Re: [hllim] bark, bath, odour, help!

Hi hllim,

1.) your puppy may be just unused to the new environment. Where do you keep him at night? Let him settle first. But still it is a good idea to start training him. do a search in this forum. The barking behavior has been discussed in several previous threads already. Try those ideas first.

2.) what sort of puppy do you have? long hair or short hair variety? you should bath dogs at the most...once a week. 2 or 3 bath weekly is not a good idea, you are depleting him of his natural body oils and can create skin problems. Go Check your puppies skin. If everything is alright, to look for shampoos & deodorizers for puppies. Otherwise, your puppy may have skin problems and it is best to let the vet have a look.

do a search hllim, all your questions have been asked and answered many times in this forum....Smile

Re: [hllim] bark, bath, odour, help!

Hi there.....

1) Bathing - According to the vet that I go to, a pup that small should bathe only once a week. If he has a bad smell, better check to see if his ears and teeth smell? Tongue I noticed that my pup's head smell really bad due to her ear wax.. So, cleaning it gently around the external part of the ear should help... Tongue

2) Barking and yelping - Hehe... This one I've recommended people and it seems to work. Let your pup listen to some music from the radio!! Trust me.. it works... Tongue I tried it out on my pup and now, she keeps quiet at night. Sometimes, when she is awake, she will listen to the music.. Laugh

However, if your pup is making noise, try to find out why the pup is making noise? Maybe he is telling you that a) I want to go out to do toilet b) I want some attention....

Don't worry, it will be a while before the pup settles down.. Just be patient... Tongue

Re: [hllim] bark, bath, odour, help!

Hi hllim!

First of all, is the smell coming from your puppy unbearable? Keep in mind that you'll never be able to get your pup to smell like a bed of roses all the time. Once a week is definitely enough for a puppy. The smell could be coming from the bathing process itself. Make sure you completely dry your pup after his bath (towel dry... using a hairdryer will damage his fur, and probably scare him!). If your pup is left slightly damp, he will smell bad later, no matter how good his shampoo smells!

As for barking and yelping, I must say that aragorn's idea was pretty ingenious! I should try it sometime, lol. I suppose that would work, because music is soothing for animals. I know horses benefit from a radio nearby Wink. However, it sounds like your pup's suffering from homesickness. Most new pups will make noise at night because they aren't used to the new environment. It's best to IGNORE him until he learns that barking and yelping will not get him anywhere. It's tough, I know, but trust me, he'll learn to settle in for the night within a few days. Patience is a must when it comes to puppies! Smile

Re: [hllim] bark, bath, odour, help!

my dog also tends to bark around 7 am, coz she wanted to pee.
but if you dog just barking without reason or just wanna some attention, try my method. (but i think this is for a more older dogs, not for puppy la... coz puppy need a few days to settle to their new environment. if your dog is still barking like that after 1 month, then only you apply this method)
a bit cruel la.... i try to threaten my dog by using a muzzle. whenever she start to bark for fun, i'll put on the muzzle and she'll starts to cry and become sad. then after around 15 minutes i'll release the muzzle and she remains quite.
when the next time she try to bark again, i'll show her the muzzle and probably she'll be scared of it and remains quite.
some dog may need to be muzzle for a few times to realize it.

about bathing the dog 2 to 3 times per week. it will be alright if you just bath the dog with just lukewarm water. and only use the shampoo once a week.

Re: [hllim] bark, bath, odour, help!

hi,not too sure whether i give good advises but msot of them are from experience.
one of the reason he barks is because he needs to pee.If he's inside a cage/crate and he usually does his peeing outside he'll bark because dogs who pee outside of their cage do not pee inside.Other than that he's jsut barking for u.U have to train him not to bark for no reasons should he bark just for attention. It's not easy to train him to be quiet and all when u really dont know the reaon why he's barking.
Yes u can bathe ur dog every 2-3 days but STRICTLY without water. They'll lose their natural body oil and it'll cause them to shed alot.Trustme.Rinsing them off with water is good enough as it rinses off debris and dust but it also keeps them slightly clean and they'll smell nicer. After a rinse get a doggy perfume and spray on them and they'll smell realyl good and it can last for a week!

Re: [hllim] bark, bath, odour, help!

Hello,

The others hv answered your questions well. Smile

I would like to add my 2 cents worth on bathing and deoderizing.

Bathing a pup or dog every 2-3 days is not good for it's skin or coat. Just like us humans, if we wash our hair too often, it will strip our hair of its natural oils. For the pup/dog, the oils are essential as it helps to deal with skin problems that may develop in future. Perhaps you could try adding a very mild natural oil of which the smell you like to some water and just wipe him with a damp/wet towel and dry him after that.
