Dog etiquette in Malaysia

Hello, I recently moved here from the US and will be getting my dog out of quarantine this weekend. I am curious what are the 'do's and don'ts' of having and keeping a dog in Malaysia. I am used to being able to take my dog just about anywhere I go, including outdoor restaurants. My dog is well behaved and stays seated under my chair, is non aggressive towards people and other animals.
I understand that Malays can't touch a dog (or a wet dog??) and I would like to be sensitive to this while at the same time being able to socialize my dog in his new Malaysian home. I would like to be able to take my dog out with me to get a morning Kopi-0 or rotia canai w/teh halia. I have lived in NYC and SF which are both about the most dog friendly places in the US - I don't mind pushing the limits of where I can and can't take him as well since people will prob figure I am white and don't know any better :) The nicest place around where I live is a Malay graveyard however I think this would be in bad taste, so I won't be going for any long walks with my dog there.. There is a chinese shop up where I live that has tons of off leash dogs at night, all around. Some have tags, some don't. I am assuming that a place like this is OK. How about the KTM ? Taxis ? (no car here yet) .. OK, thanks in advance for any replies :)

Well I don't think that pets like cats and dogs are allowed at KTM or any public transport.

You still can bring your dog to place like Pasar Malam, some chinese coffee shop where you can get some Kopi-O and toast there. In M'sia public place like Shopping Mall, dogs and cats are allowed to step their paws in. Unlike in Europe country and also States, as I understand ( correct me if i'm wrong) that owner of dogs and cats can bring their pet to anywhere they like including in the public transport and even shopping mall.

Another not preferable place to bring your dog to is some place you called "Mamak Stall". This is because the people that are running the business might be Muslims too.

One thing if you bring your dog out, be careful that your dog doesn't lick or touch any Malay people if they pass by because of their religion thing. But my Malay friend told me that as long as the dog is not wet, they can touch it or not to be lick by the dog. Anyway they still prefer not to touch the dog. But most my Malay friends doesn't care about it.

Lastly, the point is if the place has mainly not Malay people, you can bring your dog there. And bare in mind dogs are NOT allowed in public transport at all.

Hi llamasonic, I am currently in the US. I was looking at places to take dogs for a walk in KL. I just can't imagine how difficult it is to take dogs around KL. Please give me some info on which parks to go and which areas to walk the dog without getting fined, be complained or even arrested?!?!? I am sure you have a good idea about the situation now that you've been there with your dog for a couple of months and could give me a good comparison as you are from the US and know how dog-friendly in most parts it is here. My friend in KL said it's very difficult. To have a pet there, do you need a pet licence?? What other documentions are necessary in case you get called by the animal control person or the cops?? Are there any pet-friendly apartments/condo in KL?? Where (as in residential) can you legally have a dog?? Is it too difficult to give the dog a walk everyday before and after work hours in the nearby neighborhood?? Any information is greatly appreciated!! Looking forward to hearing back from you and Thanks in advance!!

there are some dog frenly apartments and condo here in malaysia...
for eg..
my place here...
theres dogs almost in every blocks..
coz in the morning and evening u get to see owners bring their puppy and dogs out for a walk n stuff.....
so u jus gotta ask around...n preferable not to stay near muslim..
as they doesnt really like dogs...

Heya :) I have not yet tried to take my dog into KL town. It is hard enough walking around here without getting hit by a car myself. I can't imagine walking a dog in town. Malaysia has to be the most pedestrian unfriendly country in the World ! There must be 50 feet of sidewalk in the whole of KL and you had better be careful you don't fall into a drain, have your foot caught on some rusty wire, or fall off of a 3 foot curb that's slicker than a greasy pan when it is wet.

My suggestion is to get away from KL if you want to keep a dog, find a residential area. I am in an apartment, but my landlord does not mind the dog and my neighbors don't complain. I take my dog for walks in the morning to avoid cars and kamikaze's on motorcycles. I'll also take him up to Chinese or Indian shops at night for dinner. This is a dog unfriendly place, but I imagine there are worse places..
I would suggest renting a house just outside KL. This depends on your budget, but you can rent a totally decent place for 700-1000 RM somewhere like Bandar Sri Damansara (just an example, many other places in this range- 15 minutes out of KL. Not the nicest, not the worst place. But staying in downtown KL is out of the question unless you have tons of money to throwdown on a rental in Ampang (7500 per month for a house) or similar places.

You do need a pet liscense, the cops won't bother you about your pet unless a neighbor complains, at that it will still take a few months for them to respond. Cops are too busy taking bribes for traffic offenders to be bothered with your pet :) Not Kidding, police here make more in a day taking cash than they do in a months wages. I have had a bad day in Malaysia today, my post might reflect this mood ;) I like it though - Kind of like Mexico mixed with Chinatown filled with mosques.. if you can imagine that.

Warning, little kids here might try to kick your dog, and their parents will think their kids are being 'so cute lah' as they try to kick your 'dog dog'. Just kick the kids back if they happen to get your dog. Just mentioning this because it keeps happening to me and my dog.. They act as if they are power rangers and your dog is the enemy.. So keep an eye on your dog if kids are around.

Derrickok - I did not say anything intimidating, as far as insulting, if the truth hurts I can't help that. I like Malaysia and it's people. I think the country is in the stone ages when it comes to how animals should be treated. I have seen many dogs abused in public, left in undersized cages in the hottest of weather and tormented by childeren. You can't be here for any amount of time and not see it yourself.

If something I mentioned is untrue, please point it out. The post was made to a fellow American who wanted to know my thoughts after having a dog here a few months. I gave them. Rather than make threats to me, why not try to do little things to make change within your own community ? For instance if you see kids or anyone else kick a dog, wild or not.. please tell them not to and that that is unacceptable behaviour.

If you see somone walking their dog on a string with a branch to whack the dog with, ask them why they won't spend for a leash and collar instead of hitting their dog. If you see a dog that is always in a crate and going bonkers, ring the doorbell and ask the owners why they got a dog in the 1st place ? The next time a policeman asks you for cash tell him to go to hell and pay the normal fine instead or perpetuating this corruption which runs deep and thick in Malaysian society. If the police take kickbacks, it must be OK for everyone to right ?

Kids are not born cruel, they have to learn it.

I will post whatever I want (within the rules of the site) & you have the right to say whatever you want in response.

Whoa! Time out! Chill!

Malaysia is a dog-friendly place. But I do admit that we are not AS dog-friendly as other countries. Many reasons contribute to this (you've already mentioned a few, including this being a Malay country). To my knowledge, dogs aren't allowed in shopping centres or on public transport.

K.L. is not that bad a place. I've lived in about 3 places in K.L (my family moved around a lot Smile

), and in all of those locations, I never had a problem walking my dog around the neighbourhood.

There is no denying that Malaysia is way behind with animal care. ( I am not just referring to dogs only, I am saying animals in all categories ). But here again what is acceptable by others may not be tolerable to you depending on the level of thinking of those responsible for such action.
You haven't been here long enough to justify your remarks. The trouble with your nationality is you thought you are all god almighty. You came, you saw and you wanted an immediate change to suit your mentality.
Furthermore, its your attitude that is causing your downfall. Change it and I'll show you where your dog can go to Mcdonald, KFC and all the shopping Malls.

Well, this is the culture in this country, the place where i live is mostly malay, and they even poison the dogs. But, again....this was 10 yrs back story, when the malay still stay in the kampong. Nowadays , ur dogs only get poison by indonesian, cause they wante to break into ur house. U can expect the culture of malaysia like america. Ur dog in malaysia is definitely safe, except not much places for u to bring him/she to a park only, anyhow u still can bring her along for a walk in ur housing area, if u r staying in a chinese garden area. If u go to china, it is even worst, they steal ur dog and they eat ur dog. so, what do u so???? just adapt to the culture and this type of things need time to change. compare to 30/40 yrs ago. Not much ppl can afford to own a pedigree dog as a pet. but, nowadays the pedigree dog owner is increasing. so, give m'sia some time to change their mind set.

ppl in our contry is not rich enough(majority) , with the impact of economic crisis, who really care about the wellfare of the animal much. This also hav to thanx to ur fellow frens from the states (Soros), if we are all here rich enough, we will think of this thing. like setting out a park for dog & cats, swimming pool for ur pet, hunting ground. So, get what i mean????

U dun need me to tell u all this thing.

If u can ask Hwong( i dunno him at all), to go back to Isle of Elba, then i will ask u to balik Tongsan. Keep ur old style away and dun always think that u r right all the time. ( yes, u r good with ur dog knowledge) but , the way u present urself is too action and dictative.

Uncle derric, i hav use most of my time to search and read through the valueble information from this forum(Those that i required). If not i would not dare to make a statement and give out comments on a consultant like u is sometimes/mostly sound action and rude when replying in the forum. ( i feel it this way).

I think you are doing one helluva job. So I reserve the title for you. I am almost astonished by your reaction. As for English? Read your posts.

Derrick, you are experienced in this hobby and your continued contribution is valued. I am still looking for a suitable dog and this forum can be my source of info. I only wish it is a friendlier place where others; equally experienced may be encouraged to contribute like you without being mauled at the slightest disagreement. My experience at Koicom which I joined 2 years ago has been most pleasant. I wasnt a participant until after 1 year and during that period and as now, I have learned tremendously; to the extend that I can contribute in return; my two cents worth. I have even the courage to apologise in that forum for things that may have innocently hurt others. Its only human to err and learn from our humility.

What you said is true. Well, topics and discussion, some may be given unintentionally hurting others feelings. But then, remembering the Malaysian culture that we are so famous of, why not just brush/explain/etc them off in a friendly way? Yes, some opinion may not be acceptable by others, why not tell them in a friendly way right? No harm done. I'm pretty sure they do not have any bad intention or whatsoever. If they do have a bad impression on us, just prove to them that they are wrong rather than make a big deal out of it. This will shows them that whatever that they thought is not correct, right?
Explain to them in a humble and friendly way, you may get your respect and appologies from them in return.

Derric...here is my reply to all ur points.

A) I m calling u by the name of derric(Derric), that's what it show on the forum. Sorry if i spell ur name wrongly, i didn't know that it will bother u so much. So, the rest of the member please spell his name nicely. If not, u will offended him like me.

B) Did i reintroduce myself fast enough to corrrect my mistake and answer to the request. How about u, do u bother to correct ur attitude???

c) Why keep attacking on my english. If anybody in this forum doesn't undertand what i m trying to tell and imply, i can repost to the forum again if they request. I admit that i m lazy enough to check for spelling of words that i m not sure. Since u can pointed out my wrongly spell words, i believe that u hav no problems understand those words that i hav mispell. Correct??? unless u r looking for troubles or u hav nothing to say of the FACT that i pointed out, except keep on saying that my English is sucks!!!

As long as everyone take a diplomatic approach and be very careful with the wording that you used in your posting, this forum will become a much more friendly place for all. Our aim is to have more forum participants. We have a few regular experience dog lovers in this forum but we definitely welcome more to join this forum. At the koi forum, we have many 2nd generation & 3rd generation members who are once novice in koi keeping now keep on coming back to help newcomers. We hope to achieve the same here :-)

Everyone can have very heated debate on dog issues but please do not attack others.

I shall close this topic and hope all can all a fresh start from now.

I'm VERY new to this forum (just registered) and reading this thread has been kind of an experience. I'm glad the webmaster is clearing the air and I hope as a newbie I won't be under attack if I pose any comments that may infuriate any members here. So, as a precaution I seek everyone's understanding and forgiveness if my words lack wisdom or sensitivity. Cause by no means I would want to offend people (if not, I won't be here).

I think, no one should be afraid of anybody here. What you should afraid is the rules and regulations posted in this website. Sometimes people cannot understand one's cynical / sarcastic / quick-witted remarks and jumped to conclusions. It's just a matter of perceptions, not assumptions.

I have not get a dog yet but am intending to. So I may need a lot of help from folks here to guide me. As a newbie, I hope you can advise me if I post any questions in the forum. Thanks to everyone here in advance :D

No need to be afraid. If you have gone through most of the earlier posts in the forum, you would know that this is not a trend.

Basically, all members are very appropriate with one another. Don't let this stop you from expressing yourself. Sometimes, words are exchanged through e-mails which may cause unjust reaction and no one know what the actual events were.

Spend some time here and you will see that this is correct. Just enjoy and after a while you'll know who is who and what is what. It always end quite pleasantly.

I do not have a dog either (but tons of cats). But after reading about them, you tend to be moved and before long you'll own one. Maybe mine will come from SPCA.

wat a beautiful dog u have! i have a pair of boxers of my own too; a male named Castro and female named Jojo. they gave birth to a litter of three, all females in which one of them, Twinkle looks exactly just like the puppy you have! howver, they are all now sold away coz mum cant stand having so many 'small paws' running around the house!

how are your dogs doin now?

saw the photo of ur beautiful pekingese...do u have any good quality puppies (female) for sale with cert. and microchipped. am looking for 2 healthy females puppies with different colour coat.

am fr penang and i will be able to go to ur place to get the puppies. I like this little lion so much. and i dont mind if i have to wait for the new borne babies.

should u dont breed them, glad if u could let me know any contacts where i can find this little cutie lion from a good breeder.

I've read through your post & I get to know you moved here from US. Well, I'll be going to US very soon and I hope you can give me some advice on how to transfer my doggie there together with me.

Me and my husband will be going to New Jersey soon and we're hoping to bring along our mini pinscher with us. But we're not sure what's the procedure and I'm looking everywhere anyone to give us some useful tips and information.

Hmm....well...I do admit Malaysia is not a very dog-friendly(nor polite, as I believe you can see! Unsure

) country, but you do really have to look at the location. As I would like to state again, Malaysia is not the best country to keep a dog but if you look around you would probaly find that they ARE some better housing areas(though I'm not too sure about apartments) with alot of dog-lovers. Since I live in PJ, I can assure you it isn't too bad a place to keep a dog. If you ever go house hunting here you would probaly find areas(which consists mostly of Chinese and Indians, of course) in which you would be able to see dogs just about everywhere. The rent isn't too bad too... It is quite okay too walk your dog in these areas as the other residents often do too, despite it being against the rules.

As to bringing them to "Mamak Stalls"...well, just be wary of the stall owner, as SOME(not all) can be very uncivillised.
