.... but a bit pricy.
if you tend to cage her, u must leave her alone in the cage and not to release her when she make noise. But at the early stage, release her atfer u cage her for a short while (not when she makes noice, ok?), so to let her know u cage her, but u'll release her in real soon too. let her get used to the cage, and don't make her feel isolated/lonely being in it.
Once she's OK to stay inside the cage, then you may try to cage her longer. can use the cage for potty-train also... but dun cage her too long. Puppy's bladder cannot hold for too long. you have to release her regularly. About every 2 hours, for her "business"~Tongue

Thank you so much for the advise. I'll try it on Coco. But each time when I tried to cage her, she would make noise until myself also cannot tahan. I m afraid the neighbour would complaint only...CrazyPirate

I did got her some chewable toys but she only play for awhile and then she would actually turn her interest on us again... Pirate Now she know where to do her pee pee but not poo poo. This is very weird...!! Why is that so, ha? Lots more to learn on how to handle a hunting dog....

Re: [Concorn] Beagle Behaviour & Attitude!! [In reply to] Can't Post

when u cage her.... try to stay away from her, or leave the cage in a room itself. When she's not seeing you, she may stop making noice.
Think about this..... kid will only cry when there's an adult ( most of the caseSmile).
Say after 5-10 minutes, you back to the room and release her form the cage. Then try again... slowly increase the time length to 20-30 minutes long.

What i've tried on Bean before was.... i made him to did something which is wrong, such as biting, then i scold him... chase him... when i chase him, i "force" direct him to get into the cage and ONCE he's into the cage, i STOP scolding/punishing.... so to let him have this secure & safety feeling of being in the cage.

Hey all,

I dunno if what I'm doing is ritebut I do use the cage as a punishment, when he refuses to stop biting ppl even when given toys to play with. My Toby howls/wails really loudly and will only stop after mins ( and that's the quickest). More often than not he'll go on till he's tired and goes to sleep.

Guess most pups are like that, they don't like to be caged. Maybe we should try putting their favourite chewy when we cage them. Think I'll try that. We found somestuff called Greenies, which are green coloured chewies for good teeth and breadth. Toby loves them vey much. Of cos can't giv them everyday. Expensive also - RM3.80 each. Sold at EPt Safari.

You should try them out.

thanx for the advise.. Coco doesn't like to b caged. She would bark n make noise. Very noisy. I can't cage her at all. Too noisy, nanti neighbour complaint then there she goes. Had been giving her treats n new toyz but she still insisted to make us her prey lor...

Now, my whole hand and leg is full of bruises b'cos of her...PiratePirate Thought taking a female one, is much easier to teach. but turn out....hmmmmmmmmm...

Looks like we've all got the same problem. How old is Coco? My Toby is 9 weeks old now. A little under weight so we're feeding him a little extra to get him to the right weight.

if i remember correctly by 12wks old can enrol. gotta check with mka. also gotta find out when they're starting. it's alotta hard work n don't expect it to work out all the time but it'll pay off in the end when our little pups become smart n obedient.

their only form of communication is biting n barking. biting is also their form of play, just gotta make them understand what they should not bite.

Hi,

Ya lor. Biting n barking.. but sometimes Coco would be like mad running around, biting with full of her energy but later when I tried to calm her down it would take some time. lor.... tiring too.

Does ur beagle bark continuatiously? Or suddenly playing nicely then she would be so anxious n bite u so hard? Hope u understand wat m supposed to ask u!!!

Hi Concorn, yes Beagles are full af energy and sometimes can take a while to settle down. If you dont tire them out they will tire you out. But they are really fun.

But no, biting and barking continouosly is not a characteristic of this breed. My Picnic went through a nippy patch but she has learnt that biting is not acceptable. Even after the battle is won I will stress it very firmly every time she gets any ideas. She also used to bark for attention but that has been phased out after 5 months training. So she is very much more steady now at 7 months old. Now Sparky is one cool Joe. I cant remember him trying to bite me and he hardly barks. Of course they will bark when there is a stranger at the gate. Sometimes they will bark when playing and that is fine. You may have to better understand your Coco to make things work but I am sure it can. Books on training are really helpful in that regard. Good luck,J

Keep an eye on Coco during playtime. Make sure play doesn't get out of hand and she gets too excited. They kinda 'lose-it' when they are too excited. Point is, you decide when playtime should stop. Right time to stop is just before Coco gets too excited.

Toby only barks continously when he's being locked in the cage or when he's not allowed to get into the house as a form of punishment. Right now we're caging him less and less. He knows how to stay in his cage after we scold him.

He also barks when he's playing with my gf's dogs (2 shih tzus). That's when he gets excited. He gives me a nip everytime I see him after work. As a puppy of cos he still bites all the time but he knows how to listen when we say NO. Normally we'll play with him or he'll play with the other dogs till he's tired and he'll rest.

Was teaching him how to sit stay over the weekend. That's just to keep him from jumping all over me when there's food. But tried to get him to stay when I put the food down on the floor was impossible!

Have you tried anything with Coco?

But i dun tend to crate him as punishment although i did that before.... ya... gone mad at him and i myself went unreasonable...Crazy
but when he wanna be alone, he will get into the crate. coz that's HIS PLACE.

Beagles are all passionate! aint they?Wink

Yeah now Toby knows how to go into the crate himself as well. I guess if we force him less, he'll get use to the place on his own. Stubborness aside, they are lovely pets.

Yeah!! Coco gets too excited n start to bark n run amok when playing time. of course after sometime. So we would jz actually stop the playtime and avoid her. So she would calm down n rest.!!Pirate

They actually what is "NO". but still wanted to b notty. Tat's their character to test our patience. I guessed.!!

Me too here. Teaching Coco to sit stay. Only can stay for few sec if the treats is still on my hand. if put on the floor, no way man Coco will sit . She'll find a way, make noise n steal the treats. Clever girl, huh!!

I think ur beagle is bout the same age with mine. Still young to resist the food placed on the floor.

I have just bought a beagle, a 2 months old male. Everytime it poo in the cage, the poo wil surely drop out off the cage.. I am not sure whether that is it pooing at a spot that the poo can drop out of the cage, because beagles matters hygienes. And i am not sure whether should i train it the newspaper way or the toilet way...

Which would be better?

I wanted to let my pup go out and play in the house, but i am afraid it pee and poo everywhere. And it loves to bite my carpet..

Re: [MisterStan] Beagle Behaviour & Attitude!! [In reply to] Can't Post

hi Stanley, how is the toilet training with your puppy progressing? Anyway, what is your doggie's name?

Perhaps you might want to rearrange things to allow your puppy to eliminate outside his crate. What I did was to leave the crate inside a slightly larger fenced area so the puppies can sleep inside the crate and do their business outside. That would be a step in the right direction to a toilet trained doggie.

Get a training manual. Most give good descriptions and explainations. There is also lots discussed on this forum. Then come back for the fine tuning. Be prepared to be very patient cos your Beagle's bowels wont be reliable until they are 1YO. You will definately be a better person for the experience, hahaha.

Biting your carpet? He would be biting everything. You have to supervise your doggie when you let him roam the house. And get him some chew toys to focus on instead. Beagles are really fun, really. Best regards,J

jaytan,

we name him henry.... now he poo in the cage compared to last time he poo outside the cage. and before and after he poo and pee, he would bark. i think he wants to let us know that he done his business. showering him is little difficult because he won't sit and stand still, need 2 person to shower him.... i might buy those fence and fence around him..... anyone know where can i buy those fence??he started to bit my family.... from hands to legs... I would scold him if he bite me... a polite scold....

i have bought bones (flavoured) for him to bite... if i use your method of putting fences around the crate, not sure if he still poo in cage or outside... and he seem to sniff at poo/pee. he shall eat those poo and drink pee if i dont clean it fast. wonder is it because he is hungry..

i was hoping to meet any of the beagle owners to share experience and seek advice/tutor... Hope to learn from you also. Thanks jay...

Re: [MisterStan] Beagle Behaviour & Attitude!! [In reply to] Can't Post

hi stanley,

where to toilet train your pup depends very much on the surrounding he lives in. U Must carefully choose a proper place for him to do the business and try not to change it too much after that. If u plan to keep ur beagle inside the house most of the time i suggest you show him to the toilet and make him understand that's the correct place by praising him exuberantly when he does the right thing. Pups show signs when they want to pee or poo. So during his first few weeks at your home you should observe closely his behaviour. Most pups sniff around places and tend to spin about looking for a spot when they are about to do their business. So look for these signs especially after they awake from sleep or finished eating or drinking. Bring them to the desired place and wait for them to do the business and praise them after that but try not to look at them as they do their business cos they might not do until left alone. so just watch them from far will do. Everytime ur pup pee or poo at the wrong place u must scold him strictly and not softly so that he gets ur meaning and u should point his nose to the mess and bring him to the right spot after that. If u plan to let him do the business in a crate i suggest u buy another crate specially for him to do business cos he wont like to sleep in the crate where he does his business there. so make sure ur crate is big enuff to fit him as he grows up. Its either a crate or directly in the toilet so that it's easy for u to clean up after that unless u have a garden that u can let him loose there to do business at frequent intervals in a day.

Your pup should not be brought outside until he is 4 months old or at least not before he finishes his 3 jabs of vaccination. However u must try to find opportunity to socialise ur pup with other dogs. You can hold them to get along with a neighbour's dog that u r sure that dog is not sick. Try to bring them to friend's house and let other ppl play with him but u must be careful not to let him bite. try to hit his nose softly whenever he bites and show your angry face or shout at him. A male beagle is very egoistic and most likely he will ignore u but once he knows that it's not fun to make u angry he will obey u...just like my case..haha...my beagle is now under my control after i express my dominance over him clearly. Socialising ur pup is the most important thing in his early stages of life. Bring him out to experience new things after his vaccinations and let him smell and hear anything he wants but of course under ur supervision. when he is 4 months old try to bring him outdoor more as he will need alot of exercise. Let him mix around with other dogs but not sick dogs. A socialised dog will grow up to be an obedient dog, otherwise a nuisance to ur family.
