My Shih Tzu has skin problems

My 2+ years old Shih Tzu has skin problems, red patches under his arms and legs with flaky skins.. the vet said it was due to his diet and I have stopped giving him meaty stuff.. and now he only eats Science Diet's for Sensitive skin dry food..
Any help from you all on this? i have tried almost everything but the situation has not gotten any better... now he's starting to bite himself and make wounds.. i really worried for him

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

maybe he's allergic to certain protein or drugs...the biggest suspects would be chicken, corn and antibiotics, cuz Sunnie used to have same problem and it was due to the above. I Had to experiment on the right diet for her.
With warm regards,
CY Phang

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi ....

My mom's shih tzu has this problem too. We thought maybe it's b'cos he's feeling hot. But not sure, la ... but about the flaky (dandruff) skin ... the doctor ask to use selenium shampoo. But better mix with some baby lotion into the shampoo ... according to the vet....

We've changed his food to lamb & rice dry food also .. and cut his hair short (real short). I think he's better now...

Swee Eng

Re: [joycet78] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi Joyce, C Y Phang & Swee Eng,
No his condition has not improved, the vet gave some vitamins and i have cut his hair real short in case it was due to the hot weather.
i've even air-conditioned the bedroom for him but no improvements.
i can see he's really agitated by the rashes and itchiness. Really dunno what else to do...

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi Shirley,

Jovi also developed rashes when fed chicken, vet gave cream to apply and oral medication.

Did your vet gave you any other medication besides vits? you may want to seek other vet's opinion ...

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi Shirley ...

Forgot to tell you something at my last reply. Ok ... this one I just tell you, la .... but whether you wanna try or not, I'm not sure. Well ... it's like this... A couple of months ago, my own shih tzu was scratching ... maybe something bite her or maybe she had some rashes ... i'm not too sure.

Then I bought Savlon antiseptic cream (for humans) from the pharmacy & apply it on her... She felt very much relieve and stop scratching. NExt day ... ok ... immediately. Maybe you can try but don't buy Dettol antiseptic cream. But SAVLON...

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi Shirley, Smile

My puppy had skin rashes and a lot of flaky dandruff at the beginning too. I changed his kibble brand, changed his shampoo and fed him with coat supplement (Nutricoat) and now cod liver oil. I also add honey to his food every now and then.

Bathe him once a week, after that blow dry to make sure he's totally dry and proceed to brush off the flaky stuff off his body.

Took me more than a month, but his skin is noticeably better lately. No flakes! Cool

P/s - Swee Eng, just curious yah...wouldn't the dog try to lick the savlon off? Crazy Or would they get turned off by the smell? I was afraid of that that's why I didn't use these antiseptic creams. Instead, I applied Honey onto the spots where it looks extremely itchy. Honey has antibacterial properties and it's ok if he licks at it Wink

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi, Shirleyh.

My shih tzu also having this problem now. My vet tould me it was because of the hot wheather, there r no medicine to help them, just use a wet tower to dry wash their body every day n put some powder on it, that's all. And try to make ur dog drink more water!

P/S: oops, another thing is don give ur dog sleep beside the water, i mean don give their body get wet, a little bit also cannot.

Hi cshellz,

You tried honey? this sounds good... my Jovibaby loves honey. Any recommended dosages or can I

cream his food with honey? Not overdoing it, huh?

Re: [shirleyh] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Hi Shirley

My ST x Bichon mix also have the same skin problem like yours... even worse, I think, coz my Dewey keep scratching and biting his back and back side and scratching his tummy with his hind legs. I also notice flakes on his head and ears... besides that also got red patches behind the legs... he will scratch until bleeding/hair fall off.....i brought it to the vet and the vet say the red patches is due to fungus infection and the flakes, Dewey probably got the skin problem from his mum when he is still feeding on her milk... the vet gave me some lotion to apply on the wounds and some antiitch medicine(eated twice a day) to stop him from scratching. the best way is "botak" the dog, not only cut the fur short coz the lotion will still not kena the skin fully.i also bathe Dewey with selenium shampoo(Seledruff) every 3 days.I will scrub and soak him for abt 15 minutes before rinsing him. After 2 weeks of this treatment, the skin heal already... now no problem...

i am also giving him nutricoat... so now after a month, the fur grow back already and it is so shiny... although still short and he stop shedding fur already.

Hope this helps you.

Brought her to the vet but no result.... not ticks & not skin problem.... nothing wrong with her wor Crazy. I've tried applying powder on her & shaving her coat but still scratching Pirate

I don't think it's caused by the kibbles as she has been eating this brand for many many months already. Can any kind soulAngelic out there provide some remedies to cure my poor baby??!! Wink

Re: [cshellz] My Shih Tzu has skin problems

Nope ... my dog won't lick up the Savlon ... maybe b'cos it makes her feel more relief..

do not put honey cos they'll like it and keep licking that spot and it will be worst than before...

Many dogs are getting skin rashes b'cos the whether is very hot... Unless you put your dogs in air cond room than everything will be fine. ha.h.a. Wink

Infact my dogs are getting the rashes now cos they are alwiz in the kitchen and its very hot. No choice but to bath them 2 or 3 times a week...
