Hi Colin

Welcome to the Forum! It is not that easy to adopt a GSD and even if you can you need to know that they have either been abandoned by their owners or have been abused. Not easy to care for such a poor creature.

Better to buy a puppy from a good breeder. If you are interested in a GSD pup, I can recommend you a friend who still have 1-2 pups left for sale. Let me know. Cheers!

thank you for the infor. but, i have not owned a GSD except my dad and uncles but it was too long ago. and i need infors about this breed as well as the breeders concerned.

i hope to get a working line breed dor home protection. by the way, how u got yours for ? u did the right thing by checking out the sire and dam first.

. GSDs are beautiful and noble dogs, but they require firm handling. They are very intelligent, and need mental stimulation (e.g. training, or a "job" such as agility or herding) to keep them from becoming bored (When bored, they might do destructive things). I doubt you'll be able to find a purebred GSD at a shelter. Most of them are mix-GSDs. I suggest checking out local breeders.

Hi colin

GSD is a very loyal and obedient dog if trained properly. Since it is a large breed dog, you will need the space for him/her to exercise, move around etc. It is also not cheap to maintain a GSD so you will have to consider all these points before deciding.

GSD is a noble animal, fiercely protective of its owner and property and also good with other people and children. They however need lots of physical and mental exercise so time and commitment is also a prerequisite for would-be owners.

I got mine off a friend who breeds pups responsibly and I had a chance to look at the mom and dad closely and even played with them. They were of good temperament and bloodline. While I am not guaranteed a champion pup at least I have confidence that she will grow up to be a good and obedient dog.

If you want, I can find out for you if the 2 pups are still avaibale or not.

by the way, how do identify a good breeder and do you have a list of the breeder ? what is the price range ?

my uncle suggests that alternatively i should get a doberman.

if u don't mind telling how much u got yours for.

i have a question in mind is that how do u know that sire is the father od the litters ? just trying to get some knowledge of it.

i would prefer to be the first to choose a puppy from the litters so as to enable me to make a sound selection.

by the way, have u heard of a breeder in Miri who breeds working line GSD ? u can check it out at www.911k9.com.

Hi Colin

I do not have a list of GSD breeders, unfortunately. In Malaysia, we rely on newspaper ads and or friend's contacts.

A good breeder is one who allows the bitch to rest for one heat cycle before allowing her to mate again. This is being responsible and puppies from such breeders are always healthier.

A good breeder allows you to see the dam and if possible the sire as well.

A good breeder will not sell his puppies without first finding out which prospestive home his pup is going to. He wants to know if you have the space/garden to exercise the dog etc.

A good breeder tries to answer all your questions about the parents' history, the pups' behaviour and also will not hide any negative predispositions of the pup you are about to buy.

A good breeder will have given the required innoculations and provide you the pup's medical records.

These are the basic traits of a good and responsible breeder.

As for the price, it can range from a minimum of RM1200 all the way up to RM5000 and above.

Sorry, didn't see your second post!

I got mine for RM1700. The breeder must show you the original certificate by MKA of both the sire and dam (in my case, a SV cert.for the sire which is from Germany). If the cert. shows that there is a tattoo no. then you can see that no. on the dog's ear. Otherwise, if microchip is used, then you need to trust that the breeder is telling the truth.

The pup is too small to obtain its own cert. normally after 5 months, it will get its own and from there you can check whether the parents' names correspond with the sire and dam's cert. shown to you earlier.

If you want to have first choice, then be prepared to pay more. Good luck!

I purchased my GSD for $1300. We can never be 100% sure if the dog we're being shown is the right sire. I guess we have to use our instincts and trust the breeder. If the breeder seems quite reputable and fits the criteria of what has been listed above, then you can safely assume that it's the right sire.

In my experience, the Doberman is more suitable for relatively new dog owners. My GSD was really hyperactive, and her coat needed daily brushing to mantain (not to mention the amount of shedding she did!). My Doberman, on the other hand is more laid-back, and her coat is so much easier to take care of. But both require a lot of exercise! The GSD requires slightly more firm handling.

Anyway, keep us updated with your "quest" for a dog Wink

. Both breeds are excellent, in my opinion, so it depends on your individual preference.

hi pyromaniac,

dobe is fine with me as well as i used to had one before for 2 years when i was in primary school. had to give it away when we moved.

from the reports and articles that i had read thus far have indicate that dobe is a more aggressive dog (a better guard dog) and requires a more firmer discipline training.

dobe also requires more exercise than a gsd per se. i had just started my research on these 2 breeds as well as a bit on belgium malinois. i just want to get to the ideal dog as near as possible base on my research and infors gather.

i believe that a good breed of dobe is hard to come by nowadays and do u know the price range as well ? i went to mka dog show in june this year at foon yew high school, johor bahru this year. showed this owner with 4 dobes there, nice built but did not manage to get his name and contact no. anyway, he was from kuala lumpur.

Unfortunately, Rottweilers and Dobermans have been potrayed as aggresive dogs. The truth is, the dogs would never have attacked if they had not been provoked or raised properly. I guess my Doberman turned out so laid-back because we raised her in a family environment. She grew up with my brother (who was about a year old at the time) pulling her ears etc., so she tolerates kids very well.

I find the Doberman more protective of her family when compared to the GSD. My Dobe was not trained as a guard dog, but she instinctively becomes protective when we are out, especially at night. There have been many times when a stranger starts to come towards us but changes his mind when she growls. In the daytime though, she is friendlier. But the GSD also becomes alert when strangers approach although she doesn't growl.

Mr Derrick told me of a reputable Dobe breeder in Taman Sea a while ago. If you contact him, maybe he'll give you the details. As for the price range, I'm afraid I don't know. My Dobe cost $900, but that was 8 years ago, so it's not a good indication of the price range now.
