Itchy After Touching Dogs

Hope you guys can offer me some tips.

You see, whenever after touching my dogs my body will itch all over. It's like mites biting me. Anyone knows the solution? Thanks!

Re: [Sevenor] Itchy After Touching Dogs

It sounds as though you may be allergic to dogs.

Have you tried taking an over the counter anti-histamine & seeing if that reduces or eliminates your symptoms? If it does, you are probably allergic to dog dander or saliva.

Don't panic - you probably won't have to give up your dogs! There are many good treatments for allergies these days.

Talk to your doctor, explain that you think you might be allergic to your dogs & let him take it from there.

The only other thing this might be is a bad flea infestation in your dogs & they are jumping off the dogs & on to you. Are your dogs on a flea treatment?

Or you could be allergic to their shampoo even, or if your dogs are a bit more grubby than usual, you could be allergic to the oil/dirt. Sometimes I feel itchy if I play with my dog when she hasnt been bathed for a week

Re: [GoldenAddict] Itchy After Touching Dogs

I don't think I'm allergic to dogs as I've had dogs all my life. The itchiness issue only started few years ago when I had a Labrador pup which got infested with lots of ticks from the garden (caught 100+ ticks from his body!).

I had since changed to other breed but the symptom continued. I use Frontline on my dogs and I don't remember seeing any flea on them (but now that you mentioned, I think I'll give them a thorough check later just in case). :-)

Thanks!

I don't think it's the dog shampoo as I do not stick to one particular brand of dog shampoo.

Oil/dirt? Maybe. Guess I've to keep on analysing and find out what's the cause.

Thanks.

I think you are allergic to dogs. Contrary to what most people believe, you can become allergic to something that never bothered you before. Allergies can develop at any time in your life.

Thanks for the info.

OMG! If it's true then look like I have to play less with my JRT. Unsure

Re: [Sevenor] Itchy After Touching Dogs

nah don't worry. not all dogs and not always. sometimes it is caused by fur allergy by short hair dogs. got friends who itches like u do when handling short haired dogs such as JRT but are find with long fur one's. sometimes it's also really caused by dirt.

u know how after rubbing on the grass sometimes u'll itch like crazy? same thing :D
so don't worry. if it really bother's u, just go easy on the hugging part. wash ur hands after interacting with ur dog. just increase ur own hygienic routines and u'll be fine. usually u won't itch on your palm(when i play on the grass my palm never itches just my arms etc where there are sweat glands etc).

try cleaning ur dog more see if that helps too. try using some mild conditioners for ur JRT's short hard fur. see if softening it up a lil helps too.

There are a lot more things to try, so dont' worry :D
