We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi all,

We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA and let me just explain how the whole thing went.

When you go to SPCA, many of the dogs are in various "wards" depending on their age and conditions, and in front of the wards, there are pieces of paper with information about each dog - name, age, breed, description, medical records (whether the dog has been vaccinated) etc. The paper also tells you how much the adoption fee is.
It ranges from RM150 (mix-breed) to RM800 (pure-bred). Yes, it is rather surprising that there are quite a few pedigree doggies. (We paid RM 200 for a Spitz mix and RM800 for a pedigree Basset Hound.)

The doggies there are all neutered/spayed and I think most of them have gone through tests for heartworm. They have also received necessary vaccination and if the next round of vaccination is due soon when you adopt the dog, you can bring your doggie to SPCA for free vaccination.

Once you decide on your future canine mate, you fill in a form with your address and contact number.
(I think we had to pay some deposit then.) They may ask you a few questions to see if you're prepared for adoping a doggie. Then they tell you that they will come one day and inspect your house. (They won't tell you when they are coming.) In our case, they came during the daytime while we were away and just left a note that said "KIV" (keep in view)meaning that they can't give us the dog.. yet.

To be honest, we were rather upset that they were so fussy when we were trying our part to help them and especially when we have already been living with 3 dogs and they knew it. I called SPCA to find out why we didn't get a straight approval and was told that there was a small gap underneath the front gate and that a small dog could squeeze him/herself out.

I called them up again and told them that we would make whatever necessary changes. I also asked them to come again to see how we live with our 3 dogs and to explain how ready we were to welcome another member of the family. Passion and perseverance paid off, and we got another doggie. Since the doggie had just been spayed, we had to wait a few more weeks until she fully recovered and was ready for coming home.

SPCA may be a bit strict with their inspection, but I guess they want the dogs to go to good homes as much as we want them to, and please please do not give up just because they didn't say "yes" in the first round. Physical surrounding is of course very important, but the prime importance is your love and commitment to the doggie.

By the time we got our 2nd dog from SPCA - no.5 in our canine family - the people at SPCA remembered us and let us take the doggie home for a couple of days before we formally adopted him to see how he and the other doggies get along.

Well, hope our little story can give you a bit of help when you adopt doggies from them....

One more thing, since this forum is a spin-off from the "Dog Rescue and Adoption" forum and in that forum, there are talks about posting pictures of some dogs for adoption at SPCA. If I take some pics there, can I post them at the Photo Gallery or is there any dedicated place for "dogs for adoption" photos?

Thanks

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Nice Sharing Chika. Your kindness are truly appreciated.Smile

If you have the pics from SPCA, I would suggest you to send it to our webmaster at bgkhoo@hileytech.com , remember to let him know your username and please write down which catergory you wish to post it to, say~ "SPCA dogs for adoption". Coz there's still no such section in the photo gallery but we do already have members suggested about it. Hopefully we could see it up real soon!Wink So others could do the same and put the pics in that particular section.

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi Chika,

Thanks for sharing ur experience to us, i think the adoption fees r higher than RM800, bcos i saw a rottie puppy there n they charge for RM900 for adoption(Rather call it buy from SPCA). Actually it's gd that SPCA is really strict when they receive application from public but it's quite disappointed when they reject our request due to we r working or the house r not suitable to have dog(no enough compound).

Glad to hear that u got 5 doggie, hope u can bring them all to the gathering, c yaSmile

Re: [snowflake] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi snowflake,

Wow, RM900... then again, when we adopted the basset hound for Rm800, they said that these pricy doggies really help SPCA make some profits for their operation.

Too bad they turned you guys down for adoption. It's very very frustrating, I know. It also took us a lot of persuading. I'm not sure whether she is still there or not, but there is a caucasian lady (I think she said she's from Belgium) and she is very easy to talk to and in our case, she was the one that helped us to convince SPCA about our first adoption.

By the way, we were at the last gathering. If any of you remember seeing a couple by the lake with 5 dogs... it's us.

Yep, it's us. The black one is "Kuroi" meaning black in Japanese. The Bassed Hound is our 2nd adopted kid from SPCA. Then you'd probably saw us with a Golden Retriever and 2 small white dogs.

We'll be there again at the next meeting and looking forward to seeing you all.

Re: [kelvincheong] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi Kelvin,

SPCA Selangor is located in Ampang Jaya and is near the Ampang Point mall. If you're coming along Jalan Ampang from KL, you'll come to a big flyover just before Ampang Point. Don't take the flyover and instead go left. Turn right at the first traffic light (you'll see Ampang Puteri Hospital on your right) and there should be KL International School on your left. Keep straight for a while and you'll see a small string of shops (including 7-Eleven) on your left. SPCA is next to the shoplot. The name of the street is Jalan Kerja Air Lama and the tel no. for SPCA is 4256-5312/4253-5179. (I don't drive and am not very good at giving directions...sorry.)

I think there is SPCA in Johor... this one you'd better check with SPCA in Selangor.

By the way, I sent some photos of the dogs there for adoption to the webmaster since I don't know where to post them. Hopefully these doggies will find happy homes soon...

Re: [Peekaboo] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi peekaboo,

Yep, it's our dog "Gizmo" and he's a terrier mix. We don't know his exact birthday, but he is around 1 1/2 years old. We got him from a nearby pet/fish shop inSetapak, KL, but he had a brother/sister, who was taken the day before we got him. Does it ring any bells?

Gizmo is a dedicated guard dog and is the most aggresive one in our canine family when it comes to facing strangers and anybody approaching the front gate. He rushes to the gate when he hears any slightest noise out there and in the evening, he just sits at the gate and watches out until his bed time.

Hopefully we can meet up at the next gathering and see whether your peekaboo is Gizmo's long-lost (?) brother/sister...

glad to know spca is pretty strict with its rules..i remembered once I lost my minpin doggie, i sent them an email and you guys noe what, they really did call my house to ask about my missing doggie...i wasn't home that time and they kindly explained to my mom what to do in order to search for my doggie...

kind ppl they are...and as for pricing, i think paying a little bit more is not really that bad...just regard it as donation to spca...they are doing their job, we must do our part too...spca is practically funded by donation i suppose...

take care guysCool

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hey Chika,

I just wanted to share some of my own SPCA experience with you. Smile

Initially, I had the same problem as you. My adoption for an English Hound puppy was declined as it was only about 6 -7 weeks old ... and there was nobody home to take care of her during the daytime. So, it was logical why they didn't approve my application.

After that, I tried for a Labrador mix. Unfortunately, somebody else has already booked him. Imagine my frustration that day ... I was at PAWS earlier in the morning and I didn't find a dog that I like. And I spent the entire afternoon at SPCA and stilll I couldn't get a dog.

I went home empty-handed with a heavy heart.Frown

2 weeks later (which is last weekend) ... I headed for SPCA again. And this time, I found what I was looking for. A Jack Russell Terrier. He was a mix. But he looks very much like a purebreed JRT, except for his little body. I fell in love with him instantly. He was really timid at first when I brought him home. And the poor little dude was car sick ... he puked on the way home in the car.

A couple of hours later, after a good meal and a nice warm bath, he was all jumpity and active. He's quite a handful! And best of all, he's a really confident little mutt. Full of life. All the signs of a Jack Russell Terrier.

I'm really happy that I've made the decision to bring him home. It was only an hour earlier that his previous owner brought him to SPCA; before I spotted him. He wasn't even tagged yet. He must be heart broken when they (previous owner) left him there ... but nevertheless, I'll shower him with all the TLC he needs. Wink He's my new found friend.

And oh btw, his name is Max.

Re: [lynnzter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi lynnzter,

Thanks for sharing your wonderful story. Every time I go to SPCA or PAWS, it's so hard to fight the temptation to take them all back home and make one giant canine family. (Well, my hubby has less control and every time we go there together, we come back with a doggie.)

Our first adopted dog, Lacy, was pregnant when somebody brought her to SPCA. Unfortunately, the babies never made it to this world alive and Lacy almost lost her life as she suffered TB right after the miscarriage. She made it through thanks to the care by one of the SPCA staff and now she's been with us for over a year as the eldest sister in our canine family.

All these doggies at the shelter have a story to tell and a lot of them are very sad. Still they can give us so much joy, laughter and unconditional love. Maybe because she was a streetdog, Lacy did not roll over and show her tummy for the longest time. When she finally did so and let me rub her tummy, I was so overjoyed to have gained her trust. Yes we changed her life, but she has brought so much more to our life. I'm pretty sure you and your little Max will have a whole lot more fun together than you can imagine. Congratulations and best of luck to both of you.

Re: [hunter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hey Hunter,

Yeah ... he's really an angel.Angelic He caught my eyes instantly as I was walking up the aisle towards the "NEW ARRIVALS". He was still pretty shaken up at that point of time. I think he must be really scared and confused. The poor mutt.

But this little angel is a little devil in disguise. He's really bossy! Tongue He's really choosy about his food. He only wants tasty and aromatic food. He won't eat plain doggy biscuits. I have to mix with canned food / milk.

The people at SPCA told us he's two and a half months old ... But I think he's older ... as he's pretty big already ... but still a puppy ... cos' he's still teething. Probably around 6 months old.

P/S : I wanted to name him "Benjy" ... but I have a friend whose name's "Benjamin" ... he's gonna kill me if I named my doggy "Benjy". Hehehe ... Second option was "Wishbone" ... but JRTs are no wishbones Smile. So, "Max" it is. It's short and macho. Hehehe ...Laugh

Re: [hunter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hey Hunter,

He's definitely a spoilt little mutt. Crazy

He's on strike ... he refuses to eat anything I give to him ... I've tried 4 different brands of puppy food pellets; 2 types of canned food; puppy formulated milk; beggin' strips; doggy treats; doggy barbeque gravy ... I'm running out of ideas.

It seems he was fed with leftover scraps from his previous owner ... that includes rice and CHICKEN BONES [I know because he puked all over in my car when I brought him back from SPCA last weekend. He's car sick. Poor mutt.] Yeah, irresponsible people ... Frown Sad isn't it?

I brought him to the vet and they gave him deworm pills ... and I hope he'll start eating soon. He's so skinny now. I can practically see his hip bones. Pirate

hi,

well, i have to admit, once you've given the dog food other from dog food, it's really hard to get 'em eat back their dog food again (maybe it tastes really nasty)

maybe u can try to mix the dog biscuits with yoghurt (natural flavour)? my dog is really fussy too. the deal is : no yoghurt, no mum-mum :|

little max just need more time to adapt the living style.. not his fault he's fussy... he's brought up that way - a spoilt boy. hahaha.

SmileCongrats to the new mom!

hmm...try feeding him what he was originally fed-minus the bones of course and mix it with kibble.

If he still doesn't wanna eat try feeding him pure rice and chicken then slowly add the kibble.

Eventhough the kibble may by good for the dog, human food still tastes much much much better than kibble/canned food.

Hope this helps.Smile

Last night, I tried mixing an egg into his doggy food ... he finished everything. But when I tried it again this morning, he only took a bite. And that's it. He refuses to eat anymore. *sigh*

Re: [RealityDreamer] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Thanks, RealityDreamer. Blush

The thing is ... I try not to give him rice ... I heard it's bad for their teeth, because rice tends to leave residue on the teeth ... I do brush his teeth though. But I think it's a bit uncomfortable for him as he's still teething. Oh, he loves chicken ... I've given that to him a coupla times and he simply ate every single last piece of it.

Yeah, kibble seems to be the appropriate food for dog ... it keeps the digestive and coat healty. But, little Max just refused to have any doggy food! Pirate

I'm still slowly trying to coax him back to eating doggy food ... Jack Russells can be really stubborn. I read in an article on the web ... it says there they will go without food for a week! I'm worried poor Max will do the same and he'll end up just skin and bones Unimpressed

Hi Chika,

I got peeka from a pet shop in Endah Perade, Sri Petaling. So, can't be related,...... but she also about 1 and a half year old too now....and have the energy of 3 children combined together.....She just never seem to be tired at all except when we went for a stroll in our neighbourhood. Even that only deminish her of 1/3 of its energy. She also bark when she hear people walking pass our house and when we want to go out.

But she quite bright too. We usually let her come into the house, but when we want to go out and trying to trick her to go out....a trick never work more then 3 times!!!!!! so, my sis and I have to think up new trick quite often and mind u... she got long memory so old trick can't be reuse....sigh!!!Crazy

I would love to go to the gathering but I could never seem to quite catch the time....it often overdue by the time i know......do tell me if there anymore coming up and I will try to go this time.

Re: [lynnzter] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Lynn,

Did u leave the food for him to eat with all the time he wants?

Try this, no free feeding for him, always feed him at a particular time, leave the food for him to finish in say 10 mins, after that time's up, regardless of if he has finish eating or not, take the food away, repeat it at the next meal time, he will get the message.

I think he is trying to train u to give him the best deal:) my dog tried this with me, the first time i took his food away, he dun really bother, thinking i'll give him something later, the 2nd time he was a bit hesitant, the 3rd time when he see me feeding him, he quickly finish everything and leave only a clean bowl:)

So u wanna train him or be trained by him?

Just my 2 cents worth...
Maybe we should better discuss this under behaviour..

hi xyne,

beautiful golden you've got...
We also have a golden and our Sam will be 2 years old on 17th of this month.
His current hobby is wrestling with Willy, a Basset Hound and the second dog from SPCA. Sammy is 32kg and Willy is 26kg (he gained 9kg since we got him 7 months ago!), so talk about heavyweight sumo wrestling.

We've got 5 dogs (and 11 rabbits and nearly one thousand fish) ... the more the merrier. So go for it for the 4th canine kid!

Re: [gal] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi,

Good luck!

Re: [Bee-Age] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hey Bee-Age,

Thanks for your suggestions. However ... been there and done that. And it's still not working! Frown

So ... I'm sorting to the last resort, which is rice and pure meat ... with some carrots and peas. I even mixed dog pellets (really tiny ones from Eukanuba) and he can still pick them out one by one! Hence, only rice and pure meat. Mad

Yeah, I read about doggies 'training' their owners. That's why I did challenged my JRT for a week ... but I can't bear to see him becoming thinner day by day ... and I finally gave in. But I still stick to the meal-time routine (which means no rice during non-meal time) and clear off his bowl straight-away when he walks away and refuse to eat the food during meal time. Unfortunately, he's still really stubborn.

That's JRT for you. Definitely not a dog for first-time dog owners. He's the toughest doggy I've ever handled.

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi chika :

I too adopted my first dog from SPCA 2 years ago. Whisky is a terrier mix and is really such an angel.Smile Since then, I have added another 2 more...Jojo is a Shih Tsu with an eye problem (adopted from a friend of a friend who dont have time for a pet until she's almost blind) and the latest (since yesterday) is 2 months old Bear. She has weak hind legs and moves around like a mermaid? Keeping my fingers crossed that her legs will improve with plenty of exercise, calcium tabs and lots of TLT.Cool

I am a regular visitor at SPCA and so far, have helped Daisy (a dalmation), Barney (pug) and Duke (shih tsu X) find a good home. Hope to recommend more friends there. Each time, I'm there I just wish that I could bring one home.

Re: [Gins] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi Gins,

I salute you for what you've been doing to help these doggies out. Please keep up the good work and if there's anything we can help, let us know.

Everytime I go to SPCA, I also wish that I could take them all back home. (and my husband actually has done so in our 2 visits there together... wonder when out next visit will be...Wink)
In fact, we had been looking after one of the doggies who are known at SPCA as "J's dogs."
We had her for 6 months until last month and now she's with our friend, accompanying her own doggie.
Now that we're one doggie less and the fact that we did manage 6 dogs... maybe there is a room for one more again....

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi there.... wow, you are very kind hearted person willing to adopt those beautiful animals who needed home... I did that too when they are about to be put to sleep and from there I will find home for them after all neccessary injections were given... Those were the good times in the US... Here I am just too busy to do anything now:(.. miss those time.... you can view photos I took in the shelter at www.geocities.com/amomentwithfion.... But I am upset to hear that adoption fees are RM150 (mix-breed) and RM800 (pure-bred).. I kow you will hate me saying this but won't be better off if that someone just go to a pet shop and pay that amout of money for a purebreed and best of all for a puppy with a cert? I know cert don't mean a thing, as long as that dog is loyal and so on.... I mean what is adoption, right? This will make people won't want to adopt from SPCA. From the shelter in US I find that one thing good is they will charge you but is just to make sure you will neauter the dog... when you do it, from there the money will be returned to you as the medical fee. I have friend told me to adopt dogs from PAWS, they are much poorer and stuff. Sorry, to say all these but this is just what I feel... So sorry... Sorry.. don't mean to... just need to speak up.... don't be mad ok? Fion

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

visited SPCA again this morning with my darling daugther, Sam. There is something on this 30th Sun for all those dogs which were put to sleep due to sickness and .... All it takes is to buy a candle for 1 ringgit and they will light these candles on the 30th.

There were 2 furry in the cages with a sign that says...Last Chance Dog. No need to explain....no home and no chance to carry on life. It's just soooo sad...their eyes tells it all as though they knew. Oh..and then there is this little Pug ...very healthy looking but down with kidney problem. That's why she is there! And then there is Spotty, a Terrier X, house trained, adorable ...black with white patches. And there's button and oh....so many...

The good thing is I might be successful in getting a lab adopted by my friend. It was just coincidence that he called while i was there. Anyone out there wants to bring another doggy home???? I will if I could....was strictly warned by DH NOT to bring home...3 is enough Smile

Hi :

It was the SPCA in Ampang. The two furries are not dobberman. Just mixed breed, one black and the other black/white. If I remembered correctly, one is a mix spitz.

Oh...my friend took the Bush the Lab. Already paid RM200 deposit. I am so happy Laugh. Since my friend is a first time owner, I am helping him to buy the leash, dog bowls etc. SmileSmile

Re: [vicfion] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi fion,

Please, I'm not upset at all.... Everybody is entitled to what he/she has to say and I do agree that the adoption fees for some of the doggies are almost as high as the prices of pet shop doggies. We paid RM800 for our Basset Hound and were told that these high price doggies are the ones that actually produce some solid revenue for SPCA's operations. We wish we could adopt more doggies and hope that paying these high adoptions fees will be the alternative way of helping SPCA. Then again, I must admit that we are quite fortunate to be able to afford the doggie.
The way I see it is that, because only a small portion of the doggies are adopted while all the doggies have to be looked after equally, SPCA has no choice but to put some high adoption fees for doggies with high potential for adoption (I know it's an awful way of describing them) in order to sustain the overall cost. I also think that the current situation is creating a vicious cycle of "adoption fees are so high - people don't want to adopt - not many dogs are adopted - adoption fees remain high to sustain the cost". Hopefully, when more and more people begin to adopt dogs from these shelters, they may not have to rely solely on these high price dogs and eventually reduce the adoption fees?

By the way, all the doggies at SPCA are neutered before they are ready for adoption and all the initial necessary vaccinations are given free of charge (excluding annual boosters - that's the owners' responsibility.)

I'm not volunteering at SPCA or anything, I just go there from time to time and donate some stuff, but it's just so disheartening to see all these doggies there and I strongly believe that these guys deserve everything that any other house doggies deserve, or if not more. I just hope that my scribbles here would in any way help increase awareness to these guys there waiting for loving home and unconditional love.

Hi Gin,

August 30th is apparently the International Homeless Animal Day to remember the shelter dogs and cats that are put to sleep due to overpopulation and to create awareness of these creatures longing for loving homes as well as the importance of neutering/spaying.
Anybody can join the interntional campaign by buying a vigil candle for RM1 at SPCA in Ampang and there is a candlenight vigil in KL on the same day.
I will put more details on the "Event Calendar".

Re: [chika] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi there... You are right. They need as much money as they can for the animals in their shelter. By the way, if you are interested, do check out my website at www.geocities.com/amomentwithfion. There you can see the condition of the shelter I worked before. Or if you are interested to see the cards I had donated to the shelter do refer at vicfion.wakaf.net under Doggie With A Hat and VicFion Postcards.
I can see people don't adopt because of the price so I do hope they will reduce a little to a more reasonable price.
You know what. I never know how to go to SPCA. I only sent those donation through mail. Maybe in the future when we able to meet, Maybe we can donate some food and stuff together?
Take care.... Fion

I don't think SPCA still have them... I did not send many.... I only got a certain amount left over from the shops I displayed them... I find that it is a waste of time since email and e-cards are so advance... so I asked my friends can I donate all of them to SPCA since all the cards are dogs together wth mine.... used to work in a shelter so hoping I can lend a hand.... I will try to get more from my friends.... no promises.... we are not that close now... will sms her now but don't think I will get any reply... will update you....
I often have my kids at my mom's on Wednesday or Thursday where I am very free.. but I bet you have to work so I guess weekends will suit you... I don't know how we are going to meet up since you don't drive.... But let's fit something up?
You know what... actually, I wanted to print my cards but financially I can't.... the postcards I had? I had made them into normal cards too... just can't find the money to print... if you guys would like to help SPCA, maybe we can print them and sell them during their jumble sale... but just a thought....
Mind emailing me a photo of yours? I guess yu already see how I look like from my website.... vicfion@yahoo.com.. Fion

So whenever you're free and feel like making a visit to SPCA, just drop me a line here. If you drive, you can pick me up somewhere and if not, we can still meet up at a LRT station or somewhere and take it from there on a cab. (Btw, where do you live? We're in Setapak, KL)

Re: [ai_ney] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Hi,

Unfortunately, it wasn't me who you met last Sunday as I was in Penang. I usually visit SPCA during weekdays.
Talking about Penang, we ended up with another doggie last weekend. We bumpted into a poor little thing that was wandering around with a limp in front of my mom-in-law's house. It was raining and he looked like he had nowhere to go, so we took him in. A neighbor told us that the dog was hit by a car and had been roaming for days. Since nobody knew where the dog came from, we decided to take him with us back to KL. We named him "Buddy".
Now our doggie count is back to 6 now. He is still very nervous and a little cautious with our other dogs, but we hope that he will soon realize that he now has 5 friends to play with....

Anyways, hope to see you (for real) soon.

Re: [ai_ney] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

I think buddy is settling in slowly. We took him to our vet and took X-rays & blood test. Thank goodness he has no fractured bones or any serious damage despite having been hit by a car. The only thing is that he is very very fat and was immediately put on a weight-reduction diet. He's about 6 years old, which makes him the oldest member of our canine family. It is no doubt that he was a house dog at least for a while and we're now wondering whether he is used to commands in English since he's a little non-responsive to our voices, but then again we can't speak Chinese SlySly

Since you're a volunteer at SPCA, you know the so-called "J's dogs"? Actually, we were asked to babysit one of the dogs "Julie" last January and she was with us until June. She's now with our friend, who is another dogmania, and we were feeling that we might have a room for Julie's replacement when we met Buddy. (And Julie and Buddy look very similar - only that Buddy is like 3 times bigger than Julie.)Truly, things happen for a reason alright.

Sorry for the long delay.
I wanted to go to SPCA yesterday, but missed the chance. I have to go there this week anyway to pick up tickets and candles for the International Homeless Animal Day candlelight vigil on August 30.
Since you said you are relatively free on Wednesdays and Thursdays, how about this Wed?
My nearest LRT station is Wangsa Maju on Putra line, but why don't we meet, say, Ampang Park station because it may be easier and faster (if it's daytime) to get to SPCA?
Looking forward to your reply.

Re: [ai_ney] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

hi ai-ney,

Yes yes we know her. In fact, our first adopted doggie, Lacy, was looked after by Reve at her house after she suffered miscarriage. (the porr thing was pregnant when someone dropped her there.) Back then, we were in the middle of moving houses and SPCA initially said no to our application to adopt Lacy, but we asked Reve to take a look at our house and convinced her that instead of adopting Lacy in our new house, which would mean a totally new house and new doggie frineds for Lacy, it would be better for Lacy to at least get used to the life with us and the doggies before we all moved to the new house.

She is also the one who asked us to look after Julie, one of Janet's dogs. So I would say that we know her best at SPCA.

Anyways, hope to see you on Saturday at the bistro (though I have no idea how to look for you there....)

I have never meet people who would do such wonderful things for those poor unwanted dogs except the people I met in the animal shelter I worked in the USA... I am excited because at last I found someone who would do something for them... I have some remainder cards to be donated to PAWS waiting in my storeroom though... Maybe I will just send to them by post... I think PAWS is near where I stay but you know as I have kids now, I just don't have the freedom like before to do what I want to do... To tell you the truth, I might not like the screen I will have to see tomorrow in the SPCA... I had gone through while I was working in the shelter before though and I hate it... I was not able to save all the dogs... I hate that feeling... I hate seeing them go one by one... if you have another chance to go through my website again (www.geocities.com/amomentwithfion), you will able to see those few pets I had adopt from the shelter as well as to see the place I worked... keep in touch... take care... Fion

Hi fion,

Once again, my sincere apology and I am truly glad that you have forgiven me.
I still haven't got my hp replaced (this time I have to replace the SIM card too) but things are better on our side and thank you for your concern.

Hopefully, we can meet somehow at SPCA soon.....

I'm back ... Wink With good news Smile. I've managed to change Max's eating habit! He's now on a healthy diet of doggie kibbles and pure meat. And sometimes eggs too. And carrot sticks!

And he has definitely put on some weight. Wink He's one good looking mutt now. Hee hee!

Re: [RealityDreamer] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Was busy with work for the past coupla weeks ... but hard work has finally paid off when we had the largest ICT expo in the region last week @ The Mines. Smile

So, I've got more spare time to be with Max now! Laugh *yay*

How I changed Max's diet? Well ... first of all, PATIENCE is the game. I was being extremely tolerant of him. I whizzed his doggie kibbles with pure meat (I used beef and/or pork. Somehow, Max is intolerant to chicken) and some carrots (all cooked together) ... with a dash of sugar. And he loves it. Then, I gradually decrease the meat and added more kibbles. After 2 weeks, he's gone off from other grubs all together - only kibbles. (Please also take note that I do NOT give him other food besides doggie kibbles, doggie treats, chewies et. al.) And I try to make it a point for him NOT to beg for food whenever he sees me eating at the dining table (now he knows he will NEVER get any from the dining table). I know this may be ruthless when he stares at you with his puppy-dog-loving eyes ... but that's the only way to avoid him jumping on my guests the next time they come over for dinner! Laugh

P.S. I might be going to the AKC RDO @ BU. But not sure yet ... b'cos Max can get really agitated in the presence of other dogs! And I can't seem to find any cure! I've tried bringing him out many times to socialise with other dogs, but he only ends up aggravating them! Once, he even managed to bully a fully-grown adult Lab! Well, I guess that's a JRT for you. That's one of their well-known traits. *sigh* Crazy

aah.. Smile

that's good..Smile add then decrease.

lol know that look too..*sigh* so hard to say know. Lucky, only my dogs do that to me..and they don't jump on the humans having dinner..just stare with their irresistable eyes.. your heart will melt into a puddle. Laugh

hmm...aggravated? in what way? growling? showing teeth? if that's the case, i think you should socialise him more..it will take time. Patience(as u know) is the key. Maybe u can search the forum. He's still kinda young..so it'll be easier now.

Re: [RealityDreamer] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Yeah, aggravated. He gets all frustrated and bothered whenever another dog comes close and try to sniff him. He'll growl and bark at the other dog. And sometimes, he'll even nip the other dog! Crazy And that's the only time he'll show his teeth. At other times, he's a really nice and playful doggie.

And I guess it's all in a package of a JRT. They're known to be aggressive with other dogs. That's their natural instinct. However, I'm still trying to get him to socialise with other doggies. And therefore, I'm going to the AKC RPO Day! Tongue

So, watch out, here comes Max! A big dog in a small body! Haha! Laugh

Well, I think you won't have a prob spotting Max ... cos' he's a JRT with PRICKED EARS. Smile (it's not common to come across JRTs with pricked us cos' they're not championship breed.)

It may be a deformed trait for JRT, but nonetheless, I love his big, piercing ears! Laugh

Re: [doberman] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Thanks for your lovely compliment... So where is your ECS now, mind I ask? Anyway, I don't know just take care of them like one of our family member... they are all in-house dogs so I guess they are clean that we just bath them once 2 weeks... their fur is killing us though... I trieda lot of things but they still drop their fur a lot... The white and crown one was $800 from my friend's pet shop... The brown one was bought from a breeder for $ 800 ... the other one is their son so for free :) have you check out my website yet? You can see my other 6 puppies... I have no choice but to give up to my friends and so on.. I cannot afford 9 dogs (we had a golden retriever at that time)and neighbor already giving us a lot problems... Now all neautered except the father... I don't like to breed them because I will end up crying everytime when it is time for the puppies to go... the last time was an accident... I stay in Selangor.... I have been to Penang though and stayed there for a few years before because of my father's job... keep in touch... take care... Fiona

Re: [doberman] We adopted 2 dogs from SPCA

Oh my gosh... I really hate those who steal peoples' pets.. they don't know how much the pets means to the owners... I may love pets but only thing I am already loose patient with them.. with kids and all at times just tend to loose patient with them... because my kids too would do that to me... I studies in the state for 3 years.. studied Art... what about you.. tell me a little about yourself... I am oldnow... late 20s and all but hehehhe people still ask me am I a student and all.. hehehehe.... wow.. young at heart... anyway, I am not a pet owner and I can never be one... would cry everytime I have to sell a pet hehehhe:) Had experience with my puppies.. and before that I would never thought of being one too... I am a freelancers... graphic designer or typist.. whatever I can get my hands on.. I don't mind to babysit people's pet too.... :) because I don't trust maid or babysitter with my kids so I stop my job.... but I do want a career... but well kids more important... keep in touch...
