Drinking pee but not mulnutrition...HELP!!

helo, i have a ms which is paper trained. he used to avoid his pee/poo when he is small and never step on them. when he grew up (currently 8 month old), his pee is getting more and it will wetted his leg while hie is peeing..few weeks ago, i saw him licking his pee while he is peeing when the pee flow to his front leg!!! after few observation, i found that he is doing that to keep the urine away from his leg..im very sure he is not drinking the pee bcoz of mulnutrition. he will leave the pee without stepping on it immediately(sometimes he will rai his back leg or jump side ways to avoid the pee) after he do his biz. sometimes after peeing, the pee that stain his leg will dirty the floor as well. im staying in an apartment, my dog used to do his biz in the balcony.

im very very headache~~ dunno wat to do~ i ask some breeder online but they didnt provide me any solution~ i dun wan my dog to have a stinky mouth!!Mad some more, i cannot stay with him 24hours a day to wipe his face after peeing~ now, he has matted fur at the mouth part~~(due to he likes to play with cactus, drink my aqua water, drink pee. looks so ugly now, will send to groomer tis week) he cannot sit still fr me to clean/ comb for him and always want to play~~Unsure

any idea? im thinking of getting him a pad. which can put on the floor like a mat and able to absorbs the urine~ but this seems a bit costly in the long run~Pirate

I can relate to your frustration.

My silky is paper trained as well. Like yours, she will also avoid and sidestep her pee. But for the past few months, she seems to deliberately step on her pee and walk into the house and stain all over the floor.

I say deliberate because if i'm around her while she pees, she will avoid stepping on it. If not, it's mopping time again for me. Imagine the bottles of floor cleaner i've been using of late.

FrownToday i went to pet clinic to get my boy Frown and at the same time was chatting with my vet regarding my boy behavour.. licking his genital part n sometimes licking his pee... the vet said that this maybe cause by his intake... some treat may cause his pee to smell like the food... that's y the they drink their pee.. according to my vet drinking pee is not harmful, just that it dirty the face area...

try not giving him any treat for a week and then see how lorr.. normally it's the treat which causes the smell problem.. not the dog kibble food.. dun worry too much... another way proposed by my vet, monitor him... coz my boy only will lick his pee when we r not around n when he is bored.. dunno about ur furkid attitude...

Re: [carinmanfong] Drinking pee but not mulnutrition...HELP!!

Try those training pads... once dog pee on it the gel absorb it so not wet.... works something like pampers... It can b a bit pricey but its worth it... get the smaller piece ones... about $1.30 - $1.50 per pice. Buy the locally made ones...much cheaper. I used a piece for 2 - 3 days, roughly about 5x pee.
Its more of dominant trait in male / female dogs licking their pee. Tats why yr vet suggest neut...
When u clean up do not make a big fuss... if its attention yr dog is seeking... he is definitely thinking this is how he gets attention. Distract him from wat he is doin... ex play a game of fetch.
My fren add some apple cider vinegar to the drinking water... check it out n mayb u want to try it.

Re: [carinmanfong] Drinking pee but not mulnutrition...HELP!!

generally apple cider vinegar is good for dog... a teaspoon in a bowl of water... hopefully, the pee will b acidic n he does not like it... err.... so far it works for my dog.

Sometimes... Cookie will lick her pee too.. Ash wont...In additional to the Apple CV drink, I have used the training pads n also I have put the plastic mats below the training pads...

Re: [jessicaohh] Drinking pee but not mulnutrition...HELP!!

Both my dogs lick their genitals too after they poo and pee. I think its normal cuz thats they way they 'clean' it after all they can't wipe it themselves with kleenex Smile
