Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

Hi members of puppy.com!

this new topics is up to get suggestions or mabye can help me do some research on the pros and cons and the procedures to get approval from City Council to get a Dog Friendly Park.

now the case here is my bf now is working for YB Hannah Yeoh in Subang Jaya so i heard from him tht the ppl can suggest or request for anything if they hav the surrounding neighborhoods supported the suggestion. my bf told me maybe we need lik 1000 signatures for the petition. but before the petition we need to make sure tht our proposal is not lacking any details tht can make any malay or chinese or indian to "bantah" our idea.

base on my bf info, we need to think bout how to maintain the park, how to dispose the poop, and plenty other minor issues tht can be possible threat for this idea to be "bantah" by MPSJ.

so anyone got time to help do research or any suggestions do drop in here....

thx

Re: [ai_ney] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

Hi, I am new here. But I am very interested to join the plan to propose a DOG friendly park around this area. I have been thinking about it since I have my new Shih Tzu last year end. Perhaps we can propose the below:-

1/ Implementation of Taxation on Dog owner. The concept should be the same as human being. An Adult should bear the responsible of the ownership. For example if the dog is to be a pet for the son, the father/mother (the guardian) should be the owner of the dog and take responsible of the dog. The money generated from this taxation should be use to manage and maintain the DOG PARK. With this taxation implementation, people will have to think twice if they really want to have a dog as taxation involved. If you are to lack of a little passion, this will make them think properly before they really get a dog. Further, this might help in reducing abondone dogs.

2/ Find a suitable location for a dog park. Perhaps the new SOUTH QUAY at Sunway where there is sort of a small lake for small activities? Just a though as a park should be a greeney area but convenient location too. Perhaps Sunway is just too packed? With this dog park, we can get a little small entrance fees like RM 5 or RM 10 for the purpose of mainteance like a normal residential maintenance fees. And of course, it can slowly be a recreation park where we do some picnic or lakeside jogging with dog? This is so ideal. Laugh

3/ Also to think about the DOG INSURANCE POLICY - medical plan. This might be too much but it would be good it there is such thing going on. When ones think dog like a kids or human being, you will know why INSURANCE helped. This is to prevent disease. Dog will be offer for annual check-up under the insurance policy. Also, if there should be anything happen to the dog, the owner would not be burden with cost of surgery or clinical fees? Depending how the policy struture.

What do you all think about on the above proposal? It is practically realistic? I personally think this should be able to start from a small province like MBSJ.

Re: [ai_ney] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

Yes, what khaiheng suggested is good... have a park open to dogs but can charge nominal fee laa... RM5/person or dog. Tax for dog is not a good idea...coz like license, not everybody bothers to get. So who wants to use park had to pay.

Think most of us won't really mind paying so our kiddos can open have fun without anyone giving them and us the evil eye!!

Re: [mum2jude] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

huh, so it's a gated park? need to pay for entry? only people with dogs can enter that park? how to control?

i think the most important factor is how to maintain the cleanliness of the park. no one wanna see a park filled with pee/poo everywhere.

Re: [boco] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

i agree with u...most probably the malays will "bantah" this cos of pee and poo....tht y need help from all of u to think of a solution and suggestions for this park....even though the park charge entry fees tht doesnt mean the maintenance of this park is settle....there are other issues lik how we going to dispose the poo is another major issues as the malays may say it can cause health problem to the neighborhood just lik the same case with the pig farm.....

Re: [boco] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

Gated would be better and safer... our dogs cant run off, can run free within the park. Hopefully, ppl wont think I've paid so someone else can clean up after my dog... it would be great if ppl have the thot to clean up after their dogs so others might continue to enjoy the park.

Re: [mum2jude] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

hahaha definitely it will be gated tht is da whole purpose of dog friendly park wher they(dogs) can run free as a crazy dog....and da owner don hav to worry bout cars and the neighbors

another major concern is how to dispose the poo lik i said earlier even we(owners) pick up the poo and throw it in rubbish bin still da content inda rubbish bin need to hav a different method of disposing it.....tht is what i heard from my bf lar...tht y if any one of u got the knowledge on this environmental friendly thing do feed us more on this....

Re: [mw_pon] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

ya, agree... dogs don't like to be leash, right.. so, when its gated... then those dogs will have lots of fun there... ya, of course don't have to worried about the cars and neighbours...

i think the only method is the owner have to pick up the poo... or we "tanam" the poo... haha... can grow greenie grass some more... haha...

Re: [ALL] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

What i meant was how do you control the people entering the park if there's an entry fee imposed? Maybe if you could operate an automatic gate which requires you to pay before entering.

I think the most ecological way to dispose dog's poo is to flush it down the toilet, where it can be treated in the sewage system.

Re: [all] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

hmm... hope this would help... this is the general rules of the dog park in the western countries...

Dog Park Rules
  1. Dog owners must be in the fenced dog park at all times within view and voice command range of their dogs. Dogs should come when called by their owners.
  2. Dogs must be removed from the dog park at the first sign of aggression. Aggressive dogs are not permitted on the premises.
  3. Dog owners must have possession of a leash at all times.
  4. Keep small children and infants under strict supervision. A large dog running at full speed can cause substantial injury to small children. They just don't realize how fragile kids are.
  5. Leash dogs while entering and exiting the dog park.
  6. Dog feces must be cleaned up by owners. Disposal bags are provided.
  7. Female dogs in heat and sick dogs are prohibited from entering the dog park.
  8. No food of any kind is allowed within the dog park.
  9. Do not run within the dog park.
  10. All dogs must have and display current licenses and tags.
  11. All other general rules of the park are also applicable within the dog park.
  12. All dog owners who fail to comply with the rules can be expelled from the park. Repeat offenders are subject to banning from the park.

Re: [all] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

found this in a website... this is the possibilities that porblem might occur...

How are dog fights avoided?

Dog fights can and do occur. The most successful dog parks are the ones with an active user group. An active users group can reduce the risk of dog fights significantly. They step in and encourage or demand (as the case requires) leashes or removal of aggressive dogs. Most dogs are not aggressive because they are not on their own territory. The dogs that use it most successfully are dogs that were socialized very young and had good experiences as they visited. Depend upon and learn from the dog savvy people to see indications of an impending squabble. Redirecting the dog's attention at exactly the right moment can make all the difference. Your tone of voice and your body language will also make a big difference. Keep calm, don't praise fearful or aggressive behavior by "soothing" the dog with petting and cooing sounds.

What are the typical problems in starting a dog park?

"Locally we are trying to form a group to promote a dog park. What we are finding to be the road block with every authority we approach (vet school, park district) is the problem of feces disposal. They are concerned, rightly, about spreading disease if it isn't picked up and then how to enforce pick up rules. Has your group had to address these concerns? What is your proposed solution?"

In all of the dog parks I have visited the problem of feces disposal goes something like this:

1. Someone provides pickup bags. Usually it is the user group supporting the park. They raise the money through donations or fundraisers.

2. The user group tries to have someone present during the most used times. That someone spends a lot of time putting on a smile and educating. With time and effort and encouragement visitors learn that they all have a stake in seeing that the park is kept clean. Good signs help. Thus, every visitor is encouraged to speak up when someone misses a poop. The approach is to assume either that the person missed the event (very often true) or that they simply don't know better. As odd as it may seem people really may not know how to find the bags, how to use them, and how badly it can screw things up if people don't do it. They may not understand that other people - not paid staff - will have to do it if they don't (or risk losing the park). Community peer pressure. When tactfully done this works for 90-95% of visitors. It is especially effective in the smaller parks where there is no place for the careless and clueless to be completely unobserved.

The user group takes responsibility for picking up after the clueless and the careless. Many of us have the philosophy that we pick up whatever we see because surely we must have missed our own dogs poop time or two ourselves.

The agency providing the land provides trash containers, and pickup. (At least in all the ones I visited).

~>>Dog Owner Group Needed

You will need a committed dog owner group. They will need to spend time and energy educating dog owners and even cleaning up after the ignorant, clueless and careless. In our local dog park the regulars will politely point out to someone that the "missed" their dog's poop. Actually with all the activity half the time it is true. So most of us make it a policy to pick up whatever we see on the theory that we probably missed our own dogs at least once, and besides if we don't we will suffer loss of the privilege.

Most user groups have special event days devoted to sprucing up the park and generating a community spirit among the users.

Re: [all] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

Some recommended elements for a good dog park include:

- A minimum area of 8,000 square feet enclosure, though bigger is preferable

- Posted rules - recommend no kids under 10 in the dog park

- A double gated entry to prevent escapes

- A safely fenced perimeter

- Turf is not ideal surfacing for the entire dog park. Consider decomposed granite, gravel, sand, and tougher native grasses and plants. A good idea is to adjoin 2 or 3 smaller irrigated turf lawns along an edge of the dog park to be used for frisbee etc. that can be closed off by maintenance staff in a crop rotation pattern so they won't become a mud pit from overuse.

- Shade for the humans to stand or sit in

- Benches and tables, Plastic lawn chairs (See Valmont Dog Park in Boulder, CO)

- Waste pickup stations with baggies.

- Trash cans on the outside of the perimeter fence that people can toss the poop bags into over the fence (See Stapleton Dog Park in Denver, CO).

- A swim area with pond or pool. Ideally this area is separately fenced to allow owners to decide if they will let their dog get wet.

- Hills, mounds, or follies that dogs can run up and down and play on to wear themselves out (See Earthdogs doggie daycare in Denver, CO).

- A water spiggot wth bowl, or a flushable water bowl system.

- A loop path in the dog park between 1/4 mile in length up to 2 or 3 miles depending on available space so people can also get walking exercise while their dog frolics.

- Paved or gravel area leading up to and around entry gate.

- Gravel or paved 'warning track' around inside of fence perimeter where dogs will naturally wear away any other surfacing (such as turf).

- Trees, with sturdy 4' fencing to protect them from urine etc. (See Community Dog Park in Louisville, CO by Design Concepts firm).

- Coat and leash rack by gate(s).

- In cold, wet, or snowy climates: shelter for people and evening lighting for winter use. Glass bus shelters with benches inside are popular, (or old decommissioned buses/trollies themselves with their doors locked at night. No vagabond could go unnoticed- or undrooled on- for long in a popular dog park, rules posting 2 hour visit limits can also be posted) to provide a shelter from weather from which owners can still supervise their dogs.

- Tennis ball bucket or place to leave balls (See off leash park in Arvada, CO).

-An "ice hockey players bench' with gate for elderly people to hangout in without fear of getting knocked over by rowdy dogs

-A small/shy dog area for these dogs to play peacefully away from the hullaballo

-A small 6 x 8 fenced timeout out/penalty box for overexcited dogs or dogs who need to be contained for any reason (aggression, bleeding, turns out they are in heat, etc.)

Re: [Veanne] Plan to suggest a Dog Friendly Park in Subang Jaya

Hi Peeps,

I'm Christine and new to puppy.com. I too live in USJ and has taken the task to walk Comet (terrier mix dont know what) on weekends at the USJ 2 hill park at odd hours of course. All just to avoid dagger stares from non doggy lovers. But it is a bit difficult as the weather here is just so hot so normally it's just Saturdays and Sundays from 7pm onwards.

So just let me knwo if there's a petition to sign :)

My bf's place in Bukit Rimau is better as there's a big football field right behind his house and the dogs are let to run about in the mornings when there are no one around. Have seen some other doggies and their owners doing the same thing. :)
