Hip Deplesia Started from 3months young below ?
Hi all,

My new GR puppy 3months young love to jump and always stand up on her hind leg, isit risky for her to get a hips deplesia?

According to my Breeder, hips deplesia if after 3months it's not on a dog, it's unlikely to happen, is there a fact to support this statement ?

Need your help, thanks

if in percentage term, the pup will most probably to get Hip Deplesia if the parents have it. so, it is the breeder's responsibility to check wether the parents have it a not. try to ask abt that, if both the parents dont have it, chances are the pup not getting it, but not 100%. this way is more secure rather than say after how many months. if u 1 to be sure, bring ur dog for check up. Smile

ic ic actually i did a check up at the Vet b4 getting my dog back, for health, medical n hips deplexia. Doctor give Green Light to buy.

According to my Breeder the parents have no Hips Problem la, is Hips problem stated in the Doggy Cert or Health Card ?

Dogs might be born with it and it is less likely to develop CHD when parents are clear. However, sometimes the submissive gene might popup and your puppy has it, even when the parents are certified clear.

No vet can SEE that – just x-ray will show. Normally, one would do that when the dog is over one year of age. If you are worried about it then you might consider some restriction during his growing age to minimize the risk in making things worst.That means that things can get worst during the dog’s life, hence; the breeder’s statement is not correct.

Vet cant see the CHD from a puppy ard few mth old... Even u have the X-Ray.Normal CHD will appear around 6-9 mth. Some serious case, u even can see the dog cant walk properly, or u relize ur dog show painful when it walk or run... But they will still continue jump up and down, because their most love owner is infront of them...Dog is lovely bcos this...

If u suspect ur dog got CHD, u can take X-Ray around 8-9mth, see the advice from vet. NEVER TRUSTH MKC Doggy Cert. Alot of cert is fake in the market. CHD can come from puppy parent, but if u take good care to the puppy, some cases show it still possible to avoid it.

What u can do:
1. Monitor the weigh of ur puppy. Control the weigh is very important to prevent the CHD. CHD often happen in overweight dog, bcos the joint suffer fr the heavey upper boby, long term it will hurt the joint, and cause CHD. Dun listen to people, fat very cute...Unsure

2.Dun let ur puppy stay in slippy floor. If u really cant avoid this, pls minimum ur puppy space, make ur puppy cant run or jump in the small space. That can reduce the suffer of joint as well. PLS BRING UR DOG TO RAW SURFACE TO WALK (DUN RUN and JUMP)EVERYDAY. That help their bone n joint develop.

3. DON'T LET UR PUPPY JUMP AND RUN TOO OFTEN. Puppy need sport, but u have to limit it sport, over active will hurt joint as well, especially jumping up and down. Keep walking is enough, swiming even better!

4. Take glucosamine to prevent the joint problem. Pls take the advice fr vet.

5. (Special for dog in BARF) Raw meat feeding is good, when u know the nutrition need for a puppy or dog. BUT only meat is not enough for a puppy, especialy calcium. The puppy whose mostly eat meat, after 8 mth, u will see their rear leg cant pull straightly. Cant walk properly. Rear leg look like not energy. Thats diff fr CHD, but still consider is bone problem. Dog kibble provide holistic and balance nutrition to a dog, no matter which life stage. Raw meat provided might contain presevertive, chicken grow injection (dunno wht that call)..etc. SO people who interest to give ur love in BARF, pls read more infor before u do that...

If u thk too trouble to feed glucosamine pill, mayb can consider Active Care Dog food. The only dog food provide enough glucosamine in dog kibble. The glucosamine in Active Care is 2000mg/kg, normal dog food "joint system", mostly only contain 500mg/kg...so is a optional way for glucosamine supply....english no good, wish help...Smile

although u claimed that ur engllish is not good, but ur thread seems very informative for me.
Especially for BARF formula. I heard much benefits of BARF formula, but things have both side. May I know more abt disadvantages of BARF formula? Which is better? Kibbles or BARF formula?

don't let your pup, jump up & down from car, sofa or chair, and not to let him climb up & down the stairs, do not over exercise him, puppy need alot of sleep, as some as the babies, do not let ur pup walk or run mile and mile, especially on hard ground.

HD problems always occur on large breed dog, especially GSD...........12 to 16 months after, pup's bone are fully grow......then you can enjoy your jogging or cycling with belove pup..................or start agility train...........

Hip Dysplasia is an inherited trait and is controlled by the genetic make-up (genotype) of the individual dog. The genotype is determined by the genes received from the parents - one half from the sire and one half from the dam. The current concept is that hip dysplasia is a polygenic trait meaning that many genes affect that trait.

The hip joint is the part of the skeletal system that joins the structures of the rear limb with the pelvis. It is the focal point for transfer of driving power, generated by the rear limbs, to the remainder of the body.

The hip is a ball and socket joint. Normal function depends on a good fit of the ball (head of the femur) within the socket (acetabulem) The surfaces of the head of the femur and acetabulem are covered with smooth articular cartilage. The joint is encased by a specialized type of connective tissue called the joint capsule and this produces a joint fluid which lubricates and nourishes the articular cartilage.

Normal development of the hip, from birth to maturity, is determined by how well the parts fit together.

However, one thing is clear.
Scientists have repeatedly demonstrated that hip dysplasia is only controllable by selective breeding and thus the need to x-ray is indisputable.

Hip Dysplasia is neither a new disease nor one exclusive to the German Shepherd Dog as it can and does affect all breeds.


The discovery in dogs was made by an American Veterinary called Schnelle in 1935 but it attracted little attention for the next 21 years until the American Aninvale Kennels made public the fact that their dogs were affected.


In 1960 the Alsatian League of UK, realising the importance of x-raying breeding stock set up an official scheme. This was followed in 1965 with the BVA/KC Scheme which put Britain ahead of all but Sweden in taking official action.


The American OFA scheme followed in 1966 and the German 'a' scheme in 1967.

1-9 are the areas of the hip joint used to asses degree of dysplasia. Each hip is scored separately to give a total of 0 (lowest) to 53 (highest) thus the lowest combined total is 0 and the highest combined total is 106. The breed average today stands at a total of 19 for both hips.


Dogs cannot be x-rayed under the BVA/KC Scheme until they are 1 year old.
