Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi,

I owned a puppy, M Shcnauzer. I brought him home 3 months ago. I’m very headache with his hairy ear hole and his messy hair Crazy, especially the hair near his mouth and eyes. Even after combed his hair, a short while, the hair became disheveled again. Can anyone give me a simple advice how to groom a M Schnauzer. Many people advised me to bring him to dog saloon to clip his hair. Should I do so, or can I clip him myself?

I used to clean his ear hole using a cotton bar, and I suspected the cotton was stuck inside his ear hole. I brought him to veterinarian and the doctor told me that there is nothing inside his ear hole. But now his is just keep scratching his ear. What can I do ah .. (I have clean his ear hole every time after I bathing him). I'm very worry lah ……...

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

I have answered your initial question in another thread. Good thing you started this thread which is more to the point. We will keep our discussion here ok?

I understand you have a 3 month old male puppy. There are several ways you can approach to groom your schnauzer. If you decide to keep it as a pet, then you can go for the pet grooming which is basically using an electric clipper (with a #10 blade) to clip away the body hair. The legs furnishing, body fringe and of course the trademark eyebrows and beard should NOT be clipped away or else you wont end up with a schnauzer!

If you decide to show your puppy at the dog championship show, then do NOT clip anything. You will have the adopt the coat plucking/hand stripping method. It is best to start plucking the coat at about 4mths onwards. Plucking away the body hair in the same pattern as electric clipping described above will encourage the growth of the wiry outer coat so necessary for show dogs. Hand plucking the schnauzer coat is part art, part science.

So my tip is this..For Pet coat, take it to an experienced groomer who knows how to groom schnauzers. Ask around for recommendations, demand to see the photos of their work. I have heard too many horror stories from fellow schnauzer owners who literally screamed when they saw their schnauzers after the so called "grooming". Them eyebrows and muzzle whiskers (that are the trademark of schnauzers) takes a LONG time to grow back. After this initial grooming by the professional, you can then attempt to maintain this look yourself. We can discuss this later. Price for a pet schnauzer grooming session here in KL/PJ varies from RM60-RM120. This usually includes a bath, grooming, nail clipping, ear cleaning and hair plucking (The insides of a schnauzer's ear must be shaved bare and plucked cleaned)

Should you decide to show your dog, then ask around for groomers that know how to pluck/hand strip a schnauzer coat. This is the more time consuming and expensive approach as it involves several sessions (typically 4-5 weeks) However, the results are definetly worth it especially if your puppy is genetically blessed with a hard wiry coat. Maintaining this show coat requires time and dedication from your end. Typically, you will have to "roll" the coat every 2 weeks. There are lots of websites out there that shows this process beautifully. If you are interested, let me know. Smile

Hi Eliza,

Do check out the American Miniature Schnauzer Club website. It has excellent references to pet grooming. Also very informative is the illustrated slide show on the Miniature Schnauzer AKC breed standard. Point your browser to http://amsc.us/index.html

Hope the above info helps.

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hello

I am not sure whether hv you heard of the way to clean dog's ears by using alcohol?

Well, I heard of this way before and only recently I got the information on what type of this alcohol liquid that we can use to clean ears.

Alcohol topical type : isopropyl 70%

It helps in cleaning the ears and also kills the mites. Just drop a few drops in the ears and massage it. You can use a cotton bud to clean it too.

If there is any side effect that you know of (anyone??? ) pls share with me.

Thanks
Regards
Lisa

Re: [lisachew] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Lisachew,

Isoprophyl alcohol is also known as rubbing alcohol in the sports world. In the aviation industry where I work, we also use this to clean our electrical connectors. Pretty good stuff as it evaporates away without leaving much residue. Besides alcohol acts like an antibacterial sterilising agent. So it can be used as an ear cleaning solution. No side effects that I know of.

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi, Arthur,

I would like to say thanks first. The info from you is very useful for me. At this moment, I' think it's better for me to look for an experienced groomer, before I know more about how to groom a schnauzer. My puppy likes to play around at the small garden at the back of my house. After he enjoyed this wonderful moment, his body is full of dry leaves and covered with dusts. Some more his coat is quite thick. So, what I have to do now is to clip his thick coat away for easy cleaning. I understand that it is not easy to learn and very challenging, but I still very interested in grooming my cutie baby myself. May I know how long you spend to learn how to groom your schnauzers? For the grooming tools you mentioned, can we find it at any pet shop? Is it necessary to having all for grooming a schnauzer?

From the Magazine and TV, we can see that most of the schnauzer, their eyebrows and muzzle whiskers are really long, as you said, their trademark. But for my cutie baby … of cause, if compare with some other breeds, it's long, but if compare with the same breed, I think it's not long enough … is it because he is still YOUNG … (his is now 6 months old) …. Will it grow some more? One of the reasons why I mad with schnauzer is this special trademark. Ha ~~~ how if this wonderful trademark lost after back from grooming, ah ah ah …. I really cannot accept lah …… NIGHTMARE

I advised by MS Yeoh, our trainer, we have to clean our puppy's ear. What we can do is plucking the hair on his ear hole, I've tried, but he seems uncomfortable and ran away, it is due to pained.

Arthur, I think there are still many to learn from you about the schnauzer.

Thanks a lot.

Thank, Lisa. I'll send my puppy to the pet glooming, I hoped they will make his ear cleaned. I really don't know that alcohol can be used in cleaning the ears, because I though alcohol (not only alcohol, all the chemicals) is no good for the pets.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Elizatye,

You wrote..."May I know how long you spend to learn how to groom your schnauzers? For the grooming tools you mentioned, can we find it at any pet shop? Is it necessary to having all for grooming a schnauzer?" We are still in the learning process for Schnauzer grooming. Started about 6mths back. Still have a long way to really master the art! Crazy
As for the grooming equipment, yes! most pet shops especially the larger ones will carry the stuff. Easy to find are the slicker brushes (try to get the soft type), pin brush, metal comb (medium and fine teeth), ear powder and cleaner, hair pullers or hemostats, Kwik Stop Styptic Powder (To stop any accidental bleeding).

Harder to find will be the Andis or Oster clippers (Expensive! Starts from RM450 onwards), barber shears and thinning shears. For the shears, try to buy the best you can afford and get the longer ones (about 6-8inches). Prices start from RM70-Rm500!

For pet grooming, you'll definetly need at least the electric clipper, barber shears, thinning shears, metal combs, ear powder/cleaner, hair puller and slicker brushes.

For show grooming, all of the above plus stripping knives, mousse or hair gel.

Like I said, it's a challenging task but at the same time, very rewarding as well. Typically, we spend at least 3hrs per dog to groom them.

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

I had sent my puppy for grooming today, I brought him back to the pet shop where I bought him ……. Haaaai……. Can you imagined … a schnauzer with a only single large eyebrows Mad Crazy…….Haaaaaaaaai … But fortunately I met a very kind old lady, another pet shot assistance, assisted me to clip back the schnauzer look Cool. But the eyebrows became really short. What I have to do now is to maintain this look first.

Thanks and it is really a long list of the grooming tools. At this moment I only have the metal comb and the brushes, and, I am not sure the brush of mine is the one you mentioned Unimpressed.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

I felt so 'geram" after reading what the groomer did to your puppy. Luckily there was a kind soul who managed to restore the schnauzer look back for you. Maybe you have to be around the next time or better still, ask around for a good, proven groomer for schnauzers. The eyebrows will grow back eventually, maybe in 2-3months time.

Have you visited and d/loaded the excellent charts/drawings from the American Miniature Schnauzer Club website? Under the grooming pages, you'll see a picture of all the grooming equipment needed plus an printable picture of the correct offical grooming chart. Do take the time to check it out.

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Arthur,

I just started grooming my MS (previously brought her to groomers). Just like to ask you a few questions,
1. you mentioned size 10, but mine doesn't state the size, it just say 1.5mm, is it the same?

2. I can't clip the ear as short as the groomers (both inside and outside) so how can i do it?

3. Do you think it is advisable to go to a professional groomer to take up lesson? (I know of a place that charge RM300 for a 5 hours "how to groom your own dog" course)

Re: [ccsy98] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Ccsy98,

You asked..

"Q1. you mentioned size 10, but mine doesn't state the size, it just say 1.5mm, is it the same?"

A1. Yes, it's the same. #10 blade will leave hair 1.6mm in length. Generally, the larger the number, the shorter will the hair be eg. #40 blade leaves hair 0.25mm whereas #3 blade leaves 0.5inches.

2. I can't clip the ear as short as the groomers (both inside and outside) so how can i do it?

A2. Have you tried to clip going AGAINST the hair grain? This is how they achieve a close clip. Otherwise, you'll probably have to #15blade.

3. Do you think it is advisable to go to a professional groomer to take up lesson? (I know of a place that charge RM300 for a 5 hours "how to groom your own dog" course)

A3. If the groomer knows how to groom a schnauzer properly and you have seen his/her handiwork, then I suppose RM300 for 5hrs seems reasonable. Definetly worth it if they allow you to test on a live subject as well. The art of grooming does not only includes the grooming proper itself, you must be able to handle the dog properly especially the "difficult" ones who bites, won't stand still, etc...

Hope this helps. Rdgs Arthur

A few more question to ask. Smile How often should we groom our puppy? There are many large knots found on his hairs the time I brought him back and I was used the scissors to clip off all the knots. Is this the correct way? Or I should only have to brush off the knots by using the comb?

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

You asked "How often should we groom our puppy?" Ans: No fixed time as it is determined by how fast your puppy hair grows out. But generally, between 3-6weeks period.

You also asked "...used the scissors to clip off all the knots. Is this the correct way? Or I should only have to brush off the knots by using the comb?" Ans: Try using your hands to separate out the knots as much as possible followed by a comb with medium teeth. Remember to hold the fur close to the skin while you untangle the knot to prevent pain for your puppy. Sometimes using a mink oil spray helps to ease the knots by adding lubrication to the fur. If it's really hopeless, then only use a scissors to trim off the knot. Try to snip the knot lengthwise, do NOT cut across the fur. For further info, read the section on brushing from the AMSC website under pet grooming. Hope this helps.

Hi Eliza,

You are most welcome.Smile It's always a pleasure to help out another fellow mini schnauzer owner. Here's hoping your puppy's eyebrows will grow back to their original length soon! Another thing, it is not necessary to bath your puppy too often as this will result in their fur becoming very dry and frizzy. Once a week should be enough. (unless your puppy is super active and keeps getting into messy situations!Wink)

Re: [bingo] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Bingo,

So you are another schnauzer fans ah. Your puppy is very cute ah. Are you groomed him yourself. Your puppy's ears not only stand up firmly but also seem quite big and cute! You sure you didn’t cut it? Ei.. Somebody purposely sent their MS to vet to cut their ear, so that they will stand up loh! But I prefer let my puppy’s ear grow naturally lah!

I bought my puppy, yippi, from the pet shop 3 months ago, now he is already 6 ½ months old. His is a salt & pepper, male schnauzer. Before I bought him, I already knew about MS in the TV show. I knew that they are very playful and active. I also love his eyebrows and muzzle whiskers very much. That’s why at the first sight of him, I already decided to buy him back.

Good ah! So now you no need to train your puppy ah! I have to. Now yippi knew where to pee pee and poo poo, shake hands and sit. He is very greedy. He likes to eat human foods like bread, buns and … moon cake. Now he seems not so interested in his own dog food, except the biscuit, which he loved very much. Did you fed your puppy with fruit? I didn’t fed yippi with fruits but last week he 'curi makan' Crazy, completed almost a full fuji apple. Fortunately nothing happened to him, like plek plekkkk......Smile

I’m still quite new in Schnauzer. Mind to tell more about your puppy? How old is your puppy… what you feed him… what he love much… what he dislike… is he easy to bath … and etc. Where you bought him ah?

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

hi Eliza, nice to hear frm u ! By the way i did the grooming myself! cos i like to design the own pattern heheh!Smilenow i feed him on Eukanuba Lamb n Rice n i didnt give him fruits.. cos scared may be cirit-birit, n i used to give him Boiled eggs n a little sugar mixed with dog biscuits !! is good for fur n i think u shdnt pampered your puppy , give him only dog biscults , he will sure eat when he is hungry n give me the food , make sure he know that is his n eat when u give him , if he just ignore n thougt can have that meal anytime cos u put it there, so u sdh train him like once u give the food , he shd know he have to eat it n wont hanging around n playing, if he dun wanna eat, take it away ! then he will know , when u give him the food , he have to eat , stop playing!

i bought my boy frm breeder, where u used to know how to obey during bath , he wont jumping aorund when i m trying to dry him up! that is advantages of buying frm breeder, i saw that is one breeeder in penang, even teaching her male puppy schnauzer to pee n poo on paper! that puppy is only 2 months old! but unfortunately she dun have female, only have male , so i , actually love that boy so much , so broad the body structure n nice body! emmm may be no fate for me to bring him back!
so i think if u can ,snapped your puppy photo n u can post it here so u can show your puupy to us!!
Anway thanx for your reply Eliza n what brand of dog food u feed on him?

Hi Eliza,

Em....initialli Bonney was on Alpo (when she still with her parents), when i bought him back, i give pedigree, after a while and a little of research, i choose not to stick with this, and i move on to Eukanuba, at first she doesn;t seem to like it, but what to do, i gotta to hand feed her ever meal...heheheh manja too much, she was on Eukanuba for 2 15KG pack (about 2 months), but i still not very happy with this, so now i finally settle with the natural formulated kibble which doesn;t conitan BDH,BDT perservative that will eventuallu cause cancer for your furkids. So now i am about to change to Nutro Natural Choice with wil get rids of most of the _______by meal ingerdients. Innova will be in my list as well. I will try these two out one by one and see which fit Bonney best. Is up to her to choose anyway.

I will mixed with some milk (low fat milk) in the kibble if she don't feel like want to eat, for her dinner, i will either mixed with boiled chicken breast (boneless) or beef.

This make her happy enough to finish her meal in a reasonable amount of time.

Hope this help.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

By all means you can dry clean him. After a walk round the neighbourhood, I will brush out the dirt and other stuff that gets stuck in their fur especially the leg furnishings. After that, I wipe them with a damp cloth starting from the muzzle, body, legs and finally their paws. Another tip, after their meals, try to clean the beard with a tissue paper, ideally the big kitchen paper towels. Minis are clean doggies. If they smell, it's normally either from their ears, eyes or beard. Maintain the cleaniless of these 3 areas and you'll get rid of the smell. Twice a week, I also brush their teeth.

Hi Boon,
I never heard about these two brands of dog food before. Can it be find in Penang? I used to hand feed yippi too, ha ha ha! Sly You mix your puppy's kibble with milk. Is it for human or for doggie?
I'll try the boiled chicken breast way. Hope yippi will love it.

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Arthur and everyone who loves dogs....

The ear grooming went on real well, but I didn't clip it too near the skin, coz her ears are not like the breed standard (flat triangle), it's stick a bit high up, so I kept some of her hair to bring it down....

i tried clipping my mom's earings on her to bring the ears down but she didn't like it, so I gave up...(didn't know that her ears will turn up this way, or I would have brought her to the vet) but she look quite cute and alert now(has a effect of cropped ears)

And the pool, well she didn't quite like it, but she love the treats i threw into the pool for her to fetch!!!

Re: [stephee78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Everyone!

It seems that most puppies go through the stage of not eating their food. My Goofy also did that once for about a month....I tried everything from adding milk, rolled oat, cornflakes, a bit of sugar to make her eat....but no...she won't....so I took it away and feed her again at night....but she just eat a bit...started to worry and wanted to change her dog food....

But after a month....she started eating again....not just eat, she gobble her kibbles. Hmmmm....wonder why they refuse to eat?

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi,

I own a M schanuzer too, his is three months old, name Malcolm :):)

For the ear problem, i think should be ear mites, very common problem for puppy, you can bring him to se vet and they will advise you what to use. Malcolm have the same problem when he is 2 month old, took him about 2 weeks to recover, not too worry about it.

For grooming, i bring my Malcolm to grooming center once a week, to do the bathing, cleaning the ear, nail cutting and hair styling. I think malcolm hair style very easy to maintain, i only need to comb him once a day :):)

Hope i can slove some of your problem.

Hi Eliza,

During the days in between baths, before you brush the coat, apply the mink oil spray. Besides the cosmetic value, it also helps to prevent hair breakage and ease tangled knots. Use it when the fur is dry.

Hi Eliza!

You asked.."Is ear powder really necessary when we pluck our furkid's hair inside their ears?? What brand are you recommend?? " Using the ear powder will greatly help to get a good grip on the stray hairs so that when you pulled them out, it comes out nice and clean. Highly recommended and Yippi will thank you for it. Any type of ear powder out there should be good enough to do the job. If possible, take a small sample with your fingertips and rub them together. You should feel a good grip with nil slippage.

Yippi is such a good boy to let mama pluck his ears! Give him a treat from unc Arthur!Wink

I went to the petshop the otherday, and wanted to buy the powder, but instead, i was ask to purchase some form of liquid that was ask to be pumped into Jaz's ear after bathing.. leave it for a minute or two and then uses the cotton bud and clear her ears... does this sounds right to you? Eveytime i spray the liquid into her ears, she will go crazy as they do not like liquid to be in thier ears.. any advise?

I think the liquid and the powder both have different usage. The liquid is used to clean the ear hole and the powder is used when we pluck our furkid's hair inside the ear. But I am not so sure. Mrs Yeoh told me that the hair inside our furkid's ear should be pluck off if the ears are cover by the hairs. I am not sure that whether jaz's ear are cover with hair but yippi yes Crazy ... Hi, Stephanie,

You have to be very careful when you use the cotton bud to clean gary's ear. Don't let the cotton stuck into gary's ear loh. I used to do so TongueUnsure... Try to buy the cotton bud with good quality, although will be a bit expensive but it is worth.

I trained him to pee and poo in the crate too is b coz sometime the bath room's floor is very wet or occupied by someone, so he have to pee or poo in the crate. Hi, Ashley,

Umm... Actually I am not doing so well in bathing Yippi Unsure. I will bath his face too, but had read some articles that we should not let the water get in out furkid's eye, ear and nose. But I really don't know how to hahdle his loh... but I already try my best to be very careful while bathing his face.

Yes, I will pluck the hair inside yippi's ear. I have to do so, b coz there are many hairs cover over yippi's ear hole. Our trainer said that if we didn’t pluck the hair off then this would be a good living place for the mite or bacteria Crazy. I will pluck a small amount at once. I am not so sure about shih tzu, but I think it should be same for all the dog/pup. You better check that if heihei’s ear hole is cover over with hairs. If answer is yes, I think you have to do so too… Probably you have to ask for advice from the shih tzu professional.

Re: [ashley] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Ashley,

The liquid ear cleaners are used to clean out the wax buildup inside.(This is the smelly stuff..Yucks!) There are 2 ways to clean/remove the wax. One is by mechanical means using a cotton bud that is soak in a ear cleaner. As the dog's ear canal is not straight but rather like an L-shape with a right angle bend before reaching the eardrum, it is normally quite safe to use the cotton. Personally we do not use the cotton bud but rather we use an hemostat (kinda like a scissors but no cutting edges, instead it has a grip to pull hairs) We wrap the cotton around the hemostat tips and soak some ear cleaner or (frontline if we find ticks inside) to clean the insides of the ear.

Recently however during the grooming demo in Singapore, the groomer showed us her technique of cleanin ears using a liquid call Ear Zap. It is alcohol based so it evaporates completely away and really clean the ears. She uses a syringe and simply squirts in inside the ears several times to flush out the waxy residues. Simple and efficient.

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

now this is interesting..
  • Frontline, I've just start using it for my dog this week.. and what i did was just to pour it behind my dog's neck and leave it there.. is this correct? How long before the next application is needed and after applying it, how long before would you recommend to bath the dog?
  • Would it be harmful to soak the cotton with frontline and clean our dog's ear?
  • Where do we usually purchase the hemostat from as I agree that cleaning the dog's ear is not very easy and visible.
  • The pet shop owner asked me to spray the liquid directly to my dog's ear and leave it there before cleaning, my dog got really irritated and i suppose this is not a good thing to do, right? As i wouldn't like someone spraying liquid directly into my ears as well!
  • Jaz is a silky terrier and i simply don't see much hair in her ears, so i suppose plucking them or applying ear powder is not necessary in this case?

Re: [jaz] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Jaz,

To answer your queries..
  • Frontline, I've just start using it for my dog this week.. and what i did was just to pour it behind my dog's neck and leave it there.. is this correct? How long before the next application is needed and after applying it, how long before would you recommend to bath the dog?
    • Looks like you are using the Spot On version. However for a small breed like Silky Terriers, personally I would rather use the spray as I feel this would give better coverage. However, there's no harm in using the Spot-on version. Typically it lasts for at least 3 weeks and maybe up to 6 weeks. Generally we bath the dog first and later apply the frontline. Once applied, wait between 2-3days before the next bath.
  • Would it be harmful to soak the cotton with frontline and clean our dog's ear?
    • None so far from my personal experiences.
  • Where do we usually purchase the hemostat from as I agree that cleaning the dog's ear is not very easy and visible.
    • Most pet shops will carry this tool. If not, try the vets. Sometimes they stock them as well.
  • The pet shop owner asked me to spray the liquid directly to my dog's ear and leave it there before cleaning, my dog got really irritated and i suppose this is not a good thing to do, right?
    • I would only spray an alcohol based cleaner directly into the ears as it will evaporate completely. As for getting irritated, well, it's really a matter of getting used to it I suppose.
  • Jaz is a silky terrier and i simply don't see much hair in her ears, so i suppose plucking them or applying ear powder is not necessary in this case?
    • Can't really comment on this as I am not familiar with the Silky Terrier breed standards. However as a general rule, the insides of most breed's ears do look cleaner when plucked cleaned of hairs. However I personally leave a wee bit of hairs behind to maintain the natural wicking action to draw any moisture out of the ears.

Hope this helps. Rdgs Arthur

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza

How are you? Gary Know where to do his business now but one thing he started to bite thing like shoe and thing that can bite, even the door too ... until one day he bite one of my dad shoe and my dad was so mad, Gary was so scare he ran under the chair and hide but my dad just carry the chair up and pull him out and start scolding and hit him... pity him .. He must be really scared cause he did not make a noise when he got scold and hit .....Pirate ... Really dunno what to do about...

He actually know that he is not suppose to do that but he still do it... every time he did something wrong. I scolded him, give him the seriuios look and he knows it.. His head started to look down and sit quietly and give me those innocent look...

Is Yippi like that.. or is it boy are more naughty ...

Re: [stephee78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi, Stephanie,

Same thing happed to Yippi too. He likes to bite things, like slipper, clothes, tower, tissue, plastic bag, newspaper, plant and everything can be find in the floor. When we drop something to the floor, we have to pick it up in very fast speed, or else it will be disappear, then we can see Yippi chewing something in the corner and the thing is in his mouth already UnsureCrazySlyLaugh ... Every time he bite something that not suppose to bite, I will scold him and replace the things with his chewing toys ...

I think not only Schnauzer, most puppy like to bite things especially shoes. Some of the pet shop is selling some puppy toys in shoes’ shape. But had advised by someone not to buy this type of toys for our fur kids b coz he will think that the things in this shape (our shoes), is their toys, could be bitted.

Yippi is very lucky, all the members in my family seldom scold and hit yippi b coz they love him very much. My sister and me be the 'bad man', only we will hit and scold him. Ya, Yippi will know that I am scolding him too and will sit or lying down on the floor quietly and showing his innocent face. I always cannot tahan his innocent face and keep smiling. Then he will know that I am no longer angry already and goyang-goyang his tail and come to me. I know that sometime I am too manja him but I really can’t angry at his pity look Tongue. But one thing is when I raise the newspaper roll, he will stop what he is doing.

Hey, don't worry, Gary is still a puppy Smile. Be patient and give him a proper training.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza

You are right, that most of the puppy is like that but I think male puppy is more active, female is a lot better. This is my first time raise a male puppy. But I can see the different between female and male. Female is a lot quiet and they always wan you to touch her and etc …. But male when you try to touch him, he will start playing with you, they are like very active wanna play all the time.

I think we should buy those toys that look like a shoe, which will confuse them of which is allowed and which is not.

I really cannot tahan their innocent look too, but no choice have to do it else he will continue the same mistake. Me too I will start smiling.Sly

Yupp have to be patient just like raising a kid Tongue

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi, Arthur,

I was done my first grooming (trimming only) to Yippi yesterday Cool. Really happy and can’t wait to share with uncle Arthur leh. But so pity of Yippi b coz his mom had accidentally clip his ear till bleeding Pirate. Didn't bought the powder you mentioned, immediated used the ice to stop bleeding. Sakit yippi’s ear, but sakit his mom’s heart...

Ho~~i… It is not easy to trim a schnauzer leh, the most difficult part is the ear, the face and the belly area. It took me almost 3 hours to complete the grooming, trimming only loh.... Frown No wonder the groomer charge so expensive for grooming a schnauzer.

Will post the photo for uncle Arthur's comments when the photo is ready Tongue.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza!

Congrats on taking your first step into self-grooming Smile! Much of the Schnauzer charm is lost when the doggie is not groomed properly. A well groomed schnauzer is one of the smartest looking breeds around which is a source of joy and pride for the owner..

We all learn thru mistakes...Tongue Giving a pet groom is a good start. As you have found out, knowing how to groom is one thing, learning to control or handle the doggie is another. And yes, the face is one of the challenging areas to groom especially the eyebrows. One mistake and oops! the result is difficult to hide...Unsure

Do post the pics..especially if you have the before and after pics. Yippi must be soo handsome now!

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

HI Eliza..

Happy to hear that you groom for your Yippi .. i think is really difficult to groom for Gary cause he will move around and turn here and there, especially his face and neck.

Last Weekend i went to Genting with Gary he was so happy, he run around at the Out door car park infront of the Genting Hotel. We paly hide and seek. SO cute ... When he saw a group of people coming toward him he will start barking and but after that he start playing with them. After the group left another couple is a Malay come along... he thought ppl wanna play with him again , so he run toward them. Silly boy ...Laugh

By the way, i want to upload Gary picture to the Photo Gallery, but i'm not sure how to upload, please advise. Thanks

Re: [stephee78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi, Stephanie,

Wow, so lucky of Gary, enjoyed the cold weather in Genting Cool. Which hotel were you staying in Genting. They allowed you to bring Gary in meh?? Please show me how, may be I can bring Yippi along next time. When Yippi meet with the stranger, he will bark too. But he not means to fight. If the people say hello to yippi, yippi will be very happy and just shake shake his tail and play with them Smile. But most of the time the people will go away Frown.

Yah loh! Not easy to groom yippi. I was not using the grooming table, I just used a normal table, Yippi was move around and turn here and there too. Ha Ha Ha.... When I was doing the grooming, this sound you can heard in my house, “sit sit yippi… stay yippi… sit sit… come come… kuai lah…yippi ~~~~” (repeat and repeat....) SlySlySly.

To upload picture to the photo gallery, first…… you have to register Cool. You must have you photos in jpg format (not sure can be other format or not, for example bitmap). Then you click on the “Upload Photos” on the right top corner in the page. Select and enter the necessary data. To include the photo, click on the “Browse” button, select the photo you want to upload, click on “Open” button. Then click on “Upload/Submit” button in the bottom of the page. The photo is uploaded. Then you have to wait for the approval from the web master.

Happy uploading Smile

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza

That dayI went for one day trip at Genting. But I plan to stay at Awana Genting next time cause they have those apartment so I can sneak Gary in. My bf bring his dog to Awana B4, so i'll try next time.

Don’t know when Gary Started, to sit alone at the back passenger sit, when he know the font passenger sit is occupied. That day he was so excited sitting alone at the back sit, he stand up and look at the back window. But I think he nearly got seasick cause after sometime he settle down, lay down quietly. Luckly I didn’t go Cameron Highland with him, else he will suffer during the journey.

Re: [stephee78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi, Stephine, Thanks.

Have talked to HC Yeap, for Miniature Schnauzer, the hair on top of the front leg should not be kept too long and too thick, have to trim a bit. This is the actual look of MS Wink.

Yippi is going to 1 year old on the coming 25th, men already loh Cool

Really sorry leh, b coz I have no idea about breeding. But I have a female mongrel, 9 months old, yippi always play with her. But they just play catching and biting, nothing else Tongue. May be some other doggie experts here can help for this question Smile.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

Not bad for a first timer-leh Smile! Not bad at all... The clippered coat looks very smooth. Impressive.. Now for some constructive comments..

1. Lose the front "bib". Too heavy furnishings at the chest spoils Yippi's outline. It should be clippered close to the skin. If you are not sure, use the thinning shears to take off the fur bit by bit.

2. The body fringe is too heavy. Use the thinning shears to thin it down a bit. We don't want Yippi to be like wearing a skirt.

3. Trim the body fringe further down. This will give show Yippi's chest to the full advantage.

4. The front and rear leg furnishings are too thick. It may look good when Yippi is standing still but when he moves..well, let's say this will not show off his gait to the full advantage. Hint..Use his paws as a guideline, trim the furnishings to just cover his paws to make your column.

5. Clip the rear legs furnishings further down to the just above the hocks. Right now it is too high up.

Here's a picture of Pepper below after grooming.

And this is a picture of Teddy, who is Lee Ron's littermate..

Hope this helps and happy grooming!

Re: [stephee78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Stephanie,

Gary is 8 mths old already? Getting to be big boy already. If he's consistently lifting his leg when peeing, then that's a sign of sexual maturity. Also feel whether his 2 testicles have fully descended. If yes, then definetly you'll have to watch him round a bitch on heat.

Hope this helps.

Hi Arthur

Yes he is started to lift his leg when he peer and i think his 2 testicles have fully descended, cause is quite big Sly adn dark..so ugly...Wink ...

But is too late..they already do it and they look like husband and wife always sleep together and always looking for each other... Unsure.... Izit nothing i can do now to prevent the female dog from getting pregnant?

I know this is very cruel but we don’t have other choice, is either abortion or when she need to give birth we will send him to the Vet, but I remember my another female dog when she need to give birth she was so panic and worried, she need my family and a safe place to give birth which is in the house. But if we send the dog to the vet she will feel scared, worry and etc… I really don’t what can we do about.

Re: [stephee78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Stephanie,

Whoops! Looks like your Gary IS a big boy already..Crazy!

If you do not want this mating to be sucessful, these are the things you need to do:

1. PREVENT any further matings from taking place. Do what you must but do this first.

2. Take the bitch to your vet and says you would like to prevent her from getting pregant. Normally, the treatment is estrogen injections to be administered 3 times over several days period.

After that, it is just wait and see.

Hope this helps. Rdgs Arthur

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

HI Eliza

Last Night Gary becomes the father of 5 male puppies. But unfortunately one couldn't make. They are so cute, 2 of the puppy is black and the other 2 was white but with black spot. The black spot is so balance, from big to small spot and just the ear is black spot. The mother was exhausted after the last baby comes out. Some how the mother seem to know the baby couldn’t make it or may be she is too tired, she did not put much attention on the last baby. But I think the last baby already pass away before he come out to see the word, cause after the baby come out, it won’t move at all. We wait for so long the baby still didn’t move L

Just can’t wait to see them walk around the house… J I’ll take their picture and show it to u later.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza

Thanks .Yupp the mummy is mix of Terrier and Poodle and now the baby is mix of 3 combinations of Terrier, Poodle and MS. I don’t’ think we will keep the baby; there is not enough room for so many puppy. 2 dogs in the condo is already a lot. But one of the baby is very weak, he is the thinnest among all of them and also the one suffer the most cause when he come out that time, the buttock come out first. And some how he is related to the baby who pass away, what do u call that thing on the baby stomach? That thing cannot cut off cause is stick/related to the one which is still in the mummy stomach. So he is just hang there until the last baby come out. Poor little thing. Hope he can survive.

When the mummy give birth, we all was excited and sitting in-front of the mummy and wait, Gary was so cute, he sit together with us and look at the mummy. When the baby scream, Gary look so curious, he ear and tail start moving and started to go nearer and smell the baby. Gary look so cure with his curious face show.

Hi Eliza

Sorry I forgot to inform you that I’m not going to Penang Tongue. Anyway, the trip to PD was so great, can see all Gary funny face and reaction. He knows how to swim! He was so curious when his first step to the sea. When he’s use to the water and we bring him further out and let him swim back and he was so tired after that.

The most funniest thing is we went to Pasar Malam, then there is this malay kid and the mother say Gary is a Kambing and wanted to touch him. Everyone was laughing at him and from that night onward everyone started to call him Kambing. Sly

But is a bit troublesome when we want to have our lunch or dinner. Can’t bring him in to the restaurant.

I really enjoy this trips and looking forward to arrange another trips for him.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza

By the time they start running and playing around , gary will be very happy cause he will be busy playing with them. He is still very playfull, just like a kid always want to play.

Gary is really like my son, during the trips to PD, he follow me all the time, no matter where i go he want to follow. So i wait till he sleep and i sneak out to the ladies room on the second floor, then after a few minutes he started to look for me and he went up to second floor and knock on the door. Sly.... at that moment i feel so happy and ...... Blush dunno how to said the feeling. He is just like my son..... Tongue ... My bf is so jealous ... cause gary is staying with him and end up Gary like me more then him... Tongue

i'll post the photo, later ....

Re: [xyne] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Amy,

Not every MS is blessed with thick leg furnishings. It's mostly genetically based. For those with sparse hair growth, there's a few things you can do:

1. Feed a good diet. Make sure this does not cause hair loss. Turkey meat will cause hair loss in my schnauzers.

2. Brush the leg furnishings every other day to prevent mats/tangles.

3. After bathing, pat dry the legs with a towel, blow dry till semi-dry, then brush upwards using a slicker brush starting from the top of the leg and work your way down. This is call line brushing and will do wonders to fluff up the hairs to increase the volume.

4. Feed supplements of fish oils/ evening primrose oils for healthy coat and skin. You need that omega 3 & 6 fatty acids to promote shiny coats and good skin. I am now trying out a herbal supplement. Still on trail basis and too early to confirm the results but so far the results are encouraging.

Hope this helps.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

The leggings has to be like a column when finished as you have mentioned. To achieve that, the leggings furnishings have to be thick for maximum effect. Normally this is how I do it:

1. Comb out the furnishings. Make sure there's no mats.

2. Use either a regular shampoo or self-rinse type and towel dry.

3. Blow till semi dry with hair dryer.

4. Now use slicker brush to comb out the fur using upwards strokes starting from the top of the leg.

5. Trick to a good fluffy effect is to make sure the fur is dry before proceeding to the next leg.

6. Once you have that, you may want to chalk it to make the fur stiff.

7. Use a long 8" scissors with the tips pointing downwards, and using the paws outline as a guide, cut smoothly in one clean motion to trim off the excess fur. Do not use a chopping motion. Do this all round the leg to achieve the column effect.

Hope this helps.

You might want to take him to the vet to check for possible ear mites (if he scratches his ears continously)

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Arthur,

My MS (Brandy), salt and pepper but she is has very dark coat since was a puppy. The groomer told me that her coat will slowly shade to a lighter color but it doesn't seem to.

Now, her coat is a bit brownish. She doesn't lick her body much (so it could not be the saliva). I do bring her out for walk everyday. I bath her once a week with 'lovely bath' shampoo recommeded by the groomer and we do apply conditioner after bathing. She is fed on Eukanuba dry food.

Could it be the sun or the shampoo? What type of shampoo should i use to maintain her coat color?

BTW, about groming her, i do comb her almost everyday to prevent mats but I wonder how often should I strip her coat. I read somewhere that stripping is done twice a year. Is it true?

Re: [lsling78] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi lsling78,

Brandy is a dark salt and pepper and now her coat is turning brownish. You mentioned she's on Ekanuba dry food. Well, from my experience, the brownish tint can come from 2 sources.. Food and sun. Ekanuba has been known to cause dark coats to turn lighter, and light coats to turn darker. After switching brands, the coats on my MS reverted back to their dark colouring.

Also too much direct exposure to sun will also tend to turn dark coats reddish.

As for stripping, I presume you are referring to the process whereby the dog's coat is plucked clean until the bare skin is showing. Afterwards, the new wire hairs will grow out to give the required coarse coat for showing.

If so, then depending on how fast the coat grows back, your show coat will most probably be in prime condition for about 1-2mths before it gets too long and the whole process have to be repeated again. From bare skin to show coat length, it generally takes about 12 weeks or so.

If you are not showing your MS, generally I would suggest you clipper the coat as it will still give the same look but minus all the hassle and time consuming efforts to maintain the stripped coat.

Hope this helps. Arthur (BTW..it's good you brush out Brandy's coat daily!)

SmileHi Arthur,

Thanks for the information.

So what brand should I feed her with? Well, I strip her with those metal stripers. So, how often should I strip her with this metal thing?I don't pluck her hair. I clipped her hair.

She is my first MS and I want to learn more about MS. I love MS. I plan to get another female black and silver to accompany her because Brandy may be blind on one eye. I have not decided on the cataract removal surgery yet. I need to talk to more MS owners that have this problem.

This time we are going to choose our MS properly.

Thanks again.

Hi, Arthur, How are your little furkids ?? Long time didn't troubling you liao loh Tongue...

I have a questions to ask lah Tongue. We need to trim short the fur within large pad and toe pads of our furkid, right ?? Do we need to trim off the fur within the toes and the fur cover his nails ?? I done this to Yippi but his leg look funny FrownTongue... I done this because there are many fur in these area of all his 4 legs. I'm not sure is this the problem cause his leg got inflamed last few weeks (he always had this problem), so I trim them off.

Now I full groom Yippi every two months. Seems he already use to it and he will stand still for me to do the trimming, even though I didn't use any grooming arm. I will groom Yippi this weekend and hopefully can capture some photo and post up.

Thanks and Best regards.

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,

My apologies for the late rply. To answer yr query, no, I normally do NOT trim off the fur within the toes and that covering the nails. It would look funny (as you have discovered!) A good groomer would try to achieve the column look for the MS leg furnishings. This style would cover the nails. If the nails can be seen, then it's too long and has to be trimmed.

Hope this helps and good to hear that Yippi is behaving himself when on the grooming table. A well groomed MS is a joy to look at.Smile

Re: [arthur] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hey Aurthur,

I've read all the tips on how to groom our MS. Was just wondering when you mentioned 'plucking', does it actually mean pulling each and every hair out?? Crazy That would be rather painful isn't it? And you mentioned that there's a website that have pictures of all the grooming equipments, do you mind give me the address? I would love to know which brush is which.

By the way, I've recently got a MS (Salt & Pepper) and her name is Sunshine, 3 mths old. Very mischievous little fella... when she poo at the wrong place, before i could scold her, she will grumble first... Tongue!

I've met you before in one of the gathering at KK sometime ago, I owned a Black & White - Lhsa Apso. It's a pity that dogs are banned from the KK park... hope we'll have a new place soon.

Re: [gladyslcp] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Gladys...

I remember you! Congrats on getting your Sunshine! Guess now your Lhasa Apso is no longer lonely.

To answer yr query on plucking. Yes, plucking is the process of pulling out each and every hair by the roots. This is not really painful especially on the body area as MS do not shed. The dead hair just hang on there in the coat till we pull it out or it gets dislodged when the dog runs about and brushes into objects. In fact, our MS actually goes to sleep when we pluck their coats.Smile

Plucking (or hand stripping) is to bring out the harsh outercoat necessary for show dogs. However, most showdogs will be clippered once they completed their championship titles as it take a LOT of time and effort to maintain the show coat. A clippered MS looks just as smart though!

There are 2 websites that I find useful:Here's the links..

http://www.strippingknives.com/...ng/schnauzertips.htm

http://www.alpats.com/groom.html

The 1st link is very informative and gives step by step information to handstripping.

The 2nd link shows lots of pictures including the tools plus what NOT to do when grooming a MS.

Hope this helps.

Re: [gladyslcp] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Gladys,

Normally we start the plucking process from 4-5 mths onwards when the hairs have grown to more than 1.5in or more. That's also about the time the hair life cycle ends and is ready to be removed. Any earlier than that, the hairs are still "live" and plucking it out then would be painful.

Glad to know your two furkids are best of friends. Do take care that they don't play too rough especially if Rumba chews and tugs on Sunshine's beard. MS looks funny without their trademark beard! Shocked

Hey Aurthur,

thanks for the info.. but unfortunately, i've just sent Sunshine for grooming about 3 weeks back... now gotta wait for her fur to grow longer.. only then i can start experimenting the plucking process..

Well, about Rumba chewing off sunshine's moustache... i am more afraid of Sunshine chewing off Rumba's fur.... Sunshine is the rough one whereas Rumba is very gentle. Even eating habit, our little fella will gulp down all her food within 30 seconds & eye at Rumba's bowl while RUmba is still slowy chewing away..Crazy

I owned a pair of MS, Wesley(Male) and Peppa(Female). As you can see on my avatar, that's my male MS and I groomed it myself. Though not good in it, but I am trying my best to improve.Laugh However, both my MS have totally different kind of coat. Wesley has soft coat and grows long very fast, while Peppa has rough coat, and can hardly grow! FrownIs it that becaused they stripped her coat before? Is there anything that can be done to make her fur grow? Please help.

I've seen the website you provide here where they show pics of groomed MS, and I really like how they done the MS's coat, especially the leg part. it looks so nice, but I have no slightest idea on how it is done Crazy

Hi! Sorry for the late reply..was swapped over by work lately.. :(
Anyway to answer yr query..the ear powder is used to provide a positive grip when using the twezzer to pluck away the ear hairs.. (something like chalk powder when you go for bowling!)
And yes, MS ears need to be pluck cleaned to maintain the hygiene. Otherwise, the ears will become stinky and dirty..A good MS groomer would normally do that as part of the grooming service.
Hope this helps.

Re: [carienna] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi there!
Apologies for the late reply. Just came back to Malaysia!
It's great that you have picked up some grooming skills to maintain your MS looking their best!
MS coat properties are genetically based. Nothing much we can do about it I'm afraid. What MS breeders go for is to combine the best qualites of both, ie. dense coat with naturally wire hair. Peppa seems to be from European stock..they have a natural wiry coat but not too much leggings. Having said that, I found one supplement that does promote hair growth to a certain extent..
As for the grooming of the MS leg, the ideal is to have a barber pole effect or column like. There's some techiques involved but a bit lengthy to go into detail here. Basically you need to comb out the leggings, bath them, and partly blow dry the leggings, apply cholestral while still damp, blow dry some more, apply chalk powder, blow dry again..etc..whew! lots of work but the effect is well worth it!
Hope this helps.

Hey,

Thanks for the replyWink Where have you been to?

Hmm, what was the supplement that you found, saying to promote the hair growth?

Peppa's wiry coat is on her body, while her leggings, hehe... i think only 1/5 of Wesley's. Sigh. Some of my friend are not much familiar with dogs. So when I show them Wesley and tell them he's a MS, they'll ask me again what breed is peppa, like they really have a huge difference Frown

So much work to do those leggings... have you tried it before? it sound so much like cooking! hahahaa! :P

Thanks a lot anyway.

Hi Arthur

v impressed with yours sharing your MS experience in this forum. your comments have been a great insight! Wink

I just got an MS myself. It's nearly a month since, and yup, he's lots of fun! Cool U mentioned something about Euka**** food having some slight colouring effect on your MS. Am feeding my MS that brand of dog food now, and am a bit worried about that effect. Would prefer for his natural colours to come thru. Care to share what brand of dog food u r using for your MS?

The reason i am using EUka**** is cos i believe it's good for physical/stature growth (but not really sure on its effect on teh coat, until now). I got my MS from a pet shop and he looks a bit under-size. So am tryting to get him to catch up on growth.

Also my MS has got some dandruff problem. Shopkeeper says it's natural (will disappear later) and vet says it's fungus infection. In anycase, have fed him coat oil supplements and now it's a bit better (not so much dandruff anymore). Was just wondering if there's anything I shoud do to make sure that that dandruff problem stays away?

Any help will be appreciated! WinkWinkWink

hi thedogghouse

not sure waht medication it is as i bought it from the vet, not from teh counter. first vet i went to says it was fungus infection to which he prescribed anti-fungal shampoo. I used taht shampoo weekly, but not much change. later i switched to another vet, and he's put my MS on liquid medication. its yellowish in colour and my MS likes it v much.

my MS is still a puppy so the coat is not so thick. i am thinking that the coat will get thicker and coarser as he grows older. ya.. am looking forward to those schnauzer-type coat one day.

how old is your MS btw?

Re: [chnyuppie] Grooming of M Schnauzer

hi,

hmm....since the vet gave the medication to your MS, i think your MS skin condition really bad. my vet said if shampoo can cure her skin, then no need to give those extra medication. it's not necessary. if the shampoo can't do anything about it, then might be take another alternative way to cure it.

how old is your MS? i'm not sure whether can get thick coat or not cos i saw from the petshop, although they are 2 months old, their coat are thick. so i think my MS's coat won't grow thick already. Unsure

my MS now is 5 months old. the picture in my avatar is 4 months old. after i groomed her. not thick fur right?

hi there the dogghouse

My MS is 3 months old.

As for the skin problem, i don't think it was that bad. It's funny how the two vets we went to both gave different conclusions.

Had a look at your avatar. Quite difficult to tell whether or not the fur/hair is thick. Sorry, cos I have owned an MS for a far lesser time than you. Do you practice hand strip?

Anyway wat dog food brand do you feed your MS? I have been thiking of switching.

Hi Kenken

Well, it just appears like dandruff. Tiny white flakes in its coat. But it's not so bad now. Nearly 98% dandruff-free.

Why?

Hi kenken

THanks for your reply. Coudl i just ask, in your MS's case, did it just disappear by itself? At what age?

My MS is nearly cured. Maybe I shouldnt have fed him any antibiotics. Would have preferred for him to built up his own immune system! (so that he can be a "stronger" dog)

Re: [chnyuppie] anyone watched Buffy last nite? (it was the final episode of the SERIES)

For my case by 4months old both of my puppy should be okey, i suspect all this might due to lack of nutritions from the Breeder or pet shop that don't want the puppies to grow so fast because the moment i feed my furkids proper diet i can see they are more healthy and the skins improve alot.

Hey Y@ Smile

U r very lucky to adopt a MS from SPCA & its still considered a young... he looks wonderful too Wink

Ever consider DIY?... I do my own grooming & thru experience, dare say grooming a MS is not too difficult... in the beginning it may be a lil' challenging but u'll get the hang of it after sometime... all u need is a reliable pet clipper, scissors & some patience... its highly recommanded unless u plan to show ur furkid or really dun like the mess...

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

I think all M Schnauzer shld learn to groom them as it will help to bond the relationship with the dog. I own a 21/2 yrs old MS. They are very lovable, attached and observant dog. He like to be close to his owners and loves to sleep with me in bed at night.

I used to send him for grooming every 2 months. I started buying hair cutting shears and slowly copied the style of grooming slowly. As I learn I became more confident and am now grooming him myself.

The most important about grooming MS is their moustache and their eyebrows which is their distinctive trade mark and makes it outstanding.A well taken care MS can be very obedient, house trained, playful and loves soft toys.

Grooming an MS takes a lot of patience and practice but you will enjoy every minute of it once you become adept at it. Initially send him to a professional groomer and observe how they cut the hair. Then get a set of hair cutting trimmer (start with those that you can get these from supermarket). Don't get the cheapest type as these are useless and go not cut well. After you have learn how to hanlde the trimmer properly, then buy a good set which cost a couple of hundreds. Always groom your MS first and after that give him a good bath and dry with a towel following the contour of cut to avoid entangling their hair. After blow dry, apply powder and comb down.

Enjoy yourself.

Re: [low_richard] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Thanks. Totally agree with you, that's why I learned to groom Yippi myself.. Yaya, at first we will feel that not easy to groom a MS, but after a few times practise, you will use to it and will find that it is really fun.. really thanks for the "shi fu" here that guided me on the MS grooming Smile ...

One thing is, now I didn;t groom Yippi on grooming table, I feel that is pity for him to stand for 2-3 hours for grooming (my skill not so good, everytime has to spend a few hours to complete the grooming Unsure), he look really tired after grooming.. I let him lying on a big pellow (cover with a layer of plastic or cloth) and doing the grooming.. is more easy to handle and the result is not so bad Wink..

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi Eliza,
It's a pleasure assisting other MS owners who need help with them. Don't call me "sifu" as I learn thru trial and error.
It is a pleasure keeping an MS as they are so active and lovable. How is your MS doing?
Mine just love to go for walks and he is a beautiful travelling companion if you drive outstation.MS has a very big appetite and loves to eat. Got to control their feed so as they will not be overweight. My also loves fruits especially bananas, apples and pear.
It is not neccessary to have a grooming table. All u need is a coffee table where you can be comfortable yourself when you trim him. Always remember to maintain the eyebrow shape and the muzzle look as they are the trade mark of an MS.
MS must be housetrained and can be trained easily as they are quick leaner and very observant.
Good luck and enjoy every minute with your MS.

Re: [ettan] Grooming of M Schnauzer

sorry for the late reply...

I have no idea for other breeds.. but for my own experience on MS.. they really need more effort on grooming.. major grooming you can send to grooming centre, but yourself, you have to do normal grooming like combing and etc..

and no matter any breed, they all need you care and time.. time to walk them, train them, bath them and etc... and one more, your love ...

for me, no other choice, MS... because this breed is suitable to me ...

Hope you can get your new member soon ...

you can try to get advice from the vet or pet shop... just for my own opinion, if he is not so dirty and smelly, try not to bath him so often lah, at this age...

and if you bath him, try to use warm water, make sure he won get cold, dry him completely after bath...

there are many type of puppy shampoo in the market, you can get advice from the pet shop too...

Re: [elizatye] Grooming of M Schnauzer

I posted something earlier in the Utility Group section about hand-stripping the Min Schnauzer before coming across this thread - maybe a more appropriate one for my query - can anyone here show me how to hand strip the doggie?

I want to do this rather than clip her because I've read that this is better for the coat and better for the groomer (i.e. myself) because a hand-stripped coat is easier to maintain. She's getting on to two months old now and I'm told it's about time to start getting her used to hand-stripping.

Re: [PangurBan] Grooming of M Schnauzer

hello there,

I am Chris here, my ms is Tobe....hand stripping a ms is very troublesome and it will be heart breaking for you as the owner because it will be a very painful experience for your puppy. most ppl hand strip because they want to show their dogs. if u plan to keep the ms as a pet dog, clipping would be enough. So far i have not heard of any groomers saying handstripping a ms will be easier for them. Clipping is a much easier way to groom a ms.....well if u really want to handstrip ur puppy, there is actually books or info on the website about this matter...there are procedure to plucking actually, and it can;t be done all in one day ...it might take up to a wekk or more. good luck....and may ur ms bring joy to you....

Re: [cybersim] Grooming of M Schnauzer

hello there,

Hand stripping or known as plucking is a must if u plan to show your ms..the reason we need to handstrip is because handstripping will make the fur of the ms to be thicker and alot more coarse. most would prefer to hand strip from the very beginning when u get the puppy. hand stripping does need a bit of skill. it would also be painful for your puppy if done the wrong way, some puppy might even have fever....

good luck,

Chris

Re: [cybersim] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi there,

You can still show if you have clipped your Ms but not many would do that because the judges will know that you clipped instead of stripped. It also depends on the txture of your MS's Fur some are born wiry and dense so if you start stripping now, it might still have a chance. ON where to get good clippers and stripping knife, there are many shops that sells clipper depending on the price you r willing to pay. Sea park pet supplies do have clippers for sale. good luck

Re: [cybersim] Grooming of M Schnauzer

if you want the blown up look, first thing first..does your MS have dense hair at the leg. if he or she does, it is very easy. usually wat ppl do is they will get rid of all tangles (hopefully there is no tangles) then after giving the ms a shower (without the conditioner). usually wat groomers does is the will cut the fur at the leg into a straight pole..sorry not too sure how to explain...if you look at a well groomed schnauzer, the hair at the leg must be very dense and it should be like wearing straight cut jeans...some groomers might cut it different and it all boils down to the style you personally want. for me i like the hair the legs to be thick and straight....makes the dog look nicer. let your dog take some supplements to ensure they don;t shed as much and the quality of the hair to be nice.

Re: [wais81] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Chris:

Well, it's time consuming yes. The main reason I handstrip her is because I hear a handstripped coat is stronger and more water- and dirt-repellent. This is useful since I plan to take doggie out for walks on a regular basis and she'll also come along on jungle walks. I've done her crown and part of her face so far. I find it easier to do when she's dozy. She hardly protests. At other times it can be a bit of a struggle.

Well, it's a hundred + postage & packing, so quite a lot more. But I agree that it's a lot to pay. But I look at it this way: I'm already saving a lot of money by grooming her myself, and if there's a device that will make the job easier for me (as well as for the dog), why not?

Arún will be five months in 9 days' time. She's perfectly OK when I pluck her chest, but she insists on biting me when I try to do her rear end and her rear legs. Oh well, just a few more patches and she's done. Just need to clip her belly and put the finishing touches to her face. I'll be getting the clipper from Ben tomorrow.

Got the clipper just now and tried it on a few patches. It's actually a professional clipper for humans, not for wow wows hehe.

Here's how she looks now. Not quite done yet - still need to pluck a few patches more from her hind legs and to sculpt the face properly.

The difference is that with the Cert, you will be able to know who the father and mother and even grand father and mother. Also i think with the Cert, at least you know that you are paying for a pure breed. But honestly these days, the value of Cert is big question mark now. Cos i do know that breeders can actually play along with the Cert. So is a matter of the trustworthiness of the breeders. Usually if the dog come with Cert, it is more expensive than one without.

White MS?? Cool!! Is white MS getting popular here??

you are right. cert o no cert a bit confusing nowadays. most importantly is you get a pup which is healthy and good temperament and in breed standard of course.

i got my salt and pepper with cert for 1.2k. Blush

Grooming of M Schnauzer

Min schnauzer if groom by clipper, should there be a visible line separating the clippered part and the feathering part at the bottom? because my groomer did that line, so my schnauzer's like wearing skirt. i saw books, the line doesn't seem that obvious. so shud there be a line there?

Hey, quick question to all you experienced schaunzer groomers... If i get a clipper from US, will i have voltage problems? i was told the US clippers are made for 120 volt but Msia's 240v? does that mean i need to buy a transformer?

any help from anyone would be very much appreciated.

Hi all,

It's been a long time I didn't log in here. I got one ms. All the while, I've been grooming her using clipper. Now going to buy other tools to groom my ms. I've been using the cordless clipper (Doggyman). It seems now the battery getting low. Is it possible to straight use from the adapter connect to the clipper?

Does anyone know how much is a grooming table? Where can I buy variety of grooming tools? Somewhere around old klang road or puchong.

Hi! I know there is a new shop whom they are specialized in MS. They have been in this breed for a little more then 10 years. The shop is opposite Sun City Cafe in Prima Tanjung opposite Island Plaza. I don't know if they are in operation already but I am excited to get there. The groomer was a Japanese Certified Groomer. Do try it out.

I do not think that its because of hand stripped coat. Logically speaking, it does the same thing if you strip or clipped (I mean on the line thing) on the coat, there is a lot of differences if you do it correctly, i.e. not cutting the coat.

Re: [holycow] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Dear all,

I am from KL, and planning to get a baby MS soon, as an in-house guard dog. I prefer MS because their coat does not drop much and they are agile, active, intelligent and more importantly, good with kids.

I have skim through your messages - phiew it took me quite a while - and i wonder:

Can i keep a MS with just basic grooming like i do for my bigger dog, i.e. clean eyes, cut nails, comb/brush it every two to three days, shower once in a week?

And once a while i will send the MS to grooming centre to keep the fur short?

Is the MS coat managable if I do not have all those specialised tools - just scissors, comb and brush.

My intention is to have that dog as a companion and want my little twin brothers (age 5 now) to grow with it, I only want it to be happy and clean. and i don't need my MS to be show-dog quality in terms of outlook.

Re: [makwk] Grooming of M Schnauzer

You will need:

1 Slicker brush
2 Dematting knife/comb/device
3 Comb
4 Pin brush
5 Small ball-tipped scissors for occasional trimming
6 Nail clipper
7 Pair of hemostats
8 Ear-cleaning fluid
9 Cotton wool

I would say this is the bare minimum you need for basic home grooming apart from the 4-5 trips a year to a professional groomer to keep your schnauzer's coat in proper condition.

The schnauzer's coat mats easily so you need Nr 1 & 2 to deal with the mats, 3-4 times a week at least. Nr 3 will also help with the dematting and you should get one with both fine as well as coarse teeth. The fine toothed side will double up as a flea/tick comb. You use Nr 3 & 4 for the blow-dry after a bath. It's good to have Nr 5 on hand in case you want to trim off a bit of fur here and there now and then. You need Nr 6 to deal with the nails (once every 1-2 weeks). The outer ear canals in schnauzers get overgrown with a dense growth of hair very quickly and you need Nr 7 to clear this, otherwise it becomes a breeding ground for all sorts of things, and you need Nr 7, 8 & 9 to clean the ears out now and then.

Good luck.

Re: [babymiki] Grooming of M Schnauzer

It's ok to bathe her. But since the puppy's still a bit young and fragile, make sure you dry her up immediately and use warmish water - their bodies are still small and are not able to cope so well with sudden changes in temperature.

I think once a week is excessive. I bathe my schnauzer once a month, once every six weeks, sometimes once every two months. Miniature schnauzers don't generally have a strong doggie smell and really if you comb and brush her regularly, all you'll need to do is to wipe her down now and then with a damp towel, and clean her paws after you come back from a walk, and her muzzle after a meal of black pepper steak. Excessive use of shampoo can deplete the natural oils on the skin and fur and lead to problems.

Miniature schnauzers can be prone to skin problems, so if your schnauzer has a problem and you find a product that helps, I'd use it, but I wouldn't go over the top. A lot of the time, the skin problems come from an inappropriate diet or aggravating factors around the house such as floor cleaners, shampoos (see above) and the like and I would deal with those first rather than slap some chemicals on the dog. I don't use anything on my own schnauzer.

Furnishing refers to all the frilly, fluffy bits on the legs and flanks of a properly groomed schnauzer.

Just to add to what I've written in a previous post - you also want to trim the fur between the paw pads of your schnauzer. This tends to grow very quickly and if you don't trim it off, your dog might start sliding around esp on a polished marble floor say. Use the ball-tipped scissors for this purpose. You should not leave it up to the professional groomer to do this unless you visit her once a month.

Hi! Sorry! I was very busy these days. The sodium bicarbonate is use to clean the frunishings. If you have yellowins stains and wants it white you can use it. But then its better to leave it to the professional to do it as they have a better way.

Hi! Irene,

If you cannot get it out, then you have to maintain your dog starting from now. I know of someone who can turn it white instantly but its not advisable, its better you maintain and slowly up keep your dog back white furnishings. I wash my dogs furnishings if it gets dirty and do not let her go out into dirty places. If she does, then I will wash her furnishings or let her go for grooming.

Re: [holycow] Grooming of M Schnauzer

Hi holycow,

Of course, I do wash her furnishings if she dirtys it as I allow her to go outside to pee/poo and to play in the garden/courtyard but you know, white will never stay white, it will be sort of yellowish kind of white. I bath her at least once a week. I am interested in knowing how to whiten their furnishings, esp. on the feet and beard like what you see in show dogs. Perhaps you or someone can enlighten me into the secret. Thanks anyway.

Re: [irenekang] Grooming of M Schnauzer

If you do not maintain her, she will be yellowish. I wash my dog's furnishings if I see some stains and if its dirty. And when my breeder gave me the dog, he specifically told me that if I do not keep it white then he will take it back from me. You can try to put apple cider vinegar once in a while in their food to make it white. But its all maintenances! My breeder (Ben in Penang) he has his dogs in air con 24/7 and has a special place for them to poo/pee. All his dogs are in the white furnishings so for your statement of white can never stay white, its not ture. I have been to his house and also saw it with my own eyes. And they are not show prepared. You take a look at my Binggi's picture, she has white furnishings and all I do is maintain her. Maybe you can contact his wife's shop 04-890 3516 she grooms my Binggi even before they opened grooming shop. Maybe they can help you turn your dog white but they are in Penang. Hope that helps!

Wah lau eh ...... so expensive to maintain a white MS. Looks like before I wanna get 1 white MS, i already give up. They seems to be having a better life than us. LIke that, i'd better stick to colored MS. I like particularly the grey-white MS. at least can hide any defects in white. I want to enjoy my pet - not put myself to stress with my pet.

I was once being scolded by my breeder/ friend (Ben) to mention White MS. So please do not say that I mention about white MS cos he really devote his life to MS and he will be mad at me if he hears I mention white MS. The Grey-White MS is Salt and Pepper. This was my first lesson from him too. There are 3 colors Salt & Pepper, Black & Silver and Black.

It is an important thing to bring your pet dogs and cats to a pet groomer to maintain neat and clean. It is to avoid also any foul smell on their body and especially the attacking of fleas.
