About Canine Distemper

My puppy, Mocha just past away yesterday, the vet said its canine distemper. But the day before yesterday, my puppy was still doing fine (no diarrhea, didn't vomit, no running nose, no cough)....just had no appetite. When i brought him to the vet that day, he said Mocha has intestine parasite..that's why he wouldn't eat.

We fed him with the medicine prescribed, and then he started to vomit. Only until yesterday evening, Mocha had diarrhea. So we brought him to the vet again yesterday evening because Mocha was getting weak. The vet then told us that Mocha has canine distemper and that he couldn't do much.

I was just wondering, puppies which are infected with canine distemper do not die so soon, do they? Isn't it a few days later? So if my puppy was already infected by canine distemper earlier, shouldn't the doctor be able to recognize it yesterday when i brought him to the vet the first day??

I've only had Mocha for 3 days but i'm really really sad that he has to leave us. But i just don't understand how he didn't show any sympton on the first 2 days, and only in the evening that he seemed very very sick..and the vet says its canine distemper but he didn't see it the day before??

I hope someone can clarify my doubts. Thank you.

Re: [khsin] About Canine Distemper

Hi khsin, Smile

Try to look at this thread cause many members have contributed to the topic:

http://www.puppy.com.my/...gforum.cgi?post=1662

Again, so sorry to hear about Mocha. Frown Hopefully after going through the thread you'll get a better understanding about distemper. But meanwhile, don't forget to disinfect your whole house just in case you bring back another puppy later.

Re: [cshellz] About Canine Distemper

Thanks for the link Cshellz,

Actually the argument in that topic is exactly what i'm curious about. From the 'Distemper' topic, the argument raised was
"since many of the animal clinics bound to have patients with Distemper infection from time to time, how safe is it to bring your young very young puppies there for vaccination ? "

What i'm wondering is how do i know if my puppy, Mocha actually infected the disease from the clinic i went to? Does is seem like a possibility at all??

Re: [khsin] About Canine Distemper

hi khsin,

Yes, there's a possibility that your pup caught the virus in the clinic. Afterall, it's airborne.

That's why, some owners prefer to call the Dr. to the house to perform the jab.

Re: [cdmoo] About Canine Distemper

Thanks cdmoo,

I just needed to know so that i won't make the same mistake again. And thanks again cshellz, but i don't think that i will be getting another puppy or dog anytime soon. Can't bear the lost and don't want to risk any other's lives.

Re: [cdmoo] About Canine Distemper

hi there just one curious question:

will the doc (vet) actually willing to come to the house and perform injections and stuff? must be costly??

i have talked to the vet before about the risk of bringing a puppy to the clinic (my MS died of distemper tooUnsure) fearing of getting all kind disease he said i can bring a thick towel to put on the operating table(you call that?)and lie your puppy on it .i dun know whether how much it can help but surely its better than nothing ?

regards

val

Re: [valerie] About Canine Distemper

Hi Valerie,

Yes, certainly, but I don't know about the charges though. Well, may be a thick towel could help..to prevent the pup from direct contact with the operation table. However, bear in mind that distemper is airborne.. that's the scary part. ... come to think of it.. may be the pup. should wear mask ? Crazy

Re: [cdmoo] About Canine Distemper

Hi CD Moo,

This is a very interestin topic that I wish to know more about. Do you happen to know if a pup is infected, how long before will we see the signs or a pup could actually be infected and possible for it to show no signs at all?

Re: [cdmoo] About Canine Distemper

Hi moo, Smile

Yeah, agree with Jaz. Interesting topic!

I'm also wondering, say if we bring our dogs to a place where there's a dog with distemper or somewhere near a dog with distemper (mr Khoo said 1 km radius also can kena right?) and if our dogs are vaccinated and healthy and have strong immune system, can they be immune to the distemper virus? Or does it mean if they get in contact with the virus, they will get it no matter what?

And unfortunately I dun think the towel with the table works. Again, applying the logic of catching the virus within 1km!!!

Correct ah? Shocked

Re: [jaz] About Canine Distemper

hi Jaz,

I was told it's less than a week...

However, we have read so many cases that owners bring back the puppy and only discover days (typically less than 7 days) later that the pup got infected with virus... The question is why the puppy does not show sign at all while in the petshop? Or could it be, the buyer was simply overwhelmed with the look of the puppy and forget about the health condition of the puppy? Do the potential buyers know how to distinguish (/test) a sick / healthy puppy ?

Or could it be, the puppies are selling like hot cake and before they show any syndromes , the new owners already bring them back home?

I remember I've raise this question before.. but I could not get a satisfactory answer.

Re: [cdmoo] About Canine Distemper

Hi CD Moo,

Just to confirm, our dog gets a yearly jab from the vet, right? and am I right to say that the yearly jab is mainly to prevent this Canine Distemper? All I know is Jaz needs to go to the vet yearly to get it, but what is it for, I am not too sure.

Re: [sweeeng] About Canine Distemper

Hi Jaz, SweeEng, CshellZ,

1. Nonimmunized adult dogs are at risks of getting the virus too. but the fatality rate is lower than puppies (of less than 6 months old).

2. yes. the yearly vaccination helps to prevent distemper. To what extend.. I dunno. Crazy

3. Should an immunized dog got the virus, it's immune system will fight against the virus..and overtime, it'll immune to the virus.

Re: [cdmoo] About Canine Distemper

Hi CD Moo,

So this virus is only prone among puppies...

All dogs should get thier yearly jab on time (saying that Jaz's jab is 2 months overdue Blush)

If an adult dog is immune with the virus, how can they fight it? Are there other suggestion to prevent this killer disease besides just getting thier jabs on time?

Re: [jaz] About Canine Distemper

Lisa,

bring jaz to the vet and don bring him into the clinic, u can always request the vet to come out and have the injection in the car. I normally do it that way. the one that u and i use to go one do have this service without extra $$$, look for the white fella not the black one.

Re: [boon] About Canine Distemper

oh okay.... I spoke to Eve about it last night and she told me that Jaz is unlikely to get this disease as she has already had a first three jab when she was a puppy.... but I think she's just trying to avoid paying for the yearly jab that's why she says it's fine... Mad

By the way, never no that there's a black fella... I thought all white! ahhaha
