Bathing beagle

Hie all.. I'm just wondering how do u bathe your beagle? I am bathing my beagle, Snowy with warm water but she seems to hate bathing so much that she will try everything to escape. The same goes to nail-clipping and ear-cleaning.

I've also read a couple of books and articles that adult Beagle only requires bathing a few times a year. Is that true? That seems ridiculous and I guess i will pengsan everytime I go near Snowy if she is going to have a few bath a year.

Re: [carmine] Bathing beagle

I think bathing a beagle a few times a year may be more applicable to "mat salleh" weather. For me, I bath Bodhi around once every 2 weeks, so that her natural oil is preserved. Beagles have very sensitive skin and they need their own body oil to protect their skin. If you think Snowy is starting to smell a bit, just rub her body with a wet towel. If you keep Snowy indoors all the time, then I think you can even bath her once a month. For example, Bodhi is on heat at the moment and I didn't bring her out at all for the last 2.5 weeks. The last time I bathed her was about 3 weeks ago. Eventhough she's on heat, she's still relatively clean and doesn't smell bad at all. You just have to clean their ears every week because the bad smell actually comes from the ears.

As for grooming (nail clipping, ear cleaning, bathing etc), you must first get her to associate it with good things - that means food or toys. For me, I give her a small treat everytime I clip a nail. So, Bodhi knows that the sound of her nail being clipped will mean she gets a treat. I copied this method from the clicker training method. After a while, I clip all the nails in one paw and then only, give a treat....slowly, I only need to give one treat, after all her nails are clipped. Same goes for cleaning ears. Since Bodhi is so fidgety, that's the only way which worked well for me. Most importantly, don't force them to stay still. Wait for them to settle down, then only continue. Beagles will be beagles.

Good Luck Smile

Re: [snoopydog] Bathing beagle

hi snoopy dog, kind of some while me didn't come to this puppy.com already, how are you lately? Laugh

for my case, because my dog every morning also go for morning walk in the park, it get worse when after rain because coco will get more excited and roll and roll in the grass, and all muddy muddy. kind of imposible to batch her 2 weeks once.

Really make much different now for the smell(remember last time i mention about the smelly part?) it seems like coco getting older the cleaner she is. now dun smell that bad anymore, and her ears getting cleaner compare to last time. Strange huh?? Crazy

Re: [cowcow] Bathing beagle

Hi cowcow,

Bodhi & I are fine, thanks. I guess the older they get, the better they are at cleaning themselves. Either that, maybe you are so used to coco's smell already and don't think it's smelly anymore Wink??? Haha!Laugh

Re: [snoopydog] Bathing beagle

Do lots of beagle joined gatherings ? cause I seldom see more than 3 beagles from photos taken at gathering. I hope that I can bring Snowy to gathering too but I scared she will end up refuse to go back home together with me. Hahaha!

Re: [carmine] Bathing beagle

Hi Carmine,

Yes please do bring Snowy to some of the gatherings once she has all her vaccination jabs. It's good to socialise beagles often. If not, they can get bored easily and could start to bark/ chew unnecessarily. Just follow some of the "EVENTS" thread and you'll see when & where the gatherings are held. Hope to see you and Snowy soon Smile.

Re: [snoopydog] Bathing beagle

I cant wait to meet other beagles too.. but I seldom socialize with all the puppy.com members.. apart from fearing that Snowy cannot behave, I'm afraid that I will be left behind too Blush actually, what do you all usually do during gathering? snowy is afriad of water, and she hates sunshine ! hahaha

Re: [carmine] Bathing beagle

Hi carmine,

Don't worry. When you let Snowy mix around other dogs, you'll be surprised how well behaved she can be. It's just like kids. At home, they are naughty, but once they are surrounded by strangers (dogs & ppl) in a strange environment, they are calmer.

You don't have to let Snowy swim if you don't want to. Just keep her on leash. And if the sun's too hot, there's a shade there. Cool

Hi Carmine,

The next gathering will be at Kota Kemuning on 14th of May 2003 starting from 9am. Do come and join us, I am bringing both Archie and snuffy along. Do hope to see more beagles too :)

Don't worry about the left alone part, you will get to meet many forum members and all of them are very friendly. And snowy will get to meet other doggy friends too.

Re: [kbs] Bathing beagle

I've seen your dogs, kbs. They look so adorable and well-behaved. I'd be loved to join you guys but I am going back to my hometown for this long week end. I shall meet you guys during the next gathering.
